The First Night of Halloween
"He extinguished the lights in the lanterns hanging in chains from the ceiling.
The only light source was now the levitating jack-o'-lantern."
The only light source was now the levitating jack-o'-lantern."

1st Year, October 2022
@Madison BennettIt would have been the perfect movie night, if electricity had worked at Hogwarts, and if it had not been a rumbling thunderstorm outside. Simon knew that they were not supposed to play with the Halloween decoration, but he could not resist to bring one of the jack-o'-lanterns into the classroom on the second floor, where he was supposed to meet with Madison this first night of the Halloween weekend.
To prepare the room, he extinguished the lights in the lanterns hanging in chains from the ceiling. The only light source was now the levitating jack-o'-lantern. He made sure to place it in the middle of the room between the rows of desks with the grinning face towards the door. Now, he just had to wait for Madison to show up. As he waited, he practiced a couple of spells. It seemed like he was bonding more and more with his wand each week, much like his relationship with Madison.
Suddenly he heard someone touch the door handle. Simon quickly hid behind the door. A blond girl entered the room – his best friend, whom he also called Aqi because of her scar that resembled the star constellation Aquila. That was also her favorite star constellation. A week ago, they had cemented their friendship by carving their nicknames on one of the walls in the Boathouse.
Just as he had planned, Madison's attention was locked at the levitating jack-o'-lantern in the middle of the room. As she approached it, Simon snuck behind her and pulled a jump scare on her by touching her shoulders.
"BOO!" He instantly started laughing. “I'm so sorry! I couldn't resist... What took you so long?"

The First Night of Halloween
Madison was excited!! It was the weekend of Halloween at Hogwarts and all around the castle there were decorations. She was wearing a purple jumper, black leggings and white converse that she drew pumpkins and candy onto, since it was the weekend and they didn't have classes, along with her hair like this: her hairstyle
As Madison entered the classroom on the second floor, she knew Simon, or as she sometimes called him, Orion, after the constellation that his favourite star is in, was most likely going to jump scare her, but she didn't mind. As she walked in and shut the door, Madison saw the levitating jack-o'-lantern and was so caught up in staring at it, that when she felt hands on her shoulders, she jumped forwards and turned around, only to see Simon. Madison chuckled and nudged him playfully before replying, "What are you sorry for? Scaring me on Halloween? It's ok, I would have done the same to you either way" she says with a giggle as she hugs him. "Hehe sorry, I was writing a letter to my dad. Since i'm going home during the Christmas Holidays, he is going to pick me up outside the train station and drive home to Kensington from Kings Cross together" Madi says with a smile, as she hears the thunderstorm outside.
"I'm glad we're inside and not out, it looks really cold and wet out there. Kind of reminds me about when we were in the Boathouse together not too long ago and there was thunder and lightning for what seemed like forever" she says with a smile as she sits on one of the classroom desks.

The First Night of Halloween
@Madison BennettMadison jumped but did not scream. He was a bit disappointed by her reaction, but realized the whole set-up was perhaps a bit too obvious, or maybe she knew him too well at this point. Simon was not a fan of jump scares, and he had only pulled a jump scared on her once before, but since it was Halloween, he felt like it would be know or never.
"What are you sorry for? Scaring me on Halloween? It's ok, I would have done the same to you either way."
Simon laughed. He could totally see Madison do that. Great, now I have to watch my back wherever I go for the rest of the weekend, he thought. "I bet you would."
"I'm glad we're inside and not out, it looks really cold and wet out there. Kind of reminds me about when we were in the Boathouse together not too long ago and there was thunder and lightning for what seemed like forever."
"Yeah", said Simon and looked out the windows. "It's that time of the year. Let's lock the door. But I don't think anyone's gonna come here either way."
When the door was locked he took the jack-o'-lantern with him and went over to the far end of the classroom with Madison where the teacher's desk was.
"Okay. I realize I was very cryptic in my last owl but I didn't want to spoil the surprise. Since it's Halloween, I thought we could have our own little Halloween party, or Halloween kickoff, if you will", said Simon, and held out his hand to show his surprise as they approached the other side of the desk.
Behind it, Simon had built a cubby house of blankets, looking almost like a tent. He had used four chairs as pillars to hold a red blanket for ceiling. There was a small entrance that they would have to crawl through, and inside was a blanket on the floor, a couple of pillows and a plate with cookies and some candy: Liqorice wands, Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans, Fudge Flies, Peppermint toads and Assorted Sour Strips.
"Enter the 'House of Horrors', if you dare", Simon said in a low voice and smiled. "After you, Aqi."

"I bet you would."
Madison giggled at Simon's comment and starts planning her jumpscare for him, in her head.
"Okay. I realize I was very cryptic in my last owl but I didn't want to spoil the surprise. Since it's Halloween, I thought we could have our own little Halloween party, or Halloween kickoff, if you will"
Madison looked at him and smiled. "It's ok, i like surprises, sometimes hehe. Ooo I do love a good party" she says with a giggle. She takes Simon's hand and walked around to the other side of the teachers desk. Madison loved the look of it and smiled at Simon "this is so cute, i love it, thank you Ori!" she says, giggling with excitement.
"Enter the 'House of Horrors', if you dare", Simon said in a low voice and smiled. "After you, Aqi."
Madison smiles as Simon uses her nickname, giggles and takes a deep breath before crawling through the entrance, sitting on one side and staring at all the candy "No way, Fudge Flies, those are my favourite!! I mean, i love most candies, but those are so good! Most years, my mum and dad get us a big box of candy for Halloween, and this year, my box was majority Fudge Flies so this is amazing!" Madi says with a giggle.
Once Simon is in the tent too, Madison smiles and all of a sudden, gets super scared. "S Simon, what's that?"?" she asks nervously. As he turns around to see what it is, she places her hands on his shoulders and whispers "Gotcha" she says with a giggle as Simon turns back around. She uses one of the spare pillows to protect herself and then shoves a Peppermint toad in his mouth so that he has to sit and chew it. "Hehe sorry, you had it coming, since you pranked me earlier" she says with a smile.
Madison smiled as she and Simon just talked, laughed and joked with each other. It felt so good to just spend more time with Simon, for Madison, it meant she could just stop thinking and enjoy just being herself, not who someone else wants her to be. "Hey, i know it Halloween, but, if you're ever down in London during the Christmas break, let me know, i'd love to show you round my neck of the woods" she says with a smile

The First Night of Halloween
@Madison BennettHe was glad that Madison appreciated the surprise. Another rumbling thunder was heard as they crawled through the opening to the improvised cubby house. He noticed her Halloween-themed braids but before he had a chance to comment them, Madison got a look of all the candy:
"No way, Fudge Flies, those are my favourite! I mean, i love most candies, but those are so good! Most years, my mum and dad get us a big box of candy for Halloween, and this year, my box was majority Fudge Flies so this is amazing!"
"Same!" Simon placed the flickering jack-o'-lantern on some of the pillows beside them, which created a warm, dim and cosy lighting. "This was what Hoax brought me from my parents and I thought we could open these boxes today."
When Simon looked up at Madison, her eyes had suddenly changed. The excited look on her face had vanished and been replaced with something that looked like confusion. No, fear. She was looking at something behind him, over his right shoulder.
"S-Simon, what's that?"
As he turned around, Madison placed her hands on his shoulders and he jumped. Then she started giggling. Simon sighed.
"Ha-ha, very funny...", he said before she shoved a Peppermint toad in his mouth.
"Hehe sorry, you had it coming, since you pranked me earlier."
"Okay. I might have deserved that one", he said while chewing and continued with a wink: "But I only jumped because your hands were so cold."
"Hey, I know it's Halloween, but, if you're ever down in London during the Christmas break, let me know, I'd love to show you round my neck of the woods."
"Absolutely! I'd love to come. Gonna talk to my parents about it. By the way, your braids are really cool today. I'm beginning to think you dad's letter was a lie - you probably got stuck in front of the mirror again!", he said with a cheeky smile. "Wouldn't be the first time. Okay... Since it's Halloween and all, I thought we could have a little story time together... My question for you is, what is the scariest experience you've ever had? Not like losing sight of your parents at the grocery store when you were a kid, but scary as in a 'Halloweenian' sense."

"Really? Are you sure you didn't jump cause you were scared?" Madison says with a giggle, putting her hands in front of the jack-o'-lantern to warm her hands up. "That was kind of the idea though. Cold hands make a person scare easier because of the change in temperature once the cold hands get placed on someone or something, that has a warmer internal heat" Madi says with a smile

Madison listened to what he said and nudged him "Ok part of that is true, but i did actually get a letter from my dad and sent it off" Madi said as she rolled her eyes before giggling. "That's all good and thanks, took me a while but they'll stay in all weekend so it's worth it" Madi says before answering the other question Simon asked her. "The scariest experience in a halloween sense, I'd have to say, happened when I was 9. My dad and I were flying around on our brooms in Bodmin Moor, where the famous match in 1884 happened. Dad knows the wizard who owns the land there and he let us ride our brooms there whilst he and I were on holiday together, mum and my brother stayed home. We were just messing around when dad and I both started hearing a snitch. We hadn't brought a snitch, only Quaffles to practice with, so when Dad and I heard it we both looked at each other and felt a chill, the sun was starting to set but it wasn't cold, so there wasn't much breeze. The legend surrounding Bodmin Moor is that, during a match there in 1884, a snitch went rogue and eluded capture by the two seekers, even after six months of play. They say the snitch is still around those parts somewhere, and so, when dad and I heard it, we went to go and investigate. I saw something golden hovering in the sky, right in front of my face, though as I reached out to grab it, it vanished and neither dad, nor I, ever heard it again during our stay there" Madison says with a smile.
"I know it sounds crazy but it really happened, dad wouldn't stop talking about it for months after we got back" Madi says to clarify and eats some more fudge flies, drinking some water to wash it down. "What about you Ori, what's your scariest 'Halloweenian' type experience?" Madi asks Simon.

The First Night of Halloween
Musical inspiration: Hanging Ghosts
@Madison Bennett
Based on a true OOC story, although I don't believe in ghostsAs Simon listened to Madison's story, he took a Liquorice wand.
"Woah, that sounds super cool. I mean, a rational explanation could be that someone pulled a prank on you, because they knew it was the site of the match in 1884, almost like people take advantage of old ghost houses to rig them. But what if it actually was the rogue snitch?"
Simon realized that his usual analyses was perhaps not wanted in this situation. After all, Halloween was a time for wonders and mysteries. Rational thinking would only destroy the mood so he decided to put that aside from now on.
"What about you Ori, what's your scariest 'Halloweenian' type experience?"
"Hmm... That would have to be something that happened in our house a warm summer evening two years ago. Me and my mom was in our backyard, gardening after dinner. Dad was out in the front. We were almost finished when our neighbor, Mrs. Nettleton, stopped by our house. She had been talking for a short while with my dad before coming around to us in the backyard. Nothing special was said, just the usual exchange..."
Simon paused for a moment before looking at Madison.
"Then Mrs. Nettleton asked... 'By the way, who is the guest?'. My mom didn't understand. 'I'm sorry?', she said. 'That woman, in your house', said Mrs. Nettleton. Mom just looked at her, and I could tell Mrs. Nettleton was a bit bothered. 'I saw an old woman in one of your windows on the second floor as I was talking to Raeborn. Latin American, I believe?'. But there was no guest in our house. And we don't know any Latin American women, far as I know... 'Mrs. Nettleton, are you alright?', asked my mom. After that, we searched the house of course, but there was no trace of the woman. My sister was freaking out about it and slept downstairs for a whole week." Simon shrugged his shoulders. "And that's the end of the story."

The First Night of Halloween
Madison listened intently, hanging onto every word. She loved a good ghost story, though not many people knew that, she didn't like to tell everyone everything, after all, what's the fun in life if you don't have a few secrets.
"Woah, that's super creepy, Mrs. Nettleton sounds kinda creepy too though, maybe she sees ghosts and spirits. Seriously, a whole week? Dang she sounds like a real city kind of girl your sister" Madi says as she eats one of the chocolate chip cookies from her plate. "I don't think someone would be pranking us, dad's friend that owns it doesn't have any children and there's no town for miles, my dad and I were the only two there. My dad said that his friend mainly stays inside the house unless he has to go out, he's had too many trespass on his land since the incident. I think there actually could be a rogue snitch out there somewhere, no one may ever find it but it's an awesome campfire story for sure" Madi adds, as she hears the thunderstorm continue. She smiles at Simon and stares at the jack-o'-lantern, "I wonder what made someone decide that pumpkins were to always be carved out on Halloween, why wasn't it watermelon or some other round and big food?" she asks out loud, posing a question that kind of randomly popped into her head, not that it was strange for that kind of think to happen, she knew it happened to a lot of people, getting random thoughts or questions come into their minds.

The First Night of Halloween
@Madison Bennett"Woah, that's super creepy, Mrs. Nettleton sounds kinda creepy too though, maybe she sees ghosts and spirits."
"Nah, she's just an ordinary Muggle. Nothing special about her, really."
He had a hard time seeing Mrs. Nettleton as some kind of psychic, but if it was in fact a ghost, Simon had learned that you did not have to be psychic to see ghosts. Maybe it was a ghost who came looking for his dead grandfather? After all, his grandfather had spent a couple of months in Latin America. But he had also spent a lot of time in the US, Asia and Central Africa, as well, so perhaps it was a bit far-fetched. Maybe Mrs. Nettelton had just had too many Margaritas that warm summer day. Simon kept these reflections to himself though.
"Seriously, a whole week? Dang, she sounds like a real city kind of girl, your sister."
She got that right, Simon thought. "Yes, why do you think she moved to London?", he said, laughing.
Madison kind of reminded him about his sister, but they differed in a number of ways. Whereas Clara would have got panic if she had broken a nail or got dirt on her fancy clothes, Madison did not seem to mind. She was more outdoorsy in that regard, despite giving the impression of putting a lot of thought into her appearance.
"I wonder what made someone decide that pumpkins were to always be carved out on Halloween", said Madison while studying the jack-o'-lantern with her eyes. "Why wasn't it watermelon or some other round and big food?"
"That's so typical of you to ask something like that!" Simon chuckled. "I don't know. Since the tradition is from the US, I guess they didn't have many watermelons growing naturally over there. But they had pumpkins." His smile slowly faded before he got a more serious look on his face. "I'm glad to be your friend, Madi. Thank you for being...you."

"Nah, she's just an ordinary Muggle. Nothing special about her, really."
Madi smiled and nodded. She'd met a few ordinary Muggles before. Having grown up in a wizard community, the only ordinary Muggles she crossed paths with were in London, though she didn't necessarily stop and always have an in depth chat with each and every one.
"Yes, why do you think she moved to London?"
When Simon said that Madi giggled and looked at Simon with a smile, "hmm i'm not sure, maybe whatever's in your attic scared her away and made her run to the city, though I have to say, more creepy people live, even worse for your sister is that all those people are alive, not dead" she says with a giggle. "Though in the part of London your sister's shop is in, according to my mother, it's highly unlikely she gets many creepy people coming to her, she's in a very upmarket part of London" Madi says with to him. She saw Simon looking at her and giggled "What's going on in that brain of yours Ori? You're not comparing me to your sister are you? Either that or I have food around my mouth but i can't feel any" she says with a giggle as she drinks some water.

Madi smiled and nudged him playfully "What's that supposed to mean? Am i being too typical of someone like me?" she says with a giggle, letting Simon know that she's playfully pulling his leg in a metaphorical sense. Madi smiled and rested her head on Simon's shoulder "I'm glad to be your friend too Si and you're welcome, thank you for being you too" Madi said in reply, studying his serious expression. "Everything ok Ori?" she asks with a serious look on her face.
