Potions and Friends

Reyna's next class was potions. From her friends, she had heard that the potions teacher was extremely nice. As I stepped into the classroom I gazed around the room. The room was arranged in to allow rows of five students in four rows. The desks were very clean unlike the teachers desk which was covered in parchment. A cauldron next to the teacher bubbled. I picked a seat in the very front next to a Ravenclaw and another Hufflepuff.
The teacher who I later learned was named Méabh Regan, greeted us and told us what we would be learning today; introductions. Yay! How fun! Not... I sighed. I wished we could start learning the fun parts already! She began to show us 3 different potions; the Wolfsbane potion, the Forgetfulness potion and the Herbicide potion. Because I had read too many books on different types of potions I knew this stuff already.
It seemed as if the girl beside me in Ravenclaw did too. She was listening intently and writing some notes down but she also didn't seem confused like some of the others. What can you expect from a Ravenclaw! I sighed again but I decided to listen in case I learned something new. Besides I wanted to make a good first impression on the teacher!
But the girl sitting next to me, surprisingly the Ravenclaw tapped me on the shoulder. She handed me a note. Strange. So I opened it up and read it.

Potions and Friends
A Potions Lesson for Cassie! Cassie loves potions, she especially likes the process of mixing things together. She remembers mixing different soap and things together when she was young. She had a lot fun then.
She sits in the classroom. Next to a Hufflepuff, well, there is still an empty seat between them. Soon, another Hufflepuff comes, and sits between them.
The lesson starts, the potions professor, professor Regan is teaching three potions for them to learn this lesson. Well, Cassie has well previewed the lesson, so she is well familiar with the academic part. She decides to do something interesting, like... talking with the nearby Hufflepuff by giving each other tiny pieces of parchment. She tears a small piece of parchment down, and writes 'Hello, I am Cassie Jiang, first year Ravenclaw. You are?' she quietly folds it and stuffs it to the nearby Hufflepuff. Well, Cassie finds that that girl is also a bit bored, perhaps because she has done the preview as well.
She waits for the Hufflepuff to react. Will she response? Or will she report Cassie to the professor? Cassie regrets a bit, she doesn't want to lose points or be punished for this. She should have asked her before class. She can only wish for the best now.

The note said: ‘Hello, I am Cassie Jiang, first year Ravenclaw. You are?'
I glanced at the teacher. Although I did want to make a good first impression, this was also a chance to make a new friend. What should I do? Well if the teacher doesn’t find out then this will go well!! I glanced around the classroom to see if anyone was paying attention to us. Nope. No one even had their eyes away from the teacher except for a few people giggling in the back. But they wouldn’t report us anyway. I guess no one had read the preview packets! I sighed. Stop overthinking this Reyna!
Making sure the teacher wasn’t looking, I tore out another piece of paper from my notebook and wrote ‘Hey! I’m Reyna Evergreen, first year Hufflepuff. How do you do?’
I knew that this girl wouldn’t report me to the teacher because she was the one who started it. So likely out of the 2 of us, she was more likely to get in trouble. I just hoped that another person wouldn’t report us. Taking a deep breath, I passed the paper over to her and tapped her on the shoulder.
Then I began to pay attention to the teacher once again. Hopefully I made the right decision and not the wrong one.

Cassie waits, praying in her heart that the Hufflepuff girl will not report her. She waits, seeing that the girl is struggling with decisions. Cassie's heart is pounding fast, due to nervousness. Finally, she sees the girl take up her quill and write. Phew! Cassie thinks. Now that she writes back, there is no chance for her to report Cassie.
She opens the parchment slowly, making sure the potions professor has not seen her. From the words she knows that the girl's name is Reyna Evergreen. Cassie takes out her quill and starts writing back on the parchment.
'Hi Reyna. Nice to meet you. I am doing great, you? Thank you for writing back instead of reporting me. I hope we can have fun through this. Do you like Potions? I do like it, but it is a bit too easy for me. You know, I have great academic scores. Anyway, please tell me something about you, for example, your family.' Cassie puts down her quill, rechecks so the teacher has not seen her. Carefully, she folds the parchment and stuffs it to Reyna Evergeen, hoping to hear something interesting from Reyna.

She opens the parchment slowly, making sure the potions professor has not seen her. From the words she knows that the girl's name is Reyna Evergreen. Cassie takes out her quill and starts writing back on the parchment.

I do like it, but it is a bit too easy for me. You know, I have great academic scores. Anyway, please tell me something about you, for example, your family.' I can tell that Cassie is happy that I didn't report her. I just hope that we don't get in trouble for doing this. Cassie takes another parchment and uses it to write a letter back. She then puts her quill down and looks around the classroom.
No one is looking at us or paying attention at all. She then hands it to me looking around once more.
Taking a deep breathe I look around once again and find that no one is looking. So I open the piece of parchment. It reads, 'Hi Reyna. Nice to meet you. I am doing great, you? Thank you for writing back instead of reporting me. I hope we can have fun through this. Do you like Potions? I do like it, but it is a bit too easy for me. You know, I have great academic scores. Anyway, please tell me something about you, for example, your family.'
Slowly looking around once again I wrote on another piece of parchment. 'Your welcome!! I think this will be lots of fun for sure. I'm also doing great. And as for Potions, it seems okay. I think I'll do fine but my favorite classes will probably be Astronomy and Transfiguration. How about you? My academic scores are E's mostly some O's and A's as well. And something interesting about my family... well I'm a half-blood but my family comes from a line of pure-bloods except for my mother who married a muggle. I like my family the way it is because it is fun to have a look into both worlds. I also have a family pet dog. Her name is Aurum. Do you have any pets? And are you a muggle-born, half-blood or pure-blood?' I wrote.
There. I was done. Looking around for the third time, I saw that no one was looking and so I passed the parchment over hoping for the best.

Cassie slowly takes the piece of parchment back from Reyna, so slowly and quietly that no one seems to notice them. She opens the parchment. It tells her about Reyna's academic scores and something about her family. Thinking for a while, she dips her quill in ink and writes a reply to Reyna.
'My academics scores are all Os. I have a high expectancy of myself, I force myself to do well in every homework, it is not easy. I am a pure-blood, to be precise, a half breed. I am an one eighth goblin. My mother is a pureblood, my father is an one fourth goblin. I have a pet too. It is my own. If you look at my left shoulder, there is a purple pygmy puff laying. Its name is Wisdom. It is my lucky object. I tell myself that it gives me luck and let me have nice scores. The main benefit of a pygmy puff is that I get to take her everywhere. Yes, she is a female.'
Luckily, the sound of Cassie writing blends in the sound of other students making notes. Cassie also takes notes while writing the words, after all, she does not want to earn a bad grade in the coming homework for being careless in class. She stuff it to Reyna.

Cassie passes me another note. This time I take less time to check my surroundings. I rip out another pieces of paper knowing I will have to reply soon. But first I read the message. It tells me about her status and the fact that she is 1 eighth goblin. I also learn that she has a Pygmy puff called Wisdom which I think is cool. I myself want to get a cat. I decide to write back to her telling her about me. 'A pygmy puff sounds so cool! I myself would like a cat because I'm lonely here and I miss Aurum my dog. I can tell why you're a Ravenclaw! You work very hard. I like to push myself but not too much other wise something bad could happen. I do love to learn though. Anyways, what do you like to do in your free time? I like to write, read, take walks around the castle and hang out with my few friends. I do not like homework but I do it anyway.' I wrapped up my sentence and quickly passed it over to Cassie but not before looking around and making sure no one was looking. I smiled. This sure was fun, but for now I had to pay attention. |
