your way here, but good for us, Earth hasn't been invaded yet."
First Year, October 2022
An unusual morning followed after Simon found Delilah Chapman laying in the grass in the courtyard as he was heading to the Great Hall for an early breakfast. Wearing nothing but cosy pants with spaceship motifs and a black t-shirt with an alien saying 'Earth invasion', she had apparently been trying to take a nap. That was until she started trying to think about what the clouds looked like. Before he knew it, he had found himself lying in the grass beside her, doing the exact same thing. Next, she invited herself to have breakfast with him.
Simon sat down in the Great Hall (which was nearly empty from students because of the early hour). Delilah had gone back to the Gryffindor Room to change into her school uniform. He wondered how long he would have to wait. She did not seem like that kind of girl who would do her hair in the mornings. Given how it looked during the days – wild and uncontrollable – she did not.
"Morning, Simon", said one of his classmates as he passed him.
"Morning", said Simon rapidly, keeping an eye out for Delilah.
For a short moment, he considered whether his reputation was at stake for hanging out with her. Not that he had any, but once he started being seen with her, he was probably going to be known as that overly kind guy that had either no taste in friends or no demands or standards whatsoever. But when he thought about it, that was exactly who he was. Perhaps not overly kind (he believed all people should be treated equally and with dignity and respect; that was one of his core values) but he did not have any predetermined criteria what a friend should be or should not be like. After his meeting with Delilah in the library, where she had proclaimed the 'missing socks mystery' and developed her 'unicorn theory', he could not help but to admit to himself at least, that he had in fact enjoyed her company – not despite the way she was, but because the way she was.
A figure with an unmistakably frizzy hair style showed up in the doorway, almost bringing with her a piece of the sun with her golden hair and childishly happy smile into the Great Hall.
"Oh, look who's here!", said Simon and smiled, probably just as childishly as he was genuinely glad to see that she showed up in time. "Fully dressed and all. I was afraid you were going to be abducted by aliens on your way here, but good for us, Earth hasn't been invaded yet. And there's plenty of breakfast. I hope you're hungry."
There was pancakes with strawberry jam and whipped cream, fried bacon and scrambled eggs, freshly baked bread with cheese, ham and salami, cupcakes and vanilla buns, fresh fruit, tea, coffee and juices of all kinds. Simon was more of a classical orange juice guy, but lately, he had been enjoying the pineapple juice more and more.

Taking Their Heads Out of the Clouds
After Delilah's unusual encounter with Simon this morning, Delilah's hunger pangs grew stronger, and she couldn't resist the temptation to invite herself to join Simon in the Great Hall.
Eager to join her friend and indulge in a satisfying morning meal, Delilah quickly excused herself from the conversation and hurried back to her dormitory. She knew she needed to freshen up and prepare for the day ahead before venturing down to the bustling Great Hall.
Slipping into her robes with a hint of carelessness, Delilah paid little mind to the buttons that were left unfastened or the collar and tie that were slightly askew. Her robe, adorned with a spacship brooch pinned at the lapel, showcased her penchant for cosmic adventures. Peeking out from beneath her robe, small yellow socks with black straps added a touch of whimsy to her ensemble, contrasting playfully against the conventional black shoes. Her blond curls, wild and untamed, rebelled against her attempts to tame them, framing her face in a playful and unruly manner. She caught sight of the mirror, adorned with doodles and stickers of cats and alien heads, and chuckled at the reflection of her unconventional style.
With her uniform in its uniquely disheveled state, Delilah took a deep breath, her rumbling stomach demanding her attention. Grabbing her wand from the cluttered nightstand, she absentmindedly tucked it into a pocket within her robe, ensuring it was readily accessible for any magical surprises that might await her throughout the day.
Navigating her way through the bustling corridors, Delilah joined the throng of students converging towards the Great Hall. The symphony of laughter, animated conversations, and the clatter of cutlery filled the air, signaling the promise of a delectable morning feast. Amidst the sea of fellow students, Delilah's gaze landed on Simon, and her face lit up with genuine delight. She navigated through the crowd, her excitement palpable with every step she took. Arriving at Simon's side, she greeted him with an enthusiastic wave and an invitation to share the morning meal together.
As Delilah settled into her seat in front of Simon, the tantalizing scents that wafted through the air further intensified her hunger, igniting her taste buds and igniting a sense of eager anticipation.
"Fully dressed and all. I was afraid you were going to be abducted by aliens on your way here, but good for us, Earth hasn't been invaded yet. And there's plenty of breakfast. I hope you're hungry."
Delilah raised an eyebrow, her eyes widening with mock excitement. "Oh, Simon, you caught me! Being abducted by aliens is my secret dream, you know," she replied, her voice dripping with exaggerated enthusiasm. "I've even prepared a 'Welcome, Extraterrestrials' buffet menu for the occasion. Martian muffins, Saturnian sausages, and perhaps a side of lunar pancakes!"
She loudly giggled and Delilah's eyes sparkled with delight as she spotted the tray of cupcakes adorned with swirls of strawberry frosting and billowy clouds of whipped cream. Her heart skipped a beat, and her mouth watered at the sight of the delectable treats. Nestled beside the cupcakes was a glass of chilled apple juice, beckoning her with its crisp and refreshing allure. She reached for a cupcake, its sponge base moist and inviting. The strawberry frosting was a vibrant pink, enticing her with its creamy sweetness. Delilah carefully took a bite, savoring the perfect balance of flavors. The luscious strawberry frosting melted on her tongue, complemented by the airy texture of the whipped cream.
As she indulged in the delightful cupcake, she reached for the glass of apple juice. The cold liquid refreshed her palate, its crisp and tangy notes providing a delightful contrast to the sweet treat in her hand. Each sip brought a burst of fruity goodness, perfectly pairing with the strawberry-infused cupcake. Delilah's taste buds danced with joy, she loved how even the simplest of moments could be transformed into lighthearted memories that would be treasured long after the plates were empty.
With a playful wink, she raised her glass of apple juice in a toast. "Here's to the power of cupcakes and their ability to make breakfast a magical affair. May we always find joy in the sweet surprises that Hogwarts has in store for us!"
Delilah's giggle erupted like a burst of effervescent bubbles, dancing in the air with a delightful playfulness.

"Oh, Simon, you caught me! Being abducted by aliens is my secret dream, you know. I've even prepared a 'Welcome, Extraterrestrials' buffet menu for the occasion. Martian muffins, Saturnian sausages, and perhaps a side of lunar pancakes!"
If it was not for her loud giggle (drawing attention to them from the other tables) Simon would have thought that she was being dead serious, but he could never really be sure about anything with Delilah. Either it was her vivid imagination speaking, or that was in fact a scenario that she had planned for.
"I bet you have", said Simon diplomatically and smiled, before they started filling their plates. "I'm starving. Good you came when you came, otherwise I would have eaten it all." Simon took a bite of a croissant before loading some scrambled eggs on the side of his plate.
Then Delilah raised her glass. Simon looked around the Great Hall, thinking it was not appropriate or normal to make a toast during breakfast.
"Here's to the power of cupcakes and their ability to make breakfast a magical affair", said Delilah. "May we always find joy in the sweet surprises that Hogwarts has in store for us!"
A bit hesitant, Simon raised his glass (not as high as Delilah) while glancing at the people around them in the corner of his eye. "Well said. Cheers."
He took a sip of his pineapple juice, and while doing so he noticed that Delilah had several unfastened buttons on her shirt, and her tie was unusually loose.
"Erhm, you might wanna...", he said with a lowered voice and pointed to the buttons on his own shirt while looking at her hers to give her a signal of what he meant. "Yeah... And maybe if you..." He pointed to his tie, before realizing how he must have sounded; like some upper class snobby school boy! That was not him. He was not anything like that. Simon was neither very conservative or prudish. But his actions said otherwise. Instead he closed his mouth, looking firmly at Delilah for a moment. "Never mind", he said and loosened his tie and unfastened the top button of his shirt before taking a large bit of the toasted bread with a mischievous smile.

Taking Their Heads Out of the Clouds
Delilah's eyes widened in surprise as Simon gestured to his own shirt buttons and tie, silently indicating that she should adjust her own attire. For a moment, she felt a mixture of embarrassment and gratitude. It was true, she wasn't always the most put-together when it came to her appearance.
Blushing slightly, Delilah glanced down at herself, noticing the unfastened buttons and the loosely tied tie. She couldn't help but giggle at her own absentmindedness. It seemed that her enthusiasm for breakfast had gotten the better of her, causing her to overlook the finer details of her uniform.
With a sheepish smile, she quickly reached for her tie, giving it a hasty but improved knot. Then, she started buttoning up her shirt, ensuring that each button found its proper place. She couldn't help but feel a sense of appreciation for Simon's attention to detail and his subtle reminder.
"Thanks, Simon," Delilah said with a grateful smile, her voice to a hushed whisper"I suppose my mind was too preoccupied with intergalactic feasts to pay attention to my appearance. But fear not, the buttons are now secure, and the tie is in order. Ready to take on the day!"
Her cheeks still tinged with a rosy hue, Delilah continued to enjoy her meal, savoring each bite of the fluffy pancakes topped with strawberries and whipped cream. She couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth and comfort as she sat there with Simon, appreciating the little moments they shared and the laughter that danced between them.
As the conversation flowed and the sounds of the Great Hall filled the air. Delilah couldn't resist the opportunity to tease Simon, knowing that their friendship thrived on lighthearted banter.
"Oh, Simon," she said with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes, leaning closer to him. "Next time you can be my fashion consultant, ensuring that I'm always the epitome of sartorial elegance." She winked playfully, taking another bite of her cupcake.

"Thanks, Simon. I suppose my mind was too preoccupied with intergalactic feasts to pay attention to my appearance. But fear not, the buttons are now secure, and the tie is in order. Ready to take on the day!"
"No problem. Benefit of being a Ravenclaw – we have sharp eyes", he said and took another bite with a small smile.
Not that I was looking, he thought, afraid it might have sounded weird. But how could you ever miss the gaping holes in a white shirt on someone? Making up the defense silently to himself was good enough for him. Besides, it was a good thing that he noticed it first and not somebody else. Some of the older students at Hogwarts seemed to be looking for every reason possible to pick on the First Years. If he could protect Delilah from giving them one, he would.
As the breakfast proceeded, he found himself having a good time with his new friend, almost forgetting that there were other people around them. It was like they were in their own little bubble of spaceships, weird ideas and laughter.
"Oh, Simon", said Delilah and leaned towards him over the table (he noticed that her robe dipped in her plate, but the plate was almost empty so it did not matter much). "Next time you can be my fashion consultant, ensuring that I'm always the epitome of sartorial elegance."
Simon laughed. "Well, I don't know about that. I don't know much about fashion. I just have a keen eye, that's all. Which is why I am able to notice that you have fastened each of the buttons on your shirt wrong", he said with a smile. "I'm sorry. But don't you worry. You can fix that in the corridor as we leave. And no one will notice as long as you have your shirt tucked in your skirt anyway."
He kept himself from laughing and hoped he was not embarrassing her too much. The last thing he wanted was to mock her for these small mistakes, but he could not help but find it all very amusing. He would not be surprised if those yellow socks of hers were put on inside out.
"Oh, that's right! I never told you", said Simon. "When we got back from the library that night, believe it or not... but I was actually missing a sock. And I have not seen it since. I'm glad it's only a sock though. Seems like a harmless thieving unicorn, that one." He chuckled.

Delilah couldn't help but burst into laughter at Simon's remark about her fastened buttons. It was the kind of lighthearted teasing that she had come to expect and appreciate from their friendship. She playfully rolled her eyes, realizing her fashion mishap had been caught by his observant eyes.
Delilah exclaimed between fits of laughter. "Buttons, the eternal foes of fashion! I swear they have a vendetta against me. But fear not, my friend, I shall tame these rebellious buttons before we venture out into the corridors. Can't have the fashion police chasing after me now, can we?"
The thought of unicorns stealing socks once again danced through Delilah's mind, sparked by Simon's mention of his missing sock from their previous library conversation. She grinned mischievously, ready to continue their playful banter.
"Speaking of unicorns and their sock-stealing tendencies," Delilah chimed in, a twinkle in her eyes. "I've developed a foolproof defense strategy. You see, I've been hiding my most colorful and mismatched socks at the bottom of my drawer. If any sneaky unicorns dare to enter my dormitory, they'll be so dazzled by the vibrant chaos that they'll forget all about stealing my socks! It's a brilliant plan, really."
Delilah's smile didn't stretch on her face as one would expect, she was serious about helping Simon at protecting his socks from any sock thief wandering around the castle.
Her gaze wandered curiously across the portraits adorning the walls. As she took another sip of her apple juice, her attention was captivated by the animated figures within the frames. The portraits depicted a diverse array of witches, wizards, and enchanting landscapes, each with its own distinct personality.
With a mischievous smile, she couldn't help but blurt out, "You know, it's quite convenient having these portraits around. It's like having a bunch of nosy neighbors, but with better fashion sense!"
She grinned and took a big bite of a new cupcake.

"Buttons, the eternal foes of fashion! I swear they have a vendetta against me. But fear not, my friend, I shall tame these rebellious buttons before we venture out into the corridors. Can't have the fashion police chasing after me now, can we?"
Thinking of the potential bullies as 'fashion police' made Simon burst into laughter. He almost choked on his pineapple juice and started coughing and patted himself on the chest with watering eyes. He thought that if everyone was as light-hearted as Delilah, the world would be a merrier place.
When she told him about her defense strategy for protecting her socks, Simon thought she was running just another one of her clever jokes, but judging from her facial expression she was serious with this one. Simon's smile faded and he nodded with a serious look on his face: "Oh yeah, no, for sure."
"You know, it's quite convenient having these portraits around", said Delilah, looking around the Great Hall. "It's like having a bunch of nosy neighbors, but with better fashion sense!"
"Yes, I guess you could say that", said Simon and followed her gaze around the hall. He was actually not a fan of the moving portraits. They always gave him the feeling that someone was starring at him wherever he went. "I try to not think of them as real people, though. I mean, in fact, they aren't. Otherwise, there would be little privacy around here."
Simon looked back at Delilah. "Okay. We've been talking about unicorns, aliens, Earth invasions and wardrobe malfunctions, and all that is very interesting, but I realize I hardly know anything about you. Tell me a little about yourself. Something I don't know about you.", he said, smiling.

Taking Their Heads Out of the Clouds
Delilah's eyes widened, her mischievous grin fading slightly as she considered Simon's request. It was true that amidst their humorous banter and playful exchanges, they hadn't delved much into personal details. She used to be so open about herself when first meeting someone she liked but now it changed, she didn't know why or how but it just...changed. She paused for a moment, contemplating how to respond. She didn't have any talent or remarkable experiences, maybe this is why she's been avoiding talking about herself this whole time. Delilah feared that Simon would loose interest once he knew that she didn't have anything that could make her special or at least useful.
She took a moment, her mind racing as she contemplated how to respond. Ideas for fantastical stories or exaggerated talents flashed through her mind, but she quickly dismissed them. Delilah prided herself on her honesty, and she couldn't bring herself to fabricate something that wasn't true.
Delilah didn't know how to draw or play music or danse or play sports. She liked reading but that Simon already knows from their library encounter. She put down her drink on the table and sighed. She was a failure, she realised, a lazy and unmistakebly unuseful failure, the only thing she knew how to do was to joke around and take long naps. She let out a soft sigh, her gaze shifting to the table in front of her. Placing her drink down, she fought against the wave of self-doubt that threatened to consume her. It was then that a spark of resilience flickered within her.
With a determined smile, Delilah raised her eyes to meet Simon's. "You know, Simon," she began, her voice tinged with a mix of sincerity and playfulness, "I may not possess extraordinary talents or boast incredible stories, but there's one thing I excel at—I know how to have fun."
Her words carried a hint of self-assuredness as she continued, her eyes lighting up with genuine enthusiasm. "I believe in cherishing the simple pleasures in life. Whether it's organizing spontaneous picnics by the lake, embarking on whimsical adventures through the castle's hidden corridors, or even just sharing a genuine laugh with friends, I find joy in those moments."
Delilah's voice grew animated, her gestures expressive as she recounted her perspective. "And let's not forget my uncanny ability to locate the coziest nooks for a quick catnap! I've scoured every corner of Hogwarts, from the common room's squishiest armchair to the secluded alcoves of the library. I like sleeping a lot !"
As a genuine laugh escaped her lips, Delilah felt a renewed sense of self-acceptance. Her quirks and playful nature were as much a part of her as anyone else's talents or accomplishments. She had learned that life wasn't about extraordinary feats but about embracing one's true self and finding happiness in the small, cherished moments.
Leaning in closer, her head slightly tilted, Delilah's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "What about you, Simon ? You didn't tell me anything about you either . "

Taking Their Heads Out of the Clouds
Simon just looked at Delilah with his mouth wide open as she gave him the most honest and brilliant description you could ever expect from someone. When she got to the sleeping part he laughed. What she said probably explained why she had been in one of the nooks in the library the first time they spoke to each other, and of course, why he found her napping (or trying to do so) in the courtyard this morning. Delilah did not put a lot of weight in what other people thought of her – if she wanted to nap, she took a nap. If she wanted to wear dorky clothes with alien motifs, she did. So freaking what? More people should be like that, Simon thought. To do whatever they found joy in doing.
For the first time it was like he understood Delilah (or at least a part of her). And he actually found her to be surprisingly rational. While sleeping on the grass in the middle of the courtyard an October morning may have seemed irrational to some, Simon could see that there actually was some rationality to it, if all the norms were taken out of the equation.
"What about you, Simon? You didn't tell me anything about you either."
How could he possibly top such an excellent description?
"Well... I was about to tell you about all the boring stuff, how I live in Edinburgh, have a Muggle mother, a squib sister, went to a Muggle primary school... But now that you know all that, maybe I can say that... I don't like injustices. Or people who are mean to others. There was a lot of bullying going on at my previous school, and harassment, both of the racist and sexist kind. That's like the only time you will see me angry... I can't look away from those things."
Simon shrugged his shoulders with a look of ' That's just who I am'.
"Otherwise, I can tell you that I like eating a lot! I'm always hungry." He smiled. "I also like climbing trees and exploring, which is why Hogwarts is such a gold mine. I may look like this complete bookworm and 'Professor pleaser' in class, but that's only half the truth. I guess that the other truth is –" He looked around once more, but instantly cursed himself for doing so (stop caring...) "– I sometimes feel imprisoned. Imprisoned by all these expectations. There's all these expectations on your behavior. On your grades. On your accomplishments. Sometimes I just wanna..." His eyes wondered to her wrongly fastened buttons on her shirt. "... be more me. Whoever that is. But he surely doesn't enjoy a tightly tied tie around his neck all the time."
He paused for a moment, and looked into her big hazel colored eyes. Then he chuckled nervously. "I went a bit deep, didn't I? Can I ask you something else... Completely random, this one. Why do you think you belong in Gryffindor?"

Taking Their Heads Out of the Clouds
Delilah listened intently to Simon's heartfelt words, her mischievous grin softening into a gentle smile. As he shared his experiences and frustrations, she could sense the genuine sincerity in his voice and the raw emotions behind his words. It was a side of Simon she hadn't seen before, and it only deepened her curiosity and admiration for him.
Her hazel eyes sparkled with empathy as she nodded along. Delilah admired Simon's honesty and vulnerability, appreciating his willingness to share his true self, beyond the surface-level image he projected.
When Simon finished speaking and chuckled nervously, Delilah's smile widened, a playful glimmer returning to her eyes. She leaned slightly closer, her voice laced with warmth and sincerity.
"Simon, you didn't go deep, you went real. And that's something I appreciate. It takes courage to open up and share your true feelings. Trust me, I've seen enough fake smiles and shallow conversations. So, thank you for being you."
Delilah's response held a sense of genuine connection and understanding, her own vulnerability mirroring Simon's. She was genuinely interested in his story, in the layers beneath the facade he presented to the world.
As for his random question about her belonging in Gryffindor, Delilah's grin returned full force. She leaned back, crossing her arms and tapping a finger against her chin.
"I must admit, I've often wondered about that myself. Gryffindor is known for bravery, courage, and selflessness. But if I'm being honest, I don't always see those qualities in myself."
She paused for a moment, gathering her thoughts. Delilah was not one to boast about heroic acts or showcase chivalry, she wouldn't fight or risk herself to help someone or get out of her way to save them. She can be mean to other people without realising it if she wasn't careful with her carelessnes which she is still working on.
With a thoughtful expression, she began to respond. "You know, Simon, I've often wondered why I was sorted into Gryffindor. I'm not the type to charge into battle or perform daring feats of heroism. But I've come to realize that being a Gryffindor means more than that. It's about being true to your convictions, even if they go against the grain. It's about standing up for what you believe in, even when it's challenging."
Delilah's gaze met Simon's, her eyes reflecting her sincerity. "For me, being a Gryffindor means finding the courage to be authentic, to embrace my own individuality, and to treat others with kindness and respect. It's about being true to myself and standing up for what I believe is right, even in the face of uncertainty. I may not fit the conventional mold of a Gryffindor, but I believe that bravery can be found in the smallest acts of compassion and staying true to who you are."
As with Simon, Delilah thought he already looked like a Ravenclaw and had the qualities of a Ravenclaw, he was clever, kind and she never thought he was a Professor's pleaser. Not that she was fully awake through her classes to pay attention to him.
Delilah's expression turned thoughtful as she considered a serious question to ask Simon. She took a moment to compose herself before speaking with genuine curiosity, "Simon, what do you think is the most important quality a person can possess? What values or characteristics do you believe truly define a person's worth?"
