A Quiet Song
One could be forgiven for thinking that Alicia was mute, but her extreme shyness and her anxiety made it difficult to speak at time. This was only compounded by her unfamiliarity with the two new people, she held nothing against new people she was just very unsure of herself.
As Alexx spoke up and suggested that he could join Alicia nodded softly, he was a bit too far away for Alicia to write him a message. So instead as a greeting she waved her hand carefully hoping it would communicate that he could join them, that was if he wanted to join them Alicia was bad at reading people.
As the wind swept through the grounds Alicia pulled down her beanie a little more to cover her ears, she loved the colder and windy weather but no one liked cold ears. She took up her notebook and began to write a little message to both of the people around her.
‘Sorry I forgot to introduce myself, I’m Alicia Daly. And sorry about the whole writing thing, I’m not so good at talking. ’
she turned the notebook over to Alexx and hoped that the boy would come over at read it, and in case not that Alexx would give him the relevant information.

WITHOUT guessing much off the bat, he seemed like the loudest out of the three and he almost wanted to apologize. But they were welcoming to him and for that, he was thankful for. Otherwise, the boy would have excused himself sooner than later. “The more the merrier it is.” he shot a grin. The boy’s demeanor didn’t change, he didn’t exactly find much of a reason to feel awkward around his peers as opposed to being just who he was. Reid often has a lack of guard in general, something someone might pick up on. The boy didn’t seem to hide much, he had little to keep from someone anyway.
HIS insecurities were put to the wayside for the sake of the other person, perhaps he didn’t feel the need to carry a shield into every conversation. Naive and unassuming, Reid found his experience with people better like this. It was only when the events last year got him ticking, but this wasn’t that. It was very different considering he watched the Ravenclaw turn her notebook over. Reid glanced at the girl not too far from him and let his messenger bag slip off. He barely caught it as he placed it on the ground and came over to see what was scribbled onto it.
THE brazened student repeated the words in a silent mumble, stepping back with a crooked smile on his lips. “That’s quite alright, I think. I’m Reid Kovacs, it’s nice to meet you Alicia.” He fixed his cardigan, pulling it straight as he looked glanced over to his ex-cabin mate. “Me and uh -” What was her name? He didn’t give her a chance to introduce herself to them, Reid seemed a little meek as a result. The Hufflepuff ran a thumb across his knuckles, he chortled slightly.
“ME and her can do the talking then I think. I’ve ran my mouth enough in the last minute that it qualifies me.” There was an amused tone that danced in the corners of the brown-haired boy’s voice, ringing with careless diction. The last part was all too true, he sometimes felt like he talked too much and so he hoped the other girl would save him and introduce herself.

A Quiet Song

"Ah-" Alexx began, mentally stabbing herself for her rudeness. "Alexx. I never did introduce myself when I had the chance..." She trailed off, suddenly realizing how unapproachable she must seem. It was not a habit of hers to make friends, unfortunate as that was. But she had never needed such, not until now. But now as she began school again, she realized how many people had friends, and that she was one of the few lone wolves so to speak.
But on a happier note, she was finally easing herself into the atmosphere. Reid was easy to talk to, and considering that Alicia wasn't very chatty, she had learned to live with it. She was lucky that the only other person who had decided to come and hunt down Alicia was friendly, otherwise, she would have been in a much worse mood by now. But luckily for everyone, her shoulders fell, no longer tense, and the breath she was unaware that she was holding escaped her lips.
She decided to speak up again, just to make up for her part. "And no, you can talk as much as you would like." She chuckled, shaking her head. It wasn't often these days that the blonde found herself smiling, the feeling of homesickness taking over her general day-to-day life, but she had done so anyway. "I don't mind, and I can't speak for Alicia, but I'm sure she's okay with it."
Truthfully, Alexx just needed a little bit more time until she was ready to start speaking regularly, though she had been able to get full sentences out by now, which was a plus. She felt proud; this was something she wasn't conditioned for, but she felt as though she was doing better than most others in her position would have. If she could at least laugh and smile, that's progress if she knew any.
A brief thought crossed her mind, something about how Mikey always attempted to get her to socialize and make friends, but she remembered exactly why it was to no avail, and let the thought drop before she had the chance to finish it. She was not in any position to even be considering the "what if's" of the past, she would save her melancholy moments for when she had her dorm to herself or something of that nature.
Until that moment came, she allowed the smile to cross her face again, and she lifted her head, making eye contact with Reid. She looked between the two, hoping that she now appeared less awkward than before. A cringe ran across the side of her face slightly as she came to an understanding as to how awful she must look. It was something she could kick herself over later, right now she was making friends.

Alicia did not mind if Reid was a talkative, the more he talked the less she had to and that was just fine with her. she picked up the guitar and strummed a few notes to keep her fingers moving, just a few quick bits of a happy little song. She nodded along to Reid’s suggestion of letting him and Alexx do the talking, she would of cause answer questions directed at her she was not rude after all.
She watched as something seemed a little off about Alexx, she seemed anxious for some reason, and not really sure what to do Alicia tried to add some background ambiance to the situation with a little music. She wasn’t really good with words but she knew that music calmed herself down so maybe it would work for Alexx, Alicia remembered many times late at night when she had been woken up by a nightmare how music had helped her calm down again.
But as Alexx looked at the two Alicia just returned the look with a careful smile hoping it would reassure her that everything was really fine, after all it was just the three of them enjoying a nice day.

BEYOND the peculiarities between them, he found them both good company at the very least. He was still largely unsure of whether he wanted to keep talking when Alicia began playing. Though he didn't drop the conversation entirely and decided that it was worth a shot to lead it for once. He was used to the nodding and the short replies he offered, but this seemed to be different.
"IT'S pretty cool that you two play instruments. I'd want to do that if I had the time." he stated as he took a seat in the grass. Standing was a little tiring for him and he didn't think it would be any more awkward than just standing about. Reid envied the kids who knew how to play instruments, he wanted to just have something like this. There were times where he wanted to have the odd moments, where he could grab an instrument he knew and play by the lake.
HE doubt he would ever take up singing a tune though, he already annoyed his friends back in Derby with his screeching. But one of the important questions was, did girls like guitars? Maybe, he liked guitars and maybe girls did too. Though he didn't plan on serenading anyone anytime soon and he had only seen someone do it in some movie. However, he wondered what the Slytherin girl played after recalling that she said she was into music too. "What so you play? Guitar too?" he asked, looking over to Alexx.

The French girl decided to take a seat as well, as her legs had grown tired of holding up her weight (though it was not as if she weighed very much; Alexx was indeed quite frail), much less did she want to be awkwardly standing while the two others were seated. So she took off a flannel shirt that she had covering her shoulders and laid it on the ground, not fancying the idea of dirtying her clothes.
"It's pretty cool that you two play instruments. I'd want to do that if I had the time." Reid spoke up, drawing Alexx's attention back to him. She nodded in agreeance, smiling. "What do you play?" He started again, turning to meet Alexx's gaze. "Guitar too?" Alexx could have snorted if she thought herself capable of such a noise.
"Non," She began. "I belong to the wind family. I am afraid I am quite useless when it comes to strings." A soft laugh escaped her, and she stared back at Alicia, the wind blowing her hair back in the process. "I took up many instruments during my time in the States, so the answer to what I play depends on who you ask." It was vague, but an honest answer. It started as a hobby, but then became a quick way to get good money. Being a street musician had its pros and cons, but it brought home cash.
She paused, pondering on how else she should answer him. To list the instruments she was familiar with would take all night. "I belong, more specifically, to the low brass family. Tuba is the most important instrument next to percussion, never let anyone tell you otherwise." And she left it at that, smiling softly. "And, from the perspective of one who plays it, bass clarinet is a disgrace to the woodwind family." It was not that she hated the second of the two instruments she was prominent in, it was just that it was unimportant and you were often left reading tenor sax parts because no one wrote music for it. And, in her opinion, it just wasn't as majestic as the tuba.

While the two were talking Alicia continued to play, nothing too extravagant just something small and upbeat. She remained silent still as the two older students were talking just still acclimatizing to all the social contact, she was getting exposed to here at Hogwarts, but with the two older students being friendly it helped immensely. She paused the music for just a few moments to get her hair under control, she quickly forced a few stray locks of hair under her beanie. Then she quickly rubbed her hands together to get a little heat back into them before continuing player her little song.
She was quite surprised at the new that Alexx was a brass player and a tuba player at that, Alicia held nothing against the brass family of instruments she personally just couldn’t play them very well. When she had attended music class for the first time she had gravitated towards string instruments and her few attempts with brass had left her gasping for air, so she had just stuck with strings since her hands were far better than her lungs. Still she hadn’t heard that the tuba was the backbone of an orchestra, but then again she was mostly a solo player.

SHE was in America? How interesting, he had never left the UK before and the thought of traveling dazzled him. Maybe one day he would travel the world, but that was a life far from him. He tuned in as much as he could with what she gave him, which was a lot. She knew her stuff, it was rare to find someone so invested in something - whatever it was.
BUT he was a little dazzled by the terms, he's heard them only a few times and the muggle children at his school would have had to learn some of the things she mentioned. Her comments amused him, he didn't get why that she thought they were a disgrace. All he knew was it was the first time he's ever heard someone instrument shame something. He was looking between Alexx and Alicia, two musicians and one observer. He was a stranger to music.
"TUBA is a pretty heavy instrument, I mean, I suppose you get used to the weight." he chuckled softly, watching Alicia play. His mother knew how to play an instrument, a casual pianist when she felt like it. His father had gotten her an old piano from someone in Derby, he learned to like her playing. At first, it was hard adjusting to, he recalled being vaguely annoyed at the off-key notes played. But over time she began to play better and better, he listened more and more as a result. "Are you guys going to maybe join the band? I've heard of students playing together, they have some sort of band at Hogwarts too. But I think it involves ... toads."
"Trouble usually finds me."

Alexx giggled softly, blushing in the process. It always got her flustered when someone mentioned the weight of her instrument. It was indeed heavy, and she spent a whole year muttering under her breath "I hate this bloody instrument!" It was true, she often wondered why it was that she chose such a horn. Was it something she had to prove, or simply that she was taken by the sound it could produce when played correctly? Her family certainly questioned it, always putting a gender label on it, which only fueled the fire she could suppose. And instrument was an instrument, how could she or anyone else decide that tubas were made for males? They were made for people, so maybe it was that she had something to prove. And damn, was she good.
"Yes, it is quite heavy. I'd say I got used to the pain more than I did the weight, but look at that! I got muscles!" She joked, pretending to flex. No, she did not have muscles; she was quite scrawny. But she laughed, bowing her head. "Toads, eh? That is... an interesting choice of sound. Can't say I have ever been a member of a band that involves toads. Heard some weird improvised instruments; chains, barrels, the clicking of valves. Heard some strange styles too (mostly Paganini and Contemporary, those two are rather odd), but never.. toads." She had to ponder it. Toads? Like, the animals? What an odd choice that was. She wasn't sure if she could even compare such to anything she had heard before. Just... picturing it. Now she felt bad about talking badly about the bass clarinet; she could imagine its sound was much more delightful than that of toad's.
Her eyes shifted to look at Alicia, awaiting her response. Was she interested in musical groups? Of course, Alexx was, she had been playing in them all her life. From big bands in France to street jazz in New Orleans, and even just being a subway musician in New York. Alexx played on, off, and under the stage any chance she got. But what of Alicia? She wondered if the young girl had any contribution to the music business, whether her plans be hobby or professional. Where did her interests lie? Alexx always wondered this when meeting new musicians. There were two types, those that carried on with it throughout their life and did so as their profession, or those who just played for the fun of it. Alexx did both, she reckoned.
"What about you two? You mentioned before that you would learn to play an instrument if you had the time to do such. Why not learn? I'm sure you could find the time. And Alicia, you should at the least join a music club if you haven't already! You're very talented." She suggested, looking between them. It was Alexx's job as a musician to encourage those aspiring to be such to learn. They would never know what it felt like otherwise. One would never understand the sensation that being a musician brought if they did not learn. Every time you play a show, or just perform for others even, there were these shivers that went up your spine. It wasn't something you could easily describe, but Alexx knew the feeling well. It was her favorite feeling in the whole world, actually.

Alicia continued to play as the two talked, but she did passively follow along in the conversation. She continued to pluck away at the strings letter a made up melody find itself in her hands with a few slipups here and there, this was how she liked to play quiet and freeform. She had heard about the school music with toads but weren’t they singers rather than musicians? She weren’t sure. But she did feel the need to answer so the playing ceased for a moment as she wrote down in her notebook and handling it to Alexx, she hoped she could relay the message for her.
“am I mistaken in thinking that the toad music is mostly for sinning? I don’t think I could do that since I don’t really have a singing voice at all. And I’m glad that you like my player, but I don’t think I’m good enough for the music club, I’m still pretty amateurish.”
after she gave the notebook to Alexx Alicia just sat quietly for a moment, she sort of wanted to stretch her legs but was worried that the others would take note of her height. So instead she just sat and stretched her arms for a bit before picking up the guitar again.
