History / Background StoryReducioFlore has always been alone. She did have some friends here and there but none of real importance, no one to share all her secrets with, not since her brother had died. He was her best friend, and although they would fight a lot, he was always there for her when she needed it. He was only a year older than her and therefore they had always experienced everything together. That day, they were playing football, just the two of them, when she kicked the ball too far and he had to go get it in the middle of the street. It was a truck against an 9-year-old boy. After that, her life went sideways.
At school, the social butterfly that everyone knew became a sad, quiet girl. No one tried to help her, but then again nothing could have helped, the only thing she wanted was her brother and that was the only thing she wasn't getting back. Her family was shattered, her parents were saddened just by looking at her. They had never been really present for their kids and losing one just made that worse. Her house was always empty, but it was better that way. When her parents would come home from work all you could hear was either cries or fights. That's when she started a lot of activities like music, sports (hockey mostly), and anything really to keep her busy.
When she experienced her first instance of magic, at the age of 9, all she could think about was that he brother should have been there, should have lived that life-changing moment with her. It was only a year after his death and her parents had dragged her to a dinner with some friends in Wexford, only 2 hours from their house in Dublin. The little girl got in a fight with her mother on the ride over, it started by just complaining about the dinner they were going to and ended up with very hurtful reproaches to her parents (their tendency to care more for work than for her). But all that was put under the rug once they arrived at their destination. The Barbers had met Flore's dad at Hogwarts when he was a student there, so they were themselves, wizards. They started the evening with drinks and the child stayed quiet the entire time but when her mother mentioned how ungrateful her daughter was, Flore couldn't take it. She stood up, and started to rant, half-yelling at her mother but all everyone could concentrate on was every glass breaking without anyone touching them, one after the other. When the girl was done, she herself noticed the mess she had made. Instead of being mad, everyone was just excited to witness her first experience with magic.
After that her parents started concentrating on her more, helping her understand the world she was going to grow up in. They liked to talk about their experiences at Hogwarts (for her father) or at Beauxbatons (for her mother). They had finally found something to distract them from their loss.
When she learned she was gonna have to change schools she saw an opportunity to leave all that sorrow behind her. Flore could never forget her other half but maybe she could start to live without it and Hogwarts was the place to do that.
