Partly cloudy, light breeze, 10°C/50°F
Honestly, it was sad how little people were outside right now. To the young Griffindor, it was perfect. Jay had set his mind to do something other than homework - not that he did it anyways - and so outside he went. At first, he wasn't sure on what to do. The school year was almost over, sure, but that didn't mean he knew the grounds all that much. He usually spent his time in the common rooms or dashing from class to class. He didn't mind not knowing. His excuse was that it was only his first year, and he shouldn't be expected to memorize the way around the castle.

Yeah. He could do it next year. The boy thought to himself in quite the dismissive tone. Jay walked around before setting his gaze on a tall yet sturdy tree. Perfect. A grin stretched across his face as he found what he was looking for. Sure, he had never really climbed a tree this tall before, but it couldn't be that hard, right? Jay got his first foothold easily and started climbing. 1.. 2.. 3.. He made it about halfway up the tree before he stopped and looked down. Wow. He was pretty high. He guessed if he ever wanted to go down again without help, this was as far as he could go. Climbing down was always harder.

Jay sat down on a thick branch with a sigh, brushing his hands on his jeans. "Well. I'm up 'ere. I haf' ta say, this is a great view." The boy started talking to himself, running a calloused hand through his unkempt brown hair. Of course, he'd been higher when he was on a broom, but it was still a nice sight without the risk of a broom going crazy and throwing you off. Leaning back, he let his body go upside down. His hands were resting limply by his sides as he held onto the branch with just his legs. He was bored and tired. Maybe he could just hang up here for a bit, then come down for dinner. Supper?

"Cinco De Mayo was yes'erday.. Maybe I should 'o some'ing for it? Usua'y Mum would make tacos, but.. Yeah, I'm so hopin' Mum didn't send tacos over owls." Jay chuckled at himself. He knew that was a totally valid thought. His mum was.. odd. His family was a bit odd. But he wouldn't have it any other way. Jay let his eyes unfocus and just thought in silence. This was nice.

Sorry for replying so late <3
Mellani was becoming quite used to coming to the garden recently. It was a peaceful place, besides the fact that it was usually empty. Besides, it was a Saturday, and Mellani wasn't in the mood to go to the library. She'd already completed all her homework on the previous day. The garden seemed like the only sensible place to go to if she didn't want to read or get disturbed.

Admittedly, the garden was also kind of boring. Mellani was used to walking around alone, but recently, she'd started wondering how it would feel to have one best friend who would walk with her. Probably not possible, seeing how everyone here reacts to muggle-borns and all, she thought to herself. She had long learned that most students at Hogwarts thought that being a muggle-born was some kind of curse or something.

Mellani wrapped her arms around herself, shivering. She hadn't been able to find her hoodie in her dorm and had hence come out wearing a half t-shirt with leggings. Not the best dressing style for such a cold day, huh? Mellani wished that she would find her hoodie but for now, she would have to survive the cold.

Mellani looked around just in time to see someone climbing a tree. She went closer out of curiosity. She had never seen anyone at Hogwarts climb a tree before and, admittedly, the fact that someone was doing it surprised her. Normally, students here just used brooms and she was pretty sure that if any of the blood purist out here saw someone climb a tree, it would lead to a lot of bullying and being called "muggle".

Mellani wondered if she should climb up the tree too. It seemed fun, and Mellani was pretty bored, but she decided against it. Just looking at the other boy was okay. For now, at least. He seemed to be talking to himself. Something about the view being really good. Mellani was tempted to go up and see for herself. Then, much to her surprise, the boy started hanging using only his legs. Woah, guess someone had a death wish today, she thought to herself. Well, not exactly a death wish, but he could get hurt really bad.

She looked at the boy as he said yet another thing to himself. She wondered if she should say something or just go away. After all, he did look like he wanted to spend some time alone. Mellani sighed, not really knowing what to do.

The boy hung on the branch for a few more seconds, swaying just a tiny bit in the air. Then, he felt a pair of eyes on him, and he blinked himself out of his thoughts. Was someone watching him? It felt a bit disconcerting to feel that. He would have to put up the mask he so carefully created to be approachable, and he was just tired from school. Why couldn't everyone just leave him alone for once in his life? It was getting annoying how there was always a set of eyes on him, watching. Waiting. Did he say watching?

The muggle-born groaned. Okay. Time to be normal again. His hands grabbed the branch, and he kicked off so he was holding himself up by his arms, looking directly at.. a first year? Not that it was new, but the gaze felt more mature then a simple first year like himself. Jay quickly plastered on a smile, hanging on the branch with one hand, the other hanging limply by his side. "Heya! 'ow can I help ya, lad? You need me for somethin', or are ya jus' lookin' 'round?" The Gryffindor had a very approachable air around him, a soft smile on his face paired with his kind brown eyes.

Maybe he should've just continued doing what he was doing, leaving the girl to herself to interact if she wanted to. But.. well, he was already too far in at this point. "I'm Divus, by ta way. Jay Divus. He/Him. I'm a Gryffindor, first year li'e 'ourself. Ahem, yourself." Great, making assumptions. But the girl looked his age, so it was a safe one. He would be embarrassed and surprised if the girl was actually a second year. He just hoped he wouldn't have to explain the fact he sounded like a Kindergartner still learning to talk.

Mellani was honestly impressed as the boy righted himself. She'd really thought he'd have some trouble doing it. He was still hanging when he noticed Mellani and asked her how he could help her. For a moment, she felt like making a joke and saying that he could do it by trying not hurt himself and keeping himself alive, but decided against it as she saw his kind smile.

"I was just looking around.", she said, mirroring the kind smile. She wondered if she'd made him feel awkward and should have just walked away when she saw him. Mellani let out a small sigh, wondering if for once, she could do something right in life. Something she wouldn't doubt herself over a thousand times for. No use thinking about that, though. Mellani knew that it was practically impossible for her to not overthink anything unless she was near people she really, really trusted.

"I'm Divus", he said. For a moment, Mellani thought that that was his name before he clarified that he was Jay Divus, a Griffindor First Year. He was quick to make assumptions, calling Mellani a first year too. It was the truth though. Mellani didn't think it was that easy to guess. She also didn't mind the boy's casual speech. She was pretty used to people who spoke like that thanks to muggle school, and she wasn't the kind of person who judged people by how they looked or spoke as long as they were good at heart. She even remembered standing up for plenty of such people whenever they got bullied, because that was something that happened pretty often.

"I'm Mellani Miller, she/her, First Year Slytherin", she said, smiling. She didn't know what else to say. She still had to look up a bit to see the other boy, and she wondered, not for the first time that day, if she too should join him on the tree.
