Rare Simplicity
Date: August 5th, 2023 | Time: Midday
───────────────────────────────────The exhaustion of a long day searching for supplies seemed to drain away as Avery gently tugged her mother along towards one particular shop, the last stop on their rather exhaustive list. It was one that she'd taken interest in the previous year, but had caved to her mother's request to first settle into this strange new world she'd found herself thrust into. Looking back a year later, the newly coined second year could somewhat begrudgingly admit that her mother had, perhaps, had a good point. The first year at Hogwarts was hectic all on its own.
Wasting no more time, Avery ducks into the Menagerie knowing her mother would be close behind. The sound of all manner of animals immediately hits her, as does the distinctive smell. Having had an entire year to sit on it and consider a choice, she already had a relatively clear idea of what she was looking for. Making her way over to the owls, Avery peers up at the selection of birds with wide eyes. She feels her mother come up behind her just before a hand settles on her shoulder. Looking up at her mother, she can see the expected apprehension already making an appearance.
"Are you sure you don't want something more simple, like a...a cat?" Cara questions, pointing towards the assortment of felines lazing about nearby. Avery doesn't bother looking, opting instead to continue peering at the owls before them. "Yeah, but owls are super useful! And cool. I wouldn't have to use the school owls to write you anymore, at least." The excuse was somewhat flimsy, considering her writing habit had been somewhat, purposefully, lacking the past year, but she quickly continues on. "And I can write to my friends over the summer as well. And dad's been complaining about the mice in the barn."
Avery turns her head slightly to smile as innocently as she can at her mother as she rattles of reasoning that she hopes will help sway her. As the youngest of three, she'd had to work hard on perfecting that pleading smile she knew worked on at least one of her parents. It just so happened to be her mother that would cave to it. An exasperated sigh is released by the older woman before she slings an arm over Avery's shoulder before she levels her with an amused smile. "Fine, fine. It is your choice, after all, just make sure you take proper care of it. Do you have one in mind?"
With half the mission accomplished, Avery looks back to the owls and zeroes in on one that had initially caught her attention. While many of the larger birds demanded attention by size alone, it was one of the smaller crates that drew her eye. It housed a relatively small owl, and while it may not have been as overtly majestic as some of the larger breeds, the beautiful simplicity was what drew her to it. And, on the plus side, a smaller bird would likely gain her points back with her parents. She points to the crate after another moment of consideration. "I think I'll go with this one."────────────────────────────────
