Sage had yet to explore Hogwarts’ vast library so she made it her goal to head there as soon as possible. The library was somewhat empty but Sage still headed towards to back to avoid other students. She scanned the books on the shelves until her eyes landed on a historical book about Hogwarts. She slipped it off the shelf and found a nearby table to read at. She turned page after page after page until the book got boring. She went back to the shelf and set it back down. She looked around on other shelves until her eyes caught sight of a book about magical creatures. Nothing else caught her attention so she took it off the shelf and walked back to her table. Sage began to read. This book was more interesting than the last and held Sage’s attention more. She read diligently until she was more than a third through the book. The library was still silent other than the occasional shuffle of pages. Sage smiled at the bits and pieces of the book that Cassie had told her about after she found out she was a witch. Sage tuned out the world and began to relax. She stretched her legs out and did not care who saw the prosthetic. She was not going to let anything ruin her day.

It was Saturday, a perfect day to go to the library for some reading. I had picked up my Potions book to go and read since that was the class I wanted to have some improvement in, and I would use my time here to memorize some recipes so that I wouldn’t have to keep on looking at my book all the time. Little did I know, this was not going to be an ordinary day at the library. You see, when I entered the library and went to look for a place to read, I noticed a girl with a prosthetic left leg. I came over to her table and sat down across from here before opening the book to a page talking about the forgetfulness potion. “Good morning.” I greeted the girl. “Just out of curiosity, what happened to your leg? You don’t have to answer the question if it makes you feel uncomfortable.” As I waited for the girls answer, I pretended to begin reading my book while in reality, I thought back to the first time I read about amputations from a book. It was one that my parents had brought home, and it was from that book that I learned about the different types of amputations, how they are done, and why they are needed.

Sage looked up to see a boy sitting across from her at the table. This is either going to go very well, or very bad, thought Sage. Sage was taken aback at the boy’s question at first and she paused before slamming her book down on the table.
“Excuse me? What do you mean what happened to my leg?” asked Sage. Her hands flew defensively to rest on her prosthetic leg. A firm glare came to rest on Sage’s face, making it obvious that she was not in the least please with this boy’s question.
“Is there a problem with my leg to you? I am perfectly fine with my leg as it is. There is a reason why I have this and one that I do not like to go around sharing.” Sage knew what she was saying but she did not speak in a friendlier tone to the boy. She figured he would realize she was not happy and back off. She took her book back from off of the table and opened the book and began to read, well, she tried to read. Sage shook her head and sighed quietly. It never seemed to get any easier for her. People would always look at her twice when she crossed the street or when she walked down a hall. People made all sorts of comments about what had happened to her leg and Sage was tired of it.

“Excuse me? What do you mean what happened to my leg?” The girl asked defensively. Clearly, she did not want like my question, nor did she want to answer it. “Is there a problem with my leg to you? I am perfectly fine with my leg as it is. There is a reason why I have this and one that I do not like to go around sharing.” Okay, so she definitely didn’t want to answer my question, which made sense considering that the event that caused her to have a prosthetic leg was likely an experience that the girl did not want to recall. I sighed. I hated it when I told people that they didn’t have to answer a question if they didn’t want to, only for them to begin acting defensively like I was in the wrong. Perhaps I was. Either way, the situation would force me to apologize if I didn’t want to have further consequences.

“No, I do not have any problem with your prosthetic leg, and I understand why you wouldn’t want to share the event that caused you to have one. I hope that you will forgive me for my curiosity. And as for what I meant when I asked what happened to your leg, let’s think about it, what has happened to your leg? Of course, one could assume that your left leg was amputated, but at the same time, it could have been congenital meaning that you were born without one. And if your leg was amputated, why was it amputated? Was it due to a burn, severe trauma like a car accident, a disease like sepsis or scleroderma, or something else entirely? And then you have the question of what kind of amputation it was. From the looks of it, it’s some kind of transfemoral or higher like a hip disarticulation. As you can see, there is no single answer to my question, and in fact, my question can lead to even more questions. Anyways, I think you would like it if I left, so that’s what I’m going to do.”

As I stood up and picked up my book, I turned around to look at the girl. “Before I leave though, I’d like to say that you could get the leg restored if you want. My parents have had to restore limbs that came off in accidents before, so it’s always an option.” And with those words, I turned to leave.

Wow, thought Sage. This kid seems to know a lot about amputations and why they are needed. Sage stared at him. How did he know all of this?
“You sure seem to know a lot about amputations and what causes them,” said Sage in a low voice. She refused to let on that she was surprised and a bit impressed at his knowledge of prosthetics.
“Is someone in your family an amputee-” Sage caught herself quickly. If she did not want questions asked she could assume he would not want questions asked about himself either. The boy stood and turned to leave and Sage felt herself sighing with relief. Sage was about to reopen her book and relax, but the boy turned around and fired one more comment her way. Sage saw red. She was furious. How dare he tell her she could get it fixed?
“I know perfectly well there are opportunities to fix my leg, but I would have done that a long time ago if I wanted it, right? Or maybe I did not have access to magic. So many things you could guess as to why I have a prosthetic. And I’ll have you know I’m perfectly happy with my leg and I always have been!” Sage was shouting now. She had never really felt more angry than she did right now. Well, besides her father telling her to leave. Sage crossed her arms and stood her ground.

It didn’t take long for me to find myself being yelled at about the many reasons I could have guessed why the girl was wearing a prosthetic, and then the girl in front of me proceeded to shout that she was perfectly happy with her leg and that she always had been. I had just triggered another nerve, and the girl wasn’t afraid to show it with her loud voice and crossed arms. “You’re absolutely right, you know?” I begun calmly. A little smile had begun forming on my face as I looked down at the table in front of the girl. As I begun talking, the smile would naturally fade away. “There are many reasons for why you could have a prosthetic leg, and like you said, one of them could’ve been that you simply didn’t have access to magic, or perhaps you didn’t know. So assuming that that was the case, it wouldn’t be very nice of me to not tell you that you could get your leg fixed, right? But as it stands, you don’t want your leg fixed and that’s perfectly fine.” It really was time to leave the girl alone. Clearly, she had some sort of problem when it came to raking about her leg, and I didn’t want to deal with it.

Sage shook her head silently. The boy was now speaking in a calm tone towards her that Sage found slightly annoying. He started to smile and kept talking. This kid really doesn’t know when to stop and walk away, thought Sage. He started talking about the reasons for her amputation again, but what really surprised Sage was that he said not fixing her leg was perfectly fine. Did he honestly just want to know what happened? He was not trying to make fun of me? thought Sage. She was honestly curious but would never let that be known. She shook her curiosity from herself and stood. She pushed her chair aside and sighed.
“And here I thought the library would be a nice and calm place for me to read, not be hassled about my leg,” Sage whispered. Sage looked back at the book she had left at the table but decided she could go back for it later. Later when there was no one to bother her.
“I’m leaving, but you better stay away from me. I’m not in the mood for another big fight about my leg,”
said Sage, still speaking in a low,
quiet tone. Sage brushed past the boy and out the door of the library.
