Snakes at the Ready
Snakes at the ReadyAfter the first meeting had occurred, there was were four competitors available to compete and this was the first round. A snake versus a snake, an interesting match that might lead to ambition and cunning, without a doubt. It was going to be a very exciting game. Delightful even. As the moderator for this game, he would have the great honor of making sure the rules weren’t broken but as a Slytherin himself, if they could cheat by circumventing the rules rather than breaking them, he would let it pass. He announced out loud, “Colin McCoire and Mellani Miller, you will be the first two competitors of the Gobstones Extravaganza. If you win this match, you will compete with the other winner for the title of Gobstones Extravaganza Champion. I wish you two luck. I will be moderating this round in order to make you follow the rules. Hopefully, you have brought a change of clothes as you will be doused with a putrid substance if you lose. Here is a sheet with the rules of the game. We will be playing the Classic Version of Gobstones today. This involves seven gobstones on the floor and eight gobstones to throw.” After saying this Tristan handed out two sheets with the rules. He had prepared this in case there was a lack of knowledge in the players.OOC Rules

Colin crouched down on the gobstones court, facing Mellani Miller. She was a fellow Snake, but that wouldn't stop Colin from trying to trounce the new firstie! He wondered idly if she'd ever played this game before. He himself had played often enough at home, though he to admit those games with cousins and siblings as often as not devolved into scuffles and wrestling matches! No matter! Colin loved to compete with friends, and gobstones was just another way to enjoy the feelings of winning --- and losing!
He listened attentively as the older boy, Tristan, read out the rules. Colin smirked. Would this be like taking candy from a baby, or would the firstie get lucky and trounce Colin? The court was set with their stones all in a ring within the inscribed circle. Seven from each of them. Colin considered what his opening move would be, as he picked up and fingered one of his eight remaining gobstones.
Once the rules were made clear, Colin said: "Right. You're going down, Miller!" He narrowed his eyes as his opponent as he readied his gobstone! "We'll see how badly you suck at this, lassie. Or if ye're any good!" With that said, Colin gauged his opponent's reaction as he wound up for his first throw. The stone flew from his left hand in what Colin hoped would be a deft arc that would land close to one of Miller's stones, sending it flying from the circle!

Mellani cocked her head slightly as she heard all Tristan had to say. She hadn't brought an extra pair of clothes, but not to worry. She would put up a fight, and if she did lose, running away wouldn't be the hardest thing on earth, or she could bask in whatever substance if she lost in all her glory, totally not being embarrassed.
She looked at Colin. She hadn't seen him around much except the Common room, but she knew he was elder, not that it mattered anyways. One year age gaps weren't much for Mellani. She had never played gobstones before, but she had her experience with marbles, and gobstones seemed pretty much the same, although she doubted it would be, seeing how everything seemed ten times weirder in this new world, because yes, this was a new world to Mellani, and yes, she was muggle-born, and yes, she did not believe in fairy tales.
Mellani rolled her eyes at Colin as he made his comment, "In your dreams, McCoire", she answered, a small smirk on her face, ignoring his next comment as she saw him make a move. Her gaze was calculating as shed decided her own move, deciding to start with something slow and careful, but effect nonetheless. At least, it would hopefully be effective, there was no telling. She aimed a pebble at one of Colin's and made her move, aiming at one of his pebbles on the board.

Snakes at the Ready
Snakes at the ReadyTristan watched carefully as the two competitors began to strategise their actions and verbally fight. He considered the fact that perhaps they knew each other already, as their dedication to beat each other was heightened compared to strangers. He had met Colin before in the common room, and he still had the Scottish brogue that he had introduced himself with, but now even his terminology was Scottish, using the word lassie. Tristan was also born in Scotland but he had practiced and perfected a Received Pronounciation as he grew up in London. As both began to grab one of their gobstones and aimed to throw, Tristan showed no emotion, but inside he did wonder which throw would come to a success or perhaps both. Each of the gobstones flew through the air one after the other. Tristan inwardly winced as McCoire’s gobstones flew past his competitors’ stone and landed beyond the ring. His catapult throw had failed and his method of action was not successful. However, it seemed the younger girl was far more successful with her decision. She had waited a moment beyond Colin, carefully throwing her gobstones. It flew gently in the air landing right in front of McCoire’s stone, pushing them both out the ring. It seems in a strange set of circumstances the first year won this round over the third year. He then spoke, “Congratulations, Miller, you have won this round, but sadly McCoire that was an abject failure. As Miller has won, she will go first.”Moderation

Mellani let a small smirk escape as Colin's gobstone missed. He had been too violent with it for his own good. She smiled a satisfied smile when her gobstone sent Colin's gobstone flying off the board. "Guess I'm better at this than you are, McCoire", she said, deciding her next move.
After a bit of thinking, she decided to try her luck with the classic move, picking up a gobstone and aiming it at one of Colin's. She knew that she should probably have gone with being careful, but using the same move again was boring, and she wanted to try something new, even if this meant that she might fail.
She looked at Colin, her gaze calculating as she wondered what his next move would be. She thought of telling him to be gentler this time around, but that might lead to him succeeding, which, admittedly, was something Mellani wasn't sure she wanted. She still wasn't sure how gobstones was different from marbles, but there must be something that distinguished those two, although Mellani wasn't sure she wanted to know exactly what that something was, as long as it didn't affect her.
Mellani wondered what her friends back at home would think of this game. They never really found a point in playing marbles, and she was pretty sure their attitude towards gobstones would be the same, but yet that didn't reduce Mellani's curiosity about their reaction.

"Grrrrrr," Colin growled at his missing Mellani's gobstone. Such a rookie mistake! He bared his teeth slightly, not so much at Mellani but at his own fumble. "Drat! That was so close!" He watched as his own gobstone rose up into the air, and then it rose some more! Was someone tricking him with some spell or a jinx? And then the bloody thing descended again, arcking well past the edge of the circle! He couldn't have catapulted the bloody thing that hard! But, obviously he had! He watched as Mellani deftly tossed hers. And of course, Mellani's throw was just perfect! Colin wrinkled his nose in disdain.
CLACK!!
Her gobstone contacted his in just the right spot, knocking his out of the circle and rolling right after it. It looked like her gobstone was chasing his away! Her smile told Colin that he had just been owned. And that Mellani knew she had just owned him! Colin grimaced. This was so unfair!
Colin rolled his eyes. "What ever, Miller." His words were confident, but his shoulders sunk just a little bit. Colin shook his head like a dog, clearing his mind. Okay, next throw. Try that dratted catapult again, or something else? He studied the gobstones in the circle, nodding slightly. Once he had selected one to target, he readied his own stone for another throw.

Snakes at the Ready
Snakes at the ReadyTristan watched carefully as the two competitors either celebrated or felt defeated. He considered the fact that perhaps Colin might change his strategy as his gobstone had not reached the mark last round. Mellani however was incredibly proud of her win and perhaps that might create hubris in her decisions causing her to lose the second round. As both began to grab one of their gobstones and aimed to throw, Tristan showed no emotion, but inside he did wonder which throw would come to a success or perhaps both. Each of the gobstones flew through the air one after the other. Tristan gave a slight smirk as McCoire’s consciously thrown gobstone flew gently into one of his opponent’s gobstones, knocking it out of the ring. Perhaps his strength was more than he thought. His conscious throw had scucceded and his method of action was appropriate for the round. However, it seemed the younger girl was again successful with her decision. She had waited a moment beyond Colin, throwing her gobstone normally. It flew perfectly in the air flinging both stones out in a perfect hit. Although both had hit their opponents’ stone, Mellani was in the lead and had some privileges. “Congratulations, Miller, you are still in the lead, but McCoire, that was indeed a success that will allow you to match Millwe As Miller is in lead, she will go first again..”Moderation

Mellani's expression was neutral as Colin's gobstone hit hers and sent it flying off the board, but her brain had several thoughts going through it. Guess Colin wasn't too bad after all. Besides, if she did lose, at least she would have gone down fighting. She smiled with satisfaction as her gobstone too sent Colin's flying off the board. Another success.
Mellani had also noticed Colin's shoulders sink, even though his words were pretty confident. Somewhere down the line, this small sink of shoulders made Mellani feel slightly bad for him, even though it shouldn't have. She was still a kind girl, and gestures as small as these still made her think of her own actions. She ignored the feeling, passing a comment, not unkindly. "Aw, don't lose hope just yet, McCoire. You still might win.", she said, putting slight emphasis on the 'might'.
She then thought about what to do next, and decided to be careful yet again. Might as well test her luck with the same move twice. She hoped that it hit. She very much liked being one point ahead of Colin, even though, technically speaking, it wasn't much, and it wouldn't take very long for the tables to turn in Colin's direction.

"Yesss!" Colin hopped about excitedly! His throw hit home this time, and Mellani's gobstone went flying from the circle! Now he felt a little better. This was more like it! Colin knew he could do this, but sometimes it was hard to focus. Some things seemed easier when he was littler. Maybe he just needed more practice or something. Anyway! His strike hit true, and that's what mattered in this moment.
Mellani's throw was also good. "Aw, don't lose hope just yet, McCoire. You still might win," she said, obviously teasing him. Grr. Mellani could be so annoying. Colin rolled his eyes. That was his job! To tease and taunt and put the other player off her game! And here was ickle firstie Mellani Miller showing him how it was done!
"Might win!? What are you talking about Miller?" Colin smirked. The first year was proving herself to be a pretty good gobstone player; and it sounded like she was putting on her Slytherin too! "There's still a long way to go yet, mate." So. It was going to be a war of words as well as of gobstones. "We'll just see who sucks less?"
Colin focused on the gobstone in his hand, readying for his next throw. Of course, he knew very well that either of them could win. Mellani was certainly good enough to win. Still, it made no sense to compliment the girl! Not just yet anyway! He readied for his next cast.

Action: Classic.

Snakes at the Ready
[/quote]Snakes at the ReadyAs Mellani’s gobstone went off the board, Tristan observed that she did not offer any emotional display at the result. However, at her success, she gave a triumphant smile. Perhaps, she did not display any emotion that stemmed from failure, indicating a fear of weakness. She seemed to slightly regret such, as she gave an encouraging statement to McCoire. She then took her gobstone and threw it carefully. The stone hit perfectly, knocking Colin’s stone off. Tristan smirked and gave a slight nod to Miller, acknowledging his pleasure that the younger snake was winning rather than the older one. He would be fair as a moderator but Tristan was always a fanatic of the underdog winning. He then removed all emotion from his face, settling into a neutral expression. He watched as Colin then began his move, taking his stone as he retorted back. When he threw his stone McCoire threw it the standard way, classically, you could say. However, the throw, though accurate and wise, was not strong enough to push the stone out of the way. The stone landed right behind the chosen stone, yet the hit had no impact. Tristan gave a slight wince at such. Tristan then announced, “Miller you have six stones left on the board, you have won this round. You will thus start first again. Colin, I apologize for your turn of luck, but you have once again lost.”
