KIM MIN-HO ✰ FIRST YEAR ✰ GRYFFINDOR
HISTORY
──────────── ✰ ─ ✰ ─ ✰ ────────────
EARLY LIFEOn the bleak, foggy morning of October 30th, 2011, one day before Halloween, the quiet cries of a newborn boy fell on his teary-eyed mother's ears after fourteen hours of toil. His dark, damp hair was flat against his soft head as he cried, his tiny eyes squeezed shut as he shook his little fists. This was Kim at the loudest he had ever been. For the rest of his quaint toddler life, he was as silent as a mouse.
Kim had a wonderful childhood. His parents cared for him deeply, even if they hid important matters from him. His father homeschooled him all on his own, teaching him about their town, their city, their country and the world beyond. Ju taught him about his name, and how in Korea your family name was written first. Kim began to slowly get used to this strange way of writing, and began referring to himself as his surname rather his given name, Min-Ho. His parents, although finding it strange, did not question this odd request and have called their son Kim since the age of two. As Kim grew, he began to love the outdoors, but preferred quiet activities outside, ones he could preform alone. The park that was only a few blocks away from his apartment was home to his favorite tree, an ancient weeping willow that he loved to climb and was the perfect place to sit and read.
This park was the same place where he met his two best friends; Connor and Beatrice. The two were neighbors and had known each other since they were toddlers, and found Kim under his tree as usual one sunny afternoon, tucked away in the shadows. After a great deal of shouting and getting his attention, Kim gave in and joined the rambunctious pair in a friendly game of tag, which he always won. For children that were loud and seemed fast, they were slow to realize just how much faster Kim was. They were inseparable ever since that day.
Up until that moment in time, Kim's life had been quite peaceful, and he liked it that way. Then one day, he noticed his mother's stomach growing extraordinarily in size, and on a bright early morning, he was suddenly left at his friends' Connor's house for a "surprise playdate" while, unbeknownst to him, his mother was rushed to the hospital by his father. You can imagine Kim's surprise when he was picked up from Connor's the next day after a "unplanned sleepover" and saw a baby in his mother's arms. He was a brother now.
After that, life was never quiet in their apartment. Mary, Kim's new little sister, was always laughing and clapping and singing her annoying little toddler songs, and Kim wasn't sure what to do about it. Yes he found it irritating at first, but over time he grew used to her loud ways and even felt lonely when Mary wasn't at home. He loved his sister dearly, and just before his tenth birthday, it became clear to the rest of his family how much he truly did.
Mary tended to break off into a run often. She would appear behind a corner and come barreling towards you, tackling you in a crushing hug and refusing to let go until you hugged her back. Sometime around her birthday in May, she ran into the kitchen, where Kim had been working preparing tea for his father peacefully, and went straight for Kim's arm.
It just so happened that Kim had been pouring the hot tea at that exact moment, and he shouted for Mary to stop and slow down when he spotted her bright blue eyes peeking around the corner before pouncing on him. His sister ran into him, and the kettle was knocked out of his hand. In a desperate attempt to save Mary from burns, he flung his hand out and the kettle (which was about to topple onto Mary's small head) turned and flung its contents onto Kim instead.
Mary cried and cried while Kim's parents tended to his wounds. Kim on the other hand, distracted himself from the pain by consoling his sister and scolding her at the same time. How many times have I told you not to run around near the stove? After that day, Mary swore she would never even speed-walk in their kitchen.
Unlike most children who had no idea of their magical lineage, Kim had always suspected there was something going on with him. A tingly sensation, an itch that he had to scratch, and whenever he dared to scratch it, strange things happened. So when he was told by his parents that he was a wizard and his own mother was a witch, he wasn't surprised.
Instead, he was quite frustrated. For eleven years, they had hid this from him? For what reason? It was his mother's idea, he learned from his parents, to wait until his first instance of magic they called it. He was terribly angry with his mother, and to this day he feels he still holds a grudge.
The worst part about this he hadn't even realized until later; he would have to leave his friends behind. His parents had (falsely promised) he would be attending a middle school, his first school ever with his two best friends, Beatrice and Connor, and now he would have to leave them behind to go to a school where you waved wands and said magic words. He hated the idea.
He also hated the idea of having to tell his friends this. Of course, he couldn't reveal he was a wizard, so he had to come up with something. It's a private school in Scotland, he tried to explain as the two shook their heads, not believing him. Still, he tried his best as the more antisocial in the friend group and gave them each a parting gift: a silver ring engraved with all three of their initials.
