2023, Stage 3 Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw: Match 9

In some weird way it felt nice to know there was another experiencing such intense voltage on stage. Galton had no doubt that Pericles would share that sudden elevation in heart rate that he’d had moments before. And he could only hope that his hair would look just as cool. Would he also taste the slightly smoked metallic flavor as well? He’d have to check in on that at the end. But first they’d need to make it to the end.

Well, this duel sucked. Massively, actually. By now Callie was convinced that she had to have been cursed. Or at the very least had clearly done something in a past life to be losing this badly. No, that couldn’t be it. It had to be her lack of a decent breakfast. It truly was the most important meal of the day.

The duel was disorienting. As if smoke and fog weren't already miserable enough, Pericles had a blindfold wrapped snugly over his eyes, and what was more, the telltale rattle of thunder rolled overhead. Two particularly jarring experiences hit him at once: the sound of his paralyzed partner hitting the stage, and a bolt of lightning. Once he shook off the jitters, he wrenched at the blindfold with a newfound vigor, eager to check if Callie was okay and to make his way out from under the cloud.

Two duelists had already been struck by lightning. How could this get worse? The Ravenclaw team was in bad shape. Callie was paralyzed on the ground, and try as she might she couldn't seem to stand up on her feet. Pericles was still struggling with his blindfold. The Gryffindors though...the Gryffindors seemed fine. They had barely been touched through the entire duel. And Jake realized that if they were going to go for the kill, now was going to be the time.

But they didn't. Elsa raised her wand and suddenly a bright light shone across the platform. Jake shielded his eyes from the glare that you could see even through the smoke. And as Pericles took off his blindfold finally he would be greeted with quite a blinding sight, going from darkness to immensely bright light. It must have been quite the shock.

But not as big as the next one...

CRACK! Another bolt of lightning flashed, and once again Pericles was the target. Was he wearing metal or something?? Pain would shoot through him again, and for his troubles he would be greeted with a Petrificus Totalus from Galton that hit its mark perfectly. Just as Callie finally got up from the platform she would see Pericles hit the ground beside her.

Dueling - and most organized magical sports for that matter - made the participants celebrate their opponents misfortune. Of course Galton couldn’t be anything but glad when his spell struck Pericles. He wouldn’t have cast it at all if he’d not wanted that outcome, but the crack of thunder and strike of lightning that followed was different. The only outcome from moving the storm clouds over he’d really wanted was to stay lightning free himself. A second strike was far from any variation he’d predicted. He had to flinch at the sight. It really was not a pleasant sensation.

Dueling rarely had pleasant sensations in it though. And everyone on this piste knew that. Pericles would just need a few extra helping of dessert to get him back on track. And, at the least, his hair was much cooler than Galton’s now.

Pericles was shocked in more ways than one: even once free of the blindfold, he was body bound, left lying on his back beneath the rolling storm. His face was stuck in a grimace as the hairs on his arms rose, a telltale sign that another bolt was imminent. Only a grunt escaped his locked jaw in the wake of the traitorous lightning strike.
