Potion | Wit-Sharpening Potion
Ingredients required | Ginger Roots, Scarab Beetles, Armadillo Bile, Newt Spleens, Water (Aguamenti or Tap)

Roleplay (200 words min) |

Dee set one last jar back into the shelf and rolled her shoulders, sighing contentedly. It was getting late, approaching curfew, and the classroom was empty aside from her. There wasn't even the occasional rustling and muttering from Professor Regan's office that was usually audible when the professor was around; perhaps she wasn't. It was with a cunning look and a knowing smile that Professor Regan had allowed Dee access to the potions facilities even when she herself wasn't around, a result of Professor Wickham-Deakin putting in a good word for her when the new professor of Potions had arrived, and Dee didn't intend to break either of their faith.

Still... the classroom was peaceful at this time, and Dee couldn't resist the opportunity. She still had almost an hour, a quick potion would be done in time. Dee plucked her textbook from her bag, leafing through it slowly, until she found one that would do.

Stretching slightly, she moved over to a different shelf, then picked up the necessary ingredients for Wit-Sharpening Potion... that might just come in handy. Ginger, scarab beetles, armadillo bile, and newt spleens, none of those were particularly fancy. She still made a mental note to replace them later. Additionally, she fetched a measuring cup, then pointed her wand at the opening and muttered "Aguamenti," watching as the cup filled to the 12 fl. oz. mark.

Picking out one of the less dented cauldrons from the classroom's equipment - one that she knew heated evenly, which was important - she set it on one of the burners and turned the heat on low.

It needed to be hot when she added the first ingredients, so she left it on the flame while she peeled and sliced the two ginger roots, going along with the fiber, the cuts clean and precise. No matter her lack of talent for most things kitchen related, her affinity for potions had ensured she knew her way around a knife. The slices were all of even length and thickness, agreeing with the measurements given by the recipe.

Quickly checking with her book, she counted the scarab beetles into her mortar, then got to work with the pestle, grinding them down thoroughly into an even powder. It was a practiced motion, at this point, she'd spent hours and hours spending many different things into powders of different grain.

She had less experience scoring newt spleens, but checked her knife's sharpness, then let it gently glide along the tiny spleens' surface, keeping the distance between the cuts even and the cuts themselves shallow. After a moment, she decided to add a cross pattern... who knew, maybe it would make the potion more potent?

With everything prepared, she checked the heat of the cauldron, then let all three spleens drop onto the hot metal, where they immediately started sizzling. Checking her watch, she flipped them after two minutes, then measured off 6 fluid ounces of water, prepared for another two minutes to pass. A hiss sounded as she poured it in along with a cloud of steam, but Dee, unperturbed, only turned to retrieve the ginger root slices and added half of them to the mixture, as well.

The next step was to stir slowly and evenly around the clock, and she peered into the cauldron, watching for the characteristic colour change. It didn't take too long for the liquid to take on a lime green hue, and she poured in half of the armadillo bile without hesitation, then resumed stirring, this time counterclockwise. After a moment, the potion started turning blue, and a moment later, it was ready for the prepared scarab beetle powder. Another 4 ounces of water needed to be added after, then the stirring resumed, while the potion slowly bled from blue into red.

There was a short break for her to clean her mortar and pestle, already beginning to tidy up things that wouldn't be needed anymore. Her mother had drilled into her the importance of keeping her work space clean, and those habits kicked in... plus, she was approaching curfew, and wasn't sure Regan would support her story if she claimed to have been running an errand for her. After three minutes, half of the remaining armadillo bile went into the cauldron in a clean arc, then once again, the potion required slow stirring against the clock. Dee breathed a relieved sigh as it brightened into a yellow; while she might have been able to save it otherwise, it was better that she didn't have to try.

The ginger root that still remained on her cutting board was added to the concoction, and Dee stirred clockwise, having to fight to keep the movements slow and even. She was getting impatient. Finally, when it was once again a bright lime green colour, she added the remainder of the armadillo bile, then counted slowly in her head while stirring counterclockwise to keep an even pace. All that stirring had her arm aching. Perhaps she should start working out more often.

Thankfully, it didn't take too much longer until the potion turned into the pearly white it was supposed to be, and Dee heaved the cauldron off the burner with a sense of relief.

She waved her wand above the mixture, then left it to cool slightly while she quickly and efficiently tidied up the other traces of her work, before bottling it into the handful of prepared vials. Perhaps she could hand one of them in for extra credit? But for now she'd have to hurry, or rely on her ability to talk herself out of detention.

Potion | Bruise Removal Paste

Yet another day of potion-making. I may or may not have been getting used to this, but I was going to try something more difficult to challenge myself, the bruise removal paste. The ingredients had cost a ridonculous amount of money, so I was determined to get this one right. Not that I hadn't gotten the other one right, I had, but I was more so determined this time, especially since this potion was a lot more complicated, so I'd have to be more attentive to what I was doing.

Setting up my little tin cauldron once again, I read the recipe while sorting out all the ingredients. There were a lot of thickening substances, since this was a paste, so I'd have to watch for that too. Now to continue on my quest for successfully brewing all the potions I can. I put the cauldron on "medium flame", which I guess meant "not too warm, not too scorching, but juuuust right" in a sense. Next was to heat on medium flame for 10 minutes.

What the difference between to heat it and put it on flame was, I don't know, but I decided to try. 10 minutes later, I placed 3 slimy Murtlap Tentacles in the cauldron, reminding myself to wash my hands really well after this whole thing was over and done with. I added a whole jar of honey to the potion too, probably to make the potion itself more like a paste instead of a liquid that you had to ingest, like the other potions.

I then stirred the potion clockwise 5 times, and then I took the cauldron off the fire as the recipe called for. Then, gritting my teeth and holding my nose, I carefully measured and added two fluid ounces of the bubotuber pus. It smelled awfully like gasoline, ugh! I couldn't get it in quick enough. After that, I stirred the potion 3 times counterclockwise and set the cauldron back on the medium fire. I waved my wand and put the cauldron on low heat.

I was supposed to let it simmer for a whole hour, so I leaned against one of the desks in the Potions classroom, pulled out "Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them", and started reading. About an hour later, I looked at the potion again. It was ready for the next steps. Using a mortar and pestle, I smashed the 6 seashells into a powder and then I carefully added 3 pinches of the powder into the cauldron, dusting my hands on my robes.

I added 2 measures of the flobberworm spit to the potion. It was gross, but at least it didn't smell like gasoline. I put the heat back on and started to stir the potion clockwise. It was sort of like mixing batter for pancakes, I thought, a job I was familiar with, so I would know when it was finished. I mixed for around 10-15 minutes or so, I'm not very sure, until it finally became harder to stir, and I realised the potion was no longer liquid. Woohoo!

I waved my wand once again, turned off the heat completely and let the paste cool down. A while later, I carefully bent down over the potion, trying not to breathe on it. It didn't seem hot, so I opened up a tiny jar that looked like one of those containers that held acne cream, and then I scooped up the thick yellow paste from inside the cauldron and filled the little round jar. I wiped my hands on my messy robes and screwed the lid onto the jar. Whew! Another job well done!

Potion: Pet Tonic
Ingredients: Aloe Vera leaves, Murtlap Tentacles, Salamander Blood, Scurvy Grass, Dried Nettles
Roleplay:

Reducio
One of the best decisions Amadea made in her entire Hogwarts career was adopting her owl, Nova. Originally, purchasing Nova had been partially a logistical choice. She figured that having an owl to send messages to her family back in Camberley would make the communication process much easier. It wasn't that she previously didn't like owls, but she always thought of herself as the more generic pet owner, like a dog or a cat. But Amadea had decided to adopt an owl, and it was the best decision she had ever made. Nova was her best friend, and something about the way that she looked deeply into Amadea's eyes when she talked to her made Amadea feel like her owl could understand what she was saying. That was why Amadea found herself in the classroom late at night, poring over her potions textbook as she began making a Pet Tonic. The cauldron had been preheating, so Amadea reached for the first ingredient.

It made sense to Amadea that aloe vera made up a key component of this potion; even in the Muggle world, aloe vera was deemed a healing ingredient that was used to 'cure' many ailments. She took a knife and began slicing the leaves lengthwise, allowing the gel to seep out. She then placed all of the leaves into the heated cauldron. Next, she measured out 8 fl. oz. of salamander blood and poured it clockwise over the sliced leaves. As the liquid settled, she sprinkled a handful of dried nettles on top of the mixture.

Clocking the time so she would know exactly when 2 minutes were up, she picked up the knife she had been using earlier to chop up 3 bunches of murtlap tentacles into small chunks. Somehow, she had timed the chopping perfectly, so as soon as she was finished, she dropped the bunches into the cauldron along with a singular bunch of scurvy grass. The next step was the longest and most tedious. She had to simmer the mixture for another 46 minutes, but stir once clockwise every 2 minutes. Amadea didn't mind the brewing time of potions normally, but she often had periods of time where the potion was supposed to be left unattended. Unfortunately, this time she had to stir once every 2 minutes, which made multitasking much more difficult. She had brought some of her other work to do in case there was some downtime while she waited for the brewing, but it appeared as though she would spend the next hour counting instead.

To Amadea's surprise, the time passed quickly, and she soon found herself completing the last stir. With one last step to go, Amadea waved her wand over the potion to seal it and then began transferring it into glass vials. Satisfied with her work, Amadea cleaned up the workspace and excitedly hurried to the owlery to give Nova some of the tonic. Hopefully she had brewed it perfectly and her owl would feel well enough to deliver a letter soon.

Potion | Dogbreath Potion
Ingredients required | 3 fluid ounces of Fire Whiskey, 3 Bat Spleens, 1 Fire Seed, 1 Valerian Root
Roleplay (200 words min) |

WC: 528
Reducio
Once again, I found myself back in the Potions classroom to brew another potion. This one was pretty cool; it was called the Dogbreath Potion, and it could make you breathe fire. This one wasn't too complicated, but I hoped it wouldn't take too long anyway. I gathered my things and put them in the front of the classroom in front of one of the first desks, and then I started to set up the little tin cauldron once again.

I got 10 fluid ounces of tap water and quickly poured it inside the cauldron, then moved on to the next step. I got a knife and started cutting up 3 bat spleens(ew)into neat chunks and added them to the cauldron. Then I carefully stirred the potion clockwise one time. I gingerly picked up a fire seed for the next part and immediately regretted it. "Ah! Ooh! OUCH! AAH!" The Fire Seed was white hot, and it landed on a desk. I sucked air through my teeth and wiped my scalded hands with my robes.

Guess I should've paid attention to the name, and also the fact that it said that I had to wear protective gloves for this operation. Sighing, I pulled on a pair of the gloves and reminded myself to either rinse my hands really well or make a Burn Healing Paste after this...I picked up the Fire Seed and dropped the evil demon of a seed into the cauldron. Oh, I'm such a fool...I looked at the potion recipe again and looked at the cauldron. I had to wait 5 minutes for it to start boiling, I then I could carry on.

After waiting semi-impatiently for 5 minutes, I gave the potion a single clockwise stir and used a ladle to steadily pour 3 fluid ounces of Firewhiskey into the cauldron. I'd always wanted to try Firewhiskey, but my mum would kill me if I ever drank alcohol. I probably will, though. After adding the Firewhiskey, I started to stir the potion clockwise. The recipe had said to stir it until the potion was burning from blue flame.

Wary of the heat, I began to stir the potion for a while until I realised it was burning and immediately took out the ladle. I looked back at the recipe and waved my wand over the cauldron, and then let the potion just go ahead and burn for about 2 minutes, or 120 seconds, while I quickly chopped up the Valerian Root into neat little pieces, then tossed them in. The potion had stopped burning, so it was safe for me to stir twice counterclockwise and wave my wand to complete the now purple potion.

I wiped my forehead with a handkerchief. I wondered if I should've stuck with something that wouldn't make me spit fire, because that potion sure was. And then I remembered my burnt hands. I pulled off the protective gloves and sighed. They were raw and reddened, and I was too lazy to try and make a Burn Healing Paste or something. I'd probably go to the hospital wing instead, but at least that taught me a lesson...always read the fine print. Always.

It was a dark and stormy night at Hogwarts castle when Donald Fish, a young Hufflepuff boy, began his newest creation. Lightning flashes would occasionally illuminate the courtyard, but the boy with his cauldron sat under a cover to avoid the direct rainfall. Wind gusts clapped at the loose robes and threatened to knock over phials of ingredients sitting nearby. A clatter of glass could be heard as the empty ones rocked back and forth into each other at each new breath of the storm.

"A bit of Bedllium into the mortar, and smash!" he cackled over the boom of thunder and the whistle of the wind.

Aggressive mashing and stirring came until it was ground up proper. Donald took a careful spoonful measure before flicking it into the cauldron. He repeated the process with a chamomile leaf from the vial for it next. Squish, grind, dump. It was in. Heating elements were for amateurs. So he had one with him. Incendio not required, but he cast one into the air just for effect as he began to heat up the concoction.

"...24... 25!" The redheaded Hufflepuff counted out loud before letting it cool.

Lightning struck close by in the valley, providing spectacular light for a moment and a cacophony of sound as he cackled, pouring in two measures from his standard ingredient box. The heat returned, and he waved his wand over the mixture before letting it brew for a whole hour. The storm was beginning to fade a bit, so Donald was losing his dramatic scenery, but he pushed ahead with lighter rain and winds providing less of a vibe.

With less dramatic ceremony, and no cackling, he added the next bit of standard ingredient, pushed the head up high for a couple of minutes, then added the sprigs. The last steps were to stir it thrice counter clockwise and then once clockwise. Then a little wand wave, bam, personal potion.

"Aha, I think it worked." Donald said proudly, leaning in to smell it. "Wait I shouldn..." He stifled a big yawn and rubbed at his eyes.

"I guess a nap..." He curled up next to his finished potion in the cauldron. "...won't hurt."

When the sleeping idiot woke up later, the storm would be faded in place of a sunny early evening sky. Now, he'd be able to fill up a potion vial for his new drowsiness draught, knowing it worked well.

I was determined to try and brew one more potion, since I had sort of gotten into it by this point. I may not be the next great potioneer, but I saw myself as decent. However, I was going to make a different kind of potion this time. The Forgetfulness potion, and what it does says it right on the tin. I peeked into the Potions Classroom once again to check if it was empty(it was), and then I got to work, setting up everything in my usual spot.

I gently put up the little tin cauldron and placed my ingredients on a desk, counting them all to make sure I had the right amounts. A couple drops of Lethe River Water, 2 sprigs of the Valerian plant, a couple measures of Standard Ingredient, and 4 mistletoe berries. They were all here! I looked at the recipe card for the first instruction. I took the Lethe River Water first and carefully added two drops of it to the cauldron.

After starting the potion, I gently heated it up for about 20 seconds, counting the seconds away in my head. When that was done, I put in the 2 Valerian sprigs, then began to stir the potion clockwise 3 times. After that was done, I waved my wand and then decided to let the potion simmer for about 50 minutes. In that time, I decided to go ahead with the mortar and pestle, adding in 2 measures of the Standard Ingredient and the 4 mistletoe berries.

I smashed them into a semi-fine powder and put a couple of pinches into the cauldron. Then I began to carefully slow the potion 5 times counterclockwise, and then I finally waved my wand to complete the potion. That was it? I had actually expected the potion to be a little more complicated than that, but I guess not. That was actually quite easy! I looked inside the cauldron at the now finished potion, which had turned the colour red. That hadn't been so bad!

She could hear sniffling. It was quiet and hidden, but Bea could hear it. Dressed in sombre all black, Bea could hear the wake still going on in parts of the house. But Bea didn’t care about that. The clear noise of upset and emotion had piqued Beatrices curiosity. Keeping her ears open, she stood in front of her Nans study door. The noise was coming from inside. As Bea turned the worn doorknob, the sniffling stopped.

Opening the door fully, she stood in the doorway and watched her Ma slice up potion ingredients. Tears were streaming down her face like when she cut up onions for cooking. But there was no onion on the wooden chopping board. Only a bloody trail left behind by the crocodile heart. There was a fine powder already in the mortar, which Bea guessed was the lavender and chamomile petals by the colour. Which was denied when her mother waved her over with a sniff, “Come and help me Beatrice. You can add the powder. Two measures of standard ingredient. No not heaped. Exact.” Bea felt hands knock the measuring utensil until her first scoop was even. “Just like that.” Doing as her mother asked, she wordlessly put in the powder measures.

No wonder she hadn’t been able to find her mother for so long. She’d been in here brewing this potion. Her mother turned to her, her eyes red and puffy. She’d been crying for a while. “Do ye know what potion this is?” Bea looked around at the ingredients. Bloody chopping board. Peppermint and lavender sprigs littered across the table. Soft white petals lay crumpled amongst the sprigs. A poppy head lay next to the mortar, ready to be crushed. “Umm, a calmin’ draught.” Her Scottish accent was becoming thicker, more pronounced as emotion hit her. Was the potion for Ma? Or Ella who Beatrice had found huddled in the corner crying into the teddy Nan had given her last Summer. Her mother nodded, a small smile gracing her lips at her daughters knowledge.

Wordlessly she stirred the cauldron three times clockwise and then grabbed the poppy head. She placed it into the mortar and ground it into a rough powder. Still not talking, she placed the powder into the cauldron and turned up the heat for 40 seconds. All the while her mother watched, silent.Bea stirred the potion three times clockwise again then looked towards her mother. The woman picked up her wand off the table and waved it, completing the potion. Picking up the empty phials on the table, Bea poured the potion into the phials and handed one to her mother. The woman took it, smiling gratefully. Bea pocketed one for herself and another for Ella. Smiling wanly at her mother, she lent in for a hug before exiting the room, on the hunt for her sister.

Potion | Burn Healing Paste

3 Murtlap Tentacles
4 spoonfuls of crushed Seaweed
1 Jar of Honey
2 Measures of Flobberworm Mucus
1 Sprig of Dittany

Roleplay (200 words min) |
Reducio
Jack was often in need of Burn Healing Paste. He had been in need of it ever since he had started learning and practicing fire-dancing with Ruka in his first year. Back then, since Ruka had still attended Hogwarts with him, he could rely on Ruka who often carried the paste on him. Now, though, since Ruka had stopped attending, Jack was on his own. He needed to learn how to make his own paste to heal his burns when he practiced. In addition, one never knew when a Burn Healing Paste would come in handy due to the number of fires that tended to break out at the school and the number of people that ended up getting burned by them.

In order to make the healing paste, Jack first bought the ingredients. There were three murtlap tentacles, four spoonfuls of crushed seaweed, one jar of honey, two measures of flobberworm mucus, and one sprig of Dittany. Once he had everything, Jack went to the potions classroom during a time when class wasn't in session and set up his workspace. When that was finished, he began to prepare the paste.

To begin with, he added the three murtlap tentacles to his cauldron. Once that was done, he chopped the seaweed into small pieces as the recipe demanded. He then took those pieces and put them in a mortar to crush with a pestle until they were a paste. Since the seaweed wasn't dry, the moisture in it combined with the crushed plant and turned it into a paste. This was a long and tedious process, but at last it was done. It took a while to make enough for four spoonfuls, but once he had the correct amount, he added it to the cauldron along with the murtlap tentacles.

To mix the two ingredients, Jack stirred three times clockwise as instructed. Then he set the temperature to high heat and waved his wand over the mixture. When that was completed, he left it to brew for 33 minutes since the recipe said 25 to 40 minutes and Jack was something of a perfectionist. Since it didn't give him an exact number, he chose the middle between the minimum and maximum number of minutes. After that, the Slytherin turned off the heat completely.

Next, he added a whole jar of honey to the concoction in the cauldron. He stirred twice in a clockwise direction; the same direction as before. Then, putting the cauldron on low heat, he let the potion sit for 10 seconds. Two measures of flobberworm mucus found their way into the cauldron after that. Jack allowed the cauldron to continue to heat, assuming it was supposed to stay on low heat, while occasionally stirring clockwise. Eventually, the potion reached the consistency of a thick paste and he knew it was time to turn off the heat completely.

From there, Jack added the sprig of dittany to the cauldron, aware from his studies of the healing properties of the plant. He waited until it dissipated before waving his wand over the paste one more time, completing the process. Then, as it said in the recipe, he put the paste into an airtight jar for later use.

Potion | Murtlap Essence
Ingredients required |
3 Measures of Honey
1 Measure of Dried Nettles
12 Murtlap Tentacles
1 Graphorn Horn

Roleplay (200 words min) |
Reducio
Murtlap Essence, as a basic healing salve, was always good to have on hand in Jack's opinion. It could treat minor cuts and abrasions by not only healing them but relieving pain caused by them. It could even reduce the appearance of scars even if not prevent them completely. Collecting the ingredients, the Slytherin set out to make some just in case. After all, at Hogwarts, one never knew when one might need some.

In order to make three doses of Murtlap Essence, Jack needed three measures of honey, one measure of dried nettles, 12 murtlap tentacles, and one graphorn horn. In a cauldron he had previously made cold with the use of a Freezing Spell and water, he poured the three measures of honey as instructed by the recipe in his potion book. He then turned the heat up to a low simmer and added the measure of dried nettles to the mixture in the cauldron. Next, he stirred clockwise three times while making sure to stir gently.

Following that, he chopped up the 12 murtlap tentacles into coarse pieces and put them into the cauldron. Then it was time to wait for 25 minutes. While waiting, he got out the graphorn horn and began to grind it down until it was a fine powder. Fortunately he was able to do this within the 25 minutes because after that, it was time to add the ground-up horn powder to the cauldron. After that, Jack stirred once more, but anti-clockwise this time. Then he allowed the whole thing to simmer for another 10 minutes as he read he needed to do. When the 10 minutes were up, the teen waved his wand over the mixture once before immediately bottling and corking the hot liquid. And with that, he had three doses of Murtlap Essence.

Potion | Revive Potion
Ingredients required |
5 Murtlap Tentacles
3 Spines of Lionfish
2 Measures of Salt
5 drops of Essence of Wormwood
1 Sprig of Dittany

Roleplay (200 words min) |
Reducio
Potion-making was something Jack found a little dull if easy because he felt that all there was to it was following instructions from a recipe without any creativity being involved. Thus, in order to make things slightly more interesting, he decided to ask one of his dormmates, Hanako Tone, to join him in a competition to make a potion faster than the other. The potion he decided to base the competition on was the Revive Potion because he thought it was a rather useful thing to have for Hanako as a duelist and himself as an aspiring duelist. Before he decided to challenge Hanako, however, he thought it would be a good idea to do a test run first to see what he would need to do and figure out how he could improve his time to get faster.

The first thing to do was gather the ingredients. Five murtlap tentacles were required along with three spines of lionfish, two measures of salt, five drops of the essence of wormwood, and one sprig of dittany. That was simple enough. When all of those were gathered, Jack rolled up his sleeves and got the rest of his supplies out. He wanted to see what he could do in order to reduce the time the process took but without shortening the actual cooking time. With that in mind, he looked over the instructions in his potion book.

First he had to fill his cauldron with purified water. That was simple enough without needing any prior preparation. Then he had to chop up three of the five murtlap tentacles and add them to the water in the cauldron. Chopping those up as quickly as he could, he didn't bother making the pieces too small before dropping them in the water as the recipe didn't specify what size he had to chop them up into. After that, he had to allow the cauldron to simmer for five minutes, but that just meant he had time to prepare for the next step. He ground up the three spines of lionfish into a coarse powder, trying hard not to let his perfectionism get in the way when it came to griding them up because the powder didn't have to be fine, only coarse. The coarser he could allow it to be, the faster he could prepare it, but he still planned to use all five minutes of the time he had. Once that was up, he added the coarse powder to the cauldron and then included the two measures of salt he had.

With the powdered lionfish spines and salt added, next he was supposed to stir three times clockwise, so he did that quickly because there were no specifications as to how fast or gently he had to do it. He just needed to make sure he didn't spill. Then he added the five drops of essence of wormwood to the cauldron and, following that, the sprig of dittany. Once that was done, Jack stirred the cauldron rapidly five times in a counter-clockwise direction. After that, all that was left to do was wave his wand over the cauldron and fill the resulting potion into vials. Winning that challenge would be a piece of cake.

He took out all his ingredients and dumped them on the desk next to his cauldron. All those injuries during quidditch practice! -- he was sure he and his teammates needed a few doses of Murtlap Essence to ease any damage they took from practice. The season was tough, and they needed to be even tougher.

He put 3 measures of honey into the cold cauldron, and began to heat it until it was on a low simmer. He gave it a sniff -- nice and sweet! Even though he was a good multi-tasker and liked to do many things at once, he took it easy this time, knowing it was his first brew outside of class. Then, he added 1 measure of dried nettles to the cauldron, and stirred it gently clockwise for 3 times. Afterwards, he added 12 coarsely chopped Murtlap Tentacles to the cauldron. Perfect! Now he could allow the brew to simmer for 25 minutes.

During that time, he took out a parchment and began to do a couple questions of his potions homework, trying to be productive for once, grinding some graphorn horn when he got stuck on a hard question. After time was up, he added 1 measure of ground graphorn horn to his brew. He stirred once, anti-clockwise. Then, he allowed it to simmer for 10 minutes, completing another homework question as he did so. When time was up, he waved his wand over the mixture. Nice! He bottled up the liquid and corked it quickly. Task complete! He knew his team would appreciate it.

His friend Vale had been rummaging through the shrubs on the campus and surrounding grounds again. He wasn’t sure what she was usually looking for, but if it was poisonous, he knew he had to have a few doses of the Antidote to help her out in an emergency. He tossed his 1 bezoar into a mortar and began to crush it into a find powder with a pestle. Then, he added 4 measures of the crushed Bezoar to the cauldron. Avery also carefully measured 2 measures of the Standard Ingredient to his cauldron. That should be enough for now. He began to heat his cauldron at a medium temperature for 5 seconds. He picked up his wand and waved it.

There! He could finally take some time to make some progress on that page-turning crime novel he’d been reading! After 30 minutes, he checked the contents. Probably could use about 5 minutes longer. After that, he added 1 pinch of unicorn horn to his cauldron. He stirred the mixture 2 times, clockwise. Then, he added 2 mistletoe berries. Afterwards, he stirred the mixture 2 times, counter-clockwise. Finally, he waved his wand over the potion. Perfect! What a great brew!

Similar to how he brewed an antidote to common poisons, he decided it wasn’t enough. What if Vale were to get accidentally poisoned by vegetation or creatures using uncommon poisons? Surely, she had to be as prepared as possible on her little ‘expeditions’. He could give the doses to Vale when they were complete. He tossed 2 fire seeds into a mortar and roughly crushed them with a pestle until they broke into pieces that he tossed into the cauldron. Then, he split open 3 Chizpurfle carapaces and added them as well. He stirred the mixture 5 times, counter-clockwise. Afterwards, he added 2 Billywig Stings to the mortar and and crushed them into a fine powder, which he added to his cauldron. He stirred it 2 times, clockwise. Then, he waved his wand over the mixture. He set it to a low heat and let it brew 40-60 minutes, and decided that it looked good enough at 40 minutes. Then, he added 3 measures of powdered graphorn horn to the cauldron, and let it boil on high heat for 20 seconds. He took the cauldron off the flames. Avery stirred it 3 times, clockwise. Lastly, he waved his wand to complete the potion.

Avery had to admit, potion brewing was starting to grow on her. Having the physical fruit of your magical labor at the end of the endeavor was far more satisfying than she'd initially given it credit for at the start of the year. Especially when it actually turns out correctly. Which is precisely why she wanted to try her hand at another brew on her own time. The recipe she'd chosen didn't sound too difficult at least.

Splaying the supplies out before her, Avery sets her cauldron up and lays out the instructions to follow beside it. Skimming over the material one more time for good measure, she measures out 4 drops of the Lethe River Water and deposits it into the waiting cauldron. Turning to the bat spleens, the Hufflepuff does her best not to wrinkle her nose as she carefully dices both spleens to add to the growing concoction. It was a little gross, but she had unfortunate faith that there would be even worse to come over the years. They did get the job done, though, so couldn't argue results.

Stirring the mixture of watery spleens twice clockwise, she references the notes once more before cranking the heat on high. Milling about anxiously for the next 10 minutes, Avery hums quietly under her breath to try and pass the time. She made a mental note to try and bring along a book or homework next time for the inevitable downtime that accompanied brewing.

Once the 10 minutes finally pass, Avery is quick to lower the heat to a simmer and move on. Muttering a quiet 'ew' as she she adds a pair of eel eyes, she gives the mix another brief stir, switching directions for the two rotations. Already dreading the next step, three leeches are deposited in the mortar. In an effort to just get it over with, the pestle descends and she mashes the leeches into a disgustingly sticky paste. She doesn't look too closely at the end result before scooping out three spoonfuls and tossing them into the cauldron.

Avery retrieves the ladle and stirs the contents counter-clockwise another five times before setting the utensil aside. Referencing the instructions once more, she adjusts the heat towards somewhere in the middle and steps back. With the recipe advising leaving the contents to brew for anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes she figured it'd probably be fine more towards the low end of that estimation. Maybe with a few minutes leeway just in case.

Too restless to stay still, the next 17 minutes are spent slowly wandering about to try and find anything of even momentary interest. Avery doesn't waste any time making her way back over to the potion once she's deemed enough time has passed. She's about to lean over and directly peer into the contents before she decides better of it. Perhaps best practice to not directly inhale potion fumes in general. Instead, she pulls her wand out to finish the brew off and waves the tip over the top of the cauldron. The Hufflepuff carefully bottles the mixture up, a pleased smile making an appearance.
