THE NIGHT WAS A BLEAK, dreary mess, many times, loneliness followed suit. It was a time for the low purr of melancholic songs and it was a time claimed by night creatures, shadows, and terrible things. Yet, while an owl called somewhere, somewhere it wasn’t supposed to be; a house, a little 11-year-old girl thought otherwise. She thought the night was completely fine as it was, thank you, and she basked in its quietness, space to think, and lack of companionship — at least when she was working. She yearned for mornings when she wanted to push her thought away — the owl called again, its timbre deep, and rolling through the house.
“Wobble-wing, do you want out?” the girl asked after a few moments, pausing what she was doing to look up at the rather restless looking bird, calmly and earnestly; as if keeping an owl was completely normal.
The owl hooted once more in reply, and so the girl unlatched his cage and opened the window near her desk; providing his freedom until the first licks of morning light sprang from the horizon.
She began to work. On what? Perhaps school work? Maybe she was the studious kind? No, no, it was summer, and she didn’t have summer courses — so, what was it? Abruptly, a gentle scrape, scrape, scrape filled the room, perhaps suggesting her kitten was pleading for her attention, but her kitten was fast asleep. Another set of scrape, scrape, scrapes followed suit and the young girl, upon further inspection, was, in fact, carving. Her abilities suggested she did this regularly but was still somewhat new to the art. Some strokes of her knife leading to unwanted, choppy shapes and many, many bandages.
Her bandages varied in colour, from the lightest yellow to the blackest black, from characters, to patterns, to the standard beige. They covered her hands in great clusters, almost to the point there was nothing left to cut. But somehow, her knife slipped, and a new wound bloomed; a deep sanguine against all the many colours. She cleaned it quickly and plastered it over with a new bandage — all very quickly, as if, by now, it was nothing but a thing of her routine. Actually, all her movements seemed very fast, as if she was in a rush.
Her frizzy head was bent down, round frames scarcely hanging off her nose — she didn’t have a moment to waste to push them back up — her eyes never breaking away from the hunk of wood in hand, not even when she went to grab for a new bandage.
This was Mina Han, and Mina Han was, in fact, rushing. The carving that she held ever so firmly was one of two she promised her family; a promise because she was leaving by 11 am today. It wasn’t a permanent leave, but the 11-year-old girl knew nothing of a time where her family was not with her, so the knickknacks that lay beside her, waiting; was nothing of second nature for her to leave behind. The two that sit finished, by the look of things; were cats, the one she was working on was no different. The three of them were made so when together, they were to look as if they were playing side by side. All three of them had very large, pointed hats that nearly covered their eyes.
She was to make the fourth for herself when she arrived to wherever she was arriving, solely on the fact Mina Han was running short on time. It was nothing of a sort poetic.
You see, Mina had a running problem, and that was leaving things untouched unless she absolutely had to do it, a bad habit that started from bad beginnings. So, there she sat; 4:02 am when she was expected at Kings Cross at 11:00 am the same day. A train station Mina rather avoid if the circumstances were different, but today, today and for many years to come, she would push that fear as far back as she could. Because, Mina Han, was, in fact, a witch.
You may inquire; ‘what does that have to do with Kings Cross and its awful crowds?’ well, Mina was a witch and even witches needed to go to school. Kings Cross was where her train lay between platform 9 and 10. And though Mina was a witch, she didn’t figure out until she was aged 9 when she nearly fell down the stairs, saved barely by her magic. A few days following her incident, a Hogwarts representative decided to calm her ‘muggle’ parents from the sudden revelation; explaining everything of the wizarding world after her mother and them struggled with the door, only allowing them in after nearly 15 minutes of wrestling over the poor entrance. Hogwarts, the school the representative was from, would be her school in a few seven hours or so, and ‘muggle’ was the term used to describe her no-magic parents and sister.
Anyway, the time on her digital clock flickered 5:30, and she was done, her head in her arms, and her snores buzzing lowly throughout the room. Though her head burst with dark thoughts of anxieties; the ‘what ifs’, the excitement that formed butterflies at the bottom of her stomach, was a far better and stronger feeling. Her owl, Wobble-wing returned to his cage, the window wide open, but his calls hushed. Her kitten, Puppie, had moved places to her desk, cuddling against her, offering some small comforts.
✧ ✧
The first thing that greeted Mina Han in the morning was a harsh whisper of a voice. A familiar one, at that. And though harsh, there was a hint of playfulness sprinkled within it. The second thing that greeted her was the low purr of what she assumed was a small motor beside her.
It all took her quite long to process what was happening, only moving to bat away the hand that was now prodding at her side, letting out a few garbled, nonsensical murmurs before slipping back into a short sleep.
The voice said something once more, something far clearer than whatever they had said before: “If you don’t wake now, Mina, You’re gonna be late. It’s 9:00, there might be traffic.”
Almost instantaneously, her head sprung up with so much force it knocked over the carvings that lay beside her. "Min-Jeong! Why didn't you wake me up earlier?"
Puppie, the said motor, let out a disgruntled groan and leapt from her desk onto her lap.
Though her vision was blurry, as were her thoughts, Mina could make out her elder sister’s frame and processed that she was, in fact, grinning like an idiot — like the tamer version of the Cheshire cat, if you will.
“You looked so peaceful—I—I Just couldn’t! My heart wouldn’t let me— and gosh! You’re so messy… your room looks fresh out a barn — like grandparents’ barn — and you have wood chippings everywhere! I had to close your window earlier along with Wobble’s cage — is that our carvings? Where’s yours?”
Mina only processed nearly half of her rant, and responded only with simple yes’s and no’s.
Min-Jeong spared her a concerned look and gave her head a few gentle pats. “Hurry and get dressed, and give dad a letter with his carving. He likes that kinda thing. Sentiment and all that crap.” she waved her hands around at the last part, insinuating the ‘sentiment’ bit.
Mina nodded groggily, watching as her sister swung the door to a shut behind her with a reminder of, “Seriously, hurry, we don’t have time.”
By the time she was done, 20 minutes had passed; her hair still a mess, clothes scarcely making it to her body. She nearly forgot her glasses as well, remembered only by her kitten who was dragging the spectacles in her mouth, down the hall. Causing a very sleepy Mina half a heart-attack and a wave of ‘thank you’s’ from her mouth when she looked back. Wobble-wing’s cage lay between her arms, and the very neatly written letter, which she spent nearly all her 20 minutes on, between her pointer and middle finger. The carvings that were now packaged in small boxes, lay underneath Wobble-wing. The bird spared the carvings a quick, interesting look when she first, in a rush, shoved them in his cage, but never after that did he bother them.
Almost stumbling down the stairs in a hurry, she called, while Wobble-wing let out a few vexed hoots, “Mom, Dad, I’m down!” adding a faint, rushed, “Sorry for sleeping in,” when she thought to add it.
“Took you long enough,” she heard her mother’s reply, calm and at the slightest, playful.
In stark comparison, her father replied in an almost giddy, restless-like manner, jumping to his feet as she entered the hall.
“Great!” He exclaimed, grabbing Wobble-wing from her arms. But before he could strap the owl to the rest of her luggage, his eyes found the cluster of small boxes. An odd look fell onto his features before the realization washed over, “Are these ours?”
She nodded vigorously, “Yep!”
She unlatched Wobble-wing's cage door, gave him a gentle pat, and reached for the boxes. She handed the first one to her father, the second to her mother, and the last to her sister. Before her father could speak again, she handed him the letter and suggested they leave before they run even later.
✧ ✧
Before she knew it, they were facing the platform 9 and 10, and in complete shock and unknowing of how to not look absolutely out of place while she ran between them. Kings Cross was pretty congested when they arrived, only adding to the small, eleven-year-old girl’s woes. However, before she could even attempt to embarrass herself, her father pulled her into a large bear-like hug that almost engulfed her whole frame. He ended the hug after a while, with a pat to Mina’s head and mutterings of "don't do anything stupid," or "we'll miss yous," and "be safes." Her sister, on the other hand, gave her a sweet smile and two thumbs ups, her mother offered a wave, and a nod towards the platforms "Good luck, daughter."
She returned her mom's usual bluntness with a snort, waved back, and turned towards the platform. She felt eyes behind her and clenched the trolley’s handle until her knuckles turned white. The ‘what ifs’ from before returned, the dark feeling settling into her bones uncomfortably quickly. Puppie jumped onto one of the leather trunks tall enough to reach her hand and gave her bandaged fingers a few rough licks. Her kitten's presence let some of that terrible dark feeling dissipate, but her hands still begun to sweat profusely at the sight of the stupid wall. 'Okay Mina', she told her self, 'You've done stupider things, like that one time you trusted those people and jumped into the stream for your wallet even though they had it all those times... haha right, okay no big deal, you can run through a wall... you can do this, you can do this, you can do this, you can do this...'
Though the assurances of the 'times before' didn't assure her at all, and she still didn't attempt to run between the platforms, the only real assurance coming from her kitten who rushed to calm her down between licks, purrs, and her small head pressing against her hand.

Kat sat alone in his bed. In the dark of the night. He couldn't sleep. He couldn't even lie down. He simply sat up in his bed, staring at the blank wall in front of him. Kat listened to the soft ticking of his bedroom clock, as his mind racing.
His thoughts mostly consisted of Hogwarts, and magic as a whole. The noise in his head prevented him from sleeping, and the only thing it helped him at was keeping him awake.
Kat sighed, plucking a lollipop from a cup of candy he kept by his bed.
━━☆⌒*.
Kat rolled the lollipop around in his mouth as he shoved his belongings into the small leather trunk his parents had provided him with. He had tried every method of storing his items of clothing into this small trunk, and it still wouldn't close. Kat huffed, determined to close the trunk. Outside, the sky was gloomy and dark, and the only noise in the small apartment he and his mother lived in was the clock ticking impatiently, and Kat struggling with his luggage.
With a final shove, the trunk snapped closed, clicking into place. Kat sighed, running his hand through his curls before heaving the trunk to an upward position, with the lock facing up. He took his backpack, also stuffed to the brim with books of his choice and other personal belongings, and dropped that onto his trunk.
He had his school supplies all tucked neatly into a paper Macy's bag by his mom, because she had insisted that he save money by saving bags.
With all the supplies and material he needed packed, Kat stretched, picking them all up and rolling them all into the living room.
"Are you done?" His mother poked her head out of her room, her hair in a tight bun. Kat nodded, distant, and staring at the contents inside of his two Macy bags. His mother tightened her lips as she disappeared back into her room. By now, Kat's lollipop had whittled down into only the stick, so he chewed on it to distract himself. It would be a while before the sun came up, and he'd have to take the bus to Kings Cross.

Kat's mom was a witch. His dad opposed him going to school, or Hogwarts, so to say, so she was tense about bringing him. Yes, she liked the fact that Kat would be able to go, but, she didn't like the fact her husband was annoyed about this. Kat thought about this, and well, what if he wasn't a wizard of any sort? Would've he gotten a different start? Would've he been able to just believe that, his parents wouldn't have any sort of divide? Maybe if everything was normal, he could've stayed in Korea-
The freckled boy was pulled sharply out of his thoughts as the bus lurched, and stopped. He quickly gathered his things and stumbled out of the bus.
His lollipop stick was soft, but he kept it in his mouth. He was chewing on it because of pure nervousness, and his fingers tap-danced on the side of his trolley as he rolled it through the bustling station of Kings Cross.
Platform 9 and 3/4, between platform 9 and 10. Kat couldn't just run between the two, could he?
His mother hadn't provided any comfort either, from the ride to the bus stop.
Kat wheeled around Kings Cross for a while, struggling to even find the two platforms. When he did, the only thing he could make out was a girl, a trolley, and with no doorway, or anything, to the supposed 'Platform 9 3/4.'

“Hey, darling. Looking gorgeous, as usual.” Arnold Lixi commented over his cup of coffee as Reece climbed down the stairs, fashionable as always. “Thanks, Arn,” Reece bent down to pat Bailey, their three year old golden retriever on the head. “Where’s Reed?” She asked, realizing a couple seconds after she said it that that was a stupid question. “Sleeping.” Arnold answered, yawning. Reece entered the kitchen, grabbed a treat for Bailey, and ran upstairs. “Are you going to wake him up?” Arnold yelled as she made her way into the hall upstairs. “Yes. We have to leave soon.”
As soon as Reed blinked his eyes open, Reece got “let’s go” in and booked it back down. Grabbing her trunk she unlocked the front door. She waited five minutes outside next to the car, and Arnold and Reed stumbles out the door. Reed started the car, and they were gone, Reece mumbling goodbyes to her hometown under her breath.
At Kings Cross, Arnold and Reed hugged her goodbye, and Reece did the same for Bailey. Kissing each of them one more time, they helped her put her trunk on the express. “Goodbye, Reecey!” They yelled, Bailey barking beside them. Trying to ignore anxious feelings, she walked down the corridor trying to find a compartment and maybe even some new friends. She came across one with a nice looking girl in it, opened the door and asked, “may I join you?”

His mother, Alison barely had a chance to knock twice before he opened the door. "Already awake?" she asked. David nodded.
"I've been up for an hour already." He said. It was true, he had barely been able to fall asleep. Like a younger child on Christmas Eve waiting for Santa, he had been full of energy, although for him it stemmed form anxiety rather than enthusiasm. Not for the first time, the idea of backing out crossed his mind. His parents had assumed he would be excited to attend, but had made it clear that it was ultimately his choice.
His mother, he understood. She was a Ravenclaw graduate and was old enough to have experienced some pretty crazy things while she was in school. She had never gotten around to telling Dvaid what those stories were, and she could see the uncertainty flashing across his face.
"Hogwarts is perfectly safe, Davey," she reassured him, calling him by the nickname only she used. "They've been around for centuries and you can be sure that they've figured out how to teach students not to melt themselves with magic. There are children who attend that have parents that are both Muggleborn, so you won't be the only one experiencing a lot of new things."
There was that term again. Muggleborn. It meant having non-magic parents. David remembered hearing the term slip out from his mother from time to time as he was growing up, but he never really knew what it meant. He just assumed it was a swear word that only adults were allowed to use without being punished. Apparently not.
"I know Mom, it's just i feel like it's going to be a lot more difficult stuff to deal with," David said. Hogwarts was still a school. David was under the impression from his mother's stories that he'd still be going to classes and doing homework, the big difference being that he lived in the shcool this time. Also the magic was pretty different. He did really well at the school he went to last year and was ahead of the game on his Math, had already read the books they'd discuss next semester, and had even started his science project early.
All of that was going out the window. He'd be starting from scratch, basically. He'd already dug into his textbooks, reading Magical Theory and Hogwarts: A History within a couple days. It had been dense, and he had trouble processing all the information. The settings, the Terms, and even the names all seemed straight out of one of his fantasy books. But this was real. Hos mother had been doing magic regularly in front of him since he confessed to them the strange things that had been happening.
"You'll be fine Davey. Ravenclaw runs in your blood, you'll catch up in no time," His mother said. David grabbed his trunk and bag, packed the night before. He followed his mother out of the room, taking brief moments to look at everything one last time. He was surprised when his mom passed through the single floor home and led him straight out the front door, where he saw his father standing next to the trunk of their running car.
"We knew you'd be up, c'mon. Bring 'em over, His father said. His dad had always been super in-tune with everyone's routine, and David shouldn't have been surprised that he had anticipated the morning perfectly. His dad had been especially supportive of Dvaid ever since the acceptance letter had arrived. David had been raised normally, no, as a Muggle at his request, just in case David never demonstrated any magical ability. In this way he'd still be successful with his earlier schooling.
The trunks were in the back and David climbed into the car. The hours passed like minutes. He heard his parents talking to each other, but he wasn't processing any of it as he watched familiar sights of London pass by in a hazy blur. It felt like he was still supposed to be home when he found himself with a trolley approaching platforms 9 and 10.
"Remember Davey, the wall. Just act natural," His parents took a step back as the wall came in view. There was nothing natural about this, though! His mother insisted that he should go through the wall alone. The first decision he'd be making was whether or not he would actually enter the Magical World. He glanced around and saw other kids around his age standing near the wall, wheeling similar looking trolleys. Were they here, too? Were they just as nervous? Nobody seemed to be moving.
David took a deep breath. Everything he could feel inside was screaming at him that this was wrong, but there was something innate that was telling him to go through with this and drastically change his life forever. There would be no turning back. He started to walk towards the wall, trying his best to keep a neutral pace without attracting attention. Unfortunately, he was trying too hard to keep a neutral pace and looked a little odd. Thankfully no one seemed to notice as he pushed the cart against the wall and it slid past smoothly with no resistance.
He took several more steps and turned, seeing another solid looking wall behind him. This was it. He'd have to decide for himself how to proceed.

Neculai had found himself packing his trunk with his clothes and all the other equipment he needed to attend school. His father entered his room. The first thing he noticed was Neculai sitting on top of his biggest suitcase trying to get it to close as he saw that the boy tried to fit in some of his favourite books. "That won't work, son." He said amused. "You'll have to leave some of them behind, he saw the panicked look on Neculai's face, don't worry I think they'll have some more books in that school." Neculai looked from his father to the suitcase and then let out a sigh. "You're probably right, but its so hard to leave them behind. I don't know which ones I should take with me and which ones I should leave behind?" "Then perhaps you shouldn't take any with you? Leaves some room for you to talk to some of the other kids and to start making friends on your way to the school? Because I know you'll otherwise be too busy burying your nose in those books." His father remarked, whilst lifting his son of the suitcase. Which resulted in the suitcase bursting open and a couple of the books poured out. Together they returned the books to their rightfull place on the shelves. Once that was done his father urged Neculai to come downstairs and spend some time with his mother before leaving.
When Neculai arrived downstairs his mother had prepared his favourite food. He immediately lunged at it. He only stopped eating more pancakes until he couldn't take another bite. "Mom, that was... So good! As always! I'm so going to miss your cooking skills!", he said with a big smile. His mother smiled at the compliment. "I'm going to miss you, Neculai. Remember don't always keep that nose of yours buried in books and most of all remember to eat!" Especially that last remark she said with a stern voice. "I'll try, mom. There is so much yet to learn and I feel so unprepared! I haven't read up on half of the books we had to buy!" Neculai saw his mother giving him a look and promised her he'd do some socialising aswell. "Now off you go! You're father is waiting in the woods for you. He'll show you how to use the Portkey to get to the station." With that Neculai stood up and gave his mother a firm hug as he said his goodbye to her. "On my way there I'll first visit some of the creatures before going." He passed the zoo and visited some of his favourite creatures, he said his goodbyes to the Mooncalfs, the Kneazles, the Nogtails and the Romanian Longhorn. "I'll see you soon, Umaroth! Before you know it, it's going to be vacation again and then I'm back. If I could I'd take you with me, but alas." The dragon just let out a disgruntled sniff and Neculai ran off towards the woods where his father was waiting.
He arrived their later then he had anticipated... Or he was just that bad at running, either way he was late and he had to hurry now. "Finally! I thought you had chickened out of going!" His father said with a chuckle. "No, no! I don't want to miss this for anything! Just had to say my goodbyes to some of the animals, before I could go is all!" "Alright then, Neculai. Grip your suitcase tightly. When you are ready just grip that old tin can over there and don't let go, untill your feet are touching solid ground again!" With that his father gave him a hug. "Ok then, repeat the steps for me one more time, before you go." Neculai answered boredly, "Grab my suitcase, grab the tin can, don't let go until I arrive at the station and then go have the time of my life! Really, I got this dad." A laugh escaped his dad, "You're going to do great, kid!" and with that Neculai had vanished from Romania to the Station in London.
Neculai arrived in an alleyway close to the station, where he had to take Platform 9 3/4. He looked at his pocket watch and saw he was running late. He ran out of the alleyway as fast as he could. When in the station he tried to relax, but the excitement had him in its grip. Only one way to calm myself down. He thought to himself and he took out of his suitcase a book written by one of his favourite authors. The title read: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He knew where the platform was and whilst reading he walked further. Until he suddenly bumped into a group of people. Which resulted in him losing his glasses. Whilst crawling on the floor and finally finding his glasses he put them on. With a red face he faced the group and said "I'm sorry! I wasn't paying attention where I was going! It's just that... It's such a good read!" He said while showing the book he had in his hand. "Are you also going to the platform 9 3/4?"
SHE COULDN’T STOP THINKING. Every moment, another thought would join her, darkening her excitement with fear. She gripped the trolley handle harder—if possible—and felt the sudden need to run and leave everything behind her. This would change her, this one decision, this one wall. Was she ready to take it? Was she ready to leave her ‘muggle’ peers and family, no matter how they differed from her, no matter how they treated her? Had she grown too comfortable? She gulped, and was about to turn heel when—
“Well, are you going to get a move on?” she felt a harsh nudge from behind, and a growing smirk on whoever did the said act. A familiar smirk.
“Min-Jeong!”
Mina had jolted forward because of the aforementioned, causing their house cat to leap from her trolley and into her elder sister’s arms. Her owl let an annoyed call before falling asleep again, causing some of the passersbys to throw an odd stare or two or three.
“What?” She said, smirk still painted over her features, she gave the cat a few pats, “ You need this, Mina.” Her smirk dropped, “You need a place to be you. You need a place where you can fit in, for once.”
Mina could see something darker glaze over her eyes, just for a moment, just a moment enough for her to catch it.
“But—”
But her sentence was cut short when a person—a wizard or witch if you will— zipped past them, too fast for Mina to take in their features, and straight into the wall they went. She blinked a couple times, to make sure she was seeing things, and when she figured out that she too was a witch, she glanced back up toward her sister. Finding that her gaze had followed the Hogwarts student that just entered the supposed 9 ¾, cutting their conversation short.
“Butts are just for farting and pooping. No butts. Not now.”
She scrunched up her nose at her sister’s ‘words of wisdom’.
“Could’ve worded it better.”
“Nah, I like my wording, thank you.”
Their house cat let agitated meow as if to tell them to shut it.
Of course, the two continued to bicker about absolutely nothing at all before something ran into Mina—or, if you will,—someone. When she turned, she found, however, two people. And by the looks of things, they were going where she was too. The first, who was red to the face, which Mina found a lot of herself in, stammered out a sentence,
“I'm sorry! I wasn't paying attention where I was going! It's just that... It's such a good read!”
Her eyes found the book in his hand, she skimmed the title, and read: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. A familiar book. She searched her memories briefly before she figured out she had a copy for herself too.
Then, before she could respond, he said: “Are you also going to the platform 9 ¾?”
She nodded vigorously, finding comfort in biting the inside of her cheek before responding, with shaky, quiet words, “Y-Yeah, I’m glad that I found someone else who is... well I suppose I'm glad you found me.” she took a glance at his face, soaking in more of his features. He had frames as well, square ones, with tidied brown hair and a rather thin frame. She smiled timidly, and received a nudge from her sister, then a whisper,
“Look. A classmate. Well, you have fun,” with that she left, the house cat in her arms meowing her own form of a goodbye. Mina looked towards her, watching as Min-Jeong and her parents left with last minute waves thrown behind them.
“Uhm…” she jerked her chin to the space behind his shoulder, “You bet that he is too? Going to 9 ¾, I mean.” Behind him was a boy, of their age, probably. Freckled, with a tuft of brown hair that lay over his head in unruly curls, he was a bit tall too, a bit awkwardly tall in Mina’s opinion. He was pushing around a trolley, just as she was. It was loaded with a few trunks here and there.
She shook her head and stuck out a shaky hand, remembering, suddenly, that this was, in fact, a stranger. “Mina Han. Y-You?”

Kat Koster looked over the waves of people. He had caught the slight movement of a nod. Was it aimed at him? It was two, rather short, in his verily so honest opinion, supposed classmates. They held the handles of a trolley, as he was.
In a quick motion, he shifted his weight onto his trolley, pushing off. The cart rattled, threatening to break apart and drop everything that burdened it. Parting the sea of Muggles, Kat speeded to them in an adrenaline-fueled race against nothing.
In those brief moments he skidded wildly across the paved cement of King's Cross, his eyes flickered across the two. They were talking, at least they were. Kat couldn't seem to see anything strange by them, or anything strange with the things they were doing.
It was obvious to conclude that they were perfectly normal people that could not in any way offend him or hurt him, and he would probably never come across them ever in his whole entire-
His train of thought stopped abruptly as he realized that he wouldn't be stopping anytime soon as he flew by the crowd. As they grew dangerously close to him, his legs scrambled to take action. His worn converse shoes took a leap of faith off his trolley, and landed awkwardly, and painfully, on the ground.
Kat then proceeded to be dragged along by his cart, whizzing by the two before halting sharply, launching his stomach into the cart's handle, punching him in the gut. The bags piled on top his trolley shivered, and then, just like that, Kat was standing by the two, curls dangling in front of his face, and overall looking like a mess.
"You nodded at me?"
