A promise is a promise
While Ava had returned at Hogwarts, she felt just as bad as she had when she was at St. Mungoes. It was something from St. Mungoes that was making her feel this way. Something that was yet again her fault.
Charlie had been a faithful friend through it all, writing to her daily during her stay at St. Mungoes. But near the end of her stay, something had gone wrong. Ava had confided in her friend in her fear of the other races and had warned Charlie to stay away from them, when Charlie blew up on her. She still wondered what she had done wrong. Had she been to protective of Charlie? And then there was the fact that Charlie had suddenly become a vampire-cyclopedia, whatever that was about.
Ava stepped outside into the warm spring air, feeling the summer creeping in. Thankful enough for her, the sky was clear and the grounds were otherwise undisturbed. She followed the path to the lake and found a place near the edge to sit. Her school robes covered the grass around her and her hair fluttered in the soft breeze.
Ava watched the lake, remembering a promise she had made to Charlie before they had fought. She had promised that she would allow Charlie to push her into the lake’s depth. She supposed that wouldn’t happen now.

School was almost out. Charlie was excited to return home and play her favorite sport, hockey. The last few months had been extremely difficult for Charlie. Her best friend, well ex best friend, had been sent away, and they weren’t speaking, until Charlie had the bravery to owl Ava. The two fixed their relationship, until, Ava had told Charlie to stay away from other races. What Ava didn’t know was that Charlie was another race. She was a dhapmir. Charlie and Ava had been best friends for their entire first year and Charlie just didn’t have the heart to tell Ava now, that she was a part vampire.
Ava had been back at Hogwarts from her stay at St. Mungos, for a few months, but Charlie had been avoiding her. Charlie made all of the efforts, such as moving her seats in all of the classes, hiding and dodging her in the halls, and ignoring her owls. Charlie basically had zero friends. That didn’t really bother her much, but at the same time it did. Charlie wouldn’t admit it, but she missed her best friend.
It was a warm, sunny, day and Charlie had decided to take a walk. She walked along the lakes edge, and went close to the shore, not minding the water lapping up onto her boots. Charlie breathed the air and clutched a stone. Just then she noticed someone. And it was her favorite stupid little Slytherin. Great. Ava.
She threw the stone at the lake, hoping it would make a huge splash in the water and drench Ava. But Charlie was basically on the other side of the lake from her, so Ava most likely wouldn’t even notice this grumpy Ravenclaw throwing stones into the Great Lake.

Honestly, Ava would be grateful for a bit of a distraction to distract her from her thoughts, but no one came to distract her. Ava began to walk, probably around the lake until she was closer to the castle.
It would be exercise! She told herself, but in minutes she was out of breath. Was she really that out of shape. Oliver wouldn’t like that, she thought with a grin. She needed to start working out. Maybe she should join that club of his…
She sat down in the grass and worked her way plucking up each stalk of grass. Soon, a spot, about the size of her hand, had formed with no grass. When she realized that, she stood up and clapped her hands together to rid them of a little dirt. When that didn’t work, she brushed them on her shirt.
Ava decided she would jog around the lake. Start getting in shape. But quickly after starting she was exhausted, and returned to walking. Ava refused to stop, though. She would continue walking until she couldn’t or until she reached the castle.
It took some time, but Ava soon made it around the lake to a spot where there were a few rocks, most good for skipping. (Not that she could skip rocks). Truthfully, her legs ached and she needed a break. So despite her earlier promises to herself, she settled down into the grass and picked up a stone to throw.

When Charlie finally got bored of throwing and skipping stones into the lake, she plopped down onto the very rocky and sandy shores and hugged her knees tightly to her chest. Her already dirty shoes were getting the slightest bit wet when the water from the Great Lake lapped towards her. She took a few deep breaths in and out, in and out, before closing her eyes for a few minutes.
When Charlie finally opened her eyes she spotted Ava. Running. In the direction that Charlie happened to be sitting. Of course. Miss Ava. Charlie's face erupted into a disgusted look. Of course it had to be Ava. Why? Why though?
Charlie wanted to avoid Ava at all costs, so she would do whatever it takes. Charlie grabbed the small bag of her things and crawled over to a nearby bush. she ducked into the bush, knowing it would not be enough to cover her. She sighed, knowing that Ava would find her if she came too close to where Charlie was hiding. Ava came over and plopped down up in the grass and began picking up rocks to throw in the edge of the lake. Charlie tried to breath as quiet as she could, and hoped that Ava would not notice her.
Charlie snuck a quick glance over at Ava, and caught glimpse of something. A certain something. It happened to belong to her. It was a signed hockey puck, that her coach and team mates had signed before she left for school. The silver marker had begun to fade due to Charlie gripping too tightly. And of course, of course her name was facing up. Right for Ava's little eyes to see.

A promise is a promise
When she tossed the stone over the waters edge, and the resounding sound was not that of a rock skipping over the waters edge. Instead, a single sound of the rock falling into the murky depths of the water greeted her ears. She watched as the rock disappeared within seconds, surrendering to the cool waves. She sighed from her spot on the shore, barely surprised by the outcome. After all, she had never successfully skipped a stone, nor had she even practiced the skill. But it was never too late to start, so she reached down and grabbed another rock to toss, only to see a black plastic piece in her hands.
Ava examined the worn object, seeing it was a hockey puck. It took her a second to recognize, she wasn't big on hockey truthfully. She could see faded silver signatures, worn from use and time. When she flipped it over, she saw a slightly less faded signature that marked the owner. When she examined the name, her stomach dropped with realization. Charlie Jacobson. But surely, there were tons of Charlie's within the school? And maybe that wasn't Jacobson, maybe the faded 'J' was actually a lowercase 'h'. Charlie Hacobson, obviously. What were the chances that this was the Charlie she knew, out of such a large school? Low, obviously. Still, she scanned the shoreline around her, as if Charlie would be lurking nearby. Maybe she was even hiding in a bush, Ava thought to herself with obvious sarcasm, chiding herself for being so paranoid. It was just a hockey puck. She moved her arm backwards as she lined up a shot to throw the hockey puck over the water, as far as she could throw it. As if that would solve a single problem.

Charlie immediately panicked. Her hockey puck. Which happened to be one of her most prized possessions was sitting there plain as day waiting for someone to see her name smacked in the middle of it. Charlie felt like crying. Her ears tingled and she clenched her teeth and closed her eyes to try and shake the feeling of screaming away. She would have just let it out, but there was one big problem. She was hiding in a bush from her ex-best friend who was currently the second most hated person in her life.
Charlie slowed her breathing as she watched Ava skip rocks across the lake. She’s a good rock skipper, Charlie thought, as the rock glided over the water. Charlie didn’t want to hid in the bush forever, but it was way too late to just jump out the back and run. Then something happened. It made Charlie’s heart skip a few beats.
Ava picked up the puck.
Charlie sucked a big breath in and held it as she watched Ava begin to examine the hockey puck. The signatures were faded due to the amount of times Charlie had held it to soothe herself to sleep, so maybe Ava would just mistake it for a beat up old hockey puck and set it back down on the rocks. Charlie hoped that would be the result, but a tiny part of her said no. Her heart began to beat faster as Ava scanned the area around the lake as if she was waiting for someone. Charlie shifted, attempting to be as quiet as she could. She was in a squat position, but ready to jump up and bolt in either direction.
Just then Charlie’s heart stopped. Ava lined up for the shot, and Charlie jumped up from her hiding place and ran. Right at Ava. Less than a split second after Ava released the puck, she was tackled. By a certain girl named Charlie. Desperate times called for desperate measures, She thought as she climbed off of Ava. Immediately after, without even taking a second glance at Ava, Charlie ran to the edge of the water and got the top of her shoes wet as she reached in and grabbed her puck. She clutched it tightly and used the shirt she was wearing to dry it off. After she pocketed it and zipped the pocket, she had one more thing to deal with. Ava.
