This time he tried a different spell.

Obscuro was the Blindfolding Spell and very useful when it came to attacking someone else.

But Kim hadn't really practiced this particular spell as much as he'd done with Flipendo, the Knockback Jinx. There was a reason why one of his nicknames was the Flipendo Prince, it was because it was the spell he was the best at. Ever since his first duel, where he'd consistently failed to either get the spell off or missed his attack, he'd done a great deal of practice and training for it. As a result, Kim almost never failed with the spell now. On the other hand, Obscuro was a harder one for him to handle but Kim had given it his best shot.

After all, why not try and debuff Lucia this time? Rose also had come to the same conclusion and the two had worked together to debuff their lone remaining opponent. Unfortunately, Kim's spell failed to leave his wand, perhaps because he wasn't used to casting it as much as the Knockback Jinx. But on the bright side, Rose's spell went off without a hitch and managed to even hit her opponent. A sigh escaped his lips at his failure but that was it. There was no point in dwelling on it for longer than a second, they were still dueling...

"Good job." Kim told Rose.

The second year reached up to tuck a strand of unruly purple hair behind his ear.

Lucia's attack had been directed at Rose. But this time, she actually made contact with her target and Kim's partner ended up getting buffeted by some winds. The only good thing about this was that it didn't seem as if the winds were as strong as the spell usually made them. Maybe Lucia's focus was still a little off? Well, that worked out for the Lions. During this little period of 'off-time', Kim glanced over at the spectator area. A few familiar faces stood out to him. AF, someone he hadn't seen for awhile lately, other than in clubs of course....

And as always, Eun-ji was there. Kim liked when Eun-ji came to support him because she was never vocal and never called attention to herself when she came. It was relaxing and made him feel less nervous. Participating in duels was never nerve-wracking to him, as it was to many, it was just multiple people coming to watch and staring at him that made him nervous. The 1st time he'd participated in an official duel, during summer, Kim had been a bit nervous. But not as nervous as most might have been in such a situation.

Some might think it was a sign of him being a genius.

But that wasn't true at all. Yes, Kim didn't get nervous when it came to dueling and casting spells.

However, he was someone who got nervous all the time. Just not when it came to dueling and casting spells. Kim noticed Eun-ji glancing over at Lucia every now and then but picked up on how her gaze remained fixed on him for the most part. Returning his attention back to the duel, his own blue eyes alighted on the lone Badger across from him. Well, she was actually directly across from Rose. But that was beside the point. It seemed as if the two were still at odds with eachother. For now. And he wasn't referring to Lucia and Rose....

How could he help them out, without actually being obvious about helping them out?

Both Rose and Kim had the same thought- debuffing Lucia was the way to go. However, only one spell came from the Gryffindors. Rose’s disarming charm hit Lucia, and her wand flew right out of her hand. Rose let out a deep breath. The advantage was secured on their side. Two armed Gryffindors against an unarmed opponent.

Kim congratulated her, and she smiled. “Thanks. We got this,” she said.

At least Lucia wasn't the only person to fail to cast a spell in this match, she thought as she sent a wind jinx hurtling towards Rose. Maybe it was silly to keep targeting her - Kim hadn't been hit once - but she'd rather Kim remained unscathed than Rose did. Maybe that wasn't very Hufflepuff of her, but she couldn't bare the thought of Rose strutting out of the duelling club in a few minutes with not even a scratch on her. Lucia had to prove she was just as good as she had been in that first match... not that she was doing very well at proving it so far. Suddenly, she jerked backwards in an attempt to avoid the spell which Rose had slung towards her, but it snatched her wand out of her hand. "Oh, for Merlin's sake."

Round 7, and the duel was supposed to be all but done. Two Gryffindors who had largely been dominating this duel, facing off against a singular Hufflepuff, disarmed and unprotected. It should be a simple case of sealing the Gryffindor victory, should it not?

Not, apparently. For as the older Hufflepuff went about searching for her wand, both the Gryffindors primed to cast the knockback jinx – the popular first-year jinx often used in dueling circuits. Hui-Ming braced to call the match.

And then luck turned. It was almost a palpable thing, as Kim’s jinx, instead of knocking the breath out of Lucia, just barely managed to graze her, the Hufflepuff being surprisingly evasive even when distracted looking for her wand. But Rose.

Her spell did not work at all. Well. Rather, it worked, but instead of shooting a jinx at the lone Hufflepuff, the spell shot back at the caster, catching Rose right in the middle. Ouch.

It appeared the Badgers weren’t put of it yet.

At least the duel was distracting him from his current life.

Whenever Kim did something, he put 100% into it, sometimes even 200%, depending on what it was.

Therefore, if something was bothering him at the time, focusing on other things always made him able to forget for awhile. When dueling, a duelist was always supposed to focus 100% on the duel. Casting spells was a technical thing and required intense focus, determination and the ability to pronounce words correctly and clearly enough so the spell would always go through. The latter was easy for him, he'd always had a knack for languages and so pronunciation was easy for him. It was probably the easiest part of casting a spell for Kim...

Determination was also something he'd inherited from both his parents. On the other hand, focus was something that could easily be interrupted by various means. Even if he wasn't nervous when casting spells, other things could influence his focus. Such as distracting thoughts, which had always been an issue for him. Despite his tendency to act as if nothing bothered him, many things bothered him. He just didn't let anyone know this. A sigh escaped his lips at the thought. Kim glanced over at Rose, making eye contact with the girl.

It was a mental sort of connection.

Well, it wasn't really, but the two could read eachother's thoughts based off their original strategy.

Perhaps it was more like making educated guesses, rather than mindreading, but mindreading sounded cooler. So mindreading it was! Kim's next spell was his favorite one. The one he'd become known for casting multiple times within any duel he took part in. Unfortunately, this time it didn't really hit that hard, and yet another sigh escaped his lips. Well, at least he hadn't hurt Lucia too bad. It wasn't as if she was his friend but she was a close friend of Eun-ji's, even if they were at odds. Therefore, he didn't want to hurt her too much....

Next time, he'd do better though, after all even though he didn't want to hurt her too bad, this was a duel and he fully intended on ensuring that Gryffindor won the match. To do that, he'd need to take Lucia out with the help of Rose. Or at least make sure Rose and him were still standing at the end of the match. Rose's own spell went off without a hitch and Kim thought they'd go to the next round unscathed, since Lucia was still searching for her wand. But the unexpected happened and Rose ended up getting hit by her own spell....

Kim blinked.

How on earth had that happened? Rose was usually good at this, especially with a simple spell like this.

Could her focus have been a bit off? Could that have been the reason? Did it have something to do with the fact that her opponent was Lucia? The two definitely had some kind of history together. But until now, it hadn't seemed to influence the duel. Kim regarded the two girls for a moment and his blue eyes lingered on each girl for a few seconds. Moving over to Rose's side, he put a hand on her shoulder for a brief moment before retracting his hand again. "Don't mind. It's fine. You'll hit her next time. Focus!" He told her.

This also applied to him. Kim needed to focus too, so he didn't end up doing the same thing Rose had done.

Rose pointed her wand at Lucia. “Flipendo,” she said. While she expected the spell to dash towards Lucia, it didn’t. It did quite the opposite, actually.

Rose stumbled back a couple of steps when her own spell hit her, more from shock than pain. Rose took a breath, steadying herself. She felt a hand on her shoulder, and looked to Kim as he encouraged her. She smiled. “Thanks, I’m okay.” The only thing that really hurt was her pride. She couldn’t believe one of her spells had backfired in front of Lucia.

But it was fine. Lucia still hadn’t found her wand, so they were still in the advantage. At least she still had Kim.

Lucia's wand must have been thrown far, because she couldn't find it yet. As she searched, she heard both Gryffindors say incantations and tried to slide away from the bolt of light that Kim shot at her, but it just grazed her. "Ow," she grunted, trying to be thankful that she hadn't been walloped with the full force of the spell. The same couldn't be said for Rose, who'd somehow managed to hit herself? Well, at least Lucia wasn't that dumb. Her spells pretty much never backfired anymore. Hadn't Rose trained at all?

Alone, outnumbered, and disarmed; Miss Fox faced the grim circumstances of the duel fearlessly, even as it seemed like luck was swinging to her side against the ruby House. Perhaps there was a chance that she could--

Just at that moment, Lucia tripped on her own feet (nat 1) and staggered while attempting to retrieve her wand. This jerky movement turned out to be a mixed blessing, as Rose's Fire-Making Spell soared harmlessly beside the Badger, right where she would have been had she not stumbled. However, that momentary stumble allowed Kim to hit Lucia with yet another knockback jinx.

A blow, but Lucia was not knocked back. With only two rounds remaining, the Badger had to work some magic with her wand to come away with a win, or the lions would claim the victory after what would mostly a dominating performance.

The next round came.

And with it, Kim was able to deliver a successful hit this time. It hadn't been off at all and he was satisfied.

Despite some of the earlier hiccups, both on his part and Rose's, Kim was sure he could continue this winning streak of continuing to hit his opponent. That is, as long as he remained focused and luck was on his side. Once the duel was over, regardless of who won, Kim would think back on everything to determine where his weakness was. If he discovered this, he could fix it through repetitive practice. With enough practice and time, anything could be overcome. He glanced over at Rose and saw that her attack had missed.

Again.

But at least she hadn't had her spell backfire on her this time. That was progress. She was becoming focused.

"Don't mind. At least your spell didn't backfire this time! You'll hit her next time now!" Kim encouraged her, trying to get Rose to see the positives of the situation. Hopefully, he could continue to hit Lucia if Rose's spell continued to fail to make contact with the girl. But if luck was with them, both of their spells would hit next time around. There were only two rounds left and he was sure Rose would be able to hit Lucia at least one more time. Of course, preferably it would be 2 more times but that depended on their luck.

The best part about the duel was that Kim was focused on the duel and not on his own personal life.

For once... he didn't feel as if he was spiraling into an endless sea of confusion, anger, bitterness and depression. But the feeling would only last until the duel ended and then all the emotions would return.

Both of the Gryffindors’ spells shot towards Lucia. Rose watched as Kim’s spell hit and hers didn’t. Kim turned to her, saying words of encouragement. She smiled. ”Thanks,” she said. He was right. They were so close to winning, and they could do this. It was just unlucky that she didn’t hit Lucia.

They were so close.
