“Thanks! I sure hope so… Speaking of classes, do you have a favorite subject yet?”

"Hmm... Hard to say this soon! I've only started reading a little bit in advance, and I have a hunch. But I must say, I think that Professor Fresnel seems very promising as a teacher. I really enjoyed her lecture and her passion for the subject", said Simon. "Otherwise, I'm looking forward to Defence Against the Dark Arts – yeah, the classical one – History and Herbology, actually."

They entered the wing that would take them to the Ravenclaw common room. Josephine seemed to struggle with keeping up with his pace so he slowed down a little, forgetting just how long his legs were.

“Well, both of my parents graduated from Hogwarts. My father was a Ravenclaw, whereas my mother used to be in Gryffindor. But I can’t really be called a pure-blood, because my mom is muggle-born.”

Simon did not know that you could not label yourself a pure-blood if you had Muggle blood in your family. For all he knew, having two magical parents, was enough for him to see Josephine as a pure-blood. But despite growing up in the Muggle world, at least he new that the whole blood status topic could be a bit touchy for some, so he figured it was best to let the subject go for now.

"I see", he said and smiled politely. "By the way – are you paying attention to the road? I can recommend trying to memorize a couple of paintings or statues here and there, that really helped me during the lunch today as I was trying to get myself to the next class! You should start to recognize where we are soon. See – the stairs up the tower is right over there." He pointed. "Not so hard after all, is it?"

“I agree, Professor Fresnel sure does make her subject seem even more interesting than it already is. I’m fine with Defense Against the Dark Arts, but History and Herbology sounds a bit tedious though, at least so far. But who knows, maybe I’ll change my mind soon!” Josephine remember Simon mention that he has been reading a bit in advanced. Does he learn all by himself or does his father help him like her parents used to? “So have you been learning Hogwarts subjects by your own, or does your father teach you in some parts?” She decided to ask in order to find out.

As Josephine waited for Simon’s reply, she noticed that her surroundings are really looking familiar to her now. They must be getting close to their common room. A few seconds later, Simon’s words assured her of her previous opinion. Only after Simon mentioned the paintings did she actually pay attention to them. There were paintings hanging everywhere inside the castle, but Josephine has never been an artistic person, so she barely took any notice to it. Using it to find the way might be a helpful way though… “That’s a great suggestion, thanks! I’ll pay more attention to the paintings next time when I’m going somewhere.”

As they approached the Ravenclaw common room staircase, Josephine wondered whether she’ll spend some more time with Simon after tonight. After all, he seems like a kind and smart person, and they do belong to the same house as well.

“So have you been learning Hogwarts subjects by your own, or does your father teach you in some parts?”

"Yes, he has taught me some things... And he always answers my questions willingly. But most of the stuff have I been reading on my own in our library", said Simon as they walked up the spiral staircase towards the common room entrance. "My dad has a lot of books... And my mother also. She is a professor at the university, so, I guess that explains it." He chuckled.

When they reached the top of the staircase, standing in front of the door that had no doorknob or keyhole, only a bronze knocker in the shape of an eagle, they awaited their riddle.

"What has 13 hearts, but no other organs?", asked the knocker.

"Hmm..." Simon looked at Josephine before he quickly turned towards the talking knocker again. "A deck of cards!" He had heard that riddle before.

The door opened and let them in.

"What about you, Josephine?", asked Simon as they were met by the blueness of the common room. "Do you have much experience of the Wizarding world or have you started reading our books yet?"

It was nice to get to know another Ravenclaw student, Simon thought. He guessed there would be a lot of hanging out in the common room during the evenings, especially after curfew and before going to bed, so it was good to get to know some friends in his own house as well, since both Estelle and Madison had been sorted in Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. Josephine seemed like a polite and trustworthy potential friend, he thought.

“Wow, that’s so cool, having a library at your house!” Josephine can’t even imagine how great and convenient it would be if she no longer has to walk such a long distance to the city library to read books anymore. “I have a huge bookshelf back at my home, but it’s definitely no where near a library… You are SO lucky!” She exclaimed.

“What has 13 hearts, but no other organs?” The knocker said as they approached their common room. Again, the typical Ravenclaw question to enter. Hmm… What is it? As she was still thinking, Simon had already came up with the answer — a deck of cards! That was really quick! Josephine was deeply impressed by Simon’s speed. She was often quite good at solving riddles as well, but is usually takes her about at least 1 minute. “You are smart! I never even thought of cards at all yet… How do you manage do solve riddles so quickly? Have you been trading, or are you just so great at it?” She asked, not bothering to hide her surprise. She’d love to know how to get into their common room faster, so she wouldn’t no longer need to spend much time on opening the door when she forgot something in her dorm.

Simon chuckled. Apparently Josephine was a book worm, just like he. He could always use a friend to study with as well. Maybe Josephine was also ambitious and curious like him? Someone who took their studies seriously. "Well, if you're ever passing through Edinburgh you could always come visit! My parents are very hospitable. To see the library with your own eyes. I mean, it's just a room... But a big room. And with shelves leading all the way up to the ceiling."

When he solved the riddle, Josephine seemed to be impressed:

“You are smart! I never even thought of cards at all yet… How do you manage do solve riddles so quickly? Have you been trading, or are you just so great at it?”

Simon smiled.

"Actually, the explanation is much simpler", he said. "I just remembered I've heard that riddle before. So I knew the answer to it. But I guess it would be quite annoying if you're in a hurry to get a book you've forgotten in the morning, or, say, you really need to go to the bathroom but ends up with a riddle you can't solve. You remember we only get one shot, right? Otherwise, the next person that comes has to try." Simon chuckled and put his school bag on one of the armchair, before looking around, studying the blue decor in the room. There was hardly anyone there except for them. "So, what do you think of our common room?"

Josephine was quite surprised by Simon’s invitation of she been welcomed to drop by his house at any time. For most of her classmates, going to their friends’ houses might be an extremely normal thing. However, as for Josephine, her introverted and detached personality has always prevented her from making much friends, especially close friends who will invite you to their house. He was probably just being polite. Josephine suddenly realized. How could they possibly be good friends already when they’ve only met for less than half an hour?

“Sure! Thanks for the invite! I believe that you live in a mansion? Usual-sized houses normally can’t afford to have an indoors library. I can’t wait to see it one day!” Josephine used to think that her house back at London was quite large already, only now did she realize that it was far from big at all. “How do you like Edinburgh? I live in London, by the way.”

How she liked their common room? That was an easy question. Before she even knew what Ravenclaw’s traits were, she had longed to be in Ravenclaw, and one of the main reasons was because its representative color was blue. Her mother, a Gryffindor, has always seen blue as too peaceful and somewhat boring. She, on the other hand, holds a completely different opinion. “So far so good! I especially love the color scheme. Blue has always been my favorite color, because it always makes me relax and calm down after a long day of studying. What about you? What’s your favorite color?”

“Sure! Thanks for the invite! I believe that you live in a mansion? Usual-sized houses normally can’t afford to have an indoors library."

"Well, a smaller mansion maybe, but yes, it is still pretty big", said Simon. He did not want to sound as if he was bragging because he did not take any pride in that sort of thing.

"I can’t wait to see it one day! How do you like Edinburgh? I live in London, by the way.”

"Well, it's okay, I suppose. And yes, I could tell from your accent", said Simon and chuckled. "I mean, we've only been here for one day, but I feel like Hogwarts is more home than Edinburgh to me. Except for those Slytherin girls that were pestering me before, people here seem much nicer than at my primary school."

When talking about the common room and its color schemes, Simon realized he had never thought of the color blue the way that Josephine described it. When he looked around in the common room again, he viewed it differently. The blueness was like a calming ocean, embracing them with its stillness. Josephine was right – it was a nice color.

"Don't get me wrong, I'm proud to have been placed in Ravenclaw, and I like the color blue. But I think my favorite color would have to be green. Green has the same effect on me as you describe blue has to you", explained Simon. "I don't mean Slytherin-green, but more like forest green. It makes me think of trees and the nature." He paused for a moment. "Anyway, I better be going. I promised to meet someone before we have dinner. But... Maybe we could hang out some time? If you want to? I'd love to hear more about London, and I'd be happy to find someone in Ravenclaw to study with, and you seem like a smart and kind person." He gave her a smile and hoped he was not embarrassing her. He had a tendency of being very honest when he was stressed, saying the first thing that popped into his head.

Strangely, Josephine also felt as if Hogwarts is her real home after only being here for one day. It’s the first time that she had ever belonged somewhere, and her previous muggle school had never even once made her feel that she’d like to stay there for one more second than necessary. “Me too! I suppose it’s because this is the first time we can actually be in charge of our life. Being sorted into Ravenclaw, where there’s a lot of like-minded people probably gives us a sense of connectedness with Hogwarts as well.”

So it was the Slytherins after all, as she has previously guessed. This knowledge definitely didn’t help her gain a better attitude towards the house that she has always seen as sort of creepy in a way. She hoped that time can prove her theory about the Slytherin house wrong in the future, but for now, she decided not to bother them (or ask them for help) unless absolutely necessary.

“Cool! Forest green is a nice color as well. By the way, I’m actually thinking about venturing into the Forbidden Forest one day for fun. It’s a bit too risky though, as I’ll definitely get detention for doing so if I get caught.” After a while, Simon mentioned that he’ll have to go now. So who is he meeting before dinner? Josephine wondered. “Sure! I guess I’ll go do some reading before dinner. See you later!”
