Some time alone - or not

Mahlioz was quite an expert at walk-reading. She had become somewhat decent at avoiding walls, people, tables, and any other obstacles in her way. This did not mean she knew where she was going. She wasn't looking in front of her, she was reading. She just happened to be good at staying out of the way while doing so.
The moving staircases lead her to a corridor on what seemed to be the second floor (though she couldn't be sure - she hadn't been paying attention), where she decided to stop and sit down to read. She didn't want to tire herself out too much by going too far and then having to come back. So she found a window where the sun shone in, sat against the stone wall opposite it, and read. And forgot about the world, if only for a few moments. Because, though she did not know it, someone was coming.

Some time alone - or not

Over the course of the year, Edme had begun to learn more and more about what she liked and disliked.⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄
If you had asked her in the Fall what made her the happiest, she would have said silence. And not just any silence, but the kind of silence that reminds you of company. The sound of quills scratching on paper, books opening and closing, paper flapping. It was some kind of warmth that had made her brain tick like a clock, and everything worked. But ask her again on that Spring evening and she would tell you this: She hated silence.
Every time she had to take the walk through the empty corridors she felt almost sick, listening to only her footsteps on the cold floor. She'd do anything to fill that silence, clacking her teeth together to the beat of songs and clicking her tongue like a child. It was just too unbearable to feel totally and completely alone.
That evening in particular had been like stepping into a concrete cube. Every sound seemed to be coming from the other side of a wall. Even during her classes she felt as though every voice was muffled. She had tried going outside and walking around the grounds, but the heat had been unbearable, practically shooting down at her from the setting sun. Now she was stuck wandering through the halls. Back to silence.
Her feet worked almost mechanically, dragging her from hallway to hallway. Her hair was a mess and her eyes were heavy, but she kept walking. Searching for sound, perhaps. After a while of walking, she came across another individual, propped up on the window like a doll. From a distance, Edme thought she recognized the cover of the book.
"What book is that?" She asked bluntly without thinking, trying to get a glimpse of the cover from where she stood. She was a bit taken aback by her own forwardness, but her mind had been away for what felt like hours and had just come back to her.⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄

Trying to regain her social skills (which were already minimal), she got a good look of the person. They were definitely older than her, although not by too much, and she couldn't really tell what gender they were. They had short brown hair, and she couldn't see what color their eyes were from where she was sitting.
They also seemed kind of out of it, like they were dream walking. Mahlioz decided to get up and walk over to them. "It's a really good book, if you want to read it," she said, showing the person the cover. She hadn't finished reading it yet, but it was the fourth book she'd read by Kelly Barnhill, and she knew for a fact the woman was a great author, so she was sure she wouldn't be disappointed. "Why do you ask, though?"
