November had come, and the sky was a curtain of mist. However, the season had not given way to winter just yet. Not too far behind the greenhouses, somewhere in the fields between the lake and the forbidden forests but not quite close to either of them, colorful flowers picked through the bloom, nodding on stalks or nestled in bushes.

It had only been so many years since the battle of Hogwarts saw the Greenhouse's panes broken, and in the time between its shattering and its restoration, many of the plants within had scattered seeds. Wild moly and yarrow stuck their heads up in yellow bursts, and chrysanthemums in red and yellow and orange swayed in waves of sparking fire, blazing a mirror beneath the turning leaves of a few wind-bowed trees. A few thorny roses rambled along through the taller stalks of grass, and purple stock and delphinium grew here, too, speckled by occasional clumps of brilliant iris.

The boy could be found among these, humming, the smoldering-tinder smell of his robes mixing in with that of far-away burning leaves. He was working his way diligently through the irises, hand hovering over each discerningly to pick this one or that, and slowly, a bouquet was beginning to form in his hand, which he'd pause to secure in a bit of pinched-together purple ribbon. Pausing as he considered a rather dwarfish red lily, he tilted his head, pressed his lips together, then shrugged as he snipped it away, stuck it between one ear with a tittering chuckle.

His little secret. No one need know.

He had not, after all, seen anyone in this particular patch of grounds for some time, and the curve of a hill not too far from here concealed a lot of this from direct view of the castle. It wasn't a bad spot to find cheap potions ingredients, if he needed them - he paused to dig a somewhat withered allium up by the roots, stuffing it into his bag - and he couldn't help but preen a little at his own cleverness to have found it before the others.

This was the hubris of a firstie; first year, and first crush. He had not been the first to pick bouquets among these flowers, and he would not be the last.

[quote][font=bodoni monotype] It was nearing December, the first month of Winter. The Scottish skies were getting cloudier everyday and there were barely leaves on the trees. Usually, on bitter cold mornings like these, Aurelia would be reluctant to even step foot outside of the warm castle. However, for the sake of her grades, she had to take the trip to the greenhouse in attempts to query about one of her Herbology assignments.

The subject on plants was never her strongest suit neither did she like the lessons memorising the different kinds of weeds. On rare occasions, she got to learn a spell or two from the lessons. Regardless wether she disliked it or not, she had to complete the assignment by the end of the week and hope for the best. If the assignment wasn’t so complex, Aurelia would be in the common room enjoying the warmth while working on one of her Gryffgazette articles or scouting for the latest gossips to put in the paper. Aurelia had to admit that the Gryffgazette took the majority of her time than other things like homework.

As Aurelia was walking down the grounds using the route she always took, the one that she heard a few older years saying that wasn’t as muddy, not to far away was a student standing in the middle of a patch of grass that had not turned brown like the others in preparation to the coming winter. Curious she was, especially noticing there were flowers around the student, Aurelia approached her. Assuming it was a her, she/he had quite long hair for a boy but boys could have long hair too as there weren’t any places in Hogwarts where people could go to cut their hair. Most just use the diffindo spell. Aurelia couldn’t tell the student’s gender from the distance. Since he/she had quite feminine features.

The ground became a bit softer and muddy as she closed the gap between the student and her. As she got closer, she then realised it was a boy. He was much shorter than her. A smirk formed on the Brunette’s face as she spotted a small bouquet of colourful flowers in his hand. That only meant one thing, he was going to give it to a girl he liked. The thought about it was cute and it wouldn’t hurt to have one more addition to her relationship section in her gossip article.

It was quite odd when the boy tucked one of the many flowers on his ear, she though that only girl did that. Aurelia herself didn’t fancy decorating her eat with flowers. Even then, Aurelia had seen many odd people in Hogwarts so he wasn’t the first. “So, who is the lucky person you are going to give the bouquet to?” Aurelia asked loud enough, stating her presence.

Absorbed in the swirl of petals and stalks, Aurelia's pleasant voice cut through the petals like lightning, and the boy jumped, a few stalks of some weedy, bristle-brushy looking thing floating to the grass. Orienting as he twisted to face her, his large, sharp green eyes washed over her like the quick flutter of wings. Then he settled, a soft, wry smile creeping onto his features as he regarded her in recomposure.

"Bold of you to assume they'd be lucky," he joked, smiling. "But November Morsus, with any luck. Merlin knows he could use a bit of color and cheer, acts as if every kind thing that's ever been given to him was snatched away the next instant," he sighed, looking at her more carefully now as he free hand rose to smooth his hair, tucking it neatly into place. Thin, delicate fingers lingered near the flower for a second, debating pulling it out or leaving it in; but then he pushed it a bit more firmly into place, like a pencil behind an accountant's ear.

Turning fully, he took a few steps closer as he tucked the bouquet into the crook of his arm, a genial smile aimed up at her. She seemed friendly enough, this tall, strong-looking girl, but there was something of the Old Families in her voice, and it simultaneously made him feel at home and want to be formal. "You know, I think I've seen you around Gryffindor tower before, but I don't believe we've ever properly met. Rainier Green, at your service," he rocked onto his heels, bowed his head in a quick nod. "Don't suppose you came out here looking for these, did you? Something to brighten up your robes?" he asked, holding up a bright red chrysanthemum appraisingly, imagining it in her front pocket. "I can't tell you all their names, but at least I knew which are poisonous... well, a few."

The boy was clearly taken by surprise when Aurelia spoke, he stumbled a bit but regained his balance. The girl sometimes had a tendency to blurt out laughing at others’ misfortunes like these and therefore pressed her two lips together in order to refrain from doing so. It would be somewhat bad of her if she did but it was just in her nature.

November Morsus, was a name she had never heard before. The boy proceeded to state that November was a he, strange, bouquets of flowers were mostly given to girls, at least Aurelia has never seen a guy giving another a flower as a gift. It wasn’t usual either, but it was still possible as flowers were common get-well-soon gifts for the hospitalised.

The flowers weren’t for a special girl, there didn’t seem like she’d be getting any juicy information from the boy to add on to one of her Gryffgazette articles now. Therefore, there wasn’t much of point in lingering any further in these patch of flowers or with this strange boy.

You and November must be really good friends, I hope that he’d be a bit more appreciative this time.” Aurelia added, not requiring any more information but just as she was about to turn around in the direction of the greenhouse, her attention was drawn back when the boy spoke again. Aurelia raised an eyebrow when she noticed that the formality in his tone sounded a bit forced and unnatural when he introduced himself especially the part where he nodded his head in a small bow.

Though odd, he remained friendly and it was polite for her to introduce herself, it was what she was taught since young. It was a way to become more known across the society, in this case was Hogwarts, as well as get everyone to know which family you belong in.

Aurelia Bezuidenhout,” the girl’s long last name slipped naturally from her lips.

The girl shook her head when Rainer asked if came to pick flowers, “Not really, I was heading for the green house when I saw you down here,”

But when I come to think of it, I do need to stock up on valerian stalks for potion brewing,” Aurelia said tapping on her chin subconsciously. She had been brewing vials of forgetfulness potion one after another until the other day that she noticed that she had only a few stalks of valerian left, barely enough for two more brews. With every week that passed her consumption of the potion was noticeably increasing, it was likely due to her own body becoming more tolerable with every dose, much like sleeping pills on muggles.

Aurelia hadn’t many things in her schedule after her visit to the Herbology classroom, besides dinner, so it wouldn’t hurt to have a little chat. “Any chance any of hear flowers a Valerian? You seemed to be fond of Flowers. How do you know so much about plants anyways?” Aurelia asked.

Green huffed, rolling his eyes at the thought. "Don't I wish that was the problem. No, it isn't that he's not appreciative enough - it's that he's all too appreciative. It makes him nervous, teary, even. I'm hoping to get him used to it gradually; don't want him breaking out into tears in the corridor when I ask him to the ball later on," he muttered, shaking his head.

His eyebrows lifted when she mentioned her herbological needs. "Valerian, hmm? Having trouble sleeping?" he asked, though the question seemed more rhetorical than a direct inquiry. "I did see one or two, but if you're going for the stalks, you might be a bit late," he murmured, though he turned away, a shadow passing over his eyes briefly. The fact was, Valerian was expensive, and it could take years to grow to the proper size. If he showed her where he was getting his, there'd be less for him to send home. Perhaps permanently.

He sucked on his lip, considering how to approach the issue. Well, she had asked anyway... "I just know what I need to to help my father's shop out. We stock ingredients, finished products, a bit of everything - Green's Alchemical Elixers in Knockturn Alley, if you're familiar?" he shrugged. "He often sends me out to fetch this or that, so it pays to know my plants. Speaking of, if you want your potions to be effective, it sounds like you'd need some fresh sprigs. Ours are specially tended, fresh all year, so they should be what you need. If I ask him to send you a free sample tonight, you'd have it as early as tomorrow," he suggested, watching the girl's eyes carefully.

Rainer was taking November to the ball? Most balls, the guys would take girls, rarely would there be a girl inviting the other gender. Rainer asking November to the ball was something unusual. Perhaps he meant to convince November to attend the ball? Perhaps. But Rainer staying that November became teary eyed upon reviving gifts caused Aurelia’s eyebrow to raise. Truelly was there such a case of a guy crying of a mere gift or was Rainer over exaggerating?

Rainer need not know the purpose of the Valerian. No matter how friendly he seemed, she couldn’t risk more people knowing about her secret. Valerian was used to promote sleep as well, if Aurelia had more than enough, she’d definitely use the plant for that purpose, she sometimes had trouble sleeping too, but that wasn’t the case, she had barely enough to brew a vial of potion.

Smile formed on her lips when Rainer introduced his Father’s shop. “That’s perfect. Is it alright if your Father sends me a bunch or two every month. You need not give me a sample, I know why I need. I can pay for it and the delivery fees as well. ” Aurelia said enthusiastically. It was ridiculous that second years weren’t allowed outside Hogwarts. Aurelia always had trouble getting the ingredients. Usually, she had to buy them at overpriced rates from older years, which that she wasn’t very happy about. Now that Rainer had told her about his Father’s shop, life would seem to be much easier since Aurelia had a busy schedule barely could squeeze in time to make transactions with older years without sacrificing her sleep.

Green's eyebrows jumped as if burnt on the stove as Aurelia turned down the free sample, immediately offering him the kind of order he had never before managed to secure for their struggling shop. A monthly order, and shipping fees? She had this kind of money on a regular basis? For a moment, he wondered if he shouldn't write back and encourage his father to raise their rate a little, but as he studied her, he decided against it. No, she seemed too shrewd - too familiar and comfortable with this sort of deal. Or at least, that was what she projected...

"Excellent!" he said, smiling back at her. "He'll be delighted. Let me just write this up," he clicked his tongue, pulling a parchment and quill from his rucksack. "So, that'll be one delivery of a bundle of the standard 18 sprigs every two weeks this month, at 8 sickles and 2 knuts for a bundle, one sickle for each delivery..." His quill flew as he jotted down the numbers, did some quick calculations. "So, 1 galleon, 1 sickle and 4 knuts for the month," he suggested, handing her the paper and quill to sign, "And if I don't hear from you, I'll assume all went well and renew the order for next month. Sound fair?" he asked, studying her closely. The wind howled through the grass, making quill and parchment flutter in his hands.

Aurelia smiled when Rainer took out a quill and parchment and began listing the conditions for the deal. Finally, she could say goodbye to the ridiculous prices those older years gave her. 8 galleons was very reasonable, it was officially the first business deal she made with someone in Hogwarts.

The Girl took the quill and signed swiftly. She never knew that she would secure such a deal when she approached this strange boy. But by the stroke of luck, she had. Aurelia felt that she had to return something in return since he had basically, indirectly saved her tons of galleons.

She passed the contract back to the boy. “Yes it does sound fair, ” She said.

Rainer had told her that he was going to take a Friend to the ball. Aurelia had tons of friends and perhaps she might introduce her to a few girl, that would be a favour in return wouldn’t it? Or so she thought. “Both you and November can’t find a date to bring to a ball?” she asked. “I might have a few friends I know who are looking for people to go to the ball with.” the girl started and waited for the boy’s response.

Not to worry, I like a relaxed pace, and you've got a billion threads to juggle. Not to mention, I go a bit slower myself.

"Excellent," Green grinned as he took the paper back with delicate fingers, rolling it up gingerly and tying the little scroll with a bit of twine. He clicked his tongue in satisfaction as he slipped it into his inner breast pocket, murmuring, "That should be back in London by sundown..."

His eyes flicked back to her with an inward twitch of his brows at her offer, however. A girl who needed a date? He supposed he could make use of one of those, distasteful though the thought of being set up was. His father would certainly be pleased, if she was the right sort. But then it registered - a few friends, both you and November can't - and his eyes slowly widened, sucking in a breath as his jaw tightened.

November and the girl, giggling nervously as they first met. November and the girl, shyly whispering to one another, exchanging flowers, glances, more. November and the girl, holding hands as they walked in, him in a suit with tails, her in a floating gown of ethereal white chiffon. His hand on her waist as they began slow dancing. The two leaning in, noses brushing, lips-

"No," he said suddenly, and the flowers in his hands nearly wheezed as his grip strangled the stems. He let out a breath, forcing himself to relax. "How - how very kind of you," he said gently, lips smiling, eyes sharp. "But to clarify: I intend to ask November to the ball as my date," he said slowly, some semblance of warmth slowly returning to his eyes, shoulders untensing. "An, ah... understandable mistake," he laughed quietly, smiling in a manner which was decidedly more friendly than a moment ago, "And I am, of course, always delighted to meet people. But I do want to make my romantic intentions clear," he said, standing as tall as he could at his diminutive size.

His jaw worked quietly, and it occurred to him that this was the first time he had ever admitted his orientation.

And he was frightened.
