And just like that, Gryffindor was leading and Matt allowed himself a moment to hope. After their crushing defeat against Ravenclaw, to have an early lead on Slytherin was quite a different feeling.
He looked down the bench to the others sat there, beaming before returning his attention to the game up in the air. This was a good feeling.

For a change Finnegan was happy to be watching from the sidelines. It was a thrilling game with neither side holding any kind of insurmountable lead over the other. That meant they stood a chance, a real chance because on paper they should have been beat by now. Finnegan was glad to see Zoe make a few saves. She hadn't had as much success in the last few games and he'd felt a bit bad for her, because he knew it hadn't been for lack of trying.

It was a fight, tooth and nail, for the precious Quaffle points. Loyal Chasers from both teams would dutifully dive for the leather ball, anyone’s success. While Slytherin’s hoops were unguarded, allowing Haley to add another 10 points to the scoreboard, Gryffindor’s Zoe would not be as easy to get past. Feats of strength abounded as Chasers wrestled for their prize and sent it hurtling towards the goals, but Zoe would not be left in the dust. In just as admirable an achievement, she would shut out all but one score attempt this round, allowing Maggie the satisfaction of racking up another 10 points for Slytherin.

It was nothing short of brutality from the Beaters. They would attack once, twice, even three times in mere seconds. Erin sent a scorching bludger towards her Gryffindor counterpart, Ethan, who would’ve needed nothing short of a divine miracle to avoid the attack. Although the Slytherin sacrificed power for accuracy, she didn’t need either one to send Ethan tumbling from his broom towards the pitch below. The bludger bounced off of her target and went screaming towards a second Lion, their Seeker. Elena was not built for strength but for elusion, and she needed all she could get to sneak out of the way of Erin’s bloodthirst. Yet all she had would still not be quite enough. The iron ball just grazed her as she twisted away, but it would still be powerful enough to cause her to lose her grip and slip off her broom.

Ethan, however, was not going down without a fight. He took great care aiming for his target-- or, targets, as it would be. Cash and Dan were about to be on the receiving end of a nasty bludger. It was their luck that they would eke just enough out of the way to avoid being slammed, but they would still be jostled by the force of the ball. Proud and strong, though, they held on with all their might.

Ethan’s bludger would ricochet straight and true towards a second target, Erin, but the irresistible part-Veela had a few tricks up her sleeve. Her natural beauty would be too much for Ethan to bear, and at the last moment, he would set his sights on someone, anyone else instead-- even his own teammate. The bludger flew even straighter and truer towards Gryffindor’s star Keeper, Zoe. The girl, likely not at all expecting to be targeted and otherwise busy doing an incredible job playing her position, wouldn’t stand a chance against her teammate’s attack. But however unexpected, Zoe would hang tight to her broom, and she would live to guard the hoops another round.

Meanwhile, Pax was helping their teammate double-down on a certain two-for-one target: Cash and Dan. But Pax’s attack would not show quite the pinpoint accuracy of his teammate’s, and the Slytherin duo would easily dodge, not to be unseated so easily.

Erin, however, was not done. How many tricks did this girl have up her sleeve?? She would catch Pax’s bludger as it whizzed past Cash and Dan, and send it searing towards yet another poor Gryffindor-- this time, at full strength. With Erin pulling no punches, poor Hannah didn’t stand a chance. With the Gryffindor entering the fray only to heroically attempt to pull Elena from freefall and onto her broom, the Lion would instead take the full force of the attack from the feared Slytherin Beater. Very few students could withstand the force of a bludger from Erin Ryan, and Hannah was not one of them. Likely winded, in great pain, and with a couple bruised or broken ribs, Hannah would be sent flying from her broom with no hope of recovery. Three Gryffindors down, eight to go.

But as she was sent tumbling from her broom at the hands of the Slytherin Beaters, she wouldn’t be able to catch even a sparkle of gold in the clear blue sky as she braced for impact with the unforgiving grass below. Dan, however, would have much more luck. Eyes glued to the prize, he wouldn't waste a moment diving after the game-winning Snitch, and his efforts would prove fruitful as he would claim the golden sphere as his own.

The game was getting heated quickly, and alongside it was Pax's temper. They tried to calm down, keep it cool, keep focused, but it was never easy. And it was definitely messing with their head, making them miss the next bludger they hit. This season hadn't gone to plan, and that was easily getting on their nerves.
