The subject of Defense Against the Dark Arts was one of Nerissa's favourite subjects, second only to Potions or perhaps Transfiguration. This class had been fairly uneventful for Nerissa, and despite being one of her favourite classes, she found herself zoning out for most of it. By the time they'd been paired up, she'd already missed most of the lesson. Her partner, a young Slytherin witch with wavy brown hair, seemed like an okay fit, but Nerissa didn't quite catch her full name. Mellani... Mills? Milsan? Ah, yes, that must be it. Milsan was the name of one of her Grandfather's friends, a pureblood with a quite extensive family. This 'Mellani' must be related to him somehow, meaning that she was also a pureblood. Nerissa couldn't even imagine being partnered with a halfbreed, or— she shuddered at the thought— a mudblood. So far, she'd been lucky, but she couldn't avoid mediocrity forever.

As she gathered her things, Nerissa glanced at her timetable. They had History next, a mundane subject that she rather disliked. It wasn't that it was boring-- Nerissa was enamoured with the past-- but she already knew a lot of the information being presented. Her father's study, a large room and one of Nerissa's favourite areas to break into at night, was full of books. Some were ledgers, some were diaries and some were photo albums, but they were mostly histories. When it was late and Nerissa was tired of searching, she'd pick a random one off the shelf and begin to read. In fact, the book which she now checked her bag for (A History of Magic) was one she'd already had several copies of before coming to Hogwarts. Of course, her governess had insisted on buying a new one, but it looked the same as the others. And she'd read it cover to cover.

Once she confirmed that she'd remembered to bring it, Nerissa put the book back in her bag, along with the materials she'd used in DADA. Lifting her bag over her shoulder, she got up and headed towards the door. Other students were pouring out behind her, but Nerissa couldn't tell if Mellani was in the crowd. She hoped so, for she wished to ask her a question about the project. Nerissa liked to be able to work on her homework alone, so perhaps they could divide the work before the next class. If only she could find her...

For some students, Defense Against the Dark Arts was a setting where the great were separated from the meek, or the predators from the prey. Caoimhe liked the thrill of using the spells she had learnt by Professor Orion, as well as the knowledge she had gained about the mysterious dark forces that surrounded the wizarding world and how to overcome them. While the young Viperess was not yet a Duelist as she impatiently waited to be, she was quite proficient with her cherry wood wand, and she made certain that her peers were aware of this.

While spellcasting proficiency was certainly a factor, blood purity was more crucial to a witch or wizard's success. Caoimhe knew all too well that her reflection in the mirror was a constant reminder of her imperfect lineage. She was well-versed in the art of playing the role she was pretending though, knowing exactly how to carry herself and speak with poise. By embodying the essence of a Pureblood, there was no need for anyone to question her true nature. Right?

As Caoimhe placed all of her belongings in her bag, she carefully placed her ivory quill in its case, and then bolted for the door without saying farewell to the poor Hufflepuff she had worked with throughout the class. She was aware of her schedule and knew that her next class, History of Magic, would presumably be boring and didn't mind loitering about the hall. She stayed back and attentively listened as her classmates filed out of the classroom, chattering excitedly the freshly acquired spells they were just learning, and groaning about their homework assignments that followed suit.

Sorry this took so long <3
Mellani had always liked Defense Against the Dark Arts. It gave her satisfaction knowing that if someone did try to hurt her, hurting them back wouldn't be very hard. Mellani had been paired up with a girl who had called herself Nerissa. She hadn't cared to catch the girl's last name, because, to her, it didn't really matter. She was a muggle-born, and didn't give a damn about what family someone came from.

Nerissa had seemed nice, and was a pretty good partner. Mellani would definitely not mind being paired up with her again. As Mellani walked out of the class, she noticed people groaning about History of Magic being next and rolled her eyes. She, for one had always had a love-hate relationship with History. She loved how it was like a story sometimes, but she hated how it got so boring at times.

Mellani looked around and noticed Nerissa looking around, looking determined to find something. Maybe she had dropped something or was trying to find it. Kind person that she was, Mellani went up to her and gave her a kind smile. "Looking for something?", she asked. She knew that this might not be a great idea, but there was no harm in just asking, was there?

Mr. Milsan was an odd man, but not entirely unpleasant. Nerissa had only had a few interactions with him prior to starting at Hogwarts, but she had retained a few details about the Milsan family. For starters, Mr. Milsan had come over to Europe in 1991, aiming to score a job at the Ministry of Magic. He must have gotten it, for just recently, Nerissa thought she remembered attending a dinner party to celebrate his promotion. And yes, the most important thing: he was definitely a pureblood. In fact, Nerissa had overheard Mr. Milsan vowing to Ms. Creely herself that his blood was so pure that if he were European, his name would be on the list of the sacred 28. Nerissa pondered the man, wondering both about his status and his relation to Mellani. Surely, she wasn't his daughter? Nerissa hoped not.

"Looking for something?" called a voice, at once startling Nerissa from her thoughts and satisfying her search. It was Mellani Milsan, the girl she'd partnered with. Finally.

"Thank goodness, Mellani," she tutted, returning the smile, "I was beginning to think you'd run off." She shook her head in a teasing manner and added, "But then, of course, who'd actually be in a hurry to get to History, of all subjects?"

Knowing that it'd be better not to launch a million questions at the girl, Nerissa opted to ease her interrogation in the conversation. After all, she actually had something she wanted to talk to her about. "Mmm, by the way, what're your thought's on the assignment?" Would it be rude to just ask if they could split the work? Probably.

Argh, stupid people and their infuriating etiquette rules. Well, that wasn't entirely fair. Nerissa rather enjoyed most of etiquette rules, such as proper posture and such. But blunting your words so that they strike a softer blow upon your peers? Ridiculous. Though, the idea of kindness was less of a thing in the higher pureblood circles. Which Milsan was definitely from. So maybe...? No, no, no. Nerissa needed to keep a clear head. She couldn't just go around insulting the children of important families without risking tarnishing the name Astor... Oh, very well then, 'being nice' it was. Lucky you, Mellani.
