There was more to do, more to prepare and Opeila decided to make use of another potions class. Once again she had sought out a quiet corner, which she liked to do when she intended to focus solely on brewing, and laid out her tools. The young Slytherin went through the instructions first and it was lucky she did- in the little time she could only take between the steps, she would hardly have the time to chop twelve murtlap tentacles. This was the first thing she would do, before pulling her cauldron over to start.

Checking the book every now and then, she carried out the first instructions of brewing. Carefully she poured three measures of honey into her cauldron, turned the heat up just enough for the potion to simmer and added the prepared measure of dried nettles to the potion. Slowly she stirred clockwise, three times and immediately afterwards added her prepared chopped murtlap tentacles to the potion.

Leaving the potion to simmer, Opeila would grab mortar and pestle and begin to crush the graphhorn horn. She took her time, 25 minutes were more than enough time to crush the horn into a powder. One measure went into the cauldron immediately after that time had passed, followed by a single anti-clockwise stir.

The fourth year glanced at her watch to make sure not to let the potion simmer for too long and grabbed her potions book. Had she done it all correctly? Yes, it seemed so. The colour of the potion was alright... Maybe she should have some more confidence concerning her brewing skills.
After ten minutes Opeila waved her wand over the potion and quickly poured the potion into some glass phials, careful not to burn herself on the cauldron. Quickly, Opeila corked the phials and held one of them against the light. That did seem quite alright, no?

Potion | Star Grass Salve

There was a small smile on Méabh Regan's face as she looked at the ingredients spread out on her work table. She loved Star Grass Salve, if for no other reason, then because she could collect most of the ingredients herself, out on the grounds, in her own garden at home in Ireland. It was mostly fresh plants and herbs, and she loved the fresh, sharp scent of the ingredients collected.

With the help of her mortar and pestle, she started grinding the star grass that gave the salve its name into a smooth paste, before scraping it into her size 2 cauldron. It had seen plenty of use, yet looked polished as if it was new. She added balm to the base of the salve, then set it onto a low flame and let it warm up for the quarter of an hour. She used the time to carefully squeeze out the aloe vera gel from one of the fresh aloe vera leaves, wiping off the yellow latex as it came. After the few minutes had passed, she gave the gel into the cauldron, then stirred it in swiftly, seven times and clockwise.

It still had some time to stew on the heat while she plucked the petals of a few roses, then carefully began to line her small copper cauldron with them. Pouring the salve base onto the petals, she then waved her wand over the mixture and closed the lid, before she began cleaning up the other cauldron and her equipment. The potion would have to rest for a week before she could continue.

Seven days later, she retrieved the copper cauldron from the sideboard where it had been sitting, and returned its content to the size 2 cauldron. With quick fingers, she put out any stray rose petals that had also made its way into the cauldron, before setting the potion back on a new fire, stoked a little higher than the last one, but still rather low.

While it heated, Méabh cut the centaury leaves, lavender, seaweed, and peppermint into thin, careful slices, then smoothly pushed them into the cauldron from her cutting board. Once again, it required seven stirs, this time against the clock, before she carefully stirred in the flobberworm mucus as well. It served to thicken the potion into a salve; something her students learned in their very first year at the school.

With that, she was almost done. Arranging the mistletoe berries into a neat line on her board, she used the flat of her knife to crush them - something that, as she knew, would destroy the structure of the berries to allow the juice and pulp to incorporate more smoothly. She scraped the berry mush into the cauldron, then stirred until it turned into a smooth paste.

Satisfied, she removed it from the heat, then added just a small sprinkle of cinnamon - the perfect amount to have the salve unfold its full potency. Another three clockwise stir, a wave of her wand, and the salve was done. Maybe, she thought as she filled it into a few jars, she'd take some to the Hospital Wing. The nurse could probably use it.

Méabh hummed as she plucked the petals off the roses that were carefully lined up on her work desk. She often hummed as she brewed, an unconscious habit that her sister had often teased her for.

Today it was a jaunty little tune, and she set the cauldron onto the heat, checking the temperature to make sure it was on the lower side. A bottle of wine was uncorked, part of its contents poured into the cauldron, joined by equal measures of dragon blood. Times had changed, she thought, that she would handle such a valuable ingredient so easily, without having to think thrice about whether she could afford another try if she messed up this potion. Not that she often messed up potions, of course.

Three clockwise stirs were quickly given, then she sprinkled in the pre-measured silver powder, followed by that odd blue powder... someone should really try and figure out what it was, and where it came from. I was followed by six clockwise stirs, then she had two minutes to tidy up the empty bowls before proceeding with the recipe.

The rose petals fluttered into the cauldron, and Méabh used the next five minutes to throw away the desolate stems of the roses, then chopped the star grass that was required for the next step. Not too fine, the pieces would look like something that would end up in a salad.

When the potion was done simmering, she added the star grass pieces, then stirred them in thrice in a counterclockwise motion.

Some more waiting time followed, in which she would start peparing and pre-measuring the ingredients for her next potion, only pausing after 13 minutes to let four snow drop stems drop into the cauldron and turn the heat down to low.

After another 33 minutes, she examined the result closely to make sure the result was correct, then nodded and waved her wand before carefully filling the potion into some vials. They would need another few weeks before they were ready, but she had an inkling that they might make a nice present for someone who needed it.

Méabh yawned, loudly - there was no one around but her, no need to cater to social sensibilities. It was late, which seemed fitting for the potion she was about to brew, if not necessary.

It wasn't a potion she brewed often. In fact, it was only the second time she'd ever done it, which, considering the type of potion it was, was likely still more frequent than it should be. This was the type of thought she tended to ignore.

The ingredients were already measured and neatly spread out on her desk, and looking at them elicited a small smile, as she remembered the last time she'd acquired them, from the sort of channels most people rightfully avoided. She hadn't had to fall back on such sorts this time.

The moonseed berries were already waiting in the mortar, so she added the moonseed seeds as well as the snake fangs and got to work, grinding them down into a crumbly paste with smooth, rhythmic motions. Once she was sure there were no more clumps in the mass, she set it aside, then poured the pre-measured moondew into the cauldron that was already waiting on the fireplace, before she stoked the heat up to a medium temperature.

While the cauldron and its contents assumed the required heat, she chopped the belladonna into rough pieces, there was no need to be too detailed with this step. She let them drop into the cauldron, then carefully and evenly stirred the concoction twelve times in a counterclockwise fashion. A sprig of foxglove joined the mixture, then she had just under half an hour to wait.

As the clock ticked near to the required 28 minutes - it was almost 2 am at this point - Méabh yawned again, but readied herself for the most crucial part of the potion. It required precise timing and measurements, and she kept a close eye on the time as she dropped in the first spoonful of the moonseed paste. 45 seconds before the next spoon, and the process repeated in exact intervals. She didn't really want to brew this one again anytime soon.

Once the mortar was scraped clean, she stirred the potion again, just once, clockwise, the ladle sliding along the inside of the cauldron. After that, there was nothing to do but wait for another 22 minutes, finishing the potion with a last wave of her wand.

Méabh sighed as she filled the result into vials, then cleaned the cauldron and mortar with a quick spell. She felt tired, and her bed was waiting.

Potion | Swelling Solution
Ingredients required | 2 Scoops of Dried Nettles, 3 Pufferfish Eyes, Water, 1 Bat Spleen

Roleplay (200 words min) |

Setting herself up once again in the classroom, Bea looked around. Truly it didn’t look like this classroom had been used except for her. Granted it was only a week after brewing her last potion but surely someone would have had a lesson or two in here. But nope, the tables and chairs were exactly how Bea had left them the last time. Fitting since she was now brewing the partner to her other potion, the Swelling Solution to the Deflating Draught.

She placed her things onto the middle table, careful to place the heavier items and utensils on the table. She left her caudron on the floor for ease of work. She was going to be efficient today. She had homework waiting for her back in the dorms and needed to get started on it before the day got away from her.

Setting out her ingredients, she first grabbed two scoops of dried nettles and three pufferfish eyes and added them to her mortar. Her face screwed in distaste at the eyes. It wasn’t the most disgusting thing to use in potion brewing, but having the eyes staring up at her whilst she squished them was yuck. Squishing them along with the nettles was delightful. Crushing them up, she scooped out the required amount into the cauldron and added water. Heating it up, she let it brew for 20 minutes, all the while cleaning and packing anything she didn’t need away. Once the allotted time was up, she added some more water, and waved her wand as her textbook told her to. Looking at the next instructions she sighed. She’d leave it and come back. Maybe grab a bite to eat on her way to the dormitory to check on her homework…

Carefully padding into the room some time later, her watch indicated 48 minutes later, Bea peered over her cauldron. It was bubbling nicely. She’d left the other ingredients she needed out, and so, put in the bat spleen in before stirring the potion anti-clockwise four times. She noticed an immediate effect and a sense of delight came upon Bea as she finished the potion. Lastly she heated the potion on high for 30 seconds, carefully checking her watch as the seconds ticked by, and then waved her wand to complete the potion.

Bea really wasn’t sure about the next step. Maybe she shouldn’t have chosen a classroom to do this in, but where else would she go. Packing up the rest of her stuff, she uneasily left the cauldron in her classroom for 10 days. She’d woken up on that 10th day real quick, apprehension and nerves filling her stomach like a swarm of butterflies. Checking on her potion for a final time, she was relieved to discover once again, the classroom unused. Bits of dust floated in the air as she viewed her masterpiece. It had fermented nicely and Bea grinned. Ladling it into phials, she stashed them into her pockets. This was a nice addition to her growing collection.

Ella had knocked her knee. Da had calmly told the nine year old as she was sat on the kitchen bench that everything was fine, a bit of comfrey would help. Except they were out of comfrey. And as Ma checked the locked cupboard full of magical remedies, they were also out of bruise removal paste. Usually Nan made them, but she’d been struck suddenly with a heartache, never to wake from her slumber. Now as Bea watched her sister wailing and the purple blotches forming on her skin, Bea resolved to help.

Silently padding towards her Ma, she tugged on the womans shirt to get her attention. “Ma, couldn’t we just make some paste? Nan had everything already.” The older woman looked down thoughtfully at her daughter before nodding. “You can do it. You’ve been taught it at school and should practice. But com get me when you need to complete it.” The look at those words meant that Bea would be murdered otherwise. The family didn’t need the Ministry knocking on their door when Nan had only been buried two days ago. Bea nodded her understanding.

Leaving her upset sister and parents in the kitchen, Bea went to her Nans study. It was filled with books and plants and a cauldron already set up. Bea wasn’t a big potioneer herself, more liking to look after the plants before they were harvested, but the family always needed potions and the skills went hand in hand.

Looking at what Nan had already set up, everything was ready to go. Rolling her sleeves up, she went ahead, quickly filling the room up with the delightful scents of honey and bubotuber pus. Stirring the potion for the last three times, she let Ma know. The woman came in quizzically, looking over Bea’s work. Satisfied the girl had done everything properly, she waved her wand over the cauldron and left Bea to complete the potion. Bea sighed at the next instruction. She’d have to wait for an hour. She could still hear Ella sniffling about the house and Bea felt her heart give a pang. Waiting would kill her from boredom, so instead of going cross-eyed staring at the potion brew, Bea cleaned the rest of the study up. She wasn’t sure what Ma wanted to keep, but at least it would be clean when she came in to look at it all. Once the time was up Bea went about the rest quickly. She added in the seashell powder pinches and flobberworm mucus and then stirred. And stirred. And stirred. All until it reached a thick paste-like consistency. Opening a window, Bea let the mixture cool before she scooped it into some jars and screwed on the lids. First patient. Ella.

Potion | Revive Potion

With all of the things that had happened in the past, the fights among insane students, plants sprouting acid on people’s faces as if it were a rejuvenating skincare routine, everyone in their right mind would agree that being a student in Hogwarts was the same as cutting short their time on earth at least five years, and that was the universe being reasonable. It's like the magical equivalent of fast-tracking your journey to the afterlife.

Who needs a peaceful academic education when you can dodge insane students throwing spells from left to right? The school needed to do some serious rebranding. Replace that ‘draco titilandus something’ motto to ‘life expectancy plummets, wizardry skills skyrocket’ or ‘surviving is an achievement, graduating is a miracle’. Although her third year life was more or less pretty quiet, not even one second Aurora felt safe inside the humongous castle. What happened to her in her second year was enough to traumatise her for life. She even considered stealing the suit of armour on the hallway, but she can’t and shouldn’t because she is a prefect. She didn’t want to stain her not so pristine record.

But, what's a looming sense of impending doom compared to the joy of performing magic and brewing potions? Compared to the mundane muggle world, if you catch a cold, you’d feel sick at least for a couple of days. Here? One sip of a potion keeps the cold away. Want some friends? Gregory's unctuous unction. Accidentally touched the stove? Wipe your tears, for our burn healing paste will work wonders faster than you can say "Ouch". Every life problem seemed to have the solution in the magical world. It was almost like signing a contract with the devil.

Instead of drenching herself in the dark part of the world, Aurora decided to take advantage of it. Every single thing that exists, be it good or bad, carries some form of benefit, it all depends on where and how you choose to look at it. One of the benefits was the potion she was about to brew. Revive potion.

Just as its name suggests, it can revive the unconscious, which would be very useful in duels and racing, and of course, her daily life. If she would succeed at brewing this, she knew this potion would become her trump card. The Revive Potion was a treasure reserved for the most important of individuals, the ones who had earned their place in Aurora's heart. Yes, it was meant for the dashing Nicholas McHerHeartBeatFasterEverytime McCowan. In other words, if there’d be an ickle first year or any other fledging souls who somehow for some reason got unconscious, it’d be the nurse's job to revive them.

It was quite late that night in her dorm, but her mind was still alive, thinking about what she could do to be an aid for Nicholas’ safety. That boy was a raging fire and from her perspective, he was more prone to accidents than anyone she knew, which can be counted with one hand. Just in case one day he decided to tussle with the whomping willow, or bonk his head on the tree, or follow her father’s footstep on his goal to befriend the giant squid she was ready to bounce him back to his best self and carry on with his thrilling escapades.

Two cauldrons sat side by side, each serving a unique purpose. On her left, a cauldron bubbled and steamed, but not with the usual magical concoctions. No, that one was solely dedicated to the art of brewing instant noodles. For legal reasons, her noodle cauldron was brand new and untainted by the touch of any germs or any potion ingredients. Aurora might have dabbled her hands in a pool of slugs, collecting random things from the grounds and stored them in her trunk, but her standard in food safety was not that low. Have some faith, people.

On her right was where the alchemy wonder took place. Though as in right now, the fire was not on yet and the only thing in there was purified water. With the finesse of a seasoned potion maestro that she surely did not have, Aurora delved into her wildly disorganised trunk of potion ingredients, rummaging for the prized possession, which was the murtlap tentacle, carefully chopped into three pieces. In they went, the tentacles taking a dip into a pool of purified water as if leisurely taking a magical spa. Once the five minutes had passed, she proceeded with her next step, grinding three spines of lionfish into a coarse powder and dropping them into the cauldron as well as the two measures of salt that she carefully measured.

With flick of her wrists, or rather, three, Aurora stirred the liquid three times in a clockwise fashion, just like how it was described in her potion book. At this point she was acting as if she were in master chef as the strongest competitor, pretending as if there were cameras on her face, curiously recording each step she took as the voice of Gordon Ramsay echoed, berating the other contestants with his creative insults.

There was still more to come. She added five drops of wormwood essence, one sprig of dittany, and then stirred five times in the opposite direction. As the cherry on top and to unlock the magical potential, she waved her wand over the cauldron, as if commanding the unseen forces of magic to seal the deal. The last thing she did was pour the potion into her vials. And just like that, it was all set.

Her eyes fixed on the cauldron, anticipation coursing through her veins like the excitement to unravel the secrets and easter eggs in Taylor Swift’s music videos. Not at the revive potion, but her instant noodles cauldron. Aurora couldn’t help but imagine the noodles strutting to life stronger than the 90’s trend, sipping the tea like it was on a late night show, and looking up grinning like a devil as it gave her two tickets to the eras tour. It was clear as day, the picture of her hand in hand with her best friend, Naomi, belting out every song in the set list, especially Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve and Champagne Problem bridge.

But hey, at the end of the day, it was just ordinary instant noodles without any sprinkle of magic. Aurora shrugged off the fantasy and embraced the simple pleasure of a piping hot bowl of instant noodles. With each slurp, she imagined herself at the centre of her own music video, dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light, laying in a bathtub full of diamonds, ghosted a prince and took the castle.

On a serious note, even without Taylor Swift's touch, her instant noodles would bring her undeniable joy and satisfy her hunger like no other.

Potion | Burn Healing Paste
Ingredients required | Murtlap Tentacles, Seaweed, Honey, Flobberworm Mucus, Dittany
Roleplay (386/200) |

Zach returned to the Potions class and noticed that the room seemed empty. He peered inside to check if the Professor's workspace was accessible and found that it was. This meant that Zach could enter the classroom and start brewing potions. Recently, brewing potions had become one of his favorite activities because he felt a rush of excitement while doing it, especially when making healing potions. Perhaps it was because making potions was similar to the activities he did at home, as he came from a large family involved in the healthcare. He quickly pushed aside his sadness and began preparing the tools and ingredients he needed on one of the tables.

He was brewing Burn Healing Paste, just in case he or someone else needed it. First, he added three Murtlap Tentacles to the cauldron. Then, he prepared the seaweed by chopping it into small pieces and crushing it to a paste with a mortar. He added four spoonfuls of seaweed paste to the cauldron. Zach looked at the book not far from his stand and read it in a second to confirm his memory. After that, he stirred all the ingredients in the cauldron three times in a clockwise manner. Using his wand, he cast "Incendio" towards the bottom of the cauldron and set it to high heat. Then, Zach imbued the ingredients in the cauldron with magic using his wand and left it to brew. While waiting, he read the book again and observed the cauldron.

After thirty minutes had passed, he immediately turned off the heat completely by casting "Extinguo." He took a jar of honey and poured it into the cauldron. After stirring the cauldron twice in a clockwise manner, he cast "Incendio" for the second time and set it to low heat. He counted to ten seconds, then added two measures of Flobberworm Mucus to the cauldron. After stirring the cauldron in a clockwise manner until the potion became a thick paste-like consistency, he cast "Extinguo" again. Once the fire was off, he added a singular sprig of dittany to the cauldron. Once it had dissipated, he waved his wand over the finished paste to imbue it with magic. Finally, he filled the potion into an airtight jar. The Burn Healing Paste had been made, and it made Zach smile.

Potion: Antidote to Uncommon Poisons
Ingredients: 2 Fire Seeds, 3 Chizpurfle Carapaces, 2 Billywig Stings, 3 Measures of Powdered Graphorn Horn
Roleplay (601/200):
Reducio
What are the chances of getting poisoned in Hogwarts? Apparently, high, especially within the infamous Hogwarts ball where things always seem to go wrong no matter what or so they say. Ranging from dangerous situations like murdering dolls to plants tripping and attacking you. She probably missed a couple more scenarios but you get the point. Raizel had heard some warnings about the food and beverages in Hogwarts ball and luckily, nothing happened to her on her first ball… minus the plants that had gone wild where they were forced to burn it.

With that said, perhaps carrying an antidote might save one's life, even hers. Who knows, someone might be out there, waiting for the right opportunity to just- on second thought, perhaps she's overthinking things or maybe, she has the right to be paranoid considering the dangers that looms in the shadows of Hogwarts, unknown dangers that is. While she doesn't think anyone would poison her for she doesn't even remember doing anything wrong to anyone that could cause them to have a grudge on her, it's better to be prepared than regret things later.

So back to the potion classroom she went, making sure that no one else is using it before she makes her own brew. The Gryffindor student placed the ingredients on the brewing station, eyeing each of them before taking out her notes. The ingredients are expensive and she can't afford to make any mistake in preparing this antidote. Can't have it becoming the poison when it's supposed to be countering the poison.

Raizel made sure that everything was in place, giving the cauldron one last check just in case it had been used earlier and some folk forgot to clean it up and then back to her ingredients, picking up 2 fire seeds and putting them in the mortar, crushing them and breaking them into pieces before adding some to cauldron. She grabbed 3 chizpurfle carapaces, splitting it open like it was nothing as what the procedure on her notes indicated before dropping them into the cauldron.

She stirred it in a counter-clockwise direction for 5 times before adding the finely powdered 2 pieces of billywig stings and then continuing to stir for 2 times but clockwise this time. Raizel pulled out her wand, waving it on the mixture before letting it brew. She let out a yawn, giving the table a tap while waiting and then checking the ingredients list. She can't imagine the look on her parents' face when she asked for these. Her father is quite familiar with potions and she's sure that he knows she's making an antidote for uncommon poisons.

The letter that came with these ingredients was something. She could feel their worry behind those words that they wrote but she made sure to tell them that she's alive and that she hasn't been poisoned… or no one had tried to poison her yet. She mentioned it's for safety precautions but now that she thinks about it, that probably just made them worry. "Maybe I shouldn't have put it that way…" Raizel muttered with crossed arms as she took a seat, looking up to the ceiling.

After about 50 minutes of brewing and almost forgetting about the potion, Raizel added 3 measures of powdered graphorn horn into the cauldron. She put the heat on high, waiting attentively for it while it boils for 20 seconds and then taking the cauldron off of the flame. A wave of her wand then completed the mixture. She is still unsure if this will work but she sure doesn't want to find out.

Potion | Antidote to Common Poisons
Ingredients required | 1 Bezoar, 2 measures of Standard Ingredient, 1 Unicorn Horn, 2 Mistletoe Berries
Roleplay (200 words min) |

WC: 567
Reducio
I was no qualified healer, but I was determined to try my hand at it, even if I didn't have much expertise yet. Spells, especially Charms, had usually been my "thing", but being a wizard/witch meant having to know how to brew potions also. Besides, this place was very dangerous, what are they talking about, "the safest place". A healing potion would come in handy, taking that carefully into account.

The Antidote to Common Poisons was what I was currently trying to make. I could see the possibilities of somebody trying to be poisoned, with people being people and drama escalating constantly. Peeking inside the empty Potions classroom, I went to a spot toward the front of the classroom, then started setting everything up. I had all the ingredients, my wand, and my cauldron, some tin thing with a handle for carrying.

I double checked the ingredients I had brought with me: a bezoar, which came from the intestine of a goat(the thought of it almost made me squirm), a couple measures of Standard Ingredient, a Unicorn Horn, and a couple of mistletoe berries. Pretty simple. I didn't question why this potion required poisonous berries, since I had read somewhere that for certain antidotes you'd need a careful measured amount of poison to make it work.

Using a mortar and pestle, I got to working on the bezoar by smashing it into a powder. Now I had to add 4 measures of the stuff to the cauldron. How to measure a measure, I don't know, but I put 4 decent-sized amounts of the crushed bezoar powder into the little tin cauldron and hoped that would do it. After that, I took two measures of the Standard Ingredient. Now I was supposed heat the potion to a medium temperature for 5 seconds. Medium?!

Instead of angsting over the fact that this potion recipe was being infuriatingly vague, I groaned and tried heating up the cauldron to a rather average temperature. 1...2...3...4...after 5 seconds, I stopped heating it up and looked at the potion recipe again. Now it said to wave my wand and let it simmer for about 30-40 minutes. Sigh. I unenthusiastically waved my wand, though it might have been more of a flick, and then stepped back to watch the potion for about 35 minutes.

I must have fallen asleep very quickly, because I woke up with a snort and gazed at the potion. The potion! I dashed over to it and looked. It seemed fine. How long had it been, 45 minutes? Either way, I needed to do the next step. Looking at the recipe again and returning to the workstation, I added just a pinch of the unicorn horn, then I stirred the potion twice clockwise. I carefully took the two mistletoe berries and dropped them into the cauldron.

After that, I stirred the potion twice counterclockwise, and then waved my wand with a flourish. In the end, the potion had ended up the teal color it was supposed to be. Letting out a sigh of relief, I dusted my hands on my robes. That wasn't so bad in the end! They just need to write their recipes clearer, and I just needed to get used to making potions more often, simply so that I could get some experience with it later on.
