Closed Summer Camp Build-A-Bug-Hotel

IC Date | July 20, 2023
The first year Sabine spent at Hogwarts had been nothing short of a dream come true. Her involvement in school-wide events had been a huge part of the professor experience, and, thus, when learning about the Hogwarts-hosted summer camp, Sabine couldn't help but offer her experience. When she was approached by the hardworking and lovely summer camp planning committee, she was all too happy to extend a helping hand.

Thus, she had set up a tent to provide temporary respite from the harsh sun that beat down on the assembled campers. The tent was large and purple, with little signs pointing to the entrance, drawn open with golden twisted rope. If students were to enter the tent, they would find the inside impossibly bigger than the exterior. There was an unexplainable air of enchanting mystique around it, with vines and leaves hanging from the ceiling. Lanterns lit the inside of the tent, and fireflies flitted in jars. Long wooden benches and tables were adorned with crafting materials of all sorts: including empty cans, wooden crates, sticks, seeds, plants, small logs, moss, and other up-cycled and natural materials.

Most curiously, perhaps, were the three large pieces of parchment detailing three specific creatures.

"Hello, lovely students! Welcome, welcome. Some of our magical little friends need a little bit of help staying safe on Hogwarts campus. Each of these creatures play an important role in the ecosystem, and it's our job to help them feel welcome and protected. Before you are materials to be used to make your own hotel for any of the three creatures. If you pay close attention, you'll see these little guys hovering around our space today," Sabine grinned and gestured broadly around the tent. If students looked closely, they could see little green Bowtruckles climbing vines and peeking at students curiously; Fairies flitting from flower to flower with tinkling little voices; and Golden Snidgets quickly zipping around the top of the tent, invisible to the untrained eye. "I expect you all to treat our little friends with respect and care, or you'll regret it. Remember, we share this beautiful planet with so many beautiful creatures, ones that we must cherish and care for."

It was Thursday, July 20th, 2023.

As of now, it was a little past halfway through their time that would be spent at Hogwarts' summer camp.

Tone didn't want it to end because he had nowhere to go for the rest of the summer, until he returned to Mahoutokoro. If he couldn't find a place to spend the next month, he'd have to return to his mansion. Where his parents would give him that look and proceed to completely ignore him. A sigh escaped his lips. It was around this time that he ended up finding himself standing in front of a large purple tent, with signs pointing inward and the entrance drawn open with a piece of golden twisted rope. Such a beautiful display!!!

The pink haired teen's interest was piqued and he entered the area to find the inside was bigger than it appeared to be on the outside. Vines and leaves dangled from the ceiling, providing an almost jungle-like aura. He could see lit lanterns around, along with jars of fireflies. Long wooden benches and tables filled with crafting materials could be seen and Tone started to get interested in this. What sort of event was this? As he glanced around, he noticed he seemed to be the only one inside. It made it somewhat mystical to him.

What was that?

Tone moved forward to read the three large pieces of parchment set up on the tables before him.

He glanced up as an older woman started to speak, apparently the one to organize this? Ah, they would make their own hotels for these creatures? Well, that was kind of interesting! The pink haired teen looked around at her words to take notice of the fairies, botruckles, and golden snidgets around them. Tone had to admit, he was kind of partial to the golden snidgets because they reminded him of the golden snitch in quidditch games. It kind of helped that originally, they had been used as the Snitch in games. Just not in the present....

Tone thought for a moment and then headed over to the crafting tables to pick up what he thought he might need to make a hotel for some golden snidgets. He settled himself down, selecting an empty space, and reached out to grab a piece of a wooden crate. Breaking it apart a little, he took a flat piece of the crate and set it on the bottom, providing a stable structure. Next, he took some logs and stacked them around the flat surface. "Epoximise!" Tone incanted, using the Gluing Spell to keep the logs in place. It was looking good!

He paused for a moment.

Letting his eyes flicker over the structure, Tone tried to figure out how he wanted to do the next steps.

Eventually, he picked up some long sticks and arranged them all along the edges of the logs inside the hotel. The pink haired teen made sure to leave a large opening in the front of his creation and also left the entire top off. He didn't want to make a roof, his creation was going to be made so the golden snidgets could enter through the main entrance or through the top of the hotel. Tone took a great deal of moss and arranged it on top of the flat piece of wooden crate that was his ground structure. "Epoximise!" He incanted once more.

Taking some plants, he arranged them inside the hotel so that it began to look like a partial greenhouse. Placing some seeds here and there inside, Tone smiled as he finished his creation. A log hotel had been built with a crate bottom lined with moss, sticks providing a foresty layout and a variety of plants making it look as if one was inside nature itself. A few seeds were scattered here and there to attract wildlife. Yes, Tone was very satisfied with his creation of this hotel for the golden snidgets. "Sensei, I'm done." Tone told Sabine.

"Where should I place it?" He asked the witch.

It was the tent itself that intrigued Kit the most. Upon first impressions, it felt out of place yet beautiful in its rich purple exterior with the golden accents via the rope. The tent demanded attention and attention it would get as Kit circled the outside both to get an understanding of its size and design, but also in her attempt to find the entrance. The signs would prove quite helpful, a small laugh once she found it before moving to enter with a final appreciative glance towards the golden rope. If the outside demanded attention, then the inside commanded awe, magic, and mystery- a challenging atmosphere to get when these students were taught about spells on the daily, but it worked in its more natural focus with the vines and magical creatures. A sort of magic that felt untamable to Kit, moving to gently caress one of the leaves just to see if it was real before she truly noticed the parchments.

Ah, so that's what this was here for. The explanation given by the professor cleared any last questions Kit might have had, although 'hotel' was an interesting choice in wording. Temporary, much like camp- but it had a feeling of lavishness Kit hadn't expected. A challenge then. That was fun, although what creature to cater this to? She took a moment to look back at the parchments before glancing back around the tent to where these creatures supposedly 'were'. Sure enough, the flittering wings of the Fairies drew her attention and the vines shifted with the slight weight of the Bowtruckles climbing atop them. The Golden Snidget though was nowhere to be found, nor did the rising fourth year have the patience to wait until one happened to whizz by. They were out of the question then, and Kit was more curious about the Bowtruckles than the small flying humanoids.

While the cans seemed interesting, they also seemed a little small. A whole wooden crate had the opposite problem, but perhaps she could work with it. Considering Bowtruckles resembled and lived in trees, it made sense to make a very natural hotel where they could blend in and potentially attract insects to feast. She'd prop the wooden crate on its side, placing some of the logs and sticks within to act like mini-trees. Essentially her idea was a diorama of a forest while adding sticks on the outside too for them to climb on and explore if the living twigs wanted to. The base of the crate was filled with moss and a small stone path that led nowhere but looked nice. In addition, she'd add some plants so they could grow within the crate and add a little green to the brown.

Kit had debated just gluing everything with regular glue, but upon hearing Tone cast the Gluing Spell she changed her mind. That was a far easier way to go about things, also bringing out her wand to aim at the crate and its variety of accessories now. "Epoximise," she called softly, a smile growing at the successful cast that attached the sticks on the outside. She'd continue the spell until everything was properly secure before taking a moment to step back and admire her work. It was- nice? Kit preferred something a little more vibrant though, deciding that she could probably add a pop of color and attract insects by conjuring up some flowers. Sure, there were already flowers around, but the Fairies were already occupying them and Kit could easily cast the spell.

Or not so easily as it turned out. The cast of "Orchideous," never ended up creating flowers, but instead only the pollen that promptly blew into her nose. She sneezed, dropping her wand in the process as it tumbled on the bench and to the ground. The girl seemed to pause in time for a moment, just to make sure she wouldn't sneeze again, before beginning to reorganize herself with a small apology to anyone nearby. Perhaps flowers weren't a necessary addition at all.

Tone looked up when someone entered.

A familiar face had reunited with him! He remembered her from the Sugar Fair, Niffler Hunt, and Pet Fair.

The two had met earlier and although they hadn't done much together, they knew their names at least! He couldn't wait to get to know her a bit more. Even though they went to different schools, they could always write letters to eachother and eventually they'd meet up again too. Either for a global event, one of the balls Hogwarts held, or some other kind of gathering. He'd try and get her address sometime before summer camp ended. Writing letters to others was one of the highlights of his days when the teen was back at home.

If this was any other time, he'd rush over to wrap her up in a warm hug but right now he wanted to finish his 'hotel' and get it set up for the snidgets. Once it was done, he'd have plenty of time to catch up and interact with Kit. Later, once he'd completed his project, Tone headed over to the girl. Right in time to almost get a whiff of pollen in his face. Luckily, he was able to dodge it, although Kit was not as fortunate to do so. She started to sneeze and ended up dropping her wand, which fell off the bench and onto the ground floor inside.

The pink haired teen crouched down and picked the wand up.

He waited until Kit's sneezes had stopped or at least slowed down. Once they had, Tone approached her.

A smile could be seen on his face. "Good to see you again, Kit! Your creation looks nice!" He said, letting his eyes flicker over the Bowtruckles 'hotel' she'd made. It looked naturish which was awesome!

Kit had fully expected to look down and see her wand still on the ground, already starting to reach down beneath the table and quickly grab it. But someone else had already done that for her, green eyes glancing up to see Tone, a familiar face as someone also participating in the camp activities and she was pretty sure another Quidditch enjoyer? Regardless, a smile broke out across her face and her attention would turn towards him instead, finalized project currently forgotten for the time being as she was given the opportunity to chat.

"Hi, Tone! Good to see you again, too! Thanks for picking up my wand and sorry about the pollen- I hadn't expected the spell to actually backfire, but-" She shrugged lightly. Despite being a witch, spellcasting had never been Kit's forte- she could get her broom to fly and go in the right directions and that was all the fourth year needed. "Ah, thanks!" She'd glance over towards his creation, noticing the similarities in aesthetic yet different design choices from there. It made sense considering the more natural resources provided that a lot of the hotels would have that feel even with color changing spells available (Kit didn't know how neon pink twigs would look), so she nodded approvingly before turning her attention back to the boy. "Yours looks great too- very foresty, I like the plant additions. Were you also making a hotel for the Bowtruckles or one of the others?"

Despite their continued brief interactions, the Beauxbatons student didn't actually know a lot about the other. Her head tilted, glancing back at him with an inquisitive gaze as she spoke up once more. "How have you been? Has your cabin been treating you well?" She'd pause there for now, although more questions popped to mind. It was small talk sure, but hopefully it'd be enough to start a conversation or let her know if he'd rather not.

Tone smiled at the girl before him.

It was kind of sweet she'd be worrying about her spell hitting others in the vicinity, not a lot would.

After all, it was just an accident and not her fault, plus she'd gotten hit by it too! Most people in her situation would not be concerned about others and be more focused on themselves. Especially since her spell hadn't actually hit anyone else at the time. "Don't worry about it, my reflexes are pretty good. Even though beaters don't tend to have the quick eyesight seekers do, we're good at avoiding attacks!" Tone said with a cheeky grin and glanced back at his 'hotel' as Kit complimented his own creation.

The pink haired nearly fourteen year old, come September, shook his head at her next words. "Nah, I made one for the Golden Snidgets. I hope they like it, I thought they might feel comfortable in something like this." Tone told Kit and suddenly saw one mid-air. "Ah! There's one!" He hadn't been able to see them that well at first but now that he wasn't working on the 'hotel' it was easier to see them. Well, for him at least. The one in question was about to check out his hotel and Tone smiled. Would it like it?

It hovered over the top and then descended.

Until it settled inside briefly and then flew off again, only to come back a few seconds later to settle.

Yes! It seemed to like the hotel he'd made! Tone was distracted when Kit spoke again and looked over at her when she asked how his cabin was. "It's fine. The people there are great. I hope to see them all again in the future! What about you?" The thirteen year old asked, curious. "What do you do in your cabin? Anything fun going on?" Tone asked, letting his eyes flicker over her for a moment. It really was a shame they couldn't visit other cabins. But then, Tone knew that had the potential to get chaotic.

Perhaps that was the reason for the rule. He waited for Kit to respond to his questions.

He seemed to take the apology well, even making a bit of a joke out of it. She appreciated that, her own smile growing as she grew a little more curious as the student before her. "Ah beater, right! A Chaser myself," she offered, in case he was unaware or she hadn't mentioned it earlier. "Yeah exactly, quick reflexes are pretty important even as a Beater- it seems like a cool position, although a lot more intense than being Chaser. How d'you like it?" Those were her own observations from the games she participated in or watched. Her only trouble came if she had the Seeker with her, then dodging became a very necessary skill that Kit was proud to say she did rather well. "Are you excited for the summer games, then? I'm curious to see how they'll pair everyone up with the amount of schools and students here. Hopefully we're not competing though- I'd love to watch your game." She didn't really want to be on the receiving end of his bludgering though, preferring to keep her visits to the Hospital Wing to a minimum.

"Oh cool! I haven't been able to see them yet-" Of course it was then that Tone would point one out. She blinked, widening her eyes before squinting at the air that he seemed to be looking at until eventually there was a flash of gold that quickly vanished. Kit would lose the Golden Snidget once more until it seemed to slow down and examine Tone's hotel. Her mouth formed an o, wanting to comment further but not wanting to scare it for the time being until it seemed to have properly settled in the shelter. "That's so cool! They're quite majestic." Almost a little scary with the red eyes and how quickly they flew, but she'd shake that thought for now.

"Yeah, the people have been pretty nice so far. We had our own little candy exchange the first day which was nice- otherwise it's been kind of calm? Plenty of other distractions and things to do around the rest of camp that I'm always exhausted by the time I get back to the cabin." She laughed softly. "Strange thing to think that we're more than halfway through the month- have you had a favorite out of the activities so far? Any plans for the rest of summer after?" Kit wasn't too sure what her answers to the questions would be, but she was curious how he might respond.

Tone nodded at Kit.

"Oh, nice! Maybe during the summer quidditch games we'll be paired together."

"I know they usually combine two schools for them." Tone said with a smile. "I like being a beater, it gives me something to focus on doing while I'm up in the sky and makes things even more fun for me. I like a challenge but am also pretty competitive when it comes to my team. What about you? How's being a chaser make you feel?" He asked, curious. "I'd rather not be up against you, I feel as if we'd work pretty well together." Tone agreed and nodded at her next words.

"Snidgets are pretty cool, I know they used to use them as the original golden snitches. But then after they were hunted into extinction, they changed to using the ones we use now. I wish I could have experienced how quidditch games were back then." Tone said with a sigh, thinking about how cool that would have been. Hell, maybe he'd have even applied to be a seeker. After all, going after cool gold things that were alive sounded quite fun to him! Even if he had to give up his bat for it...

But things had changed over the years.

Golden snitches were the things that were used now and they did the trick just as well as the snidgets.

Enough of that. Time to move on to another topic! He didn't want Kit getting bored after all. She mentioned something about a candy exchange and Tone grinned. "Ah fun! Sweets are so tasty! I grabbed some from the Sweet Fair during the first day and distributed them amongst my cabin mates afterward. A lot of them devoured them, although some stayed away but I'm glad they all got eaten. Some things were delicious, like the cookies and pastries!" He said with a smile on his lips.

"I enjoyed all the summer activities. Maybe the most fun was the Niffler Hunt and the Pet Fair for me. Because I love animals and pets of all kinds. What about you?" Tone asked.

"Oh, that'd be pretty cool! They do, and I don't think our whole team made it to summer camp..." It was certainly a possibility then, a smile growing at the thought- it was unlikely, but she could still wonder. The focus part made sense, there was always something for the Beaters to be doing whether that be protecting their own team or trying to knock the others out of the sky. It was certainly a challenge to be carrying around a bat and successfully hitting the bludger while not throwing yourself off- that was one of Kit's worries with the position, although she hadn't really tried enough to even know if that was possible. She'd nod along, before offering her own insight.

"That's fair! I've always enjoyed Chaser because it's a pretty versatile position and feels closer to some other sports I've tried out- I'm also less worried about getting knocked out the sky." She laughed lightly, "but I agree with the competitiveness part! Either in trying to score goals or keeping my team in the air by catching them- or maybe even helping out the seeker, I've always enjoyed the options even if it sometimes means you end up doing nothing for a bit." That had been her experience, scanning the skies for falling teammates to learn that all had stayed on their brooms. At least the revelation was good, but it did feel a little silly when she could have helped score. "Well if it doesn't end up having in the summer game, we can always try to organize sometime to practice together or a mock game." She shrugged, head tilting slightly to the side as she offered the idea. Camp was pretty full with activities already, so Kit wouldn't be surprised if there simply wasn't the time but at least the thought and intention was out there.

"Mhm!" The signs up had mentioned that, although it didn't offer much more details on the history. She hadn't known about the hunted to extinction part, blue-green eyes widening at the mention. "Oh. Yeah, would definitely need a replacement after that. I hope their populations are doing better now- it would've been interesting to see." Kit acknowledged, her sentiments not aligning with Tone's mainly because she cared little about the Snitch except for its points. Both hid themselves well with their speedy flying despite their golden appearance, so a game with a Snidget instead while being a Chaser... not much different. But she was glad he seemed to enjoy the thought.

"Yeah, sugar's great!" She laughed lightly, ducking her head. "It's hard not to devour them- I admire the self control of those few- it's good that they were all enjoyed though! And I hope you saved enough for yourself, too?" At pastries and cookies came a wistful sigh, eyes staring off into space with a smile for a moment. "Pastries are my favorite- it's just so unfortunate that they don't tend to last long or do well on trips. Did you have a favorite of the desserts?" The Beauxbatons girl knew he had bought plenty during the Fair although how much of it went to him versus his camp was unknown- regardless, that meant plenty of options to taste and have opinions on.

"I think my personal favorite was the Gnome Races, although the Niffler Hunt was certainly a close second. Nifflers are just so cute even if we weren't able to find too much- but the Gnomes were pretty entertaining and competitive." She paused, a slight bow of her head before tilting her head slightly at Tone. "Animals though, they're pretty adorable- do you have any pets of your own or?"

Tone nodded.

"Our whole team came, except for our second string seeker." He told her with a little shrug.

"We don't actually have 3 chasers but I hope that will change soon. Maybe with the new year there will be students interested in trying out for the position." Tone said with a smile. "Who are you missing from your team?" He asked, curious. She'd said not all of their team had come to summer camp, which meant there were some missing from the lineup. Tone nodded as he listened to her speak about being a chaser. "Sounds like fun. Maybe some day I'll try it out sometime in a practice match..."

"I won't ever switch though, I have too much fun being a beater. It's something I knew was right for me as soon as I'd tried it out." Tone said with a grin, his face lighting up even more as he talked about quidditch. "Mm. Sounds like a plan! I'd love to play with you sometime in the future!" The pink haired boy said, liking the idea of getting together and playing quidditch. No matter what happened in the summer games between the two of them, Tone wouldn't just drop her because of the result.

It was a game.

Players won and lost all the time. They couldn't keep winning all the time. The same went for losing.

If you lost you got back at the person, if you won you tried to keep winning to tease them! It was kind of how you built up camaraderie between guys. But sometimes it worked with girls too. Tone nodded at Kit's question about the sweets from before. "Yeah, I ate a lot of sweets that day and nibbled on some afterward too. The pastries were the best and eaten fresh were delicious! But the rest of them were pretty tasty too. They should do something like this every year for the students." He said.

"After all, it would be nice to indulge every summer." Well, for him at least. "Nifflers are really cute to me. Even though they steal shiny things all the time, they're really adorable." Tone told her with a smile. He let his eyes flicker around the area, they were still the only two inside the place. But their creations seemed to have made the golden snidgets and bowtruckles really happy. Tone kind of felt bad for the fairies. They were the only ones without a bug-hotel. What if no one else came in to see them later???

He thought for a moment. "You built a hotel for the bowtruckles and I built one for the golden snidgets. But the fairies don't have anything right now. Want to build one together with me for them? Just in case no one else comes in later? I feel kind of bad for them." Tone said as he looked over at Kit, waiting to hear her thoughts on the matter. "As for pets, I unfortunately don't have any at home." He said, not elaborating on the reason. The reason was much too personal to reveal to her.

Tone had never done so to anyone.

Because the truth of the matter was heartbreaking. "Do you?" The pink haired teen asked Kit.
