At summer camp, Illowy imagined she'd be wise to take advantage of different events or whatever was going on this time of the evening, and enjoy time with her peers. Maybe make some new friends or at least enjoy the time left with the future Seventh Years that wouldn't be with them for camo next year. But tonight, she just needed some time on her own to clear her head a bit.

The snake slipped away from the immediate view of the camp grounds as the sun eased away it's last rays of light to give way to the starts and sliver of moon. A perfect night to stretch one's legs, she thought, running a hand through her hair.

Utilizing her animagus was a personal thing to Illowy. Though thus far it was her crowning achievement of ability considering the difficulty of the spell, it wasn't something she exactly advertized. It had been a year and she was fairly certain she hadn't told a soul. She used it around the school occasionally, slipping through the shadows when she needed the extra cover of black fur; but also a part of her really enjoyed the relief of just being something else where the only expectation was that she didn't pee on the rug or something equally as simple. It felt like freedom and a level of strength she didn't have when she was in human form.

The young witch rolled her shoulders, bending her neck this way and that, trying to loosen herself up as she looked around to ensure that no one else was watching, and smiled to herself. Now for the part she liked best.

A deep and centering breath before taking off at top speed, only taking a few quick strides before she felt herself melt away into four paws beating the earth beneath her and the world shifting as she picked up speed. It was like becoming one with nature as she picked up each new smell and sound that she otherwise wouldn't have noticed before as long, lithe legs carried her.

She wouldn't be gone long. A quick sprint around the lake to clear her head and lungs before she'd slow her pace as she came back along the treeline outside of the camp. The Irish Wolfhound threw herself to the ground in the safety of the shadows, taking a moment to regain her breath and cool herself down as she took in the cool, damp mountain air. Illowy never considered herself a particularly outdoorsy person aside from enjoyed sitting outside, but in this form, she had to admit she appreciated it a bit more as she stretched herself in the cool grass, believing there would be no worry about being noticed. After all, typically most people were too preoccupied at this time of the evening to venture very far from the light of camp.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

  • Wand
A pale-skinned and black-haired boy raised his wand forward. Dim light emanated from the tip of the his wand. The silver-framed glasses reflected the light from the wand. His facial expression showed panic and confused.

"Where did I leave it?" said the boy with a trembling voice. Anyone who saw him would know that he wanted to cry. However, the boy's logic prevailed. He knew that he wouldn't be able to find the object he was looking for with tears clouding his vision.

The darkness of the night sky did not aid the boy in his search. Accompanied by the summer night wind and the sound of the lake waves, the boy persisted in searching for the item he had lost earlier that day. He deeply regretted carelessly losing the object. "I shouldn't have brought my diary when playing with Zephyr earlier," he whispered.

Several minutes had passed, but the diary he lost has yet to be found. The pale-skinned boy was now sitting near a tree due to exhaustion. "Nox," he whispered as the light at the end of the boy's wand went out. Now he was only illuminated by the moonlight and stars. Then he gazed at the night sky while his thoughts wandered as he tried to remember where he lost his diary.

The fleeting black shadow caught the child's attention. With curiosity, he asked, "What is that?" He tightly gripped his magic wand and chanted, "Lumos." The light shone from the tip of the wand once more. He wiped the water from his eyes to see more clearly. "Is that... a dog?"

It was Monday, July 10th, 2023.

It was a beautiful summer's night and the moon could just barely be seen up in the night's sky.

Yes, it was a little past curfew, as it was past 9PM, but Tone was out and about for a particular reason. He'd discovered a diary on the ground, most likely it had been accidentally dropped by someone. Who would just throw their diary away like that on purpose? If they'd wanted to throw it away, they would have burned it or disposed of it in a less conspicuous area. Therefore, it must have been lost by someone. Of course Tone needed to return it! He'd looked inside the first page to see if a name was written there and there was. Zach...

That was the name of the owner of the diary, or at least he assumed so. Unless the owner had written someone else's name in there for some reason. Tone hadn't read any of the diary, he'd just opened it to see if he could find the owner's name and he'd been successful with this. Now, all that remained was to track down this Zach somewhere. The pink haired teen had only just discovered the diary a few hours ago. He hadn't had time to look for them until now. But the owner probably was searching for it, if they'd discovered it missing...

It couldn't wait until morning!

Tone let his dark eyes flicker over his surroundings, searching for people out and about at this time.

It was around this time that he spotted someone who looked as if he was searching for something. The figure eventually sank back against a tree to rest from his searching and Tone headed over to him. However, as soon as he was about to greet him and ask if he was Zach and if he'd lost a diary, the boy cast Lumos and stared at a certain area in the darkness. Was something there? Tone glanced in the direction Zach was looking and frowned a little. The teen couldn't see well with the light coming from the wand pointing there....

Slowly a shape started to form and Tone nodded after a few seconds. "Mm. It looks like a dog?" The pink haired teen said, close to Zach. He'd already forgotten his main purpose.

The peace and ease of the summer night were short-lived for Illowy when she caught the sound of sniffling and dead leaves crunching beneath someone's feet. Maybe it would be nothing, she would stay very still where she was, her ears being the only thing that twitched until the noises stopped... she was pretty sure whatever it had been was gone now and she'd relax once more.

And yet, again, her relaxation would be interrupted when a shining Lumos caught her eye a short distance from herself, and a boy staring at her in confusion.

The hound blinked bright amber eyes at him; certainly a far more comforting color than the chilling blue of her human eyes. Though in a similarly chilling away, the canine gaze glinted strangely as the Lumos reflected off them. What in the world was she supposed to do now? Her first instinct was to scare him off. But her second and more reasonable thought was that upon observation, it was just a kid. Maybe one of the First or Second Years... and he looked like he'd been crying. Goddamnit, no she can't intentionally frighten a kid in the woods.

Then a second one appeared... Merlin's beared why couldn't people stay in the camp like they were supposed to? Maybe a hypocritical thought given what she'd been up to, but she was about to be a Sixth Year for Godric's sake. She was perfectly equipt to handle herself safely away from adults. She basically was an adult.

Two boys. She could handle two boys. Granted, it wouldn't be right to intentionally scare them off... yeah, that might draw a bit more trouble than she was willing to get herself into tonight. Accidentally though, if the lads were skittish, and as a result ran away, that was a different story. The dog huffed before pushing itself up into standing, ever still staring down the boys. It wasn't called an Irish Wolfhound for nothing. A massive breed, on par with other large breeds like Great Danes, that easily could stand eye to eye with an older child. She was covered in midnight-coloured, coarse fur dappled here and there in lighter grey and white specks; and beneath that fur was the pure muscle that came with being a predator, designed to take down large prey. Whether such a sight would be frightening was up to them as she approached slowly and quietly, hoping they were the sort who would let their imaginations get the better of them and tear off running back for the safety of their respective cabins so she might enjoy the remainder of the evening in peace.

"Aaah!!" Zach was surprised by the voice of another person. He flinched and immediately looked at the person who was near him. In the grasp of the minimum light, he saw a boy with a pink hair stood nearby, closed to him. By the height of the boy, Zach assumed that he probably was older than him.

"Ohuh... Yeah... It is indeed a dog," he said. He couldn't remember there was a dog in the school. Dogs also were not the pet that students could bring to the school. So whose dog it was? Zach saw the bright amber eyes of the dog glinted by the reflection of his Lumos. "Is the dog friendly?" But he dismissed the thought when he remembered the words of his mother who is a veterinarian that he must be very careful and cautious if he encountered wild animals.

Zach slowly took two steps backwards when he saw the dog clearly. It was indeed a very big dog with dark hair. Greyish specks could be seen with the help of a glimp of light from the pale boy's wand. The dog gave a stare at him then slowly approached him and the older boy. Zach was panicked. He tried to recall what his mom saying when he faced such situation. His hand was trembling, made the light from the tip of the wand went off. What he could remember now was something from his DADA class."W-What should we do? Should we cast Verdimillious and... and informed the adults?" Zach said to the pink haired boy. He knew some spells for dueling, but in his current state, the chance of the spells failing would be increased.

It seemed he'd scared him.

"Ah, sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." Tone apologized to the boy before him.

As the figure, which appeared to be a very large dog in the darkness, got to its feet, Tone let his dark eyes linger on it for a few seconds. Yes, it was a dog, he could easily tell this. As his eyes adjusted to the sudden darkness (courtesy of Zach's light spell going dark), the pink haired teen regarded the figure before them. It wasn't an average dog, it was much taller and thicker than most would have been. A different breed? It had to be either a Great Dane or an Irish Wolfhound, if he remembered his facts correctly. Tone loved animals....

All types. Although, he did have a soft spot for cats in particular. No offense to all the other animal breeds out there. As it got to its feet, its height became apparent, it almost seemed to reach about 3 feet, which was impressive for a canine. Tone himself currently stood at 5'5", as he'd grown an inch during summer, without realizing it at the time. He was nearly fourteen, he'd be that age come September, yet despite this he felt like an old man sometimes. What was ironic was it went both ways, depending upon his mood and the situation.

Sometimes he felt old. Sometimes he felt young.

But tonight he didn't really feel anything about age at all, he was only focused on getting the diary back.

The diary that he was hoping could belong to this boy he'd found searching for something in the darkness. Tone wasn't really scared at all when faced with a larger-than-normal dog, even in the darkness. He loved animals and trusted they didn't try and hurt others without a reason. Before he could react to the dog's movements, the boy by his side began to stammer at him. He was obviously scared and Tone took a step in front of him. "Don't worry, it's probably harmless." The pink haired teen told him and shook his head.

"If it's just a normal dog, we can handle it together. There's no need to cause a fuss if it's just something simple, right? Plus, we're not supposed to be out of our cabins right now." Tone reminded the boy with him. He could vaguely make out the outline of the large dog slowly advancing on them. "Hey there! You with someone out there?" The thirteen year old said with a calm voice, trying to keep the animal in his sights. How would it react to his words? Its actions would determine his next move.

Hopefully, it wasn't violent by nature.

When the younger boy shouted, the dog instantly paused, lowering itself slightly as her ears pinned back. Why all the shouting? Honestly, was a little discretion too much to ask for? None of the three of them should have been away from the grounds so late, so the least he could do was keep his voice down. Then again, it seemed he was contemplating calling for the adults to come. Another stupid idea, honestly was he trying to get the whole lot of them into detention on the first day of school?

The pink haired boy seemed decidedly older as he seemed to take a more protective approach, stepping slightly more in front of the more timid lad. This boy at least had a bit of sense in him, reminding the other about how they were technically breaking rules right now and it would be a bad idea to call for the adults. Regardless of his sense, she wanted them both to leave as she started her slow encroachment again until the pink haired boy spoke at her.
"Hey there! You with someone out there?"
What a silly question, of course not. Dogs weren't allowed as familiars at Hogwarts. Even if she did have an owner who snuck her in, it wouldn't exactly have been an easy feat to smuggle in an animal of her size and not be noticed. Then again, she supposed it wasn't unreasonable to think she might've belonged to someone in Hogsmeade and wandered far enough.

She paused again as she looked the lad up and down, amber eyes flickers between the two students in the darkness. She had to make her choices wisely. Naturally she could have just shifted back and been done with it, but at the risk of endless questions and conversation, she'd rather not. Not to mention the risk of getting snitched on for being off the grounds. Dog form for now it was, she decided.

The animal curled into herself a little, ears still pinned before bearing sharp white teeth. Surely a good enough display of canine body language to communicate "leave me the hell alone". Anyone with a grain of common sense would take that as a universal plea from any animal to just let it alone.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

Zach nodded at all the words coming from the older boy. And he just realized after the older boy said that they were outside of the cabin. It meant that making any ruckus, especially calling adult here would be a very bad idea. He hadn't got any detention yet and he definitely didn't want to get any of them. Thank the pink-haired boy for his actions, he finally could be a little bit calm. Zach stood behind the older boy while keeping his eyes on a large black dog in front of him.

Zach became more scared when he saw the dog show sharp white teeth. "I'm scared," said Zach while weakly grabbing the older boy's clothes unconsciously. If there's enough light, the boy would be seen become more pale. However, the light from the tip of Zach's wand went off slowly as he became more scared. And it made Zach start to panic until he stiffened. First, his diary was lost. It contained all the important notes he must read each night. Second, he faced a scary large dog that showed sharp teeth. He didn't know what to do or why would the dog become like that. Third, the only light from his wand slowly went off. Losing more focus would make it completely off. Tears started to flow from his fox-like eyes. Poor boy. He just wanted to find his diary and go back to the cabin in peace.

Tone knew students didn't tend to have dogs as familiars.

They were too much work to take care of and with a busy school schedule, it was too much to handle.

Probably, this was the reason why they weren't allowed as options in the first place. Cats took care of themselves for the most part, owls were easy to take care of and could even be left in the owlery for short periods of time if emergencies came up. Rats and other small animals and reptiles were relatively easy to take care of too. Dogs were the only ones that didn't fall into this category, as taking care of them was almost similar to taking care of human babies. But despite this, Hogsmeade wasn't too far away from the place here.

It wasn't unreasonable to think one of the residents might have a dog that had gotten out and gone exploring on its own. There was a very slight chance it could also be a wild go but Irish Wolfhounds weren't a breed that typically were seen out in the wilds. And of course, the last option. The dog could very well be an Animagus, which was just as likely as it being a Hogsmeade resident's pet. If Tone had to take a guess, he'd go for the former or latter, because he really didn't think it was the middle option. It just didn't make sense...

To him at least.

If it tried to attack him or Zach, Tone would think it was someone's pet who had gotten loose.

But if it didn't, there was a high chance either it was a very well behaved pet or it was an Animagus. As the dog's ears pinned back and it showed its sharp white teeth, Tone regarded it for a moment. It didn't move. But it was obvious it didn't want them moving forward either. He still couldn't tell which one it was. Glancing back at Zach when he clutched onto his shirt from behind, the pink haired teen regarded him for a few seconds. Zach was scared, that was what he'd said and Tone felt like he needed to take care of him now...

He glanced back over at the dog and then returned his attention to Zach again. "You want to go back to the cabins?" Tone asked him and started to slowly move away from the dog, keeping one eye on the animal just to be sure. He wanted to spend some more time with it but at the same time, Zach was pretty scared and he didn't want to scare him further. Tone was sure he'd be able to find the animal again sometime, especially if it lived here. But he didn't know how often he'd be able to meet and make friends with this particular boy.

The younger lad looked near fit to wet himself as he latched onto the pinked haired boy. Even better, the older boy looked as though he understood what the animal was trying to convey: do not approach, go away. He didn't seem to move a muscle closer to her as he turned his attention somewhat back towards the younger boy, asking if he was wanting to turn back.

Yes, please turn back. Go away.

His attention wasn't completely off her though, nor was her's off him. Between the pair, he seemed far more likely to push the boundary then the timid thing hiding behind him. The hound eased back a bit, her ears still flat, shoulders hunched and tail hanging low. At the very least she wasn't bearing her teeth as aggressively as she took a couple steps back to try to widen the space once more. Amber eyes flickered between them.

It simmered in the font of her mind that, should the older lad decide to test his own bravery, she was going to be put between a rock and a hard place. Realistically, she couldn't attack them, and she didn't want to bark or use anything that might draw attention... her options were painfully limited to fleeing, and Illowy wasn't someone who was keen to the idea of fleeing. For now, she could only hope that push didn't come to shove and the boys would wander back to where they'd come from and this whole encounter could just fade away into a passing memory.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.
