For misbehaving and setting a classroom on fire, especially from his son, he felt that he needed to make sure this punishment was particularly stern and intimidating. And he had an idea. He set out the materials he needed. They had 6 hours with Octavius starting after breakfast. They were to spend the time listening to Octavius sing disco songs, such as Love Hurts and Sisters. He wasn't exactly a good singer, so that would prove to be an increased incentive. Now, he had placed out materials to repair his shaggy carpet. [Shag Carpet DIY]

That was for Clark. Now as for August, well, August had to write 300 words as to explain why he set the boxes on fire. In the end, towards the last hour, both Clark and August would be expected to write 300 words for why fire is bad, and why destruction is not good, and not a great way to act out.

On the chalkboard, he had inscribed the words "August" and "Clark" in underline. Underneath, their tasks were given. If Octavius looked at what task you were given and approved it, that task would be cleared from the list. They were in trouble, and he was angry. Why wouldn't he be?

His vibes, his eccentric jives were destroyed, charred. How awful of those kids.

"Hello Clark and August. You are here to serve your detention. You are here until I tell you that you can leave. Give me your wands, there will be no magic here. Everything will be done by hand. And if you have the anti-cheating quill, you won't be using that. I have a pencil for you all and a hand-held pencil sharpener if you need to sharpen it. Have fun! Don't mess with my room anymore, nor any other rooms in this castle or your punishment will be worse than what it is now." Octavius said pensively. "After all, you both will be expected to write 300 words towards the end of detention, but Clark, you're fixing my carpet, and August, you're writing. Your tasks are on the board."

There was no regret in what Octavius had done. He truly was angry about it. What inspired his son to set his room on fire? Did he- want Octavius dead? Or- for Octavius to go away? Admittedly, he also hoped that everyone had heard that he had given his son a detention for proof that he does, in fact, punish as necessary- despite the fact that he doesn't like it.

While singing Disco Songs, for the time given, he took to scrubbing the lens of the enchanted telescopes, but still keeping a close eye on Clark and August. Both seemed to be a bit suspicious after yesterday's action.

Great, spiritually dragged into the Astronomy Classroom. Why the hell not? Why not just become a freaking man and act like he were mature and not going to evade the freaking terrifying punishments that were to be given to him. He wondered how serious the situation could be, after all, not everything, at least to Clark, would be hard. And knowing his father, he figured that the detention wouldn't be hard at all.

As he entered the classroom, he first thing he saw was Octavius waiting on the two, and his name on the chalkboard. Gross. Hopefully he wasn't required to write today. He had a solution to it, hopefully his father wouldn't know nor find out Clark's way to circumvent writing if that were the case that day. As soon as his father explained the tasks, he wasted no time, and decided to dart off to get his materials, and got down on the ground, to try and fix the carpet. Granted, he was given paper, wool, and a needle.

Why Octavius gave Clark a needle, he wouldn't know, but Clark decided to half-ass what he was to do, and put paper underneath the scorched area, yanking the burnt wool out of the carpet, tearing it a bit. His dad could live without a carpet. As he yanked all the burnt wool out, he put the wool through the end of the needle and poked a hole in the paper, going through the carpet and then looping it back around to create individual fibers in the carpet. Once he had done that, he saw he didn't have a knife nor a scissor. Oh, if only if he had the wand. He removed the wool from the end of the needle and chewed on the end of the thread so he could tie it up and wrap the yarn around the yarn ball.

There, he was done with that task. But what else did he have to do? Put himself through the torture of having to write? Absolutely gross.

Well, he wasn't asked to do it yet, so he figured he might as well take the time to fix the rest of the carpet. Repeating the same process he had done for the burnt section- instead of yanking burnt pieces out- he had gently pulled them out, little by little. He retied the yarn to the needle for the same effect he had done earlier. Oh, and of course his father wasn't done singing yet. "SHUT UP DAD!" But it seemed that despite his yelling, his father wasn't stopping. He liked disco music, but his father didn't have the voice nor the ability to sing high notes- as such as for Staying Alive. And that was all he had drilling into his head right now.

This was bloody torture. Who employed him? Clark wanted to speak to the employer. He had complaints. Anything to get rid of Octavius. He was bloody miserable, and he couldn't sing. What other reason did you need to get rid of someone? If it worked for Octavius, perhaps he should try and get Logan expelled simply because she was related to him.

A perfectly good Wednesday, which could be spent doing so many more productive things than this. Hours upon hours were to be spent in detention that day. Although it was earned by both, August still was internally kicking himself for getting caught in the first place. Usually he was so careful to keep any and all wrongdoings under wraps. He could hardly believe that it was only a mere six days into his first year at Hogwarts, and he had already landed himself a detention. What would his father say when the news reached his ears? Nothing pleasant, that was for sure.

Entering the Astronomy Tower, he saw the professor scribbling instructions on the blackboard and sighed heavily. What had he gotten himself into? He reluctantly handed over his wand, his face turning sour as his tasks were revealed. The writing wasn't too bad, but listening to the singing was just awful. The sooner he got the papers done, the sooner he could get away from the so called "music."

Why I Set Your Things On Fire, he titled the paper.

First things first, I just want to make it known that I did not wake up that day and think 'I want to go set some stuff on fire for fun.' That is not how I operate. I would not usually set things on fire at all, much less purely for entertainment purposes. I was on a walk around the castle, when I noticed Clark, who I did not know at the time, attempting to burn down the tower. (I don't mean to throw him under the bus, but since we've been caught...) I was quite curious as to what he was doing, so I approached him to ask if he had some sort of a grudge against the subject, the professor, etc. He began immediately to yell at me to join him in the burning of your classroom. As I'm sure you are well aware, we Ravenclaws are naturally curious, and in this moment, my curiosity got the better of me. After figuring out how his matchbox worked, I started to burn things as well, which I feel the deepest remorse for doing. I simply wanted to know more about why Clark felt the need to burn seemingly all the things within the classroom. In short, I was pressured into doing it. Partially from Clark taking me by surprise yelling at me to start fires and thrusting the matchbox into my hands, but partially from my own curiosity. I still am unsure as to why I was persuaded into the starting of the fires so easily, but rest assured if I could live the day over again, I would not burn your things, or for that matter, even venture up to the Astronomy Tower in the first place. I truly am sorry for the damages I caused in my moments of poor judgement, and I hope you can forgive me.

There. Perhaps it lay on the side of a little too much kissing up, but it was sure to get the job done. Truthfully, August wouldn't have gone up to the tower if he had known where it would've landed him, and he didn't just go around starting fires. However, he was only sorry for two things. The damages he inflicted upon the equipment (after all, he was one of the students who would be using it), and for being so stupid as to let himself be caught and not even try to talk his way out of it.

Just as August finished his first paper, Clark shouted out "SHUT UP DAD!" This was new information for August, and he burst out saying, "Dad?! You were burning stuff because you had a grudge against your father?" He was outraged. He had been dragged into the middle of family drama he did not need to have gotten a detention for. "You have got to be joking." He wanted to keep talking, but Professor Baird's singing was still grating on his every nerve.

The next paper earned itself the title "Destruction, Fire, and the Harm It Causes.

Destruction and fire are bad things because they are violent, vicious, unpredictable, and can hurt others. Take into account the burning of the Astronomy classroom. If the fire had gotten out of hand, it could have spread throughout the school, which would have impacted other student's educations. If the fire had blocked the way out of the tower, Clark and I could have been in serious danger. Even without it spreading or blocking the doorway, we still could have been hurt. A couple of eleven and twelve year old boys trying to cast dangerous spells is not the safest of activities, especially outside of class. At Hogwarts, we only have our wands to extinguish fire, which, if it had spread would have been difficult to put out, to say the least. On that note, I have read that the muggles have invented a machine that will actually alert you when there is fire. Perhaps Hogwarts should invest in recreating those, but with magic obviously. Think of the way the school would improve. If there was another incident like the one I was just involved in (once again, I am so very sorry for that) you would be alerted immediately, instead of letting the fires get out of hand until you arrive at the scene. Anyway, back to the harm fire can cause. I have heard burns are quite painful little buggers, thankfully I have never experienced one. However, while setting the fires, Clark and I might have been seriously burned in the process, resulting in a dreaded visit to the hospital wing, or worse, we might've even ended up in St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. I shudder at the very thought. In conclusion, destruction and fire are bad things for their violent and unpredictable natures, and for the fact that others or ourselves could have been hurt.

Another sappy paper finished, which meant August's detention would be over soon, so long as Professor Baird thought the papers good enough. He walked over to the professor, cleared his throat, and handed him the papers. While the professor read them, August would wait apprehensively, desperately hoping to get out of here soon.

What Goes Around Comes Around detention pv Aug. Clark.
Sure, he was soooo brilliant by attempting to do extra, but Clark wasn't exactly as intelligent as he would've wanted to have been, and he knew it. "Dad. I'm serious. Shut up. I don't want to singing. What are you trying to do? Punish me? This feels like punishment." A short heaving breath and he stomped on his way to the desks, attempting to make himself seem like he's not giving up on his trouble-making ways, but rather to show that he could be as immature as he wished and no one could stop him. He was 12 after all, wasn't he?

Then there were chatter from the other pyromaniac in the room. "Listen." The part goblin started. "My father is a jerk and therefore I reserve the right to set fire to things." That didn't sound right at all. He set fire to things just because of the blatant lie that his father was mean? If anything, he knew that Octavius would have Clark's back no matter the situation- even when he was in the midst of destruction. "And uh- no, I'm not joking."

He had something clever to say but decided to drop it. He needn't let whatever clever thing he was going to say further soil the relationship he had with August.

Titling his paper that he apparently had to write about- he considered naming it after something but after a moment of hesitation and consideration, he decided against it.

Fire Safety
The danger of being in fire is truly- well- hazardous to our lives, and we probably shouldn't be igniting a fire out of anger towards someone. Especially someone who loves me and would do anything just for me, including having my back during the horrifying moments of being confronted by a professor or a prefect after committing a crime that would surely have me incarcerated some day in the future.

Fire is bad because it can kill people. It destroys things, it isn't exactly the best solution for managing your problems. Here's why I set fire to your room. I was angry and therefore abused my magic by being a pyromaniacal child, someone some could call spoiled. Or just plain old insane. I've been called both before, and it would be because of my obsession with destruction. And I find that I set fire to things just because I'm angry and need to release some tensions within me- but I probably need to find a better mechanism that won't endanger others nor destroy things.

If it was necessarily important to know why fire was bad, there's a few reasons that I can think of at the top of my head. Yes, it hurts others, obviously, by scalding them and burning them. There are also chemicals and increased levels of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and thermal irritants that can increase your risk of death by damaging your respiratory system.

Destruction is bad too, but I don't want to go in depth about it, with the exception of mentioning that it can harm people, that it costs money to repair, that it could harm the person destroying things, and that it could cause others to lose their waning trust in you.

In short, fire is bad and shouldn't be played with. Nor should destruction be considered unless you're legally allowed to destroy things and are wearing safety gear to help try and resolve the issue of getting hurt, even if it doesn't exactly help completely.

Clark Baird

Well, Clark was done. Now all he needed to do was to turn it in to his horrid father that people seemed to like. Was he really the only one that wasn't a fan of him being in the school?

Octavius enjoyed his groovy singing, and if he had to do it again, he definitely would. He found it funny how Clark was like him, so immersed in the muggle past- specifically the decade of the 1970s, but continued rioting against his bloody singing.

"Clark William Baird-Cart- Oh uh- CLARK BAIRD. Do not tell me what to do." He said referring to his son telling him to shut up. "You are in here for a reason. If you continue, I will extend YOUR detention and dismiss August. Watch your tone. Show respect." Hoping that would help instill a better behavorial situation with his son.

He saw August approach with two letters. He took a glance over the paper and saw that it was in a giant paragraph, which is fine, but makes it a little harder to count each word. As he finished counting both, he saw it fit to dismiss August. "August. Don't ever set fire to my room, ever again. Don't set fire to anyone else's rooms, nor destroy their properties. I know you can be a good human, so be a good person. Make good choices, or the next time we meet, it will be worse than writing a total of 600 words in a day."

And then Clark was turning in his paper. "Yeah, Clark, I asked you for an essay, not opinions." He said, fully aware of August's mention of both Clark and August in the second essay. "Next time, I want an actual essay." He said. "Good job on the carpet, it looks good."
