Ellara slipped into the Girl's Lavatory, silently scolding herself for how stupid she'd just been in her very first Charms Class! She'd done the preparation, the class notes, the homework, and all that jazz, but there were just some concepts she didn't understand, no matter how much she tried. Maybe she wasn't fit out to be at a magical school like this one. She should just owl her dad - Nope! Can't even send a text, owl -  him and go back home. Everything in Manchester seemed so simple, but then again, even if she did go back, it would never be the same as before.

Sniffling slightly, Ellara tried to take a calming breath, and glanced over at her reflection in the mirror, attempting to smooth out the slightly puffy skin and redness rimming her eyes. Sure signs she'd been crying. She could only pray that no one else noticed the occurrence.  Taking another steadying breath, she looked at herself and attempted a smile, knowing that as long as she faked it, she'd make it. "I can do this," she murmured unconvincingly. Her mum had always told her to pretend like she knew what she was doing, even if she didn't, and right now, that advice was just about the only thing she had to work with.

Ell glanced up from her position next to the mirror as the lavatory door opened, and a pair of footsteps entered the space. Hopefully, whoever it was, wouldn't pay her too much attention. She just needed a chance to try to get her thoughts back together.

[quote][font=bodoni monotype] It was barely 3pm in the afternoon and Aurelia felt tired. There was that bothering feeling of heaviness in her eyes. Having an absurd amount of about five to six hours of shut eye the night before, it was expected she felt that way. Sleep was something Aurelia was deprived off as soon as she returned to Hogwarts after the summer break. Perhaps it was a mistake to have taken three articles for the Gryffgazette. Whatever it was, she had a reputation to uphold and that was bringing in the best gossips into the paper.

Thankfully, the previous class was the last of the day. Even though tired, her posture and the way she carried herself was not affected as she took poised strides into the girl’s bathroom. The heels of her shoe clicked noisily against the hard floor of the lavatory as she approached the sink right next to another red headed girl. Aurelia leaned towards the mirror as she examined her terrible complexion, there were dark circles under her eyes from the obvious lack of sleep and due to winter approaching and the sky increasingly populated with clouds, her skin seemed like it was getting paler each day.

The brunette usually reserved her make up for special occasions and events, but due to the hideous purple shade that settled under her eyes, she pulled out her concealer from her black pouch. Aurelia let out a light but exasperated sigh as soon as the ugly purple shade was layered with the matching colour of her skin. The tap faucet squeaked as water spurted out and she began rubbing the beige colour from her fingertips which she had used to rub the makeup in.

Aurelia could help but notice that the girl with blazing red hair was still there. The girl hadn’t been washing her hands but was just looking into the mirror the whole time. Aurelia felt a tinge of guit when she noticed that the girl’s eyes were all red and puffy most likely due to the fact that she was crying. Light sniffs also supported as evidence that she had been crying.

It wasn’t the first time that Aurelia had experience another girl crying in the girl’s lavatory and it wasn’t much of a surprise that they chose the place to grieve. It was a place that wasn’t crowded like the other corners in Hogwarts. The last time was during her first year when she met a girl named Violet and advice was something she had appreciated. Aurelia wasn’t a type of person who would provide comfort to another fellow girl. However, it wouldn’t hurt to give a bit of advice since she didn’t have any classes left for her to attend to.

So, what’s the cause of your distress?” Aurelia was straightforward in her question.

Ellara immediately turned away from the entryway, as a pair of footsteps entered the room, hoping she could just willingly disappear at that moment. The Hufflepuff girl wasn't usually one to shy away from social interaction, but when you were standing in the middle of a creepy old bathroom that was definitely haunted in some way, shape, or form, and pathetically crying, how could you really face anyone head on?

Ellara, sadly, wasn't a girl that quite often went unnoticed. With her striking hair and porcelain features, it was only all too obvious from the redenning of her cheeks and puffiness of her eyes when she'd been crying. The Butler family had always been a proud one, and when she was little, and throughout all of her elementary years, Ellara had never cried at school once. Not even when she'd busted open her knee in a game of football out on the recess pitch, or when she'd gotten that failing grade in Year 3 for accidentally skipping a page of a test she would have otherwise aced. Not even when she'd found out her mum had died.

No, this was a new experience all and around, but perhaps there was a fitting explanation to it. After all, it had only been months earlier when she'd discovered she was a witch and left everything she'd ever believed to be true behind to get shipped off to some random castle in an undisclosed location in Scotland. Maybe with all of the change in her life, Ellara was becoming a new person, as well. What scared her, even more, is that she wasn't sure if she liked that new person.

The pair of footsteps stopped in front of the mirror next to her, and she finally tilted her head to the left, regarding the girl who had just entered. She definitely looked older, and Ellara immediately deemed that she was probably a Second Year from her evident height and more matured looks. The eleven-year-old Hufflepuff had never thought of wearing concealer, let alone any makeup for that matter, to school before, but from the worn-out expression the girl wore on her face, she'd probably be needing it soon enough. For now, she'd just have to hope no one noticed that she'd been crying.

Ellara was caught off guard as the girl finally verbally acknowledged her, asking what her cause of distress was. Huh, that, although it was a great question, wasn't really one she necessarily had an answer to. What wascausing her distress? Knowing that if she continued to verbally assess the question in her mind, she'd never get around to actually answering, she decided to let her voice speak for itself.

She offered the girl an apologetic smile, almost as if she was embarrassed that this Gryffindor, who evidently looked like she had better things to do, would even bother to stop for a moment to listen to her drama. "It was just a rough day of Charms. I showed up late and made a total fool of myself, and I could just see the professor's disappointment. I tried really hard... but I honestly just don't think I belong here."

Was that really what she was feeling? Ellara guessed it sounded about right. When she finished speaking, she bit her lip and regarded the Gryffindor girl, waiting to see her reaction.

[quote][font=bodoni monotype] The girl probably had exaggerated the experience with the professor being disappointed. Charms class was taught by Professor Seaborne and she was one of the more of the rarer friendly ones in the school from what Aurelia had heard. Aurelia doubt that the professor had been too harsh on the Hufflepuff.

No matter how nice a professor was, tardiness wasn’t something anybody appreciated and that might have been the reason why she felt that way. It was already two months into the new school year, most first years would have already learnt to navigate their way through the confusing corridors of the Scottish castle so it gave the Hufflepuff no excuse for being late.

Whatever the case, Aurelia had seen a few students embarrass themselves in Charms class especially when Ackerley Blackburn was teaching it. In every class, or by far almost everywhere, the French professor would bring along his pet. However, his pet wasn’t an ordinary one like a dog or cat Nor was it magical. Ackerley Blackburn of all people had a tarantula as a pet.

Spiders weren’t something Aurelia feared but for many other students, it was the scariest thing ever. There was an occasion when the eight legged creature decided to jump on an unfortunate boy’s face while he was demonstrating the lumos charm in front of the class. Who knew that Reid Kovacs had such a high-pitched scream? Aurelia had never known that she could laugh has hard as she did until that day. The brunette did feel pretty bad afterwards but at least she wasn’t the only one that laughed.

It was an immediate give away that the girl was a muggle-born when she mentioned that she didn’t belong on the school and also claimed that she tried really hard. Pity was all Aurelia had at the moment. Being put in a different environment wasn’t easy to adapt at first, regardless, Aurelia had seen some Muggle-borns strive at Hogwarts and most were from Hufflepuff. After the event of the masked man, students, a majority of muggleborns fled the school but there were many muggleborns left in Hufflepuff. It was probably due to the fact that they were loyal.

I doubt you embarrassed yourself that badly. There’s really nothing to cry about. I know that the wizarding world has much different concepts than the muggle one and is quite daunting at first. But you are a witch and belong here. ” Her voice wasn’t gently but rather firm and assertive. Though the Hufflepuff was a muggle-born and would not benefit Aurelia much if she established a relationship, the Hufflepuff needed to know that she was a witch and would forever be. If Aurelia wasn’t the one to tell her then who will?

Ellara knew all of this was so stupid. Really, why was she crying? A failed grade, even an embarrassing moment, most of it never really got her all too upset. She regarded the girl in front of her with a thoughtful expression, trying to keep herself as composed as she possibly could, her head held high, despite the four-inch height difference.

To her surprise, the Second-Year Gryffindor didn't actually seem all that too annoyed while listening to Ellara blab, though it was clear that she was usually someone who was, "All business as usual!" Perhaps not a boring motto, per se, but this young Hufflepuff had more of an inclination to take the fun opportunities as they came, instead of planning out her path. Life was about the journey, not the destination.

From the looks of Aurelia's no-nonsense attitude and the regal demeanor in which she held herself, Ellara would have to guess she was definitely a girl on a mission. Still, she seemed nicer than some of the other personality types that shared these same qualities, and not everyone she knew would be willing to pause their day to offer some advice... Maybe she could prove to be an unlikely ally.

Ellara's gaze shifted to one of surprise as Aurelia replied to her, reminding her, once again, that the embarrassment probably wasn't that big of a deal. Just hearing the Gryffindor girl say so already made herself feel bad... Had she really been exaggerating? Ellara could be one for dramatics at times, but the reasoning behind her emotions was still there. The Hufflepuff girl found herself nodding slowly as Aurelia continued, once again reminding her, that despite any doubts she may have, she was still a witch, and she still belonged.

And for that part, Ellara came to realize she was right. The young witch had barely had a chance to prove herself, yet, and already she'd been scoring O's on homework, performing spells, and (mainly!) succeeding at brewing potions. Would a few bad days blemish her right to be there entirely? New information could be learned with time, but no Muggle would be able to take over the natural ability she possessed. And as for the matter with the whole recent drama about Muggle-borns, she'd overheard... What's life without a little bit of adversity?

"I guess you're right," she began, her voice quiet and lacking conviction. Cog wheels visibly turning in her head, she realized she still didn't know the girl's name! Even if they never spoke again, it felt rude not to ask. "My name's Ellara, by the way, though I don't think I know yours." Her tone lifted into a slight question again, as if she were unsure of that fact. She believed it started with an A, but from there, she was lost.

Whatever Aurelia had just said had clearly worked its magic and it was much of a surprise as Aurelia didn’t do much of comforting and advising... actually more of the comforting. The part of ‘its alright’ and words along those lines were what Aurelia considered... a waste of time, and inefficient she preferred to go straight to the point.

Most of all, the girl didn’t seem affected by her directness and and wasn’t one of those bratty stubborn first years who refused to take advice. Perhaps it was just the traits of a Hufflepuff, they tend to be a bit more friendlier and softer, in that sense.

The girl went ahead to introduce herself as Ellara and didn’t bother to give her last name. It was somewhat an instinct that purebloods would give their last name so Ellara definitely wasn’t one and the fact that she was, Aurelia didn’t want anything to do with her now that her problem was all settled, it was still polite to introduce herself, after all, the more people know your name the slightly popular you’d get. Aurelia already had the position as writer of Gryffindor to help her with, by apparently not many students read the house’s papers the team also wasn’t doing quite as well for the past month.

Aurelia Bezuidenhout” Aurelia said briefly before turning back to the mirror and inspecting herself one more time accompanied with tired blinks. There were still so many things that needed to be done, homework as well as making a visit to the library in order to settle an issue with somebody who had spread rumours about her. So rest could possibly wait.

Gossips were something entertaining and interesting to write about in the Gryffgazette but having found out that they were about her was annoying and the best way to solve the issue was to confront the one who let it leak out in the first place.

Any chance you have some coffee?” Aurelia didn’t really fancy the bitter taste of the beverage but this was one of the few occasions where she needed a cup of coffee badly to wake her up. Ellara was a muggleborn and there was a very slim chance that she actually had a jar of coffee grounds in her dormitor.

Aurelia still wasn't quite sure how to read the intimidating Gryffindor girl, but from the way she seemed to judge everything Ellara had to say, it was evident she probably wasn't all that too interested in a Hufflepuff Muggle-Born. The young witch may not have been at Hogwarts for a long period of time, but she knew enough to understand the different social boundaries she faced. Hufflepuffs were generally viewed as the 'nice, friendly, softer' types, but were otherwise often underestimated or simply put to the side. Being a Muggle-Born wasn't... bad, per se, but she knew a lot of the Pureblood students would state otherwise.

Ellara offered Aurelia a smile as she introduced herself, politely asking a quick, "Do you mind repeating your last name again?" Of course, she had little knowledge about pureblood families and had likewise, had little interest in them, but her name did sound a bit foreign to her, and Ell didn't want to make the mistake of mispronouncing it in the future. "Sounds very German... Or Dutch," she commented as an afterthought, easily distracted by those random facts that stood out to her.

Aurelia seemed tired, which was a clear understatement from the way she dotted concealer under her eyes and always seemed to be full of a thousand different thoughts, no doubt thinking through the rest of her day. Ellara was simply wondering if she should meet up with a few friends later, but her schedule was loose. She snapped back to attention after Aurelia's question, pausing to think of the answer. She'd never been much of a coffee drinker (it was far too bitter, and she could fair alright without sleep), but her dad had sent her a tin full of coffee grounds to gift to the Professor of the class she struggled in most...

It probably wouldn't hurt to share it with the Gryffindor girl, and Ellara wasn't much for bribery anyway. Plus, why did wizards need coffee when they had some sort of 'keep awake' spell in existence? "I think I have some in my dorm. I don't drink it myself - bleh! - but my dad sent it over just in case," she commented simply.

[quote][font=bodoni monotype]

Bezuidenhout was a commonly mispronounced name as it wasn’t pronounced the way it was spelt and was almost impossible to if one didn’t know the Dutch language. No matter how many times Aurelia had attempted to teach others the way to say her name properly, they wouldn’t be able to. There wasn’t much of a point in repeating her name but neither would it hurt if she did, Ellara was a curious one.

Bezuidenhout, it’s Dutch,” her words were said slower this time enough for Ellara to catch this time.

A small smile on her face formed when Ellara mentioned that she had some cup of coffee in her dorm. Another lucky day had been blessed upon her yet again. Caffeine was always an effective way for Aurelia to wake up.

Wonderful,” the Gryffindor added.

It wouldn’t taste that bad if you add a bit of milk,” Aurelia said turning to the Hufflepuff. The puffiness in her eyes was still noticeable, anyone whom she passed would know that she had been crying and that wasn’t good.

A bit of concealer would help with those eyes. Crying makes you look awful, ” the girl said bluntly and once again pulled the concealer stick which she pointed at Ellara, wordlessly asking if she’d need it.

As soon as the mention of coffee escaped her lips, Ellara began planning her route to reach the dorms. She had a class next, but after that, she should be available to slip Aurelia the coffee grounds at some point. It should all be fine as long as she doesn't tell her dad, but honestly, what kind of parent condones bribing, anyway? The kind that doesn't have high hopes for their kid.

El nodded as Aurelia repeated her last name, repeating it back in a successful manner. It made sense that the name was Dutch, with all of the strange syllables and the like. She wondered if Aurelia had grown up in the Netherlands, but then again, she probably wouldn't have ended up at Hogwarts, if she had.

"Milk and sugar," Ellara chimed to Aurelia's comment about the coffee. She'd never been one for bitter things, and naturally, had much preferred hot chocolate over the bitter, caffeinated beverage. It didn't mean she hadn't taken sips of her mum's at some point in her life.

Ellara had already appeared to have forgotten about her earlier upset, but Aurelia's comment brought her back to focus. Oh great, I look awful right now, she thought disdainfully, once again a bit taken aback by the Gryffindor's bluntness. Of course, she didn't mean it maliciously, and so Ellara nodded her head. "I guess it can't hurt. I don't usually wear makeup," she admitted, not that she'd ever needed to. Ellara had been blessed with clear skin and nice enough features, but maybe puberty just hadn't hit her yet.

Make up was something Aurelia used only when she needed it, like today for example where the purple under her eyes were hard to go unnoticed. Ellara’s puffy eyes were too. These were just the nasty side effects from both unhealthy lifestyles, lack of sleep and crying.

Ellara clearly felt better now, thanks to her advice but still her eyes weren’t. However, the problem was, Aurelia’s skin tone and Ellara’s has much of a difference, but it didn’t really matter anyways.

Aurelia slipped her hand back into her bag and felt for the small plastic cylinder . However, this time, when she pulled it out, a book decided to hop out as well, dropping right into a smallwet puddle of water.

The twelve year old gasped as she bent down to retrieve it. It was leather backed, the brown leather was shedding from age and a large print ‘Raphael’ was engraved on it. It just had to be that book. The bottom of the book was now soaked in water which caused the corner’s of Aurelia lips to turn down into a frown.

Take this,” she said passing Ellara the concealer before pulling out her trusty wand.

Scorgify,” she incantated hoping dearly that it would do the book some good.
