Summer Camp - Gnome Racing
Introductory Gnome Racing
Welcome to Summer Camp! This year, we have the opportunity to create our own enchanted Garden Gnomes. Students can come to a workshop during the first week to assemble the object, and a professor will then enchant it for racing. We have all the parts you need provided, and a modular system to try to make the best racer. Throughout the summer camp month, we will be racing these to see who made the best gnome.
All are welcome to participate! Fill out the forms below before the start of the races if you wish to be included.
The top 3 gnomes for overall racing course placement (average ranking over all courses) will earn their creators an additional prize. Ten Galleons to 1st, five to 2nd, and three to 3rd.
OOC Dates:
Sign-ups Open: July 2nd
Sign-ups Close: July 16th
Races Begin: July 17th
Races End: August 1stIC Dates
Gnome Workshops: July 1st through July 15th
Gnome Races: July 17th
One hour IC time per race, one day activity, but evening/afternoons free. The Rules
For each course (see courses below), the gnomes will race for the best finishing time. They will have a mix of obstacles and traps depending on the course to overcome. Each one is based one of the three stats you assign your gnome: Strength, Endurance, Wit.
Strength will help the gnome overcome obstacles and even break out of some traps. It also makes them a better fighter if they make it to the top 10 Thunderdome match. Both traps and obstacles will test strength.
Endurance is how much damage the Gnome can take before it stops working and how tough its shell is overall. This helps the gnome survive being hit my multiple traps and to break through some traps or obstacles unharmed. Both traps and obstacles will test endurance.
Wit will be for basic problem-solving. Can they figure out a maze easier, can they see the obvious trap ahead in their path, and can they see a way around an obstacle easier? Both traps and obstacles will test wit.
Dice will be rolled to determine the gnome's success at each step. A d20 will be rolled for each trap or obstacle your gnome will encounter. Each of these encounters will have a type associated with them (Strength, Endurance, or Wit). The gnome's stats will be added to this roll to determine pass/fail.
Obstacles have a DC of 10. Meaning the d20 plus relevant gnome stat must equal or beat 10. For example, if your gnome has 5 wit and a wit trap appears, a d20 is rolled and 5 is added to that roll.
Traps have a DC of 15. Meaning the d20 plus relevant gnome stat must equal or beat 15. For example, if your gnome has 5 wit and a wit trap appears, a d20 is rolled and 5 is added to that roll. In addition to being slowed by the trap, the gnome will lose 1 endurance point (for the rest of this course only).
Rolling a 1 on the d20 is always a fail, no matter the gnome stats otherwise.
Additional Important Notes
- 100 second base time
- +5 seconds per failed obstacle
- +10 seconds per failed trap
- -1 Endurance per failed trap
- Gnomes with 0 Endurance deactivate
- Deactivated Gnomes share last place
- Deactivated Gnomes are restored next course
- Courses have on average 10-20 obstacles/traps
The CoursesNote: The Thunderdome is the top 10 Gnomes only, and will be a Strength vs Strength roll to damage endurance. Random matches each round.
- The speedway - A straight line with a few enhanced bricks that pop up as obstacles randomly.
- Bookshelf Boulevard - A series of old books and shelving will be set up to create what looks like a mini parkour challenge. Mix of obstacles and traps of all kinds.
- Mousetrap Mayhem - This course focuses on traps of all kind that can end or slow down a run for each gnome.
- Mini Maze Mayhem - As it sounds, this is a cute maze made of tiny hedges. No traps here, just wit obstacles at every step.
- The Thunderdome - A large metal cage. 10 gnomes enter, 1 gnome exits. Then later, 9 other gnomes exit.
How To Participate
Students can each register a gnome for the racing events. You must register before the races begin. You will have 2 weeks to register before the events begin. Furthermore, you must fill out the following form in a reply to this post.
Each gnome gets 15 points for stats. The max in one stat is 10.
*You must put at least 1 point in every stat.Your Name:

Each course will run for one week OOC, one hour IC. There will be a spectator thread and a race thread. You must RP as placing your gnome on the course and being ready for the event. Then you will have a chance (but not required) to react to each step as moderators post progress of the race. Chunks of the race will be posted every 1-2 days until the end of the week, when the race ends. Spectators may cheer on, discuss, etc. at will as they watch the course. Just keep in mind it's an IC time of about an hour for each race.
Betting
Outside of this, there will also be a betting pool. You do not need to have a gnome to bet. You can bet on ANY gnome in the upcoming race. An OOC thread will be posted with a form to fill for each race. There will be a max and a minimum bet for each race. Payout is split among winners based on ratio of bets.
For example, if a total of 1000 Knuts are bet on a race, and 100 of those knuts are bet on the winner, then for every knut bet on the winning gnome, the bet placers will get 10 times their bet as reward (1000 total / 100 on winner). If Player_1 bets 20 of those Knuts, they get paid 200. If Player_2 bets 35 knuts, they get paid 350. If no one bets on the winning gnome, all knuts are returned without penalty nor gain.
Bets open during the week before a race. The thread will lock and bets will be locked in once the race begins. You MUST post in the betting thread and send your bet to the bet moderator for your bet to count. If you're a first year unable to send money, buy and send potato peelings. They are 1 knut each and can substitute for money.
OOC this has been allowed by the staff, but IC if you choose to RP the bets, it's a secret student-run bookkeeper and isn't known to professors.
