✦ Ops! Wrong bathroom PV Josephine Acosta Finished

Unlike most of the other Hogwarts students who are already back at their common room, relaxing and chatting to each other, Josephine is still wandering aimlessly around the school corridors. It was only yesterday when she arrived here, and despite the fact that she has heard many stories about Hogwarts before from her parents, she never managed to remember anything about the school’s structure. And now, she’s desperately searching for her common room, because every path looks exactly the same to her.

That’s when she randomly walked by the abandoned toilets without even noticing. As she was looking around for some to ask the way, she saw a boy retreating out of a room. As she took a closer look, she saw that he had just went inside the girls’ restroom. What’s a boy doing in the girls’ toilet? Is he lost as well?

Just then, she noticed that the boy was also a Ravenclaw. Maybe he’ll know the way back! She thought, somewhat excitedly. “Um… Hi! Do you know the way back to the Ravenclaw common room? By the way, what were you doing in the girls’ toilets?” She asked the boy, hoping that he could hear her at such a distance.

“Um… Hi! Do you know the way back to the Ravenclaw common room? By the way, what were you doing in the girls’ toilets?”, said the girl.

Of course! She was one of the new Ravenclaws, same as he. Now he noticed the blue details in her school uniform too. However, he could not remember seeing her in the common room after the feast, but after all – the common room was crowded with Ravenclaw students last night (probably because it was the day after the summer break) and he could not yet tell the difference between who were first years and who were second years.

"Hey! Yes, of course", he said before chuckling nervously. "And well, yes, that is a valid question, I suppose. I actually went in the wrong door. I believe somebody tricked me coming her, because that bathroom is in a terrible state! You weren't about to head inside, by any chance? Because I would not use that bathroom if I were you. It has a terrible stench."

He hoped he had explained himself well enough and that she bought his explanation. Otherwise, he was probably about to get a nasty reputation that most certainly was not true. He lifted his school bag to the other shoulder and walked up to the girl.

"Sorry. I believe we haven't been introduced. Name's Simon. Simon Tilia." He held out his hand. "You are...?"

Who would be mean enough to trick a boy into entering the girls’ bathroom? Josephine has never imagined that someone could possibly be so mean to a first year. Also, they couldn’t have been enemies due to the fact that all the first years have just arrived yesterday. I bet it’s the Slytherins, they’ve always had the reputation to enjoy playing pranks on others. She thought. But then she decided that she shouldn’t have such a stereotype against Slytherin only during her second day here, so she pushed the thought away.

Oh, of course not, I was just trying to find the way back to our common room. I’ve got to admit, I’m absolutely terrible at remembering directions…” She bit her lip slightly, embarrassed that she was acting so forgetful. She usually has a quite outstanding memory, especially with numbers and data. However, memorizing directions has always been one of her greatest challenges, for she often struggles to succeed. I hope this won’t leave him with a bad impression about me…

Then she saw that the boy walked up to her, and introduced himself as Simon Tilia. I think I have a slight impression of such a name yesterday during the sorting ceremony? She can’t be exactly sure though. After all, there were too many new names to remember recently. Josephine shook his hand lightly, and replied: “My name’s Josephine Acosta, nice to meet you!”

"Oh, of course not, I was just trying to find the way back to our common room. I’ve got to admit, I’m absolutely terrible at remembering directions…”, said the girl.

"Yes, it's a little tricky to get around", said Simon. "But knowing that there are one hundred and forty-two starcases at Hogwarts does lower the pressure a bit, doesn't it?" He chuckled.

When they shook hands and she introduced herself, he remembered her name from last night. At least her first name, Josephine. That was because his big sister Clara's best friend was called Josephine. A loud and snobby girl with too much make-up and nails like claws. Josephine Acosta, however, did not seem anything like that. She seemed a little shy and withdrawn, but from the sharp look in her eyes, he bet she was quite observant and clever, with lots of interesting thoughts and deep reflections. He could see her mind working already – probably determining whether to believe his intentions in the abandoned girl's lavatory was honorable or not.

"So, you are heading back to the common room? We can go together. I was just about to go there myself", Simon said and held out his hand in the direction of the Grand Star Caise, from where they could ask around to get to the Ravenclaw tower in case they got lost. "So... How was your first day?"

142 staircases? Josephine remembered that her parents have often told her that it’s really hard not to get lost at Hogwarts initially, because the staircases are forever changing and memorizing where all of them could possibly lead to often takes quite a long time. However, she had no idea before now that there are so many staircases here! “Seriously? There are 142 staircases at Hogwarts? Seems like I’m going to be needing a LOT of help recently!” She answered, half joking, half worried about what troubles her memory is going to get her into.

While they shook hands, she studied the boy standing in front of her carefully. He has brown hair just like her, but a bit deeper. His blue eyes also caught Josephine’s attention, as they make him seem deep and thoughtful. Josephine assured herself that Simon was definitely just tricked into entering the girls’ bathroom, as she often gets a relatively accurate intuition about people who she has just met, and this time, her intuition tells her that Simon wasn’t the kind to boy who likes to mess around with girls, especially so inappropriately.

“Sure! Thanks for showing me the way!” Josephine said gratefully, glad to have someone who’s willing to give her a hand when necessary. How my first day was? To be honest, Josephine hasn’t really gotten the chance to ponder this question yet, seeing that she has so many information to take in during such a short period of time. “Well, I’ve never thought about it much before… I guess everything’s all quite fine, but I’m still having some trouble taking all these new knowledge in though. What about you?”

“Seriously? There are 142 staircases at Hogwarts? Seems like I’m going to be needing a LOT of help recently!”

"Yes", said Simon and chuckled. "That's why I'm keen on learning all the shortcuts as quickly as possible. I've heard that most professors aren't very forgiving if you're late just because you lost your way, even for us first years. 'Plan in advance', or whatever they said. I guess they are right, though."

As they walked towards the end of the corridor they could hear the echoing voices from the many students trying to find their way too through their first day of school.

"Well, I’ve never thought about it much before… I guess everything’s all quite fine, but I’m still having some trouble taking all these new knowledge in though. What about you?”

"Same. I'm half and half. My sister does not possess any magical abilities, so my parents were quite unsure whether I would turn out to be a wizard or a squib too. It's been quite hard to not know, to be honest, it's like you know that there are two completely different directions ahead of you, and you are in no control of where your life is going to turn", he said as they walked the last bit of the corridor and entered the Grand Staircase.

"So, tell me. What are you most excited about here at Hogwarts?", Simon asked as he pointed up the stairs (because it seemed like Josephine was about to head down).

Josephine hasn’t expected that the teachers would be so harsh. She thought that they would at least be tolerant to first years. But I guess they’ve got a point, if they aren’t so strict, maybe a person like me will never be able to remember the way through Hogwarts… “They sure are demanding to all their students, aren’t they? I hope this will force me to stop getting lost!” She replied, self-mockingly.

From her knowledge of the wizarding world, Josephine knows that a squib is extremely rare and often looked down upon. “So I take it that you are wizard-born? How is your sister? Does she feel upset about you being a wizard?” Josephine can’t even imagine how devastated she would have felt if she was a squib like Simon’s sister.

As Simon led her towards a staircase, Josephine actually found it familiar. I think I ought to go down from here? She thought. But then, Simon pointed down, making Josephine feel sort of like a fool. “Not much yet, but I do enjoy strolling around the castle grounds. It really helps me chill out. Of course, that’s based on IF I don’t get lost. Or else it’s just going to upset me even more! She joked.

"I'm sure you will get around to our classes in no time, Josephine!", said Simon and smiled before they went onboard one of the moving stairs that would lead them to the next floor where they would find the Ravenclower tower.

“So I take it that you are wizard-born? How is your sister? Does she feel upset about you being a wizard?”

Josephine's question was so straight-forward he did not really know how to answer it. Perhaps that was because he did not quite know the answer to that question himself. His eyes wondered to the floor and he got a slightly bothered look on his face.

"Well, ever since we found out that I was in fact a wizard, same as my dad, we... we haven't spoken so much. I mean, she is a bit self-occupied, to be honest. And she has just started her own company in London. She's, like, developing her own beauty products... But while my mom is very open-minded and engaged in the wizarding world, my sister has always been more, like, distancing herself from it. And now she's distancing herself from me, I guess." He realized he was talking a lot. And perhaps he was a bit too honest about his whole family situation, going straight for the hardcore details rather than keeping it short and neutral. He glanced at Josephine, studying her reaction before he gave her the word instead: "What about your own family? Are you a pureblood?"

“Thanks! I sure hope so… Speaking of classes, do you have a favorite subject yet?” Josephine pondered her own question, wondering what her favorite subject might be eventually. From what she heard from her parents, she deduced that it might be either Charms or Astronomy. Potions also seems quite interesting, but her parents claimed that their Potions teacher is terrible and made them lose interest in that subject. I sure hope that none of my teachers will be so awful! She secretly hoped.

His father is a wizard, whereas her mother is a muggle. So he is a half-blood, not a wizard-born as I had expected. She realized that Simon seemed a bit troubled, though she’s not sure why. Does he feel disappointed that his sister is distancing herself from him, or is it because of some other reasons?
“Well, both of my parents graduated from Hogwarts. My father was a Ravenclaw, whereas my mother used to be in Gryffindor. But I can’t really be called a pure-blood, because my mom is muggle-born.” After she said that, she immediately regretted it. Simon already seemed sort of uncomfortable with talking about his family, saying that she was born into a magical family probably won’t help. She glanced at Simon’s expression, wishing that he won’t mind.
