The Missing Socks Mystery
"Have you ever considered that unicorns might actually
be the masterminds behind all those missing socks?"
be the masterminds behind all those missing socks?"
First Year, September 2022
Rain was pouring outside the Gothic styled windows. The candles in the library were lit, silently flickering among the old book shelves. Most students had gone back to their common rooms to either hang out with their friends before bed or for some late evening studies. Simon, however, found the library to be more convenient for studying. But this particular evening he was unusually distracted, having a hard time focusing on the fourth chapter in Magical Theory.
He decided that he needed a break and went up to find something else to read that was not in his course literature list. During his last visits to the library, he had been reading an interesting book by Harold Hancock, The Extraordinary Minds of Unicorns. It had a blue cover and the pages had not yet yellowed as much as many of the other books in the library.
He went over to the shelf and bent his knees in order to pick it up when he realized he was on the wrong side of the shelf. When looking through the shelf he could spot the blue book right there on the other side. So he moved a couple of books and reached for it, but as soon as his fingered grabbed it, someone seemed to be pulling it from the other side. He glanced between the shelves with a confused look and saw two hazel-colored eyes looking back at him. It was that short girl from his class, the one with big curly hair. He believed her name was Dolly or Deborah or something like it.
"I'm sorry", he said and chuckled. "You take it! I've actually already read it, so..."

The Missing Socks Mystery
Delilah pushed open the heavy doors of the library and stepped into the dimly lit room. The shelves were lined with books of all shapes and sizes, and the air carried the comforting scent of old parchment and ink. . The library was surprisingly empty, likely due to the uninviting weather outside. The low murmur of other students studying was the only sound that disturbed her laziness. She glanced around, searching for a cozy spot where she could comfortably lounge and avoid any unnecessary exertion. Spotting a plush armchair tucked away in a secluded corner, Delilah made her way towards it. She sank into the cushions, reveling in their softness, and squeezed her knees to her chest. The library was surprisingly empty, likely due to the uninviting weather outside. The low murmur of other students studying was the only sound that disturbed her laziness. She closed her eyes momentarily, relishing in the peace and quiet.
As much as she wished to remain idle, Delilah couldn't ignore the allure of the books surrounding her. Hogwarts' library was renowned for its vast collection, and she knew there must be something intriguing waiting to be discovered. With a small groan, she reluctantly rose from her comfortable seat and wandered towards the shelves.
Delilah ran her fingers along the spines of various books, halfheartedly reading their titles. She didn't have a specific topic in mind, but her laziness didn't deter her curiosity entirely. Eventually, her hand landed on a blue book titled The Extraordinary Minds of Unicorns.
Delilah's eyes widened with excitement as she read the title. Aliens had always intrigued her so she thought Unicorns wouldn't be so different. She reached out and pulled the book from its resting place. Delilah's hand froze mid-air as she felt the unexpected tug on the book. Someone was pulling from the other side. She pulled harder while glancing through the shelves. Her gaze met two blue eyes the color of the deepest part of the ocean, they were familiar and Delilah was almost sure they belonged to a boy in her class, his name was Sebastian ? No, Simon ! As she stared a bit longer, Simon released his grip on the book.
"I'm sorry", he said and chuckled. "You take it! I've actually already read it, so..."
"I'm sure you didn't. She smiled, her eyes turning almost invisible. But I'll take it !"
She hugged the book tight to her chest. And with her eyes still glued to his through the shelves. She raised her eyebrows, urging him to talk somewhere more comfortable.
Rising to her feet, she brushed her blonde curls away and said :
"Simon, right ? My name is Delilah. I'm in your class."
She smiled, a wide grin that flushed her cheeks with a rose hue.
"have you ever considered that unicorns might actually be the masterminds behind all those missing socks? I mean, think about it – they have magical abilities, they're elusive, and they've got a knack for hiding things!"
With a hushed whisper as if she was sharing a secret, she leaned over and said:
"Maybe that's what this book is talking about ?
She giggled again,a soft melodic laughter that lingered in the air.

"I'm sure you didn't." She smiled, her eyes turning almost invisible. "But I'll take it!"
Simon open his mouth to respond but was so baffled by what she just said so he closed it again, frowning with a lopsided smile out of pure confusion. Yes, I did, he thought to himself. She lifted her eyebrows, awaiting his move and he realized the conversation was turning awkward. A couple of girls passed him on his right, stopped for a short moment and looked at him, before disappearing again with a loud giggle.
He got up on his feet and walked around the book shelf to meet the girl face to face.
"Simon, right? My name is Delilah. I'm in your class."
That was it – Delilah. She was Miss Delilah Chapman. He had to make sure to remember that. His Muggle mother always went on about the importance of learning other people's names. Yet, that was something he struggled with. But once he had attached a name to a face, he would not forget it so easily.
"That's right. My pleasure", said Simon and opened his mouth to continue, but Delilah beat him to it:
"Have you ever considered that unicorns might actually be the masterminds behind all those missing socks? I mean, think about it – they have magical abilities, they're elusive, and they've got a knack for hiding things!"
"Huh?", was all he could say before pausing and processing what Delilah had just said, trying to prepare at least some level of a rational response. "Well... Are you sure? I did not even know that there were any socks missing." Simon heard himself, looked over his shoulder and forced a half-tormented grin. He lowered his voice a bit: "Why would unicorns steal socks? Except for the mere reason that they can, I mean."

" I don't know. Delilah shrugged her shoulders. "Maybe they are spies for some secret sock society and they are trying to build a destructive weapon with wizard's socks ?"
She stared at his blue eyes again, forced to lift her head because of the huge height difference.
"Every morning, my socks are nowhere to be found. It surely can't be normal !"
She exclaimed a bit loudly.A hush from a corner of the library followed her exclamation. , Delilah's face flushed with embarrassment and she quickly lowered her voice. She spotted the armchair she settled in the first time, now occupied. With an angry groan, she led the way to a nook tucked away near a large window, where soft sunlight spilled onto a cozy reading area. The rain has stopped long ago making room for a cloudy yet slightly sunny weather. Delilah gestured for Simon to take a seat on the cushioned bench, adorned with plump pillows, while she settled into the adjacent armchair.
"Enough talk about socks ! It's weird !" Giggled Delilah.
she scanned the shelves around them with curious eyes. And her eyes settled again on Simon's.
"Tell me Simon, are you muggle ?"
She didn't wait for him to reply and went on :
"I've been thinking. Instead of wands and potions, why don't wizards just use modern technology? Can you imagine a wizard with a smartphone casting spells with Siri?"
She let out a muffled laugh and continued :
"Can you imagine Siri trying to decipher an incantation like "Expelliarmus"? It would probably respond with, "I'm sorry, I can't disarm your enemies, but I can set a reminder for you!"
She didn't know if wizards that weren't muggle knew about technology, as her encounters with wizard borns and pure bloods were limited. So she wasn't sure if Simon would understand but Delilah found the thought funny so she said it.
She chuckled and realised finally that she was talking a lot and not even giving Simon a chance to get into the conversation. It was a bad habit she didn't know how to get rid of , when she found someone interesting she would go on and on about every topic she could think of.
"Did I talk a lot. She blushed. "I tend to do that when I feel comfortable with someone. Does that bother you ?"
She tilted her face to the side, scratching her head.
Does it bother you ?

The Missing Socks Mystery
"Maybe they are spies for some secret sock society and they are trying to build a destructive weapon with wizard's socks?"
Bloody hell, here we go, he thought and resisted the impulse of doing a facepalm. This conversation was going to be exhausting. His mind was way too rational for comprehending Delilah's loopy ideas.
"Every morning, my socks are nowhere to be found. It surely can't be normal!", said Delilah. For a second, she almost reminded him of a frustrated little kid. Then she changed the subject with a giggle. It was almost impossible for him to get a word in edgewise! Still, he had a habit of listening carefully to what people said, so he listened as if he took her every word seriously, even though this conversation was quite out of the ordinary:
"... Can you imagine Siri trying to decipher an incantation like 'Expelliarmus'? It would probably respond with, 'I'm sorry, I can't disarm your enemies, but I can set a reminder for you!'"
That one actually made Simon laugh out loud, to his own surprise. Being a Muggleborn, he could very much relate to the Muggle technology references. He had never really thought of that but it was so stupid that it was actually brilliant in a sense. Simon thought to himself that maybe Harold Hancock's next book should simply be called The Extraordinary Mind of Delilah Chapman.
"Did I talk a lot?", said Delilah, blushing. (At least she was not lacking self-awareness). "I tend to do that when I feel comfortable with someone. Does that bother you?"
"Not at all", said Simon with a smile and took a breather, almost feeling dizzy. But he felt a strong need to return to Delilah's 'missing socks conspiracy theory'. He could not just leave it like that without questioning it. "But do you actually think that there is someone, or something, wandering about the castle stealing socks? Couldn't there be a simpler explanation, like, some of the girls in your house maybe mistook your socks for theirs? Or your socks disappeared when being washed. Speaking of which... Just out of curiosity: do you know who's doing the laundry at Hogwarts? My Muggle mother always reminds us that the laundry basket isn't washing itself. I mean... That does not apply to Hogwarts. My laundry basket in the dormitory is literally washing itself."

"Then I must check every single girl's feet in my dormitory" muttered Delilah, rubbing her chin with her fingers. She was seriously considering it, it would be weird of course and everyone would think she was a freak, but at least she'd find her missing socks. She has lost around 4 pairs : a pink one, a yellow one with straps of black, a blue and a green one and is determined to find them.
"You're probably right. I don't think Hogwarts has any washing machines around ."She raised an eyebrow thinking about her laundry washing itself, maybe her socks escaped while being washed. " "If our laundry is washing itself, I won't be surprised if my socks went missing because they have formed a rock band called 'The Lost Socks' and went on a world tour. They've always had a rebellious streak, and who knows, maybe they'll even release a chart-topping hit called 'Sock It to Me, Wizard Style!"
Delilah shrugged her shoulders, knowing fully well how absurd she must sound. But hearing Simon laugh minutes ago made her feel a tingle in her heart, something that made her happy. She has always thought Simon was this smart classmate with a stoic face and making him laugh made her proud of herself even if she didn't try to. As her muggle school teachers always said, absurdity and foolishness comes naturally to her mind which was "alarming" and "exasperating. Delilah sighed, back in those times she always ended up at the principal's office for saying something "ridiculous" and "disturbing" the normal course of the lesson, most of the time for taking a nap while the teacher was explaining.
Looking at the blue watch at her wrist decorated with cat stickers, Delilah realized that she might have sat here for too long. She grabbed her book, stood up regrettably while smoothing a fold in her skirt and smiled at Simon. A wide and
radiant smile, her golden curls bouncing over her head.
"Crazy how time went fast." She said "I guess it's time for me to go but I've had a really fun time with you, Let's meet again . "
She extended her head for a shake with a giggle.
"Nice to meet you.Simon."

Simon could not help himself but to let out a restrained giggle. He did his best not to laugh out loud because he would not want to disturb the other late night visitors in the library but also because he was not sure of whether Delilah was being serious or not. Perhaps she actually thought that her socks were going on tours and having rehearsals in her drawer when not being used.
"Now you've lost me completely", said Simon and shook his head with a smile, wondering how they even ended up in that conversation from the question he asked (which he could not remember if he got an answer to or not). "But, yeah, maybe so, Delilah. Maybe so..."
He figured it was easier to just go along with it and smiled to her, both out of politeness and his own genuine amusement. Then Delilah checked her little blue watch and quickly stood up.
"Crazy how time went fast. I guess it's time for me to go but I've had a really fun time with you. Let's meet again", said Delilah and giggled.
"I'm sure we will", said Simon and got up as well.
"Nice to meet you, Simon."
"Nice to meet you too, Delilah. You have a good night." He smiled and shook his head as she left, looking around if anyone had heard their most peculiar conversation.
––––––––
Later that night, all boys seemed to be asleep already when Simon withdraw from the common room. As he changed into his pyjamas, he looked towards the pile of clothes that he had prepared for tomorrow. But there was only one black sock on the pile. Simon looked around, behind the armchair, under the bed, but it was nowhere to be found. It doesn't matter, he thought, and pulled out another one from the drawer. He climbed the ladder, laid down in his bed on his back and pulled the cover over him, starring into the ceiling. Then he remembered what Delilah had said... Indeed – he was missing a sock. With a silent giggle, he shut his eyes and fell asleep with a smile on his lips.
