Arthur smiled back at the girl, just happy he wasn't immediately rebuffed and told she was waiting for someone. "Twos the limit, I think," he agreed, putting a hand on the side to steady it before he got inside. He stepped into the boat and settled down in the open seat in the back, moving his head to get another look at the castle in the distance, lit up brilliantly against the darkened sky. "Pretty cool, huh?" he said when he realized he wasn't making much conversation, pointing to the looming castle. He still couldn't believe that was going to be their school!
"Arthur. A very chivalrous name. I guess it wouldn't hurt to say that I'm Ellara, but you can call me Ell if you want to."
Arthur tilted his head at the description of his name. She was probably referring to the mythical King Arthur. He was actually named after Arthur Compton, but maybe the physicist was notably chivalrous as well. "Ell it is. Nice to meet you," he said, though that was a pretty odd way of putting it, saying 'it wouldn't hurt' to say her own name. Maybe it was a magic-born thing, he thought, shrugging it off. He'd gotten used to meeting odd people.
"Do you have any family at Hogwarts?" he asked.

Ellara looked out at the dazzling sight of the castle illuminated against the stark blackness of the lake's murky surface, wondering for a moment what could possibly be lurking within. Probably more than the poor soon-to-be First Year wanted to find out, for the current moment in time. She'd have to do more research on that later, once she got the chance.
Upon Arthur's comment, she nodded, murmuring a sort of, "Mhm," in response. She should probably pay more attention to what he had to say, but her mind was in a thousand different places at the moment. She was about to go to Hogwarts! A school for witches and wizards... Who knew what kind of crazy place she'd end up in? The kids on the train ride talked about different houses, but she honestly had no idea where she'd end up. Was she smart? Her marks weren't all that bad. Was she brave? Ellara didn't mind speaking her mind when she needed to. Was she cunning? She was usually pretty creative in different situations. Most of her muggle friends thought she was pretty nice too.
Arthur's response to her greeting seemed a bit clipped, and a quick glance in his direction confirmed he was thinking about something, though what, she had no idea. Ah, there's the question. He asked if she had any family at Hogwarts... obviously fishing for the "politically correct" way of asking if she were a Muggle-born, but Ellara decided she didn't really mind.
"Nope," she replied, the corner of her lips curled up into a bit of a nervous smile. "All of my family members are muggles, so I'm sort of going at this blindly... but I'm excited! Do you have any family here?"

Arthur shook his head as she returned his question. "No. It's just me and my mum at home," he said. He didn't have all that much family to begin with, and certainly none at Hogwarts. "Ah, she's a- um, s-she's a nurse," he said, about to acknowledge that she was always a muggle, but somehow he couldn't bring himself to put it that way. Like she was some kind of different species from him. He knew that muggle was supposed to be the 'politically correct' term. But still the way wizards tended to say it was kind of.. condescending. Like 'oh those silly muggles, they don't understand anything'. At some point he wanted to talk to other muggleborns and ask what they thought about it (maybe he was just being over sensitive) but he'd wait until he knew them a little better first.
Instead he grinned and asked Ellara "Do you have any brothers or sisters?" Growing up as the only child of a single parent, other people's families always fascinated him. Even if they weren't, but especially if they were big, he was super curious about what they were like. Reading a lot, or even just from watching TV, he could tell that his home life was pretty unusual. Though he'd never tell his mum, sometimes he liked to imagine a normal family home with a mum and a dad and family dinners and church on Sundays.

Ellara leaned over the edge of the boat, reaching out her hand until it hovered above the smooth surface of the lake, almost as if she were tempted to touch it and see what would happen. Could the water be enchanted, as well? That was probably a better question to ask at a later time... El shivered into her robes, reminded once again of the cool temperatures introduced during the nighttime adventure, and she thought over what Arthur had to say about his family. His mum was a nurse... Did that mean he was Muggle-Born, too? Just the thought of that seemed a bit reassuring to her, knowing that she wasn't going at this completely alone.
She smiled as he asked if she had any siblings, a question she'd faced many times growing up. Kids with tons of brothers and sisters always seemed in awe of the way she'd lived alone, apparently unable to imagine the life of solitude, or what not, but she'd never minded much.
"Being a nurse is pretty cool!" she commented in response to the mentioning of his mother. "My mum worked as a secretary at a hospital, so I guess that's sort of similar... As for siblings, I'm an only child. Things used to be busier when I was younger, but my mum died last year, and since then..." She gave a minute shrug, evidently wishing to change the subject.
Her eyes wandered the scenery, falling anywhere but Arthur's face. She wasn't in the mood for any sympathies, at the moment, and there'd been a question she'd been wondering about for a few minutes, anyway. "How do you think these boats move?"

She gave an inward sigh of relief as she clambered into the boat."Thanks."Ok, this was a start. Now, all she had to do was not clam up which was her natural first tendency and be at ease for this short ride across the lake to the castle. It couldn't be that bad. The girl was nice enough and her name was sort of pretty too, Elena had to admit."Anatasia, I like it. A-A pleasure to meet you."She produced a smile or the equivalent of one at least. She had stuttered, were her nerves that bad already on the first day? It was just a simple boat ride with another person, what about this simple concept was causing her so much stress. Perhaps it was the case she had never really been exposed to social interaction much, well, she would have to learn to get over that soon.
Her tone was sort of a bit...adamant, Elena thought.I really hope she isn't one of those prideful, king of the world types. She really did not tend to get along well with those types of people."So,first day. Any House in mind?"She asked, might as well get to know the girl and for once, she had carved together a sentence without stammering, perhaps she was getting better at this. Houses were a big part of the school and her aspiration for Gryffindor or maybe even Ravenclaw held strong in her mind. She glanced at the girl silently assessing her. She didn't strike her as the Hufflepuff type, perhaps a Gryffindor? She laughed inwardly at the thought of Slytherin. Her parents hailed from that house and that had been nothing but trouble."I'm hoping for Gryffindor."She commented thinking about the ceremony ahead."But who knows what the Sorting Hat holds for us."She said slightly chuckling before stopping. Well this was new, she had actually managed to hold a decent converstation and got a laugh out of it. Perhaps things were not so bad after all.

Anastasia frowned at the girl's stuttering. Excellent, she'd start her journey with a stuttering mess. Still, patience was supposedly a virtue, so it wouldn't hurt to be a little patient for the moment. She smiled a little when she received the compliment on her name. It was a compliment, even if it wasn't exactly something Anastasia had any influence over. She wasn't about to be nasty to someone she had to put up with for the next ten minutes or so with.
"Oh, Slytherin, obviously, it's the only acceptable house," Anastasia snorted. It was hardly even a question. Slytherin was by far the best house. The only other potentially acceptable house was Ravenclaw, but that was really a rather weak second. Hufflepuff was disgraceful, as it meant you had no measurable talent, but worst of all was Gryffindor. Gryffindor that was cultish and incredibly violent. That was what her parents had always said anyway. Anastasia had learned a long, long, long time ago that Mother and Father were always right. Always. It didn't matter if they were technically wrong. They were always right.
Anastasia pressed her lips together when the other girl said she wanted Gryffindor. Of bloody course she did. Anastasia was seriously considering tipping the boat over just so she wouldn't have to continue this conversation. That wouldn't do though. She could hardly show up for her sorting dripping wet.
"I suppose if the house that's known to have exactly zero impulse control is your type of thing, then more power to you," Anastasia said pleasantly, her voice not matching her words in the slightest. She supposed she could have been a tad more diplomatic about it, but she frankly didn't care to. If this girl was really planning on being a Gryffindor of all things, then she wasn't worth any more of Anastasia's time.

The house with zero impulse control?!She looked at Anatasia momentarily lost for words as she tried to contain herself. Clearly, she had severely underestimated where this converstation would be going. So, she wanted Slytherin, she restrained herself from snapping back a retort. After all, she wasn't one to go around starting fights. Elena wondered if the boat ride would even be peaceful at all. At worst, both of them would wind up in the lake having had enough of each other but she dismissed that thought. She gave the girl a slight smile knowing her next words would probably tick her off but then again, but she was tired of all the negative energy that was pouring out from this person, it was time to fix that."That's a bit harsh, don't you think? After all, we're placed in our respective houses based on our characters so if you're saying e-everyone in Gryffindor is a bit loony....well, all houses have t-their ups and downs, no?"Damn it, there was that stuttering again. Why couldn't she hold a converstation like a proper human being. The other girl was probably sick of it."Sorry."She added quickly focusing on the other boats."I-I don't want to sound too abrasive or anything."
Inside, though, she felt a urge to wipe that pleasant expression off the girl's face. It was like a wolf in disguise. They said one thing but meant something totally different. She directed her attention back at the female thinking up possible names to call the girl. Her first interaction with someone and it could possibly turn into them being foes for life, how lovely.Good freaking job, Elena. She told herself sighing inwardly."So, any classes you're looking forward to?"She suddenly asked keen to change the subject. Surely, that was a safe topic without going at each others throats. Clearly, to this girl, Houses was a touchy subject and she was quite adamant about which one she wanted to be Sorted into. Elena tried to imagine her reaction if she didn't get her desired house and smiled at the thought.

Anastasia scowled at the girl's reply. Smashing. Not only was her boating buddy a stuttering mess, but she was also a wannabe lion. Without even bothering to converse any farther, Anastasia knew that this was not the kind of person she would spend time and effort befriending. It just wouldn't make sense. The stuttering thing could be overlooked if they share the same values, but since this girl didn't even mention Slytherin as a consideration, they clearly weren't going to get on very well. Not everyone could be a Slytherin, but they should at least want to be one. Slytherin had something of a reputation for being the "evil" house, but Anastasia thought that that was just a bunch of nonsense. So what if Slytherin had a higher than average number of morally questionable witches and wizards? It really wasn't that many more than the other houses did, just more recent.
"It's really not all that harsh if I'm just stating the facts," Anastasia laughed. Everyone knew that Gryffindors were impulsive and wild, the same way everyone knew the brightest wizards and witches usually came from Ravenclaw. Perhaps there was a bit of bias on her side, considering her house preferences, but that didn't mean she was wrong. Truth be told, Anastasia was rarely wrong, which other children found rather irritating at times.
"Obviously, everyone in Gryffindor is a bit loony, the house's biggest trait is bravery, which, in a bunch of school children, translates to zero impulse control and a bit of a hero complex," Anastasia said as though it was common sense and something anyone would believe. She had never even considered anything different. Alright, maybe she had daydreamed about it when she was younger, but her parents had fiercely scolded her, so she tried her very best to look at things the way her parents did.
She resisted the urge to roll her eyes when the other girl apologized. Being abrasive wasn't necessarily a bad thing if one was confident in their convictions and stuck with it. In essence, not what this girl had just done. Anastasia pressed her lips together before smiling tightly and mentally resolved to just make it through this boat ride. After that, she probably would almost never have to speak to this wannabe Gryffindor ever again.
Anastasia was fine with the sudden change of subject since she did not, in fact, want to spend the entire boat ride bickering about something utterly pointless. She was also always glad to get to show off her knowledge and pretty much inform Elena that she was going to be the very best at all of their classes and Elena needn't even try to outdo her. "Oh, I'm quite looking forward to all of them. I'd have to say I'm most excited for either Charms, Potions, or Transfiguration. History of Magic looks interesting as well, at least the textbook did when I read it, but then again, a ghost was able to teach it for years, so it can't be too riveting. What about you? Anything in particular that you're looking forward to?" Anastasia said conversationally, as though reading your entire textbook mulitple times before school even began was perfectly normal behavior. Like many of the rather strange things Anastasia said and did, it was normal in her family.

A first year entrance. Oh how long Abby had waited to here those words. Not long but still. Her fingers were shaking. When the same girl that was on the train ride said "Everyone says that the entrance is the most magical thing ever but my Pa says it just a bunch of wishy washy."
Abby being a muggle-born and all didn't reply. This was the moment she was waiting for. " Finally I am with the people I belong with."
Even though Abby was filled with excitement she was filled with worry. Thinking about her father. How will she live without seeing him for months at a time. Since her mum was gone she though her father would be quite lonely.
The boats awaited. She stepped on not caring that a boat was rowing itself. She was gazing at hogwarts. I will be living here. Never never in her life would she had thought she would be learning magic in a castle.
Walking up those first steps were like the first man on the moon. She was on a different planet.
"I want to be in slytherin,"
"I want to be in ravenclaw."
"gryffindor is the one for me."
It seemed that nobody really wanted hufflepuff. That was the house that seemed the most pleasing. It seemed to fit my personality and my hobbies. We walked into the great hall.
She stood anxiously waiting for her name to be called to be sorted.

Okay, she was starting to get negative energy off this person and she didn't like. Sure, she was doing her best to brush it off but the girl had a way of getting her point across and not in the most kindest manner as well. Every fiber of her body urged her to lean over and give the first-year a good wallop or two but wiser heads prevailed. After all, they had not even been sorted yet, who knew, people could change with time but right now, she was wondering how much longer this boat was going to stay afloat. Hopefully, until they reached the castle. Speaking of which, she glanced out over the lake towards the school which glimmered in the distance with all the lights and whatnot, they were close but quite not there. She would have to endure this converstation for another 5 minutes or so, she presumed. My luck just has to be this rotten, does it. A potential Slytherin and Gryffindor in a boat together, what could possibly go wrong? She thought to herself sarcastically.
Of course, much to her relief, the topic of discussion shifted to academics and studies away from the volatile subject of Sorting. Of course, this did nothing to ease the tension in her opinion. She still maintained her attitude and Elena was finding it quite rough to keep this converstation going. She kept silent for a while simply nodding as Anatasia rambled on about the classes and textbooks and what not offering a shrug in response when asked about her expectations."Well, most probabaly Defense Against The Dark Arts. I tend to lean towards the hands-on and practical stuff more than pouring over every word in a dusty, old textbook."She said in a light tone attempting to insert some humour into the boat ride. Was this girl going to condone her choice of classes as well then? She was half-expecting it, why was her luck so rotten?"After all, its one of the necessary classes needed for an Auror, I'd like to go into the field after my time here."She added smiling for what seemed like the first time she had stepped on the boat. Well, the stuttering had stopped, imagine that. Perhaps she was getting too much into this converstation? Time would tell.
