The Hufflepuff Table 2022-2023
@Wilby Gray
John sat down next to Wilby. “Nice to meet you,” he said. “I came from over there”—he gestured with his wand, which was duct taped to the inside of his sleeve, in the direction of a girl with messy dark hair—“and I’m going to sit here now.”
He smiled and stopped pointing. “How are you? My name’s John, and while I don’t really know what I’m doing here, what are your thoughts on this place? Maybe you want to ask me the same thing, and you can go first or I can.” He paused briefly. “There’s so much to look at and think about, and everything I see makes me feel so lucky. Like these green beans. I didn’t grow up magical, by the way.”
“Oh, and I think I lead with ‘how are you’, so the inverse of that would be ‘how am I’.” He took his eyes off the feast and glanced at Wilby, who remained shyly quiet. “I’m homesick. I wouldn’t give this up for anything though, except maybe my home.” The cute badger on the Hufflepuff crest reminded John of Viola, one of the cows. He imagined the badger was Viola as a rodent animagus, and he’d still recognize her because of that distinct sharp triangular eyepatch. He had devoured the House portion of A History of Magic in a single sitting with his back against Viola in the field. He didn’t remember much about Hufflepuff, but he was relieved to be in Hufflepuff and not in Slytherin, the House which fascinated him the most.

The Hufflepuff Table 2022-2023
@John Duarte
Wilby didn't know what shocked him more -- that someone had come and sat next to him, or that this someone didn't seem to lose interest in words. John must've been the most talkative person Wilby had ever met, and that was saying something; everyone here seemed to like to chatter.
But he didn't mind the company; no one else had bothered making conversation with him. Maybe he should take advantage of John's interest in him, and make a new friend. They were both in Hufflepuff as it was; they would likely be seeing a lot of each other. Absent-mindedly, Wilby wondered what kind of classes he would be having in a school like this, and how many of them would be with John.
"I'm homesick," John continued, "I wouldn’t give this up for anything though, except maybe my home.”
John paused for a breath and Wilby jumped in: "Hi I'm Wilby." Why did it feel like that was the first thing he had said since leaving home? "What do you mean, you didn't grow up magical?" he pushed, glad that he didn't have to start this conversation. He preferred that it flowed more naturally -- from someone else, preferably.
And John was perfect at starting conversations. In fact, Wilby wasn't sure that John hadn't just tried to start three separate conversations.
He could tell this was already a good match.

“Both my parents are Muggles, so therefore I am one too,” John explained. “You don’t mind, do you? I read this book, A History of Magic I think it was called, and it said you wouldn’t mind. Since we’re together in Hufflepuff, you know. I feel like if you told the Hat you found people like me revolting, you’d be at that green table.” He placed a peppermint humbug in his mouth and bit down loudly, then slid the wrapper to Wilby as if they were passing notes.
Even without a verbal response from Wilby, John already felt that he’d found his people. He had been unsure of whether he would fit in amongst the purebloods and halfbloods, but Wilby’s pleasant manner made him feel at home. It also helped that Wilby’s hair looked familiar; it was much like his own and his dad’s. “The Hat’s pretty good at decision making,” he said.
“Oh, were you up there for a while? I didn’t notice, if it makes you feel any better, and the person next to me only brought it up after the person next to her mentioned it. Which,” John reflected, “actually, I don’t think that’ll make you feel better. They didn’t sound judgemental at all though. Also, I think Wilby’s a really cool name.”
