The worst thing to do on your first day of school was get lost and unfortunately Leia was just exactly that. The entire day she didn't feel the need to use the bathroom but the rush came almost as soon as she walked through the school doors. She had asked a prefect, or maybe they were a regular student, she didn't know how things worked yet, and when she left the bathroom, there was no one in sight.

The hallways were lonely and quiet, especially quiet. Her footsteps sounded like the loudest thing in the world as she walked around with a frown, trying to remember where she had come from. But you couldn't expect much from a first year whose parents never went to Hogwarts. The only thing her mother could tell her was that the castle was huge, which was very obvious now, and that Leia would probably have many adventures for the next seven years.

Right now she could care less about adventure, all she wanted to do was find out where the ceremony was, and she felt like she was just going to get so lost that no one would ever find her, she'd be stuck wondering the corridors forever.

Luckily, after many wrong turns and dead ends, Leia heard distant voices and came across a pair of older students who guided her to the Great Hall. Relief washed over her as she joined the ceremony, blushing as she avoided the eyes of the students. She stood with the other first years, holding her hands in front of her as she waited for her turn.

After a while of name and house calling, Leia was ushered forward and she eyed the worn hat. She wondered if it would scream in her ear and break her eardrums as she sat down, placing it over her head.

"Hullo, there," cooed the Sorting Hat. She could almost feel it's grin over her brow.

Blushing again, Leia mumbled, "Uh, hi."

"Soft spoken, aren't you?"

"Ur, I don't know how anything works here, my mum never went to Hogwarts, she went to Illvermony, in America. So I don't know anything, sir."

"Quite the respectful!" The Hat chuckled, making Leia smile a little, but she was still a bit nervous. It was weird talking aloud to something in a room full of people who were staring in silence. She averted her eyes, focusing on the ground. "Well, I'm sure your peers and professors will enlighten during your stay at Hogwarts, but for the sake of ceremony, and your lack of attending the beginning of it, I will share with you how you will be sorted."

"Thank you - oh!" It was then that Leia realised that she could speak to the hat through her thoughts, which she had done subconsciously. "T-thank you..."

The Sorting Hat made a thoughtful sound and then he went on to give her a brief explanation of the Houses at Hogwarts. Each student who attended was sorted into one of the four: Gryffindor of the brave, Ravenclaw of the wise, Hufflepuff of the loyal, and Slytherin of the ambitious. He told her in an unbiased way, so she didn't have real any preference for any of them. While he told her, Leia thought about which one she felt like she'd would be put into. Each of the Houses had different values and she actually favored all of them. She wanted to be thought of as brave, loyal, wise, and ambitious, but the Sorting Hat, reading her thoughts, gently told her that she would only be put into one.

"I've been looking through your memories and such, which is what I do to determine which House will suit you. How you've grown up so far, what drives you to do the things you do, is what places you in the House that you'll be in for the next seven years."

"What if I don't like the one that I'm in? Can I switch or try again?"

"No, but most people find honor and pride in their House after time. After all, no house is better than the other. Each just chooses to view the world in their own ways."

Leia considered this as the hat came to a conclusion. "I sense intelligence in this one, curious yet uncertain. Trust to be gained, but hard to be earned. Brave but not stupid...so far you haven't let anything get in the way of reaching your goals and you take long strides towards them, something to be admired...I wonder how you will use this determination?" She gripped the sides of the chair, sensing the great importance of this event and how it would shape her future, even though she didn't quite understand yet.

"SLYTHERIN," shouted the Sorting Hat.

Leia's eyes snapped towards the green table as it erupted into applause. As she stood up she felt tense at first, shuffling over to her table until she heard the slightly irritated voice of the hat, which was still upon her head, saying, "Now, don't be selfish. I know I'm a great social companion -" Leia hurriedly put the hat back on the chair and ran to sit at the Slytherin table. Was she really ambitious, cunning, anything pertaining to her house? She gazed around, flustered, taking in the people she'd be around for the next few years or so. She felt strangely welcomed, opposite of what her mother thought. She thought that there would be some rivalry, if people found out that her parents never wne tot Hogwarts, but Leia didn't think that anyone knew or cared.

A student tapped on her shoulder. "Are you excited for the new school year?"

Leia hesitated and then said, carefully, "I can be."

The student gave her an odd look but then shrugged, going to talk back with their friend. Leia just hoped she would have a decent start, that's all she could ask for, and hopefully she'd get her "wish".

Trixie Prior waited impatiently for her turn to be sorted. She knew she would get Slytherin. Every Prior for generations back had gotten Slytherin. What a disappointment it would be if she got... say, Hufflepuff for example. Not that she had anything against Hufflepuffs. As long as they were pureblood. Trixie scolded herself. She knew she would have to stop acting like purebloods were the best. But why? She asked herself. I could just keep thinking we're the best. It wouldn't do that much harm. Purebloods can be great. She decided that she would think about that later.

"Prior, Trixie!" said one of the professors. Finally! thought Trixie.

Trixie strode up to the Hat. It slipped over her eyes.

Hmm, Miss Prior. Another Prior! You could be a great Ravenclaw... and you have plenty of Slytherin qualities... But which house to put you? the Sorting Hat said.

Slytherin, please Slytherin, please let me be Slytherin. thought Trixie.

Slytherin, you say? Well, okay then. If you're so sure. Are you sure?

Yes, of course I'm sure! thought Trixie.

Well, if you're so sure then... SLYTHERIN! The Hat shouted the last word to the entire Great Hall.

Trixie was ecstatic and more than a little relieved. She had been worried about being Ravenclaw. She knew that she would get Slytherin, and now, here she was! A proud member of Slytherin House.

As the large doors swung open, Emma spotted a important looking man standing in the middle of the entrance hall with his arm behind his back. He studied the students faces, and Emma studied back. Their eye met for a second and she could tell he was remembering something fond. As all the new, bright-eyed first-year shoved their way into the room, he began a speech. It sounded rehearsed but inspiring all the same. He spoke of how we would be sorted into one of the four houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff. To a muggle like Emma, the names sounded silly. Like some strange children's book. Especially the part when the man explained that a "Sorting Hat" was going to make this decision. At any minute, Emma expected someone to jump out and tell her she was being punked, but that moment never came.
After the man's speech, he led the group to a second large door. The man said this room was called the Great Hall. The doors opened to reveal an incredible sight. Four long tables laid across the room, Each one packed full of students in varying colors of robes. The roof of the building was completely gone, or so Emma thought at first, but on closer inspection the roof was actually displaying an image of the skies above. The candles suspended in the air made the golden trim twinkle. Everything was so gorgeous, Emma wanted to faint. There was no time for fainting, however, seeing as the crowed of students began shoving Emma along the pathway in between the two middle tables. As Emma looked downwards, she noticed the every eye of every student was on the group of first-years making their way to the other side of the room. The was a soft mummer of speech from each table. Emma suddenly noticed how dry her mouth was and that her hands were very sweaty.
They finally made their way to the other side of the room and were told to wait. Someone else came and explained to them how the sort worked whilst setting down a stool and a old frayed hat. After the person had stopped speaking, there was a moment of silence where not one person talked. The group of first-year glanced around a each other as if questioning whether we were supposed to do anything. Then out of nowhere, a mouth, which Emma had originally thought was just a rip, opened and began to sing. Emma was so shocked to see a hat sing, she forgot to listen to what it was actually singing about. The next thing she knew, the same person from earlier shouted her name.
"Blue, Emma"
Emma's heart began to attempt to escape from her body. A girl from behind her pushed her forward a tad and Emma approached the stool. As she sat down, the hat was place on her head and a loud voice echoed in her brain. It told her about things that only she knew. Trait about herself that only a mind reader could reveal. After a long conversation with itself in her head, it shouted out,the words bouncing off the walls.
"Slytherin!"
A great cheer arose from the table of students wearing green. The hat was taken off and Emma made her way over to the table. She sat down in an open seat, returning high-fives and fist-bumps the whole way. This was her home now. These were her people. She felt happy and smiled as a lanky blonde kid hugged her even though they had never met before. Emma was glad to be at Hogwarts.

"Kang, Morgan." announced the droopy yet enthusiastic mound of fabric, known by at least everyone who knew Hogwarts very well, except for the one whose name was being called, the name of 'the Sorting Hat'.

Morgan stood up from their seat, trembling, at the front of the table of the teachers - or shall they say, professors - anxious to move. All eyes were on them now, staring deeply and cautiously as if Morgan was a threat to the community. They were stuck to Morgan's face, away from the vastness and tranquility of the Hall, lit overhead with floating candles. The only sound audible was produced from the swift breeze outside the castle windows. The eyes, though many in colour, glew in one bright yellow harmony as if the candles overhead were not enough to satisfy theincreasing anxiety fed from inside Morgan's head.

Morgan could not stand it no longer: at last, they had picked up their lengthy black robes off the floor, shifted in between those blocking their way from the pathway to the chair where the Hat had sat, over which it was now being held by one of the professors, and then sat down.

Morgan had then felt the hat move and vibrate, the earthquake voice above them rattling Morgan in turn. "Ah, yes," it had started in its accent. "Let's see what we have here at this moment."

After a brief moment, it droned on, saying: "My speculations exactly. I sense a lot of wisdom," it continued, making Morgan feel simultaneously honored and confused to have been complimented on. The Hat had apparently sensed this as strongly as they did, and responded as if it had a say in this:

"Nervousness, I presume?" a murmur of sorts arose from both the yellow- and red-clothed tables. Some were looking at Morgan cheekily as well as menacingly, feeding the spirit of insicurity inside Morgan even more-
"Well, not to worry, my dear, you wouldn't need be in Gryffindor... Ah, so it is relieving, I see," the Hat had exclaimed again. Morgan had sighed under their breath at the moment but then felt a little guilt that they might have been his friend group after all.

"You might as well be in Hufflepuff, with that very welcoming heart of yours. You'll get along perfectly! Although, your own timidity is but a mere obstacle that could potentially block you from this." More murmurs from the yellow table.

All the tables except the red-clothed one were murmuring; the blue and green-clothed ones almost at a talking level. "Well, too bad you can't fit in with these pure-bloods either; you could do very, very well, if I say so myself... they just may not, well, may I say, appreciate your status." the Hat exclaimed once more, having been followed by an fit of laughs from the green table.

"RAVENCLAW!"

A roar of applause and cheer filled the void of silence afterwards. Morgan, still trembling, stood up, got the Hat removed from their head and was escorted by what they were told to be the prefect to the table in blue. Morgan had now gotten the chance to relax in this, and with a sigh, started to eat.

After the enchanting boat ride and the first sight of the castle being reflected off of the Great Lake's water, Ellara Butler didn't believe her day could get any more magical. That is until she stepped into the Great Hall, a gorgeous building with high, arched ceilings that seemed to ascend into the night sky itself. Floating candles glowed around the room, emitting soft, subtle light that balanced the perfect degree of mysterious and enchanting. The four long tables that spanned the length of the hall were already full of bustling students, chattering excitedly with one another of tales of their summer memories and the overall likes.

She could not hide the soft smile that graced her lips, as her eyes wandered the room. Who couldn't love something like this? Despite the large crowds and the sheer amount of space in the room, everything felt so cozy and welcoming! A quick glance at some of the other First Years confirmed that they were thinking the same sorts of things, as well. A girl to her left looked a bit nervous, grasping onto the sleeves of her sorting cloak like it was the last thing keeping her from floating off into oblivion.

Ellara offered her an encouraging smile, asking, "Nervous?"

The girl glanced back at her with wide eyes and a slight tilt of a head, looking like she was a deer caught in headlights for a moment before she managed to stutter out, "W-what gave it away?"

"Just my keen sense of intuition. It's okay to be afraid, though. I mean, this is all pretty new to me, but we're in it together." She pointed to all of the other First Years standing in the center of the hall, anxiety evident on their faces, as well. "I promise that you'll be alright, and if not, I'll owe you something later on after we survive this."

As the girl next to her seemed to calm down, Ellara did, as well, too busy being in awe to worry about little things like making a fool out of her self. She was a total clutz, so it'd probably happen, anyway. Might as well live with it!

The young witch absentmindedly twirled a strand of her fiery hair, as she watched the other First Years get called up, one by one. Would she be Slytherin, House of the Cunning? Was she intelligent enough to be a Ravenclaw? Brave enough to be a Gryffindor? Loyal and kind enough to be a Hufflepuff? Ellara had a shattering thought that perhaps she didn't belong, anywhere. Maybe she was just a fluke, and they meant to send the Hogwarts letter to another family...

"Ellara Butler!" Her name rang clearly throughout the hall, emitted from a floppy old pointy witch hat which appeared to have seen better days. Reminded of what advice she'd given the nervous girl earlier, the redhead held her head up high and an exciting smile on her lips as she approached the front of the room, moving to sit down on the single stool in front of the entire crowd. Everyone was watching her, but she wasn't afraid. Scanning the crowd, she saw encouraging smiles, and a few curious looks, but nothing of malice. She was about to find out where she belonged!

The flopped hat got placed onto her head by one of the Professors, and suddenly, her vision was obscured. The whole crowd seemed to bustle to an eerie quiet, as she heard a small voice speak into her ear. "Ah, yes, let's see what we have to work with here... Strong, not afraid to stand up for your own opinions..."

She waited in anticipation.

"However, also fiercely loyal and encouraging to those around you... Gryffindor or Hufflepuff...

The Sorting Hat paused for what felt like a million thousand trillion years, then finally announced to the entire hall, "HUFFLEPUFF!" The hat was removed from her head, and Ellara was met with the sight of cheers errupting around the hall, mainly emitting from the Hufflepuff table, of course. Grinning from ear to ear, she lightly sprang off the stool and moved to meet the students that would make up her family for the next seven or so years of her life.

“Just because you can’t see something doesn’t mean it’s not there. Sometimes you just have to have heart in what you believe in.” ~Ellara Butler

Remy could sense all the nervousness around him. He, on the other hand, was more relaxed than the rest. You see, he was not as familiar with this whole house system. Neither of his parents had attended Hogwarts, so Remy viewed this as a learning experience. Of course, he had been curious enough to research a bit before being forced in here. He had come to a conclusion, that no matter what house he would be sorted in, he would not let that define himself.

He looked in awe as the hat that he had not paid attention to that much earlier, started spontaneously singing! Remy started bopping his head to the rhythm of this poetic sequence, tapping his foot as he kept looking. Looking and looking, sucking every detail of this building inside himself.
'Impressive architecture', he thought as he shrugged to himself. His hazel glimmering eyes were filled with curiosity and youthful vigor as he kept on staring at every corner.

Remy heard names being announced, not in an alphabetic order as he had expected it to be. Scratching the back of his neck, he noticed that he did start to get a bit nervous. The other students had rubbed it on him! Now he was infected with this restlessness-inducing sickness too. He watched the sorting hat being placed on kids' heads before yelling the name of the house. These were always followed by loud roars, cheering and clapping. This did seem to be a bigger deal than Remy had believed it would be.

And then came the time when his name was announced. At first, he stood there like a dumb pile of rocks, staring at the hat with large frog eyes. After snapping out of his trance, he walked clumsily towards the talking, rather old-fashioned hat. Placing himself on the bench, Remy could feel his heart loudly beating. He felt his mouth get dry, but he was too afraid to clear his throat. As if the hat would suddenly devour him if he did so.

It all went pitch black in a few seconds. At first, Remy panicked, before realizing that it was just the hat. It was way too big of a size for him. Whoever owned this previously surely had a large head.
Swinging his legs back and forth enthusiastically, the curious little boy waited for the result. He'd be happy with anything, really. He just wanted to see what was going on again...

"Ah, I see. Much potential, much much potential," the hat started, receiving a gulp from Remy as an answer.

"You crave success, you're not afraid of competing. You are a faithful friend, not afraid of protecting what is important to you. I think I know where to put you..."

Remy closed his eyes, waiting for his judgment. He hadn't done anything wrong, but it felt like he had. He could feel everyone's eyes burning into him. He was impatient to hear what the hat had decided. Even if this whole scene lasted for maybe 20 seconds, it felt like an eternity. Eventually, he was sorted like the rest of this batch.

"Slytherin!" it roared. Remy could hear loud cheers and whistle. The hat was lifted from his head and he blinked a few times, trying to get his eyes adjusted to the light again. The boy was grinning once he saw one of the tables welcoming him with their gestures. The rest of the tables just clapped politely, as he waltzed comically towards his new family.

The air was almost electric as snippets of nervous conversation could be heard ad the new students lined up at a massive wooden double door. Augustus stood tall and proud, a half smirk seemed perpetually etched on his face. He did quite enjoy the boat ride and the horseless carriage, he wondered how they sort students would there be a test? He could hear others wondering aloud what house he would be sorted in, Augustus had no doubt in his mind that he will continue his family legacy and join them in Slytherin. Besides where else would he find fellow dark arts enthusiasts. Augustus found himself at great ease surrounded in a crowd of people, he always was a people person and by people person he knew how to manipulate others with natural ease.

The enormous double doors finally swung open after an extremely warm greeting from the headmaster to allow the new students into a massive breathtaking hall with the open sky overhead. The beautifully dotted night sky glitter with stars and the bright luminescent full moon paled to the elegance of the Great Hall. Augustus scanned the massive hall from the elegant chandelier to the the students' heads turned towards the new arrivals, to the raised dais with the staff table centered at the far end of the hall. His eyes and mind already scanning and analyzing every minute detail that he could use later.

Augustus's mind was rushing as an old, ragged hat song a song about the different houses highlighting the traits required, when it came to Slytherin Augustus's smirk turned into a full grin he knew where he belonged. Hufflepuff was a joke to him, his father was an alumni from that house. Gryffindor are far too goody goody for his taste, Ravenclaw was not a bad backup plan, undesirable as it was. During the last few days of his holiday and on the Hogwarts express he had managed to quickly go through all his books and decided that Defence Against the Dark Arts and Transfiguration and seemed like the most interesting whilst Astronomy and Herbology seemed to be the most boring. Thus he read deeper into both books throughout the train ride and during the carriage.

Once the sorting hat finished belting its tune, names began to get called and eventually Augustus was called. Augustus strutted down the alley between the Hufflepuff and Gryffindor tables with a look of utter contempt towards both houses. He sat on the stool and as soon as the hat was lowered it spoke to him, he was so thin that the hat easily fell over his eyes shrouding him in darkness, one could only see his thin chin and his shoulder length, raven black hair. "Slytherin eh...? There could not be a more fitting match, you are manipulative and cunning beyond measure, I also sense great aggression and viciousness. However your insatiable lust for knowledge would would make you a tremendous scholar in Ravenclaw. Alas you are going to................. SLYTHERIN!"

Augustus was pleased with himself, he placed the hat on the stool and very haughtily made his way down to the Slytherin table, each step he took exuded with pride, his lips ever smirking. Finally upon reaching the Slytherin table he plopped down and his smirk turned into a smile as the gregarious boy introduced himself to his fellow Slytherins. After making the necessary facade, he reached into his bag and returned to the Transfiguration book. He could not wait for his classes, Augustus wsd going to dive into his studies and he vowed to himself that he will excel at the classes he enjoyed.

Henry'd stood on his tiptoes to try and see over the heads of those around him, he was quite short but incredibly curious as to what exactly was singing when he couldn't see anyone. Pushing some of his blonde fringe out of his eyes, Henry finally gave up and settled back down onto his flat feet, he'd find out soon enough.
Reed, he thought, why did my last name have to be Reed? It was so low down on the alphabet! It felt like forever before the crowd of first years started to disperse and by that point, Henry had managed to suss out which house was which. Judging by the reaction of the other houses, he assumed the green one, Slyth-something, wasn't a good one so he hoped he wouldn't be put in that one. Plus, they all looked scary. The red one, Gryffindoor?, looked like fun but the hat (and how surprised Henry had been when he found out what was talking! He couldn't wait to write to his family to tell them.) had said it was for the brave, and Henry believed he wasn't brave in the slightest. The blue one, that's mascot was some sort of bird, was daunting for him as whilst Henry was smart, he didn't think he was that smart. It'd have to be the yellow house, he thought. It looked very friendly and all good things were said about it.
Huffandpuff in his mind, he felt a bit more prepared when his name was finally called. Sitting on the stool and watching as the room went dark as the weird singing hat was placed on his head, Henry pleaded for the hat to put him in the right place.
'Please do the yellow one, I don't fit in the others!' kept going through his mind, stopping only when the hat began to reply.
'I respect your wishes, Henry, but in your mind all I see is facts, figures and love of knowledge! Hufflepuff could dampen your potential..Gryffindor don't value the intelligence as much and Slytherin, well, you wouldn't survive a week there. So..it has to be...RAVENCLAW!'
Henry stumbled off the chair, moving to the now cheering house as he felt his face drain of colour- what had he gotten himself into?

Phoebe McCrary sat silently in her seat as she listened in on everyone else's conversations. Her eyes, however, were fixed on only one thing: the sorting hat. The sorting hat was going to determine where she would be for her full seven years at Hogwarts. The sorting hat would determine who she would be surrounded by.

Upon hearing her name being called, she quietly stood and made her way to the sorting hat, attempting not to trip on the impossibly lengthy robe she adorned. In the back of her mind, she wondered if the person who gave her the robe took incorrect measurements. Taking a seat, she began to flush at the sight of everyone's eyes. Tightening her grip slightly on the arms of the chair, she felt her heartbeat escalate as the hat was placed on her head.

Despite her embarrassment and shame, she kept her head high. All of these years of isolation from people her age would not allow her to make a bad first impression. Closing her eyes and taking a breath to calm her nerves, she opened her eyes as she heard the name of her house being belted out from the ornament on her head: Slytherin.

Slytherin?

She quickly stood up, eyes wide and lips parted slightly in surprise as the other students cheered for her. Slytherin in particular seemed to be the most obnoxiously noisy.

Quickly making her way to the Slytherin table, she lowered her gaze to the floor as she tried much harder than before to not trip. Taking a seat furthest away from her peers, she messed with her hands nervously, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. She was not bitter or scared because of her house placement, merely surprised since she knew of the Slytherin's reputation.

She was silent for the rest of the evening.

Walking into the castle was surreal, even more surreal than it was arriving in the boats and overlooking the massive location. She had gotten a boat with a boy she had met on the train, Freyr he had said his name was. He was quite, not much for conversation but what they had talked about was light and fun and Eliana had really enjoyed it.

She was just like all the other first years, looking around in awe as they walked through the main hall. She had seen pictures in various books she had read about the castle, but seeing it first hand was something that could not be explained via description or even by picture. You had to see it for yourself to fully experience it.

Nerves was obvious among herself and the other students that were there for the first time. Being greeted at the front and being told that they were about to start the sorting ceremony only made the butterflies in her stomach grow. There was no real reason to be nervous, the sorting hat would put her where she needed to be, the best house to help her achieve her goals in life.

Walking in, all eyes were on them which made the nerves even worse. She stayed close to Freyr, even though she had just met him she felt comfortable around him, or at least comfortable enough that being near him seemed to calm her down, well enough to walk forward.

Watching as each person's name was called, not seeming to be in any kind of order, at least not an order than Eliana could figure out, so when her name was called she was not ready at all. Giving a quick nervous glance towards Freyr before walking up and sitting down in the stool.

When the sorting hat was placed on her head she couldn't focus on anyone else, it was as if there was no one else in the room as she waited. When it called out Slytherin she was a little down, having hoped to be placed in Ravenclaw like her mother had, but still had a smile on her face as she walked over to the table that had the green and black clothed students.

Waiting for Freyr's name to be called, to see if she would get lucky and have her only friend, so far, be placed in the same house as her as she filled her plate modestly with food.
