It wasn't the first time Twyla had had to tag along with her father's side of the family for daytrips, in fact it had become more of a trend now in the lead up to her beginning her studies at Hogwarts. Her mother was busy with work, which was something Twyla had been both dreading and fantasizing about letting go. Her father, too, who she would've thought would be delighted to enjoy the company of his sister and family, but he had made the same excuse that her mother had made, so the girl had been forced to conduct her own final checks for one of the biggest events of her life... alone.
She had accompanied the Flores family on their trip to Diagon Alley, and, like usual, followed Ayla wherever she went, which happened to be the Magical Menagerie.
"What are you thinking of getting?" Twyla asked as she walked up to the shop, trying as subtly as she could to get a general idea of what Ayla was going to purchase, and how much better it would be than whatever she found.
"Oh, I don't know. I'm sure I'll know what's right for me once I'm there." Her cousin had replied, but Twyla walked sternly past her to push the door open.
"Oh, do you now." She muttered, unable to contain her spite. She only let it linger for a split second, before turning her head around, curls flying, and beckoning Ayla to follow her, smile wide.
Twyla had never truly taken a good look around the shop, so she took the time to come to her senses as her cousin talked to the shop owner, an old man that she seemed familiar with. She gave a small, polite wave in his direction when she heard her name, but continued to search the shop, her eyes scanning over everything.
"Is there something I can assist you with?" Came a voice from behind her, and she turned to face the shop owner, who's name Ayla had mentioned as Witticker (almost too similar, she thought).
"Yes, but I'm not entirely sure with what. There's so much choice." As she says this, Twyla is whipped back in time to the first time her mother had taken her out into the muggle world, taking her to London and showing her the very same muggle shopping centre she had first visited with Twyla's now aunt all those years ago on her gap year. She remembers wandering through those bright white halls, gleaming muggle signs, seemingly glowing without magic, products of an extreme variety. With so much choice, she hadn't known where to start.
This had won a laugh from Mr Witticker, who walked out from behind the counter and looked down at her.
"Well, we have a large variety of cats, which have always been a fan favourite, and you seem like the cat person-type, and it seems like your cousin has taken a like to-"
"No!" Twyla cut him off, spinning her head around to watch Ayla play with a ragdoll kitten. Her eyes didn't even stay long on the sight, instead looking back around to the shop owner, and then to the rest of the shop.
"Not the cat type then? Hm. Perhaps you'll like our owl collection then. They're very practical, and regal. Why not take a look at our selection?" The shop owner said, directing her towards the cages of magestic birds.
Once again, her mind is whisked back to that day. A young Twyla had held her mother's hand and ran into the first open shop she laid eyes on, pulling her mother along with her into a comic book store. She had gazed with her eyes full of wonder at all of the shelves and stacks of comics, books and annuals, quickly running off from her mother to finger along the stacks of annuals for some random muggle '"science-fiction" television programme. She couldn't remember the name, but could remember various casting calls from it, and right now all she could remember is this one bound book, an annual as it said on the cover, dusty and almost thirty years older than Twyla herself, decorated with characters, but one caught her eye in the bottom right. A young woman with curly brown hair and a dark wine velvet dress. She enamoured Twyla from that very moment.
A shrill hoot wakes Twyla out of her memory, and she turns to lock eyes with a stocky brown owl, with gorgeous feathers and wide, bright eyes staring back at her, full of warmth, yet icy cold, and she falls in love with the bird right then and there. The syrup feathers of the owl remind her of the curls of her idol from that stupid muggle store, tight ringlets forming in her mind. Twyla smiles as she instantly decides the name of her new best friend.
