Interlude -- Out of the Chessboard
As Hiro-san hugged him, Akira gave the boy a weak tweak of the lips before focusing on his single-minded task: Approaching their Champion, and giving him a piece of his mind as he inserted himself into Shamsi and Hiroi-san's conversation.
So, how did he expect Shamsi to respond to his barbed accusations when he made them? How would he expect anyone to respond? He didn't quite know, but it certainly wasn't what he got. What he got was not a "Yes, it was more violent than what anyone imagined, and I didn't mean for this to happen". It was not a "No, it wasn't very fun and I'm sorry that the team had to go through this". It wasn't an "Unfortunately, there was simply no other way to go about it". What he got was a tirade of thorns that returned his favor ten times harder (at least that's what it felt like to our prideful Akira).
'What remarkable contribution did he make'? "Nothing, that's what. You had ONE JOB. To protect and heal, and look at where that got us," Shamsi dug, hard, throwing Akira's own shortcomings back into his face. The Japanese boy clenched his jaw and scowled. F***. Maybe if he had been capable of casting stronger shields and healing spells... Maybe if he had been quicker in getting into the right positions... Maybe if his attacks had been better-aimed... Then, maybe Narumi, Midorimori-senpai, and Hitoshi-senpai wouldn't be in their beds right now, and his other teammates could've suffered less from their blows...
Hiroi-san's wise, true, and empathetic words passed through his ears as if they were a breeze.
No, he could not back down to what Shamsi just said. His pride wouldn't allow it. To back down would be to admit to himself and others that he was inadequate. It was a strange thing, pride. And it was atomic if more than one person had it.
"No. I have to say this," he growled, shooting a glare at the innocent Hiroi. "He singled me out, so you stay out of this." His tone was brusque and cold, so counter to the kind girl's own nature. On any other day, he might've felt guilty doing so. Maybe, if he had more of a conscience.
A delicious absolutely irritating stick of meat was shoved into his mouth. He grabbed hold of it and tore it out.
He turned his daggers back at Shamsi. Eyes of fire that no longer contemplated how Shamsi could possibly have doubt, demons, or guilt of his own. "I'm not the problem here, Shamsi, as much as you'd like to think I am. No one else is going to say it here, but I dare to: I just don't know if you have what it takes to be Mahoutokoro's Champion." He skimmed his dark eyes across the beds in the room. "We might've won, but too narrowly. This is all your doing because of that crazy mindset of 'fun' that you have. No; this is a war, Shamsi, and what we just saw was just a battle. So I hope you freaking treat it as such. I don't want to follow someone who is weak," he tore into his teammate ruthlessly, wanting his words to hurt the Indian boy as much as his had hurt him, or even more. "Just start by admitting what we saw was a sh*tshow already!" he found his voice rising as the embers rose, eyes challenging his Champion. His voice almost cracked at the last sentence. Scenes of carnage flashed back into his mind's eye. No, he had to hold back those unhelpful emotions of weakness, block out the noise.
Hitoshi-senpai awoke at the opportune time, so he could distract himself for just a moment. "Hitoshi-senpai," he said, coming to the upperclassman's bedside attentively, and putting down his last dorayaki box. "How are you feeling? Would you like something to eat?" Akira wasn't sure if his senpai would notice the tension in the air and the remnants of the still-burning flames across the room.

Ginyami was drawn from the deep realm of unconsciousness by the sound of familiar voices talking and the strong smell of spiced foreign foods. Unlike many of the others, the knight had been struck by more mental than physical attacks, so he was largely unhurt. What few injuries he had sustained had already been tended to by the healers, however, so when he came to, he felt right as rain.
The last thing he had remembered before passing out was Hiro coming to help him off the chessboard. When he woke up, however, it was Akira's voice he heard first thanking him for his bravery. Ginyami's drowsy mind, clouded by fatigue, was still vaguely processing the words when he heard that same voice turn a very different tone on someone else. His eyes slowly fluttered open and he blinked a couple of times before attempting to push himself up into a sitting position on the hospital wing bed.
There was food everywhere. All kinds, too, from Akira's dorayaki boxes and Chiaki's sweets to Aryaan's large banquet of what Ginyami could only assume were Indian foods from the strong scent of their spices and rich colors. They were positively distracting; so distracting that for a moment the fourth year forgot the angry words he had woken up to being exchanged by his passionate kohais.
As they continued, though, he was quickly reminded of them again and tried to clear his throat politely in order to get their attention for a moment. Chiaki's and Hiro's attempts to mediate hadn't gone unnoticed and Ginyami wondered if he could try to pick up where they had left off - for their sake and the others'.
"We have a team of some of the youngest students taking part in the Hexwizard tournament. Yet, from what I heard Shimizu-san just say, it seems as though we won, however close a call that might have been." Narrow, slitted kitsune eyes looked from Akira to Aryaan, appraising them seriously. "Are we going to throw that away by tearing down one another by picking at each other's faults and flaws? Because I have a feeling we're already each beating ourselves up mentally for what we could and should have done better without being told by our teammates."
He raised an arm to gesture at Chiaki curled up against a wall. "Shimizu-san, your feelings are valid and you have a right to speak your mind. But can't someone as intelligent and clever as you find a way to speak it without trampling all over the voices of others? And Shamsi-san," the teen continued, tilting his head slightly, "As our champion, don't you have a better way to motivate your team into improving themselves than to rip into their shortcomings? I imagine you must be feeling pretty guilty if this feast of Indian food is any indication. But I'm certain you know better than to distract yourself from that guilt by finding fault with your followers."
He sighed softly and picked up a piece of one of Chiaki's sweets. "Honestly, regardless of the mistakes that were made and actions that could have been done better, I'm really impressed with everyone. I wish you could be as proud of yourselves as I am of this team. We really did a spectacular job overall and I think we all deserve to be a little kinder to ourselves and each other. Especially after what we just went through."

Interlude -- Out of the Chessboard
"Mm! Of course! I just got overly excited upon seeing you relatively healthy again!" Sara showed a scary smile to the boy, brightened by his response. Although he had an unvering way of showing it. “I understand. Thank you “ That was pretty much the last positive thing that happened so far.
Annnnnndd this was not what Sara expected to happen. How did it come to this? The tinted shades of his sunglasses did nothing to give him the ignorance of not knowing the tension that was brewing among Aryaan and Shimizu. That was..not what friends say to one another. Amongst the bitter words exchanged and accusations thrown, Sara, at that moment, resembled the person-standing emoji.
But with sunglasses.
Unable to tear his eyes away from the scene, and yet too frozen to speak. Person-standing-emogi, indeed. With each hurtful word they two 2nd years said to one another might as well been directed to him as well. He winced, eyebrows furrowed and frown deepened like never before. It hurt. He wasn’t the only one that felt it too. Chiaki, the braver between the two, even tried to stop them. Only to be shut down by Shimizu, who wasn’t finished with what he wanted to say. The girl backed up and found comfort at the edge of the room where the walls touched her back. Sara had half the mind to join her, but he was frozen in place. Should he say something? How could someone like him encourage them to back down? Was this going too far already?
Hiro, being a Hero tried to soothe them with another method apart from words. Food. That ended up being quite inefficient as it didn’t stop the two. Sara’s chest clenched uncomfortably. If that didn’t work, then what will?
Perhaps Midorimori’s words would strike some sense between the two boys. The more he spoke, the more Sara felt the discomfort in his chest beginning to unravel, suddenly easier to breathe. It would be the boy’s wisdom that healed Sara’s frozen state. And by some miracle, Sara found unusual confidence in his words. “ ‘Aryaan should’ve done more’ “ he said suddenly with a deadpanned tone, as if a robot merely repeating what was said. “ ‘Aryaan wasn’t worth all this’ . ‘Shimizu's fault they weren’t healed enough’ . ‘Shimizu should’ve dodged more’ .” His voice grew softer as he looked between Aryaan and Shimizu through his dark sunglasses. “ Is…is that truly..what you both feel about the task? About each other? Or..is it like Midorimori said. Was it just easier to say all that than admit something else?”.
Anger was a powerful tool, really. Could say a lot of things and not really mean it, but in that moment of heated fury nothing felt more right. More justified. More real than the words that were said. And yet almost all of it would be regrettable in the next moment. Sara should know. Anger was an old friend of his. The dark shades of his sunglasses didn’t hide their fury filled eyes when they continued to argue. Afterall, it was easier to hide other emotions under this thing called ‘anger’. Sara could not help but wonder if the two boys had it in them to find it. Or was this just not the right time?
Finding comfort in Midorimori’s words, Sara took off his sunglasses for a full minute. Puffy eyes. The after effects of crying that he had tried to hide from his teammates. Because he had thought it was weak. Something he had to deal with on his own. Perhaps, he was wrong. This didn’t have to be something he had to fix alone. Recalling the words Aryaan and Shimizu said to each other, Sara’s puffy eyes were covered quickly again with his sunglasses
“If it is then… then..” he trailed off, never finishing his sentence. Too distracted by the familiar sting in his eyes. It would be best not to speak further. He had said more than enough. Ginyami was correct in many ways. He was already having trouble navigating through the horrors of the hex wizard tournament. He couldn’t bear it if those harsh words were directed to him. It would’ve felt much harsher than anything he could have said himself. Frankly, it was the last thing he wanted to hear. And if it continued, he was quite tempted to just leave.
Aryaan was his friend, and Shimizu seemed like a reasonably mature young boy that Sara respected. But he had yet to see how they dealt with anger. Sara had seen enough people who would have waved Midorimori off, more than eager to continue what they started. He hoped more than anything that it wasn’t the case. However, he could not be as confident as Midorimori “ Up to you. N-no pressure. Sorry “ he pushed back his sunglasses, making sure they were in place. If they did such a thing, Sara couldn’t help but feel sorely disappointed. If that was how Aryaan or Shimizu saw it, Sara was less than comfortable with talking about how he felt about what happened. Even when he said nothing, his discomfort should have been obvious to most.
Thinking he had said enough, he walked towards Chiaki and kneeled beside her. She would feel a gentle pat on her hair, the same gentle way he would pet a cat. “ Here “ Sara dug into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief. It was one that had a cat embroidered on it. Given by his friend, Winnie. Before he knew it, the item had somehow become something that exuded a soothing aura. One that vaguely reminded him of Chiaki. An item Sara would have no problem sharing with someone who needed it more. “ It’s okay “ If Chiaki accepted it, she could use it all she liked. If not, Sara would give an understanding nod and place the item back into his pockets. Regardless, she would be given a comforting pat on her shoulder before Sara got up again. @Chiaki Hiroi @Pax Zhang
He gave a respectful bow towards Hitoshi. The guilt crushed him as if they were weight on his shoulders. This was not the sight he wanted the senior to wake up to. He had almost wanted to apologise on behalf of everyone, but thought better of it. “It’s nice to see you well, senpai “. Were they going to continue talking about the tournament? Or was it going to be brushed under the rug for the sake of not fighting? Perhaps that would depend on Shimizu and Aryaan, and how they would carry forward with what Midorimori said. Still, he allowed himself to be at ease seeing the older boy’s healthier complexion. Poor guy, waking up to mild madness such as this. @Hadashi Hitoshi @Dan Palmer
Sara would end up beside Midorimori’s bed in the end, giving him a curt appreciative nod“ T-thank you “ He muttered, certain he didn’t need to explain what he was thankful for. Through the dark lenses of his sunglasses, Sara tilted his head as he scanned the other boy. “ Are you…?” For someone who had just been KO-ed, he had such a smooth way of talking earlier with his words of wisdom. Sara almost couldn’t believe he had just been recently knocked out cold. @Ginyami Midorimori@Jack Burnett

Interlude -- Out of the Chessboard

Hadashi narrowed his eyes. The aura in the room was not what he expected from a team that just won a match. And as the best duelist in Mahoutokoro, he knew what a winning team's aura was supposed to feel like.
Then, he remembered what he had heard. He had just brushed it off as 'Oh Im waking up and hearing things, okay.'
Apparently, this was much worse. Shamsi and Shimizu were at each other again. In a hospital room, no less.
Not even a victory will keep those two from trying to kill each other. Hadashi knew he would probably have to step in yet again, but Midorimori-san stepped in first. A gentle hand. Well, that was that covered. Now, for the other half. Hadashi was stuck being the stick yet again.
"We are in a hospital room, a room of recovery, after winning a match in a very important tournament. And you two are fighting again. I'm unconscious for.... Im not sure actually, but not very long. And you are at it. Is this what you two do when my back is turned?"
Hadashi admonished them both, as he did not know who has instigated this one, though he had his suspicions that it was Shimizu-kun. He did not know what he could possibly have had to complain about; They had won. Did they have some losses, sure. And Hadashi would not forget what Narumi did. But a victory did not constitute an argument.
"We won. Put aside personal problems with each other and enjoy yourselves."
Just in case he was right about Shimizu starting it, he decided that, just this one time, he would have Shamsi's back. As weird as it felt. And boy, did it.
Hadashi turned to Shimizu, addressing him directly about a claim he heard.
"Shimizu-kun. Shamsi-kun was acting under my orders. Having him involved in the fighting would have been a severe tactical mistake. You do not put your game-ending important piece in the line of fire. I had him tucked away as safe as possible so that we could freely pick apart and outlast our opponents."
He then looked at Shamsi.
"And well executed, Shamsi-kun. I'd say my strategy worked pretty well, wouldn't you?"
He ended it with the slightest of winks.
"Now. Tell me what all these dishes you brought are. I'm curious."

| ─── | Tone's attempts to mediate did not work.
Not this time at least, which was a shame. Every now and then, some delicious food did tend to work. But apparently not this time. A sigh escaped his lips as he wondered if he'd have to physically get between them to make them calm down. He wasn't adverse to doing so, Tone would sacrifice anything about himself to have his friends get along with eachother. It wasn't as if he himself meant anything to anyone. Akira's voice was rising, which didn't bode well, until Hadashi finally woke up. Yami woke up soon afterward. Tone was relieved when they regained consciousness. The teen didn't like it when his friends were unconscious.... Under normal circumstances, he would have launched forward to hug them both. But now was not the time to do so. Especially when Hadashi and Yami's words seemed to have affected both boys (Aryaan and Akira). Maybe even Sara had played a part in bringing rising tensions down again. If Hadashi, Yami and Sara's words hadn't calmed the two down, Tone did have a new idea to put forward. But he was fairly certain it wouldn't come down to that, at least not right now. After all, who would go against Hadashi, other than Kao? Aki and Yan didn't seem like they would, right? "Like Yami and Hadashi said, we won the first task! We emerged victorious!" "Even if it was a close win, we should celebrate it! But since it was a close win, that means we could have lost like Akira said before. Therefore, we all need to strategize more, prepare for the worst outcome, and figure out a way to succeed in case it comes true. Let's all be positive, put our heads together and practice before the second task starts! If we can achieve this, I'm sure we'll be able to continue our winning streak again!" Tone said, hoping to bring them together. They were still all part of a team. Mahoutokoro. The main goal was to get their school to win. To do that, they all needed to work together. "I'd suggest we should start strategizing sometime tomorrow. But today we should all take a break, rest our bodies and minds, and celebrate our win. We all need little breaks now and then." Tone said, trying to get everyone to see his point of view. They'd had a big day today and it was essential that they rest tonight for the following days to come would be hard... Hopefully, Yami, Hadashi, Sara and Tone's words would get through to Akira and Aryaan this time. |

Interlude -- Out of the Chessboard
The tunnel of flames that was his own anger closed in around Shamsi, and for a moment, that was all he could see: His hurt, inadequacy, and fury all channeled towards his Champion. His dark eyes dared Shamsi to respond to his accusations with deeper insults. He felt he was offering himself up for the slaughter. Maybe he deserved it; to be torn into until he was but a wisp in the wind, shreds shriveling in the embers into ash.
He would divert his eyes momentarily as Midorimori-senpai spoke. Slowly, the scowl from Akira's pale face mellowed into a frown. Some of his words struck a chord; how was it that Midorimori-senpai knew seemed to know how he was feeling? For a moment, Akira's eyes diverted to the side, considering his senpai's understanding but firm words as he pointed out each person's strengths and flaws. It seemed that nothing escaped his senpai's kitsune gaze. He nodded, slowly and once, to show he heard. His assessment had been very fair.
"We really did a spectacular job overall and I think we all deserve to be a little kinder to ourselves and each other. Especially after what we just went through." Really? Was he actually deserving of this feast, and the potentially cheerful company of his teammates whom he had forsaken? Akira still had his doubts, but his fists unclenched.
He turned his face away as Kohana-senpai spoke. Yes, it was much easier to throw blame at Shamsi than admit his own faults out loud. Was it really how he felt about his Champion? Akira bit his lower lip. He glanced at Kohana-senpai briefly as the boy took off his sunglasses. Were his eyes puffier than usual? Had he been... crying, again? Akira frowned, remembering how distraught his senpai was during the task. But then, his senpai's eyes quickly disappeared behind sunglasses again, and he was left to wonder by himself what he had just seen. Perhaps, he wasn't the only one who had been impacted, but unwilling to show any weakness. Again, he thought back to Shamsi's awkward countenance as they entered the hospital wing together; was it guilt? Perhaps, each of them had their own burdens to bear. They just manifested in different ways. He considered speaking out and asking Kohana-senpai about it out of concern, but decided he didn't want to prod.
It was Hitoshi-senpai's words that made him snap out of it. "Yes, Hitoshi-senpai," he said mechanically and obediently. Indeed, it probably wasn't the right time to make a scene right now. But, it had been so hard to rein in the beast that was Akira's anger. He clenched his teeth and lowered his eyes.
Hiro-san's bright and cheery voice rang in his ears. Sometimes, it was difficult to concentrate on his demons when his friend's voice cut through his inner thoughts. Slowly, Akira exhaled. "So, Hiro-san, what was that meat you gave me earlier?" he asked, forcing himself to relax a little. However, he was not well enough to face Shamsi just yet, or poor Hiroi-san's crumpled form in the corner, or Kohana-senpai's puffy eyes. By not approaching them in their emotional states, he could hope to keep his composure, contain his barbed anger, and focus on the delicious distractions as well.

| ─── | Tone regarded Akira.
He could tell Akira was trying to hold back his feelings. But it was hard for someone like him to do so. Tone knew this, although he wasn't sure if anyone else felt the same way as him. The pink haired teen resisted the urge to move forward and embrace Akira. Even if Akira might have needed something like this, he didn't think he would accept it right now. Therefore, Tone wouldn't do it, for Akira's sake. He glanced over at Hadashi as Akira spoke to him with an almost instinctual response and looked back over at Akira as he spoke to him. "Some kind of Indian meat kebabs, I think? Yan brought them." Tone told him. "It's tasty, isn't it?" He asked with a smile. They were all a little worse for wear when it came to emotions right now, but Tone had faith they could come out of this stronger. They just needed to loosen up a bit more. Which was easier said than done. Especially when it came to Yan and Akira. But Tone had always been able to make peace between them. At least for a short period of time. The pink haired teen had faith he could do it again too. Tempers and emotions were running high right now though because of the Hexwizard Tournament. And all the things it represented and meant to everyone. Tone hoped they could all get along together at some point because if they were divided later, it would spell out disaster for Mahoutokoro. But for the next stage, he'd be taking part in it too. Maybe he could ensure things went a bit smoother this time. Well, if he got a chance to do this. |
