Beautiful Day For a Run

It was a few days after Sage’s arrival at Hogwarts and there was one thing that she really missed: running. Everyday she thought of how happy she felt when running. The idea of Kora at her side, wide blowing in her face, her right leg aching from long distances. Sage had made up her mind to head out for a quick run around the grounds. She changed into running clothes, a pair of black shorts and grey tank top, in her dorm with the plan to change out of them after her run. She had brought her running blade with her, leaving her regular leg inside. Her running leg had a black part that she slipped her residual limb into. Instead of a foot, there was a curved blade. That was what she had to run on. It was hard at first for Sage to figure out how to run with the blade. The feeling was odd but she adjusted quickly. Sage used to run everyday back home. Now that her schedule was more difficult at Hogwarts, she had evened it down to a few days for about ten minutes. Sage tied her hair into a quick ponytail to keep out of her face as she ran. Sage got outside and began to stretch. Cassie had always told her that stretching before her runs was important so she did not hurt herself. Sage checked that her right shoe was tied tightly before standing to begin her run.

One of my favorite things to do in the morning was take a walk. That and listen to music. Well, technically, I also liked to write and read. It was a great way to start the morning. But today was the day that I would take a walk around the campus.
Before I had left for Hogwarts, my mom had given me a miniature enchanted radio. This radio could play music from any Wizarding band, including some Muggle ones as well. I used this practically every morning. Well technically it had only been a few mornings. But it would probably be other than my wand and my clothes, the most used object that I had brought from home. It was one of my favorite things in the entire world.
This wonderful morning I was listening to a song and going for a walk. This walk could be considered a run since I was walking quite fast. I liked to speed walk as it got you to places faster than just walking normally.
I assumed that the place would be quiet because not many people went out for runs or walks in the morning before breakfast. But I did. It seemed as if my assumption wasn't exactly true. This was because there was a girl with brown hair, tied in a ponytail going for a run.
Wow! Another person like me! I decided that I would talk to her. I needed to make new friends anyways. Maybe this girl could help me get the patience to run every day and maybe we could be waking or running buddies.
That is if she even talks to me. Which meant I needed to talk to her right now, because she was going to pass me soon enough. She was a Hufflepuff from what I could tell. I sped up my pace, so that I could catch up to her as she had passed me by now.
"Hey!" I called out. "What's your name? My name is Reyna Evergreen. First year Hufflepuff. Do you normally go for a run this early in the morning?"
I wondered what she would say. Would she keep on running? Or would she stop to talk to me? Maybe we would be friends. I very much hoped so.

@Reyna EvergreenSage was surprised to see another girl running by her. Sage glanced over her. She had some sort of radio in her hand.
“Reyna. My name is Sage. I’m also in Hufflepuff. Nice to meet you,” said Sage. Sage continued to run for a bit, huffing and puffing as she went. After a few beats of silence, Sage slowly moved to a stop and turned to the girl.
“Do you normally run in the mornings? I do not think I have seen you around before, then again, this is my first time running in the mornings here at Hogwarts,” said Sage. Sage adjusted her ponytail before moving back into a light jog. Sage was not used to running alongside others, besides her sister Kora, so this event was a bit odd for her. Do you… talk to people while you run? Or does that tire you out more easily, trying to focus on conversation? thought Sage. She pushed herself to go a bit faster. She was beginning to feel a bit thirsty. Now, normally, Cassie would be back waiting at their home with a glass of water ready for her. Except, this wasn’t home. Sure the people were nice, well, most of them, but they weren’t Cassie and Kora. They weren’t familiar. At least she had running.

I learnt that the girl who was also a Hufflepuff was named Sage. She asked me a few questions about me after introducing herself. I answered them one by one. The first was if I usually ran in the morning. "Normally I do run in the morning because it's nice weather, and it is quiet. It's a nice thinking time where I brainstorm ideas for my stories normally." It was a beautiful day for a run today and although I hadn't ran many times in Hogwarts, I was starting to enjoy it. "By the way, I hope this doesn’t sound rude but what is on your leg? I've never seen it before. It looks cool though. Did something happen to your leg?" I questioned. For some reason running brought out the curiosity in me, and I became curious asking questions that I would never ask before. Maybe it gave me strength or something the strength to ask questions. But I was curious. I could tell that Sage wanted water so I led her towards a place where you could fill and drink water. How do you talk while you run? Doesn't it make you more tired? I shrugged. I would figure it out one way or another and maybe I would make a new friend along the way. |

Sage continued panting and jogging along. She normally didn’t run this slow and talk to anyone while she ran. Reyna explained her running in the morning and how that was when she came up with story ideas.
“Oh, do you like to write? That’s cool!” commented Sage. Then Reyna asked the question that always made Sage mad. Sage completely stopped running and froze. She looked back at Reyna and hesitated to tel her. Reyna did seem like a nice girl and she was probably just naturally curious, as a lot of people had been. Sage made up her mind that Reyna was someone she trusted enough to tell.
“Oh, this is my prosthetic running blade. I lost my leg in a car crash when I was two,” whispered Sage. Bits of her hair fell into her face as she stared at the ground. Sage wasn’t ashamed of her leg, she never had been. But the question always seemed to remind Sage that she was different. She hadn’t started to run again and instead picked at a bit of dry skin on her hands. Reyna led her to a place with water that they could drink. Sage drank the water greedily, thankful for the hydration. Sometimes back home, Sage would carry a bottle of water with her, but she hadn’t thought to do that here. Sage finished with her water and pointed behind her before saying, “Do you want to keep running? Or do you want to turn back?”

Sage commented on me liking to write. I smiled. It wasn't common to like to write but it wasn't uncommon either. I was glad someone appreciated my writing. Then Sage stopped running. Uh oh, was it a bad idea to ask what was on her leg? I was curious but sometimes my curiosity led to bad things happening. I had ruined friendships because of that. I crossed my fingers that that wouldn't happen here. She eventually did tell me and I let out a small sigh of relief. The two of us stopped running and instead stopped to drink water. I could tell Sage was thirsty so that's why I led her here. "I'm sorry. I was just curious and I know it probably makes you mad when people ask you that question. I didn't stop to think when I asked that. Sorry." I said apologizing hoping that would smooth out the rough patches. Sage then asked if I wanted to keep running. "Up to you," I replied, "If you're up to it then yes, otherwise no." I smiled at her. I personally hoped to continue running because then a friendship could bloom. Hopefully. If I hadn't messed it up like I had done to others that was. |

Sage couldn’t help but notice Reyna’s smile at her comment about the writing. Maybe not that many people thought it was cool. After the girls both stopped for water, Reyna apologized to Sage for asking about her leg.
“Really, it’s okay. I’m honestly a bit glad you asked. Sometimes people just assume things about it and they never take the time to ask and get to know me as a person,” Sage explained. Most of that sentence was true, Sage did appreciate it when people asked honest questions about her to learn who she was, but at the same time, people not asking made her feel more like it didn’t bother them. Like they could accept this was just who she was. Reyna said she was fine with turning back or continuing to run. Sage felt a sitch working its way into her side and a cramp creeping up her leg.
“I may turn back. My leg is starting to cramp and my sides are starting to hurt. I don’t want to run too much and overwork myself!” Sage said. She felt guilty almost, to be turning back so soon.
“Maybe we could go for another run later?” Sage offered, hopeful to get to run with a friend sometime soon again. Sage started to walk back towards the castle, careful not to run and irritate the cramp in her leg.

I sighed, glad that our friendship could continue. I was glad that Sage was okay with me asking about her leg, I had hoped that I hadn't messed up. I was a tad bit out of breath from running since I had not gone on a run in a long time. Over the course of the summer, I had done lots of things but not that much running. So I was out of practice. Maybe it was best to start easy for today so maybe I should turn back? Sage said that she might want to turn back so I nodded my head. That had been what I was thinking as well. "That's ok! Whatever you're comfortable with!!" I smiled as she said that we could go on a another run. That was a great idea. "How about making a tradition, like every day or like once a week? Up to you!" I replied. We began to walk back to the castle enjoying the view and our time together. I really enjoyed this and hoped that she would run with me a few times a week. A friend to run with would be very fun. We both had the same hobbies and the love of the morning. So it would surely be great to run together. |

Reyna smiled at Sage, and she followed suit. It was nice to have someone to run with, she thought. For someone who loved the quiet, Sage was growing to love the idea of company. Reyna was proving to be a great friend, and Sage was glad she hadn’t
The sound of their short, labored breaths and their feet slapping against the ground filled Sage’s ears. It was a rhythm, a pattern of movement from the running. Sage jogged a bit further until she was wiped out. She slowed to a walk as Reyna suggested making their running a tradition.
“I love that idea!” Sage agreed. “I could find you at some point during the day and we could do a warmup or something as well maybe?” She was eager to continue their enjoyable time running in the future, and she was sure it would turn out to be a great friendship.
She slowed down even more. “Hey, I think I’m going to turn back. I’ve got a cramp in my leg, and I’m exhausted. Maybe we could find each other at a meal sometime?” She paused to wait for Reyna’s reply.
She wiped the sweat off her forehead and smiled, pointing at the castle. “It was great meeting you, Reyna! Let me know next time you want to head out for a run, and I’ll be there!”

I felt at peace with Sage, it wasn't a normal feeling but I loved it. Maybe it was the running, or maybe it was the fact that I was with a friend or maybe both? I wasn't sure. As we continued running, our time began to come to an end. We both slowed ourselves down to a run as we both seemed a bit tired. Sage agreed with my idea to run together more often. I smiled at that. "Okay! Whenever either of us feels like it we can find each other! We are in the same house after all!" I giggled, feeling happy she agreed. I knew that this was going to turn into something great. Sage said that she had a cramp in her leg. "Oh of course, yes we should go back! And I would love to one day find each other to talk! It was great talking to you!" We both began to walk towards the castle. As we approached, I waved to her and said, "It was also nice to meet you as well! I hope we can run together more!!" Then we both left to go our separate ways. I really did enjoy running with her. It made me feel happy and I really hoped I would see her and get to that again with her some other time. |
