When Valentin explained that there hadn't been enough time to get his wrist looked at because the injury had happened late at night, Ginyami's brows steepled in concern. Valentin had assured him that he had patched it up well enough that he was functional, but that didn't mean he hadn't been in pain. He wondered just how much the seeker had had to suffer through the first task.

Valentin went on to say that it wasn't his friends' fault that they didn't worry about him because he didn't tell them since they already had enough to worry about that day. Ginyami frowned. "And if they had hurt themselves before the task, would you not have wanted them to tell you? Or would you have rather they have kept it to themselves because it would have been what the team needed most? And furthermore, how could you have known before the task even started that your hurt wrist would not have gotten in the way? How could you have known beforehand that you would have only needed to 'hold a scepter and tank some blows'? Besides, I think tanking blows would be much harder with your injury!"

But Valentin was talking about being strongest together and the accomplishments of their species. About the great things they could accomplish if he and Ginyami trusted each other to the core and supported one another. Which was all well and good, but Ginyami still thought it was beside the point. Had it really been better for Valentin to allow his wrist to go mostly untreated just because he didn't want to impact his team? Couldn't it had impacted them worse if luck hadn't been on his side?
"I understand what you're saying, but you could have really gotten yourself even more badly hurt with an already weakened wrist and then where would your team have been? Wouldn't they want you to trust them with the fact that you were injured beforehand? It just doesn't seem right that you simply endured it in silence."

The way the Durmstrang student smiled radiantly and nuzzled Ginyami's shoulder served to pacify his peer somewhat, even if it was against his will. Valentin certainly seemed to know how to butter him up. At least until Hiro showed up, his teasing serving to sour Ginyami's mood all over again.

"Ah! I'm wounded!"

Ginyami made a show of rolling his eyes at Hiro's theatrics.

"You're telling me it wasn't asked for?"

He gave his underclassman a pointed look. But Hiro got back up and nodded as he said, "Ahh, I see. It wasn't asked for, it was needed, I understand completely, Yami."

A grasping hand reached out to grab Hiro by his collar, but the playful younger teen was deft at dodging, especially because he had predicted Ginyami would make a move toward him.

"I swear, Hiro, when I get my hands on you..." he muttered irritably under his breath in Japanese. But Hiro had already re-directed his attention and conversation towards Valentin. Fortunately, it wasn't long before curiosity got the better of him and he, too, was asking Valentin about his wrist. Ginyami wondered at Valentin's sigh before his response and felt a little bad to have brought the injury up again with Hiro around in case Valentin hadn't wanted to discuss it with him. By then, however, he seemed to determine to do so anyway.

Ginyami watched the seeker's thumb and index finger rub together as he listened to their owner recount the tale of what had happened to him. So, he had been overpracticing? What, on his broom? And he had crashed? His features morphed with more worry and concern, particularly when Valentin discussed feeling the pain from not being good enough for someone and that he didn;t think he was good enough yet - not for anyone. Not even for Ginyami.

At this, Ginyami felt his face warm up and tinge slightly red, especially with the knowledge that Hiro was there listening as well, but before he could think about what he was doing, he subconsciously reached out to take Valentin's hand and encapsulate it between his own.

"But Valentin, what are you talking about? Of course you're worthy. Why would you think otherwise?" Ginyami wanted to know, maintaining eye-contact with the quidditch captain. "You won't lose me. I'll stay by your side as long as you wish it. You are more than worthy of that, I assure you."

Tone nodded.

"It's not really my owl, it'll be a friend's owl." The duo-toned teen told Valentin.

"We aren't allowed to bring pets to other schools." As Ginyami echoed his earlier question about Valentin breaking his wrist, Tone glanced over at the Hell-Chaser. What would his response be? Valentin started to explain things and Tone listened quietly, for him, as the whole story was revealed to them. Ah, so the culprit for this injury had been Valentine's broom. It made sense. Tone knew the obsession about practicing and training all the time to get better. For some people it was 100% needing to win over everyone.

For them, it was a way to bring your team to victory and gain prestige amongst the wizarding community sports. But for others, it wasn't about the victory or even about winning the prize. For some, like him and it seemed like Valentin, it was about being acknowledged and being reassured that your existence meant something to someone. To those who really mattered above all others. For Valentin it seemed as if it relating more to friends. For Tone it was relating to his parents and maybe people in general. He wasn't entirely sure.

Unlike him, Valentin was able to put his thoughts into words.

Eloquent words. Tone didn't think he had the talent to do the same. He didn't know how to express himself.

Not when it came to serious matters like this. It was why he was always energetic, talkative and happy on the outside. In truth it was a defense mechanism to prevent others from asking if he was alright. If you seemed happy and carefree, why would anyone ask if you were fine? Some of Valentin's words struck a chord in Tone and he couldn't help but think about himself for once. Which was rare when he was in the company of others. Maybe it was because it hit too close to home for him... No one else knew about Tone's true feelings...

No one but Akira. And that had been an accident... Akira had come across him during a vulnerable time.

I’m not good enough, not yet. Not for… anyone, not for Ginyami, but I can get better. I can become worthy. I want to earn the love I need so badly... The only way I can accept such blessings as friends like you two is if I deserve it... Even earlier, there was a time when... I wasn’t good enough, either, and it almost cost me forever. People won’t stay around me if I don’t do better. They leave when they find bluer horizons, but I can’t… I don’t want to lose someone again, and I don’t want to lose you. They had been Valentin's words....

But could have been his own. Tone kind of zoned out as Valentin and Ginyami conversed on their own.

If one were to look at him though, it would be obvious something was wrong with him. But why would either of the boys do that? Weren't they more interested in eachother right now?

Valentin let Ginyami’s chastising words flow over him like rain, absorbing their meaning without a word. He had no excuses, feeling they would have defeated the purpose of sharing the moment. The fox’s scathing tongue was one of Valentin’s favorite qualities about him, showing a level of investment in Val’s affairs others had rarely braved before. With the pain dying down in his hand, Valentin’s head was finally clearing, enhancing the clarity of Ginyami’s heated emotion. After some back and forth with Hiro, Valentin went on to explain how the source of his wrist-breaking crash had been overpracticing and a tortured need to be good enough for love.

"But Valentin, what are you talking about? Of course you're worthy. Why would you think otherwise? You won't lose me. I'll stay by your side as long as you wish it. You are more than worthy of that, I assure you."

“You say that now, in the beginning when it’s easy and we’re right here. When you go back to the other side of the world, what will I even be to you anymore? How can you stay by my side then? How can I be there for you in the way you deserve with all that distance… it’s like… how my parents said they would always love me and be there for me, but then they had to travel constantly, and then it all went away… Once there’s a big loss, like with my team, or when I fail to protect you like with my mother, how will everything not just fall apart? In the end, who has really stuck with me no matter what? Who even tries to unify their life with mine in more than a superficial way? It’s not other peoples’ fault… it’s mine. If I were good enough, people would stick around and try to meet me on the same level of commitment that I offer.” Looking up briefly and squeezing Ginyami’s hand, Valentin couldn’t muster the smile he wanted to give him. Turning his head, the seeker could swear he saw his own look reflecting back at him from Hiro’s eyes. There was something inside the calico's stare, a dissonance, that didn’t match his cheerful exterior. The frost captain had a way of seeing inside of peoples’ souls, or so people said. Perhaps this was an example of it.

“Look, can… Hiro, can we chat sometime? Somewhere else, away from all the chatter of the dining hall…” Turning back to Ginyami, Valentin’s violet eyes seemed to cry out with longing. “I need to take a walk. Or fly, really. Sitting still here is not helping me think. Would you join me?”

Tone was still lost.

That is, until he heard his name being called out, and he blinked, returning to reality, or the present time.

Unknown to him, Tone's smile had dropped over the past few minutes, but now it returned again. He was used to faking a smile with everyone. It was his defense mechanism. Once again looking happy and carefree, Tone focused on Valentin, the one who had called out his name. "Mm! I'm always available to talk! Send me word when you want to meet up, or if you see me around feel free to come on over."

Tone told him. As Valentin spoke to Ginyami again, the duo-toned teen sensed he wanted to be alone with Yami. Well, now was good enough time to part ways with them. He'd make his wish come true. "Well, I'll see you two sometime soon. You know, just to make sure you guys don't suffer any after-effects. Take care of yourselves!" Tone told them and then turned around and headed out of the room.

It was time to go searching again.

For old friends. And maybe to make some new friends in the process too.
