History: Jacob is the 4th and youngest child of Greg and Susie Shank. Susie is a witch from London, who met and fell in love with Greg, a muggle from Portugal, while on a Herbology expedition in Portugal. Jacob has lived in Surbiton, London with his family his whole life, though they have traveled a fair amount on vacations and research trips with his mum. Being from the city, the family has always been extremely careful about using magic for fear that a muggle would get suspicious. His mum would do simple household spells and potions and such, things that wouldn't raise any eyebrows.
Jake attended muggle school from the age of 5 to 11, partially to keep up appearances, but as he studied he gained a love for school and learning. His family members taught him little bits of magic, but always while being careful of the nearby muggles. His first instance of magic was actually quite small and simple. While looking at the magical plants Jacob's mum was studying, the plant itself began to glow and hum, and small sparks flew out of the bud of the plant. Jacob thought this was just something the plant did, but his mum was very surprised and recognized that the plant was responding to the magic inside of Jacob as he interacted with it, and explained that this was a manifestation of his magical abilities.

Jacob's mum, Susie, is a respected Herbologist and a bit eccentric, but in the best way. She has a secret area of the house that is magically hidden and absolutely full of magical plants. She loves to collect magical and non-magical knick knacks and make her house feel like a true home for her family.
Jacob's dad Greg is a muggle nerd who works in computer programming and indie gaming. He is a good man with a happy heart, and since falling for Jacob's mum and learning that magic exists he has become just as nerdy about the Wizarding world and all it entails as he is about everything else. He finds magic fun, fascinating, and exciting, and is always very involved in his kids education both magical and not.
Liz and Francis are older and have graduated from Hogwarts. Liz is a hard working stay-at-home mum with a new baby. She and her husband are both a bit judgey and self-righteous for Jacob's taste. Francis is a goofball but pretty unmotivated and living with mum and dad while he figures out what he's gonna do now that he is done at Hogwarts. So far hasn't found a real passion. Jewel is a fifth year at Hogwarts, cool and cute and popular, but always has Jacob's back. She is Jacob's best friend and confidant. She's currently dating a 5th year named Zach who is pretty funny.
Physical Appearance: Jacob is lanky and tall, with an understated gait. A small, wry smile seems to always be on his face. He's got a twinkle in his curious eyes hidden behind thin glasses, a small but angular nose, thin lips, and unruly eyebrows. His dark hair is pushed back and to the side in a calm black wave down past his ears. He has light olive skin and often ties his ties too short.
Mental Traits: Jacob is a very curious boy, constantly seeking knowledge and personal growth. His curiousity can get him into trouble, but most of the time it leads to an exciting or silly adventure. His heart is pure, and though his main motivation is knowledge and achievment, that will never come at the cost of others, especially his friends. Jacob is competitive, but doesn't let ambition get in the way of fun (usually). He would love to join the quidditch team, though Jacob is not known for his coordination or athletic ability. He's self-conscious like most new tweens, and can withdraw when nervous or scared in social situations. Jacob is, above all, kind and honest. He is also quite funny, and often uses humor to help put others at ease and feel comfortable. He's very likable, but can be awkward and overzealous.
Hobbies/Interests:
Music - a fascination with magical musical instruments, and how music can influence magic.
Herbology and Potions - passed down from his mum. He especially likes to dabble in potions experiments with the plants he studies.
Flying - he flew on a broom once while on vacation and loved the feeling, and is anxious to learn more.
Games - wizard chess, exploding snap, and even makes up his own games like his dad.
Forbidden knowledge - especially Astronomy and Ancient magics.
Collecting - Chocolate Frog cards are his favorite.
Adventure - he is excited to try to discover hidden passages and secret rooms within Hogwarts Castle.

Challenges:
Jacob unknowingly is gay. He can be a little feminine, but not so much that people would assume he was gay. It's something he will figure out throughout his years at Hogwarts. He occasionally gets bullied for not being "manly" enough, and that can be hard on him. His biggest bully is his older brother Francis, who is a little homophobic. Jacob's parents aren't exactly huge LGBTQ allies now, but they would be kind and want to be supportive if/when they find out.
Jacob sometimes says things in odd ways, a trait he picked up from his mum and from his love of books and old english literature. Sometimes it comes off as charming or witty, but it often is clunky or showboaty. Jacob can sometimes be desperate for attention and be a bit annoying, but he always comes from a good place.
Jacob struggles with perfectionism. He believes he is meant to be something special and is afraid he won't live up to his expectations. He takes any failure pretty hard.
