One sunny afternoon in May
If someone were to ask Dee how she had ended up in the duelling room this fine afternoon, refereeing what was almost certain to be a delightful chaos of only moderately competent kids throwing around all the fun spells they had learned this year - to what degree of proficiency would remain to be seen - Dee would likely shrug and say something along the lines of "Seemed entertaining." Maybe she'd add that she had been a duelling captain for two years, after all, and missed watching children setting each other on fire.

There was even some truth to that. She had been a captain, and she did miss it. Leading her team in practice, supervising duels for the championship... ordering people around. She'd rarely felt more proud than when her team had won the championship last year.

But all that was, of course, too honest and vulnerable to share out loud, so it would remain unsaid, but the fact that she had volunteered to watch over this little event spoke for itself. (Still, it was entertaining to watch people set each other on fire. At least a little.)

She didn't even know half of the people participating in this. There was Hui Ming, of course, who she had blessed with her wonderful duelling wisdom in this very room before. He'd become a prefect and a duelling captain for the Slytherin team since then, so she must've done something right. He was teaming up with... what's-his-face, that new Slytherin prefect. Huh. A year ago she would've learned all the new prefects' names immediately. Well. Maybe she'd remember him after today, if he was sufficiently impressive.

The second team participating was made up of Hufflepuffs. Clark, the screechy little part-goblin, who kept forgetting not everyone spoke Gobbledegook. She didn't think he was a duellist. Was he? She was probably about to find out. Clark was partnered with someone who, in Dee's opinion, looked way too old to be fighting first and second years, but hey, who was she to judge?

The third team, however, was made up of people Dee both knew and liked. Bea was her declared grandprefect and a duellist, and she seemed to have good sense... also, she laughed at Dee's jokes and was kind of adorable, both plus points. Raizel, on the other hand, had impressed Dee with her insanity tenacity during their previous meeting, in which even repeated failure and being pummeled by several spells hadn't seemed to convince her that maybe duelling someone three years of experience ahead of you wasn't the smartest thing to do as a first year. Perhaps she'd learned something in the meantime?

Now, Dee was sitting cross-legged to the side of their makeshift duelling area, watching the three pairs prepare. She gave Ming a friendly wave, then grinned at Bea and winked at Raizel. Finally, she clapped her hands and hopped to her feet. She needed to be able to dodge possible stray spells, after all. "Alright, I hope you're all ready! I doubt you all can do too much damage, but I expect you'll listen if I tell you to pause or stop. If you do lasting damage to each other, it'll be awkward for me. Spells only and all that, I hope you know the rules." She paused, but not long enough for anyone to actually disagree. "It's time to duel!"

If there were anything he needed to beware of, it would’ve been nice to know at this point- no matter how unfortunate. He would force himself to get out of bed and put himself through a day of moaning and suffering.

Orrrr, he could just skip whatever was going on- and hang out in the duelling room- he had never been in there- but he had heard that the duelling room contained galleons, and what sucker doesn’t love money- especially a greedy part goblin like himself? Well- a child nevertheless.

He took his wand, and entered the Duelling room with a smile. “HERE’S CLARK!”

He would be unapologetic and sincere with his look to anyone who dared to glance his way. The important thing was that Clark was totally cuter than everyone else and therefore the most important person in the room.

“So, who are you?” He asked Dee. “I’m the sweetest person at Hogwarts. I’m Clark.”

Obviously he had no say in interacting with others but he saw himself as the best person to ever grace the grounds of Hogwarts.

He was worthier- at least in his mindset- than the Headmaster. He was certain that he deserved to skip the goings of the day and to make himself appear worthier than the meager students that cross his path.

Donald had heard a rumor that the dueling club had become very active recently. He'd hesitated too much the first time around to get on the Hufflepuff team, but he had to check out the space. It was a nice afternoon with some free time to get out there and explore a new thing. The Hufflepuff boy had a good arsenal of spells, a good grasp of the concepts from reading, and was ready to conquer a new adventure.

He appeared at the Dueling Club doorway and peeked inside for a moment before fulling committing to entry. It was a great feeling and suddenly he felt really at home. Maybe it's because he spent years as a young child pretending to magic fight. Maybe it was all the movies he saw, too. Either way, the Muggle Fish turned Wizard Fish was excited to be here.

Before he even knew what to do, teams were forming, and the only other Hufflepuff in arm's reach became Donald's partner. He didn't really know the kid, but sure. This was unofficial, so pressure was small, but he wanted to make a good impression.

"Hey, I'm Donald." He'd say to both his partner and to the person who seemed in charge, Dee. "Spells only, no punching, got it."

As an aspiring duelist, Raizel is always ready to take on challenges that will help her in this path that she had chosen and by experience means any dueling game or event that she might've heard of. Even if she gets paired against someone who is a lot more experienced and skilled than her, she'll take them on without hesitation. People can call her insane or reckless but… as long as she doesn't feel any danger to her life in doing so, then she will accept the trials with open arms. A little bit of bruising is worth the experience and knowledge that she'll receive. As they say, no pain, no gain.

Dueling games or events aren't usually held that frequently even in this school of magic, she will sign up for anything that comes up, no matter how hard it'll be or how scary and skilled her opponents will be. Take this crazy 2v2v2 as an example. For all she knows, most people that might be participating in this event are older and experienced students but she still signed up. Oh the relief she had when she saw some familiar faces upon entering the dueling club.

It's gonna be moderated by none other than the merciless Ravenclaw student, Dealla Prince. That's right, she's the type of person who will still give it her all even if you're a few years younger than her and that's what Raizel liked about her. If anything, she'd rather get treated seriously in duels, finding those people who go easy on their underclassmen rather annoying. How would she learn if they don't even treat the practice duel seriously and that's rather insulting. Then again, this is all her opinion. Others might love being shown mercy in a duel that's not in their favor.

She's teamed up with someone that she knows too and she will admit, she still feels bad about the fact that the day she had caught her and a certain Slytherin student fighting in the corridors was her first day as prefect. It's none other than the prefect, Beatrice Langstreth. While she hasn't caught a glimpse of her dueling matches just yet, the Ravenclaw prefect is quite a duelist. She will be able to see her skills before her eyes as she will be fighting alongside her. Raizel turned her head towards the prefect, a smile present on her face. "Hope this turns out well." She told her before looking over to Dealla, giving her a nod of acknowledgement upon seeing her.

Glancing at their opponents, some were quite familiar, especially one of the guys in the Slytherin team. Avery Leveret, the first ever person that she met before coming into Hogwarts and now, a prefect. In a way, she kind of saw him as one and perhaps, it suits him. Who would've thought that he would join this one but with his hunger for knowledge or experience, he wouldn't let this one pass which is understandable. She is kind of like that, she'll do anything to get experience as long as it doesn't put her life in grave danger. He'll be dueling with an older student. Who would've thought that it would be her close friend's brother, Fang Hui-Ming. Another duelist.

Man, this game sure caught the attention of big shot duelists. It was unnerving for someone like Raizel who is still very inexperienced to this but she remained calm. Letting the nerves get to her would just make it worse and she signed up for this. Grin and bear it. The last group seems like they are beginners just like her although one of them looked quite old. Who knows what tricks they have in store. Better not underestimate them either although one of them seems annoying. Clark Baird, the half-goblin. She doesn't know him that well but he sure is so full of himself like the world revolves around him but… whatever. Donald... just Donald. Yes, she doesn't know a lot about him either. This is probably the first time she's seeing him.

When Fang Hui-Ming knew not what motivated him to be here. Perhaps it is the palpable improvements to his dueling, as evidenced by the latest stage of duels that had bolstered his confidence to practice in front of others. Perhaps he had been interested to see firsthand how Beatrice had grown since making it into the dueling circuit. Maybe he just wanted to try his hand at impressing the former Captain Prince. He might just have wanted to take part for once, instead of being the grim overseer of these events.

Whatever his reasons, the bespectacled second-year had shown up in casual attire. Perhaps not the best clothing for getting into a duel. But he was here not as an official representative of his House, but as a student intending to have some fun. He nodded in acknowledgment Miss Pr- Errr. Dealla's wave, and even gave her (what he hoped was) a small and friendly smile.

His eyes looked over the other people who had assembled: from another Duelling captain, to another Slytherin Prefect, to an older kid, to a Professor's child, to--

Huh.

He did not know Miss Langsreth's partner. Odd, for he had made note of most of the people on the regular dueling circuit. He'd have to take note of her tendencies and abilities, should she make it into her house.

"So many new faces we have assembled here today."
Hui-Ming's words were precise and perfectly enunciated, even if they had a thoughtful quality about them. He twirled his wand absently, in his left hand, his eyes looking over his opposition. "How very wonderful."

When she'd been asked to participate in this duel, Bea hadn't been so sure. She'd just come out of participating in her official duel last month and Prefect duties were hating up. Something about the end of year really made people go crazy. But she'd been intrigued. Especially when she heard about the format of the duel and who was participating. The snakes verses badgers verses eaglions as her own team had been dubbed. The format was a reminder of her first ever duel - the Summer Duelling Extravaganza. A 2v2v2. It was bound to be chaos and fun all bundled into an afternoon of spell-slinging.

The people made it even better. Dee had agreed to moderate this craziness, and as Beatrice walked into the Duelling Club she warmly waved to her grandprefect as she passed by on the way to the benches to put her stuff down. Just a drink bottle and quite possibly the jumper she was wearing. "Hi Dee! Thanks for doing this!"

The young red-head was excited for this afternoon, her body radiating with the electricity. As well as Dee, Bea knew the two snakes, Fang Hui-Ming and Avery Leveret. Hui-Ming was a positive acquaintance, and when she'd heard of him in today's fun, the girl had grown curious. She'd watched his match before last, plus been involved in his snakes verses birds duel, so she knew he had good sense. But apparently that didn't apply to Mr Leveret. Why on earth had Hui-Ming agreed to partner with Avery? Because they were both prefects in the same house? Bea quite rightly remembered the duel between herself and Leveret back in February, just before both of them had become prefects. The fond memory of setting Avery on fire came back to her. She nodded at them both. Towards Avery she smirked, "Ready to go again Leveret? It's like you just want to be incendio'd." She swivelled her head towards Hui-Ming. "Hi Hui-Ming! Poor choice of partner if I do say so myself." At that she glanced at Avery to see his reaction. It was always fun riling up a possible friend.

The two badgers she didn't know. Oh she'd heard around the school about one. The chaos-causing Clark Baird. His reputation preceded him. Her face had furrowed when she heard he'd be in today's duel. He wasn't a duellist she thought. And neither was his partner Fish-something or other. She hadn't really heard of him. Bea had shrugged them being here off though. She herself hadn't been a proper duellist until April this year, only practicing in unofficial duels like this one. She nodded hello as she passed them both, curious as to their potential.

The one person above all else Bea was glad to see was Raizel. Bea was absolutely brimming with excitement to be the other girls partner in all of this. They'd met previously, on Beas very first day as prefect actually, when Raizel and a Slytherin boy had been duelling in the corridors. A messy detention served, Bea was glad the girl had taken her advice about spell-slinging. Beatrice made a mental note to ask Rai whether she had joined her houses' duelling team.

Bea waved at her partner as she approached, and Bea smiled at her. "It will. My first ever duel was exactly like this." She turned to look at the other competitors, "Against foreigners too. It's a crazy fun time format! I'm glad you decided to take up my advice!" Bea jumped up and down, trying to warm herself up for the event about to happen. Once that was done, she did indeed take her jumper off. She'd get way to hot and knowing her luck, it would happen right in the middle of the duel. Turning back to Raizel with a twinkle in her eye, she joked, "Stayed out of trouble since I caught you? No more trips to the Hospital Wing right?"

Avery hadn’t expected Ming to ask him to join a spot of afternoon fun.

An assemblage of other students awaited them in what seemed to be the boundaries of some kind of makeshift duelling ground. The pale boy hadn’t even heard of a duel with these parameters ever taking place, less so witness or taken part in such; but this was valuable experience and it couldn’t be too different to the real deal. They were Viridian Vipers, and so they had a reputation to uphold; and this would make for good practice that could be called upon in future; so there was little reason to say no. Duelling had captured his heart, and he knew that Hui-Ming relished displays of controlled and efficient power; perhaps this duel would go better than that which Avery spectated back in February.

As usual, he was adorned in his perfectly pressed robes and school uniform, with not so much as a hair out of place. He wasn’t likely to appear particularly different, but he was representing the team today, sort of. His showing with Pea had gone positively, and in his opinion he thought he did most of the heavy lifting there; but he wasn’t going to hold that against her, especially as they seemed to hit it off rather well with several stolen glances. Part of him suspected that it would be the case here, but he didn’t mind. In fact, he rather appreciated the opportunity to carry another second year; that was certainly a good sign.

Such were his thoughts as he made his way over to Ming, who stood a distance away from the other students. Naturally he joined him in nodding to the moderator and then in assessing the surrounds, ebony eyes flicking to each participant; first Donald, and then Clark, and then only Clark. He had paused in his assessment, his jaw had tightened and he flexed it free as his mind raced with the endless ways in which he could ruin Clark’s day. Like Ming, he kept tabs on those who were on the official teams of their houses, and those he saw in the duelling room which he frequented often, so he could well be surprised; but to those observing this reaction he seemed oddly focused on Clark.

Wonderful, indeed. – The only one I don’t know is the ginger-...” His mind wandered as his mouth remained on task, as he glanced around to see if there were any of the usual spectators he had grown used to spying in the stand, before he rudely was pulled from this thought by Beatrice, who he rewarded with a scowl.

“Langstreth. - I hope you told Ms.Voltrouz that your strategy will rely mostly on luck. Hardly seems fair~” He mused, offering a small wave to Raizel with his free hand.

The contestants greeted each other, their partners mostly with friendly words, their opponents with... well, Dee wasn't quite sure how much of it was banter and how much was meant seriously, and she honestly didn't care much, either.

She did spare a raised eyebrow for Clark. Had he truly forgotten her or was this an intentional slight? Either way, it seemed more embarrassing for him than for her. "Did you get hit on the head or something? Or maybe your parents dropped you too often as a child? I know you're quite small, but that seems negligent. Clark, we know each other." And she knew the sweetest kid at Hogwarts was a lie.

Clark's red-haired partner got a shrug and a careless grin instead. Up close, he really did seem too old to be duelling with these kids. More like... Her age. But again, who was she to judge? "Sounds like you got the basics down. If you need another hint, point your wand at your opponents when you cast."

Everyone else seemed mostly eager to get started with the spell-slinging, so Dee gave them the go ahead, then watched at the commencing chaos... or lack thereof. She should've brought snacks.

In what appeared to be impressive foresight, both Slytherins had forgone casting spells this round, instead remained ready to dodge incoming attacks. A wise choice, considering that each of the other teams had picked one of them to focus on. Both Hufflepuffs were pointing their wands at Avery - heeding Dee's brilliant advice, very good - attempting to pick off the nimble snake. Although both Flipendo and Incendio were well-cast, and particularly the fire spell were decently aimed, neither hit the mark. Dee nodded, slightly impressed with the kids agility.

Bea and Raizel, on the other hand, were trying to do the same thing with Hui-Ming, but didn't see any more success. A tickling charm and the dancing feet spell, both went wide. Huh. Oh well. Dee wasn't too surprised by this turn of events. Really, it was mostly what she'd expected. Spells being cast, yet flying everywhere except their target.

"Hope you've been practicing your aim!" Dee called over to Raizel. "Even if it doesn't look like it," was added more quietly.

"One can never consent to creep when one feels an impulse to soar."

"I don't know what you're talking about." The boy would state plain and simple. "Shit. You're Dealla aren't you. From that- horrid thing I went to where I was targeted."

He still held a bit of a grudge, but not enough to remember it, against the halfblood thing held at Hogwarts.

He looked at his teammate, and just went off, grabbing out his Walnut wand, and desperately hoped the Pheonix Feather would find its true purpose, seeing as it was a mythical fire bird that seemed to be something that was real in such a horrifying world.

"INCENDIO!" He yelled, making the wand movement that went with the spell, in the sense of anger, as he saw Avery Leveret, the school's rat. He had to admit, he wished Avery was trapped in the Astronomy Tower, or maybe down in the dungeons in a snake pit somewhere if it even existed. It was the best feeling Clark had ever had, to let off steam, to exact his revenge against the boy who got a letter.

A letter talking about Ostara.

But the spell, while it was well aimed, just didn't hit the damn target, simply because the snakes were too dumb to even use their wands on Clark, at least, from his perspective.

And as though the snakes were of one mind, they immediately snapped to attention when the first syllable of silvery incantations, or the vexing sound of spells zipping and cracking at the ends of their opponents wands.

All notions of this being a for-fun game were clearly lost on Slytherin’s side of the makeshift ‘arena’, at least in the dark eyes of ebony that belonged to Avery. Like those of an owl in the night, they reacted to the smallest of signs; and his fleshy coil responded. – Both teams had picked one of the Slytherin boys to target, in what felt to him like a stitch up. Thankfully, he was right about Fang Hui-Ming.

The pair were alike in many ways, and their instincts were aligned in an almost uncanny manner; as they both recognised and adopted manoeuvres to avoid any of the incoming barrage. Fluid were his movements, as the beastly Clark’s flames soared just past his shoulder. He went to raise his wand in counter, but found he had to weave again as the ginger tried to place him with a Flipendo, leaning just out of reach to avoid a calamity.

A lock of dark hair was out of place following that round, as he huffed in derision at his opponents. Who on this earth did they think they were? He wasn’t one to talk smack too eagerly, but this felt personal; had Beatrice and Clark conspired? Had they truly been stitched up? – It wouldn’t stand. Now he and Ming had to win, and if that meant getting into the heads of their enemy; so be it.

“You’ll have to be better than that. - Though before you try again; what is it Gingers miss most at parties?” He called as he swept his hair from his face, a mirthful smile playing on the corner of his lips. Donald was seemingly his target to pick on, for no particular reason other than being the most recent and most unknown factor on the field; perhaps getting him worked up would reveal some vital insight.

“The invitation.” He followed up, in a particularly venomous tone that saw any trace of his smile evaporate; this was going to be fun.
