Avery's Hex #136b5c
· || ──────────────────────────────────── || ·
┏ ┓----- With a flick of his wrist he sent a nippy blue bolt at Raizel, which made her stumble.
He wasn’t the most powerful of wizards, for sure, but he knew he was certainly the most consistent. Avery was consistently casting in his duel with Beatrice, though she would likely say something like; ‘consistently being a pain in the ass!’ given her temperament; his prowess and competency almost completely lost on her. It was the same in his official duel with the Hufflepuffs, though they didn’t give him nearly enough resistance for him to truly test his mettle; though what arcane power he could summon from deep within was composed far better than anything Pea had mustered; she had nearly hit him once or twice. But this was a very different duel…
Dealla had rendered judgement: ‘Acceptable’, tch! Avery didn’t know who she thought she was, but she had a certain charm; an arrogance that he saw in himself and other inspiring witches and wizards. Ming saw the same in Beatrice, with what Avery saw as a genuine compliment; he felt the same of it but his pride and history with the girl stayed his tongue. Though as the strategically minded girl sent a bout of fog their way, Ming tried something. Avery didn’t quite know what he meant by his rather misplaced questioned, even going so far as to think it an asinine attempt at quelling his spirits; though Avery was not so easily cowed.
”Better than your ballet, that’s for sure.” He quipped back, as mirthfully as his usual envenomed candour allowed. You’re familiar with the science of prisms, Mr Fang?” He continued, letting his quieter words hang in the air, trusting in their target to find meaning in his pause. A rare moment where Avery could display his extremely limited knowledge of the muggle world.
Though as his ebony eyes searched along the directive he had issued, he could hear the baleful screaming that was Clark through the smoke, insulting a name so prestigious that in times gone by he’d likely have payed in blood; especially given the creature’s own heritage. ‘Leverat’, was both incredibly derivative and unspirited; almost symbolic of the sheer brain-rot Avery expected of their speaker. Poor thing, must’ve been rough on his parents. No matter how hard he tried to subdue it, that sparked something in him, a familiar rage he felt only once before in the astronomy tower; a desire for vengeance. His composure cracked, his calcium grill gritted with such vigour it threatened to chip and crack in a similar manner. If he could see him at this moment, he’d surely obliterate the cretinous urchin.
Raizel called out to him then, amidst the thick smoke, denoting that he had a fan.
”An understatement, Miss Voltrouz. I think we could do with some quiet.” He called back, flexing his grip on his wand.

Yet another shot went wide of the target and Donald was starting to wonder if he could even hit a target. A single levitation charm had been all that had worked for him decently so far. Maybe he'd need to work on his aim in the future. These targets seemed so easy at first.. yet the Hufflepuff duelist began to wonder if he'd ever hit even an immobile dummy anymore.
"Incendio!" Donald had blurted out as he tried to send that stinging flame at his opponent. "Where there's smoke... there's not a fire. I can't hit anything!"
Smoke had filled a lot of the fighting area, but Donald seemed to be in a good spot. It might have helped a bit that he was taller, or maybe his spot just was not in the best airflow for the smoke to sit. He was spared the eye blocking smoke screen for now. Opponents would struggle but he could see where they were decently enough by the tops of their heads and outlines. An advantage, perhaps. If he could hit a target, that is. Unlikely as it might seem at the current rate. A little action might be necessary but he knew they'd likely be on alert to dodge as usual even with the difficult series of smoke.
"Hey, badger partner, you still out there alive?"
Actions as owled. Sorry for lateness, travel issues and wifi struggles.

With the smoke about, it was a little hard to tell what was going on, and Dee squinted through the haze, trying to locate the contenders. It didn't seem too thick, so it should be fading soon... or so she thought.
However, Hui Ming had apparently taken inspiration from Bea's strategy, and rather than wait for it to wear off, decided to reinforce the cloud of smoke that was enveloping the stage. Smoke billowed from his wand, drifting without much aim, and finally focusing around Raizel, the Hufflepuff team, and Ming himself. Meanwhile, Avery's pinpoint aim finally failed him; possibly hindered by the smoke, his knockback jinx did not even get close to hitting Donald.
On another side of the match, the red and blue alliance seemed to be struggling a little. Both of them chose to cast fire, but neither spell hit its mark - Raizel's flames shot past Ming, who once again proved to be remarkably evasive. Beatrice's spell, although unusually powerful, went painfully awry, twisting off course and towards Donald, who dodged the haphazard attack easily.
The older badger seemed to have his best round so far. Not only did he escape being hit by two spells, he even managed a strike himself: His remarkably powerful knockback jinx swept Beatrice clean off her feet. Clark, finally... well, Dee wasn't quite sure what he was doing. Not casting, that was for sure. Nothing with any noticeable impact. Perhaps he was meditating? If it stopped the yelling, she'd support it.

Clark screamed out in agony again. THERE WERE MORE SMOKE? Who the hell thought it was a good idea to teach the monsters he were duelling how to cast the smokescreen spell? It was bloody miserable. If anything, it would benefit Clark if ONLY Avery were secluded by the smoke. He was cursed in some way, perhaps, but nothing would make Clark happier than if Avery got a taste of his own medicine.
Revenge wasn't exactly as plentiful as Clark was hoping though, by duelling Avery. It seemed like this entire time, he was stuck being the punching bag. Why doesn't Avery just waltz on over to where the part goblin was- and just punch him in the face. Was there something missing in the long run?
But, just in case there were some form of attacks against him as he really couldn't see, he began to roll around on the floor, trying to remain as invisible as he could. Clark may have been 4 foot, but who looks down on the floor in duelling anyways? You might end up being Flipendo'd- or set on fire. But, then again, where theres smoke, there is fire... so why aren't there any fire? "BURN THIS PLACE DOWN."
But just for the hell of it, he wanted to scream his lungs out. "AVERY LEVERAT, YOU OWE ME BIG TIME! DONALD DUCK, KEEP HITTING THEM! MAKE SURE WE WIN!"
Yes, he had a comment on 'make sure we win' simply because he wanted to enforce the idea that Hufflepuffs were definitely superior in Duelling. No, he wasn't leaving, no matter how many times he would be 'melting' in the fire.

"Incendio!"
A flash of light left the Gryffindor's wand as soon as she said the incantation of the Fire-making spell although she could swear it wasn't that well-casted, at least, compared to the other spell that she saw from the others or her own spells. Today is not her day huh. That's unfortunate. To make things worse, the fog was too thick to even take proper aim at their opponents and her spell missed again. Well, to be fair, not like her spells were hitting anything in the first place which is slowly getting to her.
"This is rough…" she uttered while looking around her with a nervous grin on her face and… the fog seems to have gotten thicker. Someone casted another Smokescreen spell and from the Slytherin team too. "Lovely." Oh boy, this duel sure is getting a bit chaotic. If only her spells could hit something and contribute more to the chaos that's happening around her.
Speaking of chaos, she could hear Clark's screaming again, making Raizel roll her eyes. It would be lovely if someone shuts him up right about now with a spell or two but the others don't seem that keen on targeting him based on the lack of pained screams from Part-Goblin. They had other targets in mind.
A powerful knockback jinx from one of their opponents and at first, Raizel thought it was coming for her but no. The sound of someone falling over just close to her is enough to tell her who that spell just hit and that's none other than her partner, Beatrice. "Bea!" She called out to the older student. "That's a nasty one." She couldn't see it but if that was enough to make Bea fall down, it's gotta hurt a lot.

This was going really, really badly. She'd been so focused on casting that her aim had been totally off. She watched miserably as her powerful flame went off-course, veering off into the unknown, hitting absolutely nothing.
Bea saw out of her peripheral as Rai also cast her spell and it too veered off-course. It seemed they were doomed to die on this battlefield. Well not really die, but suffer. The Eaglions were suffering alright. The smoke seemed to be both a blessing and a hinderance. A blessing for her since she wasn't covered by the thick smoke blocking her eyesight and making it hard to breathe. She felt sorry for Rai since the spell had landed upon her. If only Donald had received her smoky wrath instead. At least Clark and the snakes seemed to be struggling. Ming more so than others as she watched his own smoke spell spread around his own team, Clark and Rai. What a laugh. She turned to where Raizel had been, hoping the girl was still around that spot. She yelled at her teammate some words of encouragement, "You alright there Rai? Hang in there! We've got this."
It was at that moment that her world came crashing down. Or rather she did. One moment she was standing tall, fine if a little annoyed and the next, she was looking at the ceiling, flat on her back. It was at this moment the red head felt a sick churning settle in her stomach. How could she have forgotten how hard 2v2v2 duels were?! She wouldn't be the first to go would she? Not again...

And perhaps those around him were getting a bit too involved in the duel. Hui-Ming could not blame people for caring, but there was a difference between caring about the outcome of a duel, and whatever the Hufflepuff team was doing.
Screaming, casting, yelling. It was an unholy mess.
The best thing he could say about all of this, frankly, was that he did not think his own duels would ever get chaotic. It was becoming all too much, and it felt like he would explode just trying to process the myriad of information that was threatening to overwhelm him.
He could not do this. Not like this. Not right now.
No, he needed a moment, to comport himself, to calm down, to think over how best to tackle this fiasco.
Following Miss Langsreth's inspired idea, the bespectacled Chinese boy cast a smokescreen of his own. It was thicker than her cast, but also less controlled, as past of the smoke centered around him, hindering him as much as it did his opponents."Fumos!"
Irksome. But it was a respite. A thin veil to separate him from the nonsensical menagerie of sound and chaos that was the duelling arena.
A momentary abatement, but perhaps that was all that he required.
He did not have long, but he needed.

It was a quiet round, certainly. A few of them - Donald, Avery - seemed a little lost, perhaps their strategy hadn't worked out as planned, or they were running out of stamina. Hui Ming had apparently decided that shrouding the field in even more smoke was his new job, although Dee could not quite see the appeal. Stalling, perhaps? The snakes had been doing well, but they did not have much of an advantage at the moment.
Clark certainly seemed more alert than his partner, but that was a low bar to jump. He did look ready to jump, probably out of the path of possible spells rather than over bars. But no spell was coming. Really, not many spells were being cast at all.
Beatrice, of course, had found herself making close acquaintance with the floor after being hit by a previous spell, and had to find her feet again before doing anything, which left only Raizel on the eagle and lion alliance in a position to do anything. Another attempt at a fire spell, this time with more success, and Dee nodded her approval as the string of flames hit Hui Ming, leaving him slightly smoldering. Finally, some success for this team.
Sorry for the super late mod post, I have been everywhere and nowhere lately. Only 3 rounds to go, let's wrap this up!

And it was his awesome decision to make it way of life just to dodge. If no one could die on Dealla's watch, sure, it'll be a good look on her, but everyone was here for the incentive for violence. After all, why would they still be duelling at this point in time. Preferably, if he could lay still on the ground hidden from the view of everyone at the time, it would be one hell of a dream come true. Well. Hopefully.
It helped that he was only four foot tall, but wasn't exactly helpful that he had a big ego and was a bit of a jerk to everyone.
Right, so he would need to figure out a way to make himself seem like he wasn't worth being hit, but how? That said, it seemed like he didn't need to jump out of the way, as he was looking around as quickly and as rapidly as he could in order to be properly alert. So, how could he plaster a target on someone else? He couldn't do it on Donald, because that would be bad sportsmanship on his behalf.
So how could that problem be resolved? Would there ever be a resolution to that issue?

┏ ┓----- A silhouette would have been preferable to the terror that assaulted his every sense.
Careful, ebony, eyes had been trying to find a target amidst the thick black smoke; hunting for his next poised strike. That was when he was struck by a harrowing delineation that danced among them, in the shape of the older; dead, student. It was another reminder of the events that unfolded at the quidditch pitch that day, alongside the token packet of cigarettes which had been safely stowed away since then.
All of him forgot himself at that moment. Where once he had pictured their next move to be artful; precise and strategically genius, it was now moot; all for the sake of an anxiety that swept over him like night sweats. Vladimir hadn’t scared him, no. He was an enigma, admittedly; but not someone- or rather something, that he felt he needed to be frightened of. No, what came of that meeting on that fateful night was more than that; a fear of himself; of his potential. Self-assuredness was a quality of his people, but this fear had meat to it.
‘I am black and you are red. I am the black because I was already dead. You're red because of the dead.’ Repeated in his mind, a seeming cacophony that blasted in the space around him, which too shrank and clutched at him, suffocating him in a shroud of shadows that seemed impenetrable. The very meaning of the phrase seemed to creep up from the bowls; as if it was known all along. Would he really end up like him? - He couldn’t yet steel his mind, to hope that he would be some adapted, better version of his father. Though he wasn’t ruled a killer, he knew it to be the case, and that old adage seemed to toll loudly in this sunless space; like Father, like son.
Panting, and confused, he came to his senses; on the field where he would seek a victory to bolster his ego. All that seemed quite pathetic right now, visibly shaken, or rather; invisibly, because of the smoke. He was silent, and did not seek the forgiveness of his team; in fact he didn’t want to bring attention to his blunder at all…
