It's an educational opportunity.
That's how Dora reasoned staying up so late, here in the Astronomy Tower. Tonight will be the peak of the Lyrid Meteor Shower, and she's one of a group of students gathered on the observation deck to watch it. The Professor is supervising, of course, having given everyone permission to stay up past curfew for this. Admittedly, Dora went back and forth on whether or not to attend. It's not extra credit, and staying up this late could impact her schedule tomorrow. But, it is a once-a-year event, and experiencing it could add to her astronomical knowledge.
Mostly, Dora just wanted to see it happen.
Her black notebook and quill clasped in hand, Dora looks up into the night sky. It's clear of clouds, and the chill in the air has her adjusting her robes for warmth. The meteors are supposed to fall from a specific constellation, Lyra. Orpheus' lyre, in Greek Mythology, that he used to charm the king and queen of the Underworld in order to save his lost love. She donated that story at the Book event last month. Dora wonders if anyone ended up reading it. She thinks it's a lovely tragedy, and now it's connected to a real, beautiful phenomenon.
It should be starting soon. There's some other students around Dora, distracting her a little from watching. She gets nervous in groups like this. Maybe someone she knows is here, though.

Let the Stars Fall

It could be just one of the usual days when Linda would sit in the common room after lessons and then go to sleep as usual. Except that this time she was going to be looking at the Meteor Shower as one of the students in the group that was allowed by Professor to be in the observation desk.
It most likely will be kinda cold, so Linda decided to wear a purple shirt under her robes. She also didn't want her hair to bother anyone including herself, so she put them in a braid. Now she was ready to go, beside it was already time for her to go there if she didn't want to be late.
She went out of her room and went to the Astronomy Tower. There already was someone she knew. Dora from Hufflepuff. That's nice, not that she came here to talk a lot with someone, but it's always a bit more nice to be with someone already known.
"Hi, Dora. A bit windy here, yeah? It's gonna be nice to look at Meteor Shower." Linda smiled while she was coming closer to Dora. She also had sketchbook with her as she wanted to draw it to be able to look at it later and maybe even share later with others.
She knew it will surely make her sleepy, stay awake so late. But this was worth it. She looked at the sky preparing her sketchbook. Even though it might be noisy, Linda didn't care about it.

Maverick had had a hard day the day before, so hard that it was impossible for him to attend the interscholastic spring dance. As a matter of fact, it had involved a broom accident and he ended up in the Hospital Wing, staying in said place overnight. It was not a bad experience per se (the staying overnight part, not the accident part), but it was embarrassing.
Tonight was a welcomed change. Ever since he was five or so, the Gryffindor had always wanted to watch meteor showers, but unfortunately his parents would either tell him to wait until he was older or inform him the surroundings of their house was too bright that it made one difficult to see the meteorites in the sky. Now was finally his chance.
When the preteen boy arrived at the Astronomy Tower, Professor Baird was there, as expected. There were also two other students not counting himself. After giving the Astronomy teacher a polite nod, Maverick shot a glance at both pupils. One of them looked rather gloomy to him, and he thought she should have opted for a shorter hairstyle - longer ones did not match thin hair like hers. The other seemed more cheerful, but he did not like her hairstyle, either.
No, no one was satisfactory enough to please his forest green eyes.
The part-Veela shrugged, giving the two girls a nod before sitting down, waiting for the shower to start. He would not bother starting a conversation with them unless he was spoken to or something interesting (or terribly dumb) took place.

Interacting with @Linda Ramirez and @Maverick CastleDora yawns, this whole thing being past her usual bedtime. Behind her, she hears someone say her name. "Hi Dora." She turns to see a girl with braided red hair who looks familiar. Oh right, they met in the library when Courtney had that accident. The Gryffindor comes right up to her with a smile, continuing. "A bit windy here, yeah? It's gonna be nice to look at Meteor Shower."
She nods shyly, trying to recall her name. "Yes. Linda, correct?" Dora asks, and pulls her robes tighter. It is quite windy up here. Maybe she should have tied back her hair too, it's probably going to blow all about. Tucking it back, Dora thinks of what to say. "Um.. the stars are nice tonight." Great small talk.
There's another boy arriving, looking her over and giving a quick nod before sitting down. She turns away nervously, looking around the observation deck. There aren't many people here, or maybe they just haven't arrived yet. Dora would've thought more people would be interested in a meteor shower like she is. Maybe it's silly to be so excited..
Well, if there are more people, hopefully they come before they miss it. Even now, Dora looks up at the sky, searching for falling stars. Then, in the blink of an eye, she sees it. A glimmer of white streaking across the sky. Forgetting the others, she sucks in a breath and mutters, "It's here." Dora brings up her notebook and opens it.

Let the Stars Fall

Linda saw one more person coming to the Astronomy Tower. It was kinda sad others didn't join yet, but after all she came here for Meteor shower.
"Right. Stars are nice always, but today especially." Linda smiled while agreed with Dora. It would be certainly nice to know each other more. They surely had some things in common.
"It's so nice to be here now waiting for this special event." Linda smiled enthusiastically. More as as a way to say thank you to Dora and to show her that it was okay to be that excited about Meteor shower coming.
It was then when Linda noticed that stars are starting to fall. Getting out of her thoughts she focused enthusiastically on the sky. She wanted to remember everything about it since she surely wouldn't draw it right now. Though she could. Linda already became good enough in drawing to sketch without looking at paper. But she wanted to focus more on the sky now.
"It just starts but it's already so nice." She said quietly. She felt for a while a bit sad that others didn't come yet, but hopefully they still would be able to see it.
She noticed that Dora opened her notebook, but she still decided to keep hers closed just yet.

Interacting with @Linda Ramirez"Right. Stars are nice always, but today especially. It's so nice to be here now waiting for this special event." Linda's enthusiastic response is warm, letting Dora relax a little. She wasn't really expecting to talk with anyone tonight, but Linda's sweet, so she doesn't mind. Anyways, it's still a pretty private affair. Dora doesn't mind that.
When the meteors start falling, and Dora takes out her notebook, she still just stands there for a moment watching in awe. A rare smile appears on her face, and she hears Linda beside her say, "It just starts but it's already so nice." Dora nods, agreeing wholeheartedly. It's beautiful.
Well, time to focus. This is educational, after all, or Dora wouldn't have allowed herself up so late. Maybe some notes will benefit her class performance.
She writes,To help her remember, she illustrates a meteor's path in her notebook, drawing the constellation with a line coming from it. It's not very good, though, she thinks with a frown. Nothing like the real thing.'The meteors trace lines across the sky. White paths that linger for a few moments then disappear. A new meteor appears about every minute. They stem from the constellation Lyra.'
Dora notices Linda also has a notebook with her, though she hasn't opened it. "Er, are you going to take notes, too?" Dora asks quietly, hoping not to disturb the boy sitting behind her.

Now was starting the moment why Linda was here at night. While Dora already was taking notes, Linda allowed herself to focus more on how it looks, how happens, all movement and every detail she could just notice.
She heard Dora quietly ask about notes. "I'm going to draw it. It's gonna be helpful and just I could show others as my family for example. Maybe after that I'll do some notes as well, but sketch should be already enough to give all information that might be necessary." She answered with a smile. This drawing will be enough to remember and see everything that might be useful for Astronomy. She felt great that she was not the only one thinking to learn something from this event.
After that she opened her notebook and sketched the sky, taking beginning of Meteor shower and following till the end. She made it in action so it will look like they are actually falling even on drawing.
After that she colored it accordingly to real thing as she could see. She was still looking at sky every second as to not miss anything. It was very important and she completely forgot to keep conversation somehow. But Dora was taking notes now so maybe it was good time to be silent a bit.

Interacting with @Linda Ramirez"Ah." Dora replies, nodding slightly. It's true, she probably doesn't need to be taking extensive notes. Her sketch is probably more than enough information to be able to remember the shower.
After their short exchange, Linda starts sketching in her own book. They're standing close to each other, so Dora can see it the next time she looks over at Linda. It looks very good, much better than Dora's measly lines. She even brought supplies to color it in, and with every stroke, it looks more and more like the real thing. Dora thinks of complimenting her on her skill, but Linda looks very focused. She doesn't want to break her concentration.
'No, no, she probably doesn't want to talk.' Dora thinks, looking away bashfully. They might be familiar, but that doesn't mean Dora can act like they're friends. Besides, she should be paying attention to the meteors, not making idle chit chat.
The stellar display takes Dora's mind away from her embarrassing attempts at social interaction, and she starts thinking of the other myths the constellations remind her of. Lyra the lyre belongs to Orpheus, but Apollo also plays the lyre. And before him, the mischief god Hermes invented the instrument. There's so many stories that the stars remind her of, and Dora wonders what the ancient Greeks and Romans and everyone else thought of these streaks of white light, falling across the sky. Did they think the gods were falling out of the heavens?
Dora yawns and checks the time. She wishes she could stay up all night watching, but she does need to sleep. Scribbling down a few more notes, she closes her notebook and decides to head back to her dorm. Before she goes, she offers a quiet farewell to Linda. "Good night." She says, and collects her things.

Linda was sketching and looking at Dora. She probably thought to talk but didn't say anything. Linda thought about it for a second and continued sketching. She did it as usually quite realistically. I will give you a copy of it later. As a gift and thank you. I know we don't know each other much, but you became like a good friend to me. Linda said smiling at Dora as the girl was taking her final notes. It didn't matter that they weren't friends at least yet. Linda already felt about Dora as a friend. She was really nice and caring. Kind and ready to help. All these qualities were enough to be as a good friend in Linda's opinion. She already was finishing her sketch when Dora said her farewell while still collecting her things. If you want, we can go out of Astronomy tower together. I finished my sketch. And good night. Linda made final movements and collected all her things. It was already very late and she wanted to sleep. But it was worth staying up so late today. It was really awesome time and Linda thought she would search for next meteor shower date to look st it again. Now she went to the way of her dorm. |

Before she leaves, Linda must notice Dora's glances at her work. Linda gestures at the page and smiles. "I will give you a copy of it later. As a gift and thank you. I know we don't know each other much, but you became like a good friend to me."
Dora stops, surprised and speechless. Regaining her voice and a blush tinges her pale skin, Dora replies, "That.. That would be lovely." She's not sure whether she means the drawing, or the offer of friendship, or both, but for whatever reason that seems like the appropriate response. Dora's not used to making friends so easily, or having the offer given so freely. Growing up, she didn't so much as have friends as have family acquaintances. Some were nice, but distant. Others weren't so nice, and teased her. She never felt like a good fit for any person.
Maybe that's still true. She doesn't see why Linda wants her as a friend after so little time, and yet she seems so sure of herself. Dora envies that.
"If you want, we can go out of Astronomy tower together. I finished my sketch. And good night." Linda offers, and Dora nods without thinking. Her head protests, but her heart would like to remain in Linda's company a little longer.
"I want to thank you as well." Dora says as they exit the tower together. "For the drawing, and.. for the company."
Linda is vibrant, like the stars and the meteor shower. Dora feels more like the darkness of the night sky. And yet, like tonight, they seem to accentuate each other. A strangely good fit on a good night.
