Leg-Locker Curse | locomotor mortis (LOH-koh-moh-tor MOR-tis)

It was her first day of officially practicing fourth year spells. The thrill of knowing she had the ability to literally surpass her year was thrilling, but she tried to calm herself down. As she had learnt. Extreme emotions wouldn't help her learning process.
She skipped over the Bubble-head Charm, since she didn't really like swimming anyways and couldn't think of any situation where the spell would prove useful.
Maybe if you accidentally fell into the lake and started drowning, it would be useful, her intrusive thought reminded her.
Shut up, she told herself. She would learn a fun spell today. Then maybe learn the useful one another time.
She chose the second spell in the textbook to practice: the Leg-Locker Curse. The name was cool. It was a little like Petrificus Totalus, in way. Guinevere liked the latter spell as well, so she decided this would be the perfect first fourth year spell to learn.
The spell's incantation was what she decided to tackle first. "LOH-koh-moh-tor MOR-tis," she said slowly, stressing the 'loh' and 'mor' syllables. She had found that the incantation did a lot to the success of the spell, so she tried to make it as accurate as possible.
She repeated the words a few more times, and then moved on to figuring out the wand movement. It was in the shape of a backwards L on top of a flatter regular L, which she tried to imitate as best as she could. When starting, she worried about accidentally casting the spell while practicing, which she soon found was impossible, since it was a rather hard spell to master, so she put her full focus onto mastering the wand movement after that worry was resolved.
Guinevere flipped closed the textbook and put everything back into her bag, and went upstairs to the duelling club to finally put her learning to the test.
Thankfully, the room was mostly empty, so no one would be around to see her fail spectacularly. She got a dummy from the side and placed it around five meters from her.
"Locomotor mortis!" she said clearly, while swishing her wand in the movement dictated by the textbook. The dummy didn't move, and only what she thought was a weak red beam of light drifted out of her wand.
Clenching her teeth, she tried again, putting more concentration into the spell. "Locomotor mortis!" A stronger red flash came out of her wand this time, but as it hit the dummy, the light only dissapated and nothing happened.
Practice makes progress, she told herself, and readied herself to try again.
Around ten or so tries later, Guinevere had sucessfully casted the spell.
"Locomotor mortis!" she had practically shouted, and the dummy's legs locked together, sending it toppling to the ground.
Overjoyed, she almost shouted "YESS" out loud. Almost. She caught herself just in time.
Walking over, she cast finite incantatem on the dummy, and made it stand upright again.
She practiced for a few more minutes, and once she was satisfied with the quality of the spell, she put the dummy back and left the duelling club room.

Impediment Hex | impedimenta (im-PED-i-MEN-ta)

Guinevere decided it would be beneficial to do a bit more learning than usual, since the next duelling championship circut was just around the corner. She did not want to be unprepared, like last year's undesirable events.
The next spell in her textbook was Arania Exumai, the Spider Repelling Spell, but Guinevere did not find the prospect of finding actual spiders to practice on exciting, thus she had hastily flipped the page. Spiders were not on the top of her list of fears (a list which she preferred to not mention), but were definitely on there somewhere. The next page was labelled "The Impediment Hex," which she found interesting. She could simply cast the dancing feet spell on a dummy, then practice the spell upon the already-dancing dummy. It would be rather hard to find a fellow student willing to be cast on, not that she wanted to, anyways. She would be in trouble if she suddenly turned said student into a stone or something.
Guinevere spent the next minutes reviewing the pages that had relevance to the Impediment Hex. The spell was supposed to slow or hinder the target, which she found similar to the full-body bind spell and leg-locker spell. She supposed the purpose would be to slowly make the victim realize they couldn't move, instead of full on petrifying them and making them fall to the floor. Of course, more variation and diversity in her spell vocabulary was not something she would say no to, so she read on, arriving to the part where the textbook outlined the steps of casting the spell.
The incantation was im-PED-i-MEN-ta, so she slowly sounded it out until she could say it properly. For Guinevere, she found that saying the incantation aloud many times helped a lot with her memorizing the spell, which would be useful, since no one wanted to suddenly forget which syllables of the incantation to stress in the middle of a tense situtation.
The wand movement was relatively easy; just one straight horizontal movement of the wand, so she felt that she could master the spell easily as well. The Slytherin picked up her things to go to the Duelling Club.
She found that quite a few people were already there, but all of them were practicing against each other and left the training dummies conveniently vacant. Guinevere dragged the nearest one to an open piste, and after reviewing the content she had learned just a few minutes ago, she was ready to try the spell.
First, she would cast Tarantallegra on the dummy, which she did without trouble. It was one of the first spells she had learnt at Hogwarts, after all. She then stepped back a few steps and slashed her wand sideways while saying, “Impedimenta!” A weak flash of turquoise light came out of her wand, dying mid-air.
She tried again. "Im-PED-i-MEN-ta," she said, slowly prounouncing the syllables of the incantation while waving her wand horizantally. The light produced by her wand made it's way towards the dummy, which temporarily slowed in its dancing. She tried again, again, and then once more, until finally she seemed to reach some sort of consistency with her casting. Satisfied, she decided to rest for a while. She might try to learn another spell later. (547 words)

Sheild Charm | protego (pro-TAY-goh)

After a break following her practicing the Impediment Hex, Guinevere decided to continue on, sticking to her original plan. A group of duellists had moved to the piste she had been using, but there was still many more open.
The sheild charm was one she had seen many duelists cast. It would definitely be very useful for her, as a backup plan in case she was stuck on her own in a duel and her odds weren't good. That had happened one or two times already, and she didn't really want to be in that kind of situation a lot. Currently, she could think of a lot of different strategies that involved the spell, a sign of her getting a step ahead of herself already, before she even started learning background info for the shield charm.
Speaking of which, it was time to do just that. The Slytherin duellist opened up her year 4 textbook and a quill to underline and write annotations in the margins with. She had seen other students annotate their textbooks, and decided that it too could help with her studying.
In short, Protego was a spell that conjured up an invisible shield that could deflect or absorb spells that were sent towards the caster if casted correctly. It could also block physical forces, which could also be useful should situations like that would arise.
Guinevere was honestly also rather surprised on how easy, or at least simple, the wand movement was. It was just the the one for Impedimenta, except turned 90 degrees to a horizontal slash instead of vertical. The incantation however wasn't how she had expected it. It was pro-TAY-goh, and instead, she had first thought it was pro-TEH-go. She was glad she had caught her mistake before something went wrong while she was casting the spell. She repeated that to herself a couple times, and then walked out to the piste to finally try it for herself. She wasn't sure how she could ensure the quality of her sheild, but soon she found a classmate also hanging around the duelling club, and asked her to cast spells at her sheild.
"Protego," she said while slashing her wand horizontally. It was rather underwhelming. Nothing happened. As expected. But it was fine. Practice made perfect, right? "Pro-TAY-go," she said again, saying the incantation slower this time. Something seemed to happen to the air before her eyes; it seemed to flicker, then go back into place. Right on cue, her classmate's flipendo sped towards her, and Guin braced for impact. Instead, the force only came as a slight push, instead of the regular force of a flipendo. A small success, but still she needed her shield to be fully functioning.
She tried again, and time after time she could feel the force of the flipendo become smaller and smaller, until after a few minutes of practicing, where she actually saw her classmate stumble a few steps backward from the reflected spell. She definitely hadn't been expecting that to work that well.
Guin wasn't sure how to deactivate her shield, so she just tried to walk through it, and hoped that got rid of it. "Thanks," she said to her classmate, who told her 'no problem' in return. She went back to the spectating stands, where her things were, and put everything in her bag and left the duelling club after another day of successful spell practicing.
