Mischief Meets Mischief
This conversation was interesting. Tristan had said one thing, the other person had not quite understood it, and back and forth. He couldn’t help but inwardly laugh, perhaps Tristan had lost his silver tongue for the day, perhaps he was being affected by Burnett’s personality, or perhaps today was just a chaotic day. He smiled sheepishly, chuckling a little bit, saying, “It seems today is not my day for explaining my thoughts. I have seemed to have lost the silver tongue people say I have…” He trailed off and licked his lips, looking slightly off into the distance. He then abruptly changed the subject, “To change the subject though, I was perhaps thinking we could change everyone’s food one day to Muggle chicken nuggets and their quills into ballpoint pens but I don’t know if that is possible or probable.” He smiled slightly at the thought of the chaos that it would cause the purebloods. Perhaps even the confusion at the sudden change of their food. He then heard the question Burnett asked about Legilimency and quickly weighed the benefits of revealing his powers. Perhaps he could… He decides to do so then replies, “ I am a Parseltongue adept, I cannot gain Legilimency because of my non-fully human status.” Tristan waited patiently for an answer with a gentle smile.

"So you...aren't going to answer my questions?" Jack asked, scratching his head. "Is that why you're changing the subject? Is it that you can't explain it properly?" He was surprised the other boy didn't even seem to want to try.

When Tristan proposed a couple of suggestions for pranks, Jack chuckled. "Those seem like decent ideas. Might be fun to try them," he said, imagining the looks on the purebloods' faces at the idea of pens that were self-inking. Maybe they wouldn't be that impressed, though, since there were probably magical quills that did that. Who knew, though? "How do you propose we do that? And to whom, exactly?" It wasn't as though people had their blood status written on their heads, though maybe since Tristan was a pureblood, he knew other purebloods.

Then the blonde Slytherin revealed he was a Parselmouth. "A Parselmouth, huh? So you can talk to snakes? That's cool," Jack commented. "Have you talked to many? I can't imagine there are too many around Hogwarts. Except as people's pets, I suppose." He wondered vaguely if a snake animagus could speak Parseltongue to a human Parselmouth. It would have been a fun test to try out if he ever became a snake animagus. "How did you learn Parseltounge, anyway? Are you a descendent of Slytherin or something?"

Tristan smirked and quickly replied back, “Of course, I’ll answer your questions but I am just disappointed in myself that I can not seem to explain myself clearly. However you may asks many questions you would like.” He stands up then leaning against the chair and placing his hands gently on his book. He then explains, “Parseltongue is not something you can learn, but something you are born with. As for the second question, “As for my family relations, I do not know if I’m related to Slytherin, but I come from a long line of Parselmouths.” He then stands back and considers his companion’s reaction. It seems that unlike many others Burnett does not have the first reaction of accusing him of evil like others would. In fact he was interested. Perhaps he was a muggleborn wizard.Based on your lack of accusation of me being evil, are you a muggleborn?” He gives a quick flash of appreciation, “If you are, perhaps you’d be interested in joining me to marathon watch the Loki season with me over winter break. My parents, though pure blood actually own iPhones that they leave in a magic free zone in our manor. That’s probably strange to hear, but I enjoy the Muggle world as much as any muggle and also enjoy my privileges as a pure blood here too.

"Uh...okay," Jack answered when Tristan assured him he would answer his questions and said that he just was disappointed in himself. "Everyone has a little trouble explaining themselves sometimes, I think. As long as you're patient with me and willing to keep trying to explain, I'm sure I'll get it eventually."

He nodded in understanding when the blonde boy said that Parseltongue was not something you could learn but were born knowing. Apparently he didn't know if he was related to Slytherin, which surprised Jack, because he thought purebloods were pretty good about keeping track of their ancestorial lines. Perhaps this was something that was just too far back to trace. Or maybe Tristan wasn't actually a pureblood and Jack had made a wrong assumption or heard the wrong thing somewhere.

Jack blinked when he was asked if he was a muggleborn based on his reaction. "Huh? Well yeah, I'm a mudblood. But even if I wasn't, I don't think I would have accused you of being evil. Just because people associate Parselmouths with dark magic doesn't mean all Parselmouths are dark wizards and witches. Just like how even though people associate the house of Slytherin with dark wizards and witches doesn't mean that all Slytherins are either of those. I mean, Peter Pettigrew was a dark wizard and he was a Gryffindor, wasn't he?"

He scratched his head when Tristan invited him to join him to watch the Loki series over winter break. "That would be cool, but I'm afraid I don't know if I'll be going home for winter break," Jack said apologetically. "I might just stay here at Hogwarts. Now that you bring it up, though, your parents don't mind muggle things? I thought purebloods hated that stuff and kept it away from their families as much as possible to discourage them from mingling with muggles. Or are you not a pureblood?"

The fourth year yawned momentaily, putting a hand over his mouth. Then he pointed out, "You still didn't tell me what you meant by saying 'not many get away with it'."

Mischief Meets Mischief

Tristan gave a slight understanding smile at the reassurance that Burnett gave but inside, his gut was in turmoil, like something was chewing his insides out. However, as any proper Pureblood, it was perfectly hidden in his expression and composure. He cocked his head slightly at the choice of word Burnett used to describe himself. As a fourth year, Burnett would already understand the perceptions of the word, so it was definitely not naïveté. Thus, Tristan concluded it was a purposeful choice to do so. He slightly narrowed his eyes, imperceptible to most, except those with the keenest of eyes, and noted, “Hmm, what an interesting manner to describe yourself.” As Burnett revealed he would most likely stay at Hogwarts over winter, Tristan slightly nodded and replied, “Well then, I could stay over break as well. I do not have the closest of relationships with my parents and it does not matter to me whether I stay or go. I usually stay with the house elves, or perhaps my tutor, not my parents anyway.
At Burnett’s questioning of his blood status, he said, “Yes, my parents are quite eccentric. Our bloodline was always supportive of blood purity and hated muggle items until this previous generation. In fact, they vacation quite often in the muggle world and enjoy its amenities. I suppose I have Voldemort to thank for that, because it was technically his actions that changed my parents’ mind about such things. In fact, I grew up with a Muggle and Magical Tutor.” He took a breath after the explaination then was reminded that he had not answered his companion’s question yet.
He thus continued, “As for that, what I meant is that manipulating a person is something most people don’t get away with. If you gain a friendship just for the purpose of gain, and you do indeed take what you need from that person you befriend, it’s quite hard to do such without revealing your true motives.

"It's easier to say than 'muggle-born' and catchier because it rhymes," Jack explained when Tristan commented on what an interesting manner he used to describe himself. "Also, I know it's supposed to be an insult, but not everyone knows that. If I use it like it's normal, then eventually, it might be."

Jack blinked in surprise when Tristan said he usually stayed with the house elves or his tutor. It sounded like a lonely existence. "You don't have any siblings, then? Or any other family?" He scratched his head. "I mean, I don't mind if you stay here, but I wouldn't want you to be bored if you preferred to watch movies or shows at home."

He listened to the blonde Slytherin explain his family's ideas on muggle items. "How did Voldemort's actions change your parents' mind?" he wanted to know. "Didn't he hate muggles, too?"

Then Tristan answered his question regarding what not many got away with. Jack's brows furrowed, perplexed. "Why would you want or need to do that, though? Isn't it easier to just tell someone you want a business-like relationship and use them for what you need without manipulating them?" In Jack's opinion, a friendship obtained for the sole purpose of gain wasn't really friendship at all. "Personally, though, I wouldn't think it'd be that difficult. You just have to be good at pretending to make friends."

Mischief Meets Mischief

Tristan smirked at the interesting reasoning that Burnett offered for his usage of mudblood. His heart warmed at the fascinating nature of the person in front of him. His smirk loosened into a slight twitch of the lips, “You are fascinating, Burnett. I have never seen anyone call themself such on purpose before. It’s quite unique and I enjoy unique acquaintances.”
He contemplated the question that Burnett asked. He winced inside as he thought of his loneliness. He answered, “I used to have a friend, but not other siblings. My grandfather has passed already as well.” He paused then and answered, “They saw that Voldemort’s ideology damaged wizards more than accepting Muggles. Perhaps indeed it might be better to have a business relationship, but making someone truly love you while manipulating them to do what you want them to is an interesting endeavour.
Perhaps Tristan could reveal some more information about himself at this point, “As for why I no longer have a friend, it is because he passed away the year before I entered Hogwarts. He was Muggle actually, though that surprises people.” Tristan put on a nonchalant mask allowing no emotions to leak through because he never was one for emotional outbursts because he feared if he let go now, it would all pour out in a gush. The only sense of hurt that appeared was a slight glimmer in his eyes. “But enough with this emotional stuff, I would be content with the company of my own age and species so, staying is amenable to me. However, the familial situation has improved and I have gotten closer to them this past year due to personal circumstances. It is just not as close a relationship as others might have”

At being called fascinating, Jack smirked back. "Well, you're pretty fascinating yourself, Theramin," he answered back, playfully nudging Tristan in the side with his elbow. He hadn't met a pureblood with the same interest in muggle things as Tristan, after all.

Noticing the blonde wince after he asked his question about not having any siblings or any other family, Jack wondered if it was a sore subject for Tristan just like it kind of had become a sore subject for himself. Still, though, Tristan continued to answer, so Jack continued to listen. "You used to have a friend? What, here at Hogwarts, or elsewhere? Were they a pureblood, too?"

He frowned when he heard Tristan say that he thought making someone truly love you while manipulating them to do what you wanted them to do was an interesting endeavour? "Really? It just sounds like being a jerk to me," Jack answered. "It's easy to endear someone to you, especially if you make them believe you like them just as much back. But to make someone who likes or loves you do what you want them to do is far too easy in my opinion. Naturally people who care about you will easily do what you want for your sake. It's much more difficult to manipulate the actions of your enemies or people who hate you."

When he heard Tristan say his friend passed away the year before he entered Hogwarts, Jack's brows furrowed deeply. "That's horrible! How did he pass away? If you don't mind me asking, of course." He wondered if it had something to do with other purebloods.

Jack blinked upon hearing Tristan mention that his familial situation had improved and he had gotten closer to them in the past year due to personal circumstances. He wondered what those circumstances were, but wasn't sure if Tristan would have liked to share them. "Did you...want to elaborate on the circumstances that brought you closer to them, or would you rather not?" He knew he had been asking a lot of questions, but Tristan had said he could ask as many questions as he liked. Of course, Jack supposed that didn't mean he said he would answer all of them, though.

Mischief Meets Mischief

As Jack complimented him back, Tristan gave a quick shy smile, his cheeks turning slightly pink, despite his desire for them not to. He replied back, “Why, thank you, Burnett, you are one of the few who have complimented me so. I am a cold jerk or unapproachable to most people it seems.” As he was nudged in the shoulder however, he playfully glared and joked, “You didn’t have to hit me that hard, Burnett, like an American football player.
The other person seemed to understand how sore the topic was as he continued to listen politely. Tristan answered Jack’s first question as quickly as he could, “He was a muggle, so no, he was not a pureblood.” After he answered, his face turned perfectly emotionless, almost a statue except for his eyes. Tristan continued to listen as Burnett explained his opinion on manipulation and considered the other intently. With a strange indiscernible emotion on his face, he answered back, “Well then I suppose you would consider me a jerk then. Well, I would consider such a person a jerk also, so I would be a hypocrite either way. As for manipulating an enemy, I had never considered such before. That is indeed true. I shall change my opinion on such from now on.” When Burnett’s brows furrowed at Tristan’s revelation of Edward’s death, Tristan looked to the side and showed no emotion even though inside it felt like everything was in turmoil once again. He turned back to answer, with a cold look on his face, a deadened look, as if he would like to be dead too, “it was something magic could have saved him from, a mere little car accident.” Tristan dare not show any emotion so he stood there with a smirk on his face hiding everything that Burnett could have seen. His eyes flashed when Burnett asked a question once again. In a feigned joking manner and a smile on his face , he answered, “Must you ask this many questions Burnett, you’re as bad as my grandmother when she was alive. But I will answer, ironically it was another death and another car accident that brought us together.” Tristan gave a cold laugh that had no humor in it, his lips tightening. He then said in French, “Pourquoi je vis, pourquoi je meurs. Pourquoi je ris, pourquoi je pleure. Why do I live, why do I die. Why do I laugh, why do I cry.
