Interlude -- Out of the Chessboard
Roleplaying as Aryaan Shamsi of Mahoutokoro

Backdated to October 24, 2022
The entrance to Hogwarts Hospital wing was quiet, and all Aryaan Shamsi could hear from within was the gentle rustling of sheets and the occasional murmur of moving between beds. The First Task of the Hexwizard Tournament had been some completed the hours before, and it had been both better and worse than the Mahoutokoro Champion would have imagined. Better, because they had won handily in the end – Big Blue had all but ascertained their victory. And worse because of what it had cost him.
Shamsi had never been too worried about scrapes and bruises – they were all part of life, and honestl there was nothing that a day with the mediwitches would not make good as new. Or so he had thought.
But here he is, whole and unhurt while his friends were the ones to bear the brunt of his arrogance. He would never admit it out loud, but watching Chi and Sara-senpai getting hurt had tugged at him in a way that solid, bulky Narumi taking a hit never had. The way even him being hurt would not have worried him. But he was not hurt, was he? That role was deferred to others – braver and stronger people who had volunteered their time and their bodies as fodder for the entertainment and politics of the viewers.
Shamsi had always known that the Triwizard Tournament would be dangerous, but he had never expected it to make him feel sick to his stomach. The challenges in the First Task had been beyond anything he could have imagined, even knowing what the Task was – and though he had survived the task unscathed, he did not know if he could ask his friends to go through that for him again.
He had wanted to prove to his family and his friends and his school that he was worthy of the honor of being chosen as a champion, that he was capable of facing the most fearsome challenges in the wizarding world and emerging victorious. His age and robe color be damned. But instead, he had stumbled, and found that it was not himself he was betting in these Tasks after all.
Shamsi would not lie to himself, it was not his heroics that had won the day for Mahoutokoro. It was Sara-senpai’s. And Akira’s. And Chi’s. And Narumi’s. And his seniors’ most of all. All he had done was show up and be the pretty little figurehead. And he had not done a great job of that.
And so, again, he finds himself here. He takes a deep breath, looking within for the cheer and energy required to push through with the task ahead. He had asked the rest of the team to meet him here, to meet up with Narumi and Ginyami-senpai, the two schoolmates who had been most grievously hurt in the battle with the Americans.
Aryaan pinched himself to try and snap out of the dark mood he found himself in. He needed to get through this, to make sure things are okay between him and his schoolm- his friends. Because yes, even the mighty Big Blue Hitoshi Hadashi-senpai would be considered his friend after that hellish little chess game.
And so he marched in to the hospital wing with the only apology he knew to give – plates of food, provided by his mother, floating in after him. It would not be the best apology, perhaps, but maybe it might be a good start to set to rights all that he had taken for his friends for granted.
He all but marched to Narumi’s bed – he knew Narumi much better than Ginyami-senpai and wasn’t sure he could face his upperclassman just yet anyway.
“Yoooooo,” he declared brightly. As if this was just another day that his errant friend has overslept. As if this was not the aftermath of a beating that the boy took because Shamsi had dared to think that his might have been fun. “I’ve brought some food – Ma (mother) seemed to think you might appreciate it.”
With a careful flick of his wand, he lowered the levitated plates brimming with food to the foot of the bed – the aroma of various types of spices filling the Hospital Wing with surprising speed. There was enough food there for a score of normal people – or perhaps half a dozen first years. Haryali kebabs, and sikhs, and roast chicken and palak paneer, salads and curries and sweets of more colors and consistencies than he wanted to think on.
Was he allowed to bring food in here? Maybe. Would he get into trouble for it? Probably. But he’d be darned if he let fear of a detention keep him from doing right by his friends.
“And… I might have invited some friends over” He said it casually, almost as if it was an afterthought, but the guilt was clear on his face for those that knew what to look for.

Word Count: 366 Mention: @Fang Hui-Ming as Shamsi, @Hunter Argentum as Chikao Date: October 24th 2022The previous day's events had been quite taxing on the young child, but not nearly as bad than the effects it had on some of her fellow teammates, who had been confined to the hospital wing as a result of such a vicious game. Whoever had managed to concoct such an event for the first task must surely have had a twisted mind, Chiaki believed. And that knowledge was no reassurance for what could be up ahead.
Nonetheless, Chiaki was still a girl of her word, so she would see this tournament through. Perhaps by the end, she could learn to be desensitized to the violence. Though, given the nature of the first task, she was not too confident in that endeavour. Violence seemed to run through this task, and she had been the one to deliver it time and time again. She supposed she had done right by her team, but this wasn't something she wanted to continue doing. Although herself hadn't experienced too severe injuries (only one painful hit from the opposing queen), she had seen many others take vastly more painful blows that she didn't wish even on her worse enemy.
These thoughts weighed heavily on her mind as she entered the hospital wing, arms filled with various sweeter foods. Shamsi-san had asked them to visit, and whilst she would've done regardless, she thought it courtesy to bring something for those injured. She placed it beside some of her fellow students' bedsides before joining Shamsi-san, who had seemingly brought his own delightful dishes. In comparison, what Chiaki had brought seemed like nothing, but she chose not to focus on it.
"Shamsi-san, Narumi-san, hello. May I talk to you, Shamsi-san?"
She would gently pull him aside by the elbow, lowering her voice a little. "I hope you do not blame yourself for what happened in yesterday's task. While, yes, it was more violent than I had initially imagined, I'm sure everyone knew what they were getting themselves in for."
Chiaki offered a small smile back to the boy, hoping that her words had reassured him even slightly. Then she would linger awkwardly, unsure what the plan had been once she had arrived.

Interlude -- Out of the Chessboard
It took a while to get the blood off him. He remembered just how terrible he looked after the tournament ended. Frankly, he was sure that he wasn’t the only one. Bruises, cuts, and smears of dried blood. He was no stranger to injury like this, being someone who does a lot of physical activity. If it was only him, perhaps he wouldn’t feel as uneasy as he did. But others had endured through it, some even not managing to be able to get through the whole chess match. The attacks, the hurtful screams, the tension. It was not something anyone could forget, and a few hours wouldn’t be enough.
He wasn’t sure what to think after all that. Proud that they won? Happy that not everyone he cared about was wiped off? Disappointed at the whole point of the hex wizard tournaments? Regretful of joining? It seemed that his mind was in disarray. Every one of those points had their own reasonings behind them, and yet it seemed to pull him further from the truth. The truth. Whatever truths that would help him determine what to do after this.
Perhaps..I should leave it at that. And see where this goes.
After they had received healing, his friend Aryaan had informed him of visiting the hospital wing. A request that made Sara very pleased ( as shown by his facial reaction that looked like he wanted to punch Aryaan for even suggesting such a thing ). It would be good to see their teammates that suffered more injuries than most of them. While he held concern for all those who ended up in this hospital bed, the one he would be most eager to see is Ginyami Midorimori. They were classmates for years after all. Thought they were didn't talk as much as Sara would have hoped, he still saw the other 4th year as one. He had been nothing but kind and courteous towards him, so it was quite natural to see Midorimori in a good light. Which only intensified as they were now a team in a task like the hexwizard tournament.
He arrived a tad bit late, after being distracted by the cute cats that casually roam around Hogwarts. His attire was nothing out of the blue, just in casual clothes in their regular dark colour scheme. Only now, a pair of sunglasses remain resting on the bridge of his nose. Why he decided to wear them indoors, was a mystery to curious minds. But his eyes were rather puffy from all the crying he did during the tournament. Everyone else was being strong for their group. He wasn’t too keen on reminding them of how weak he was.
The view that presented itself when he entered the Hospital Wing was a pleasant one that explained why he had been smelling something good all the way from the corridors. An array of food was served (were they even allowed to bring in this many?). And the sight of Narumi’s and Midorimori’s resting form allowed the air to be easier to breathe in. It was rather easy to spot Aryaan and Chiaki as well.
They seemed to be having a sort of discussion. He gave them a short wave before walking up to them. “ Hello “ his deep voice softened by the almost whisper he uttered to them. It still seemed too loud for him. Especially since they were in the hospital wing. The last thing he wanted was to wake patients up just from having this irritatingly gruff voice.
“ Apologies for being late. There were a lot of cute cats, outside. “ he explained gently, looking between the two younger years. “ I.. I am sorry. Am I interrupting something? “ . His eyes wandered towards the food next. “ That is... a lot of food. Are those all for Midorimori and Narumi-kun? “

────────────────────────────────────── MAHOUTOKORO ───────────
| ─── | It was Monday, October 24th, 2022.
The first task was over with various casualties. Tone had been at the hospital wing for quite some time now. He'd been at Kao, Yami, Hadashi, Risto, and Akira's side the most, fussing over them like a mother hen. Of course, when the nurses and healers came over, Tone instantly got out of their way. That was why he hadn't been thrown out of the place yet, unlike certain other people. Since he'd been at the hospital wing, he hadn't gotten the summons from Yan until later. Ironically enough, he got it a few minutes before Yan himself showed up at the area. Still fussing over some of the patients, Tone didn't instantly come over to greet him.... But it seemed it wasn't necessary, as Yan took the initiative to come over to Kao's bedside where Tone was. The smell of delicious food filled the air as Yan brought some levitating plates filled with food over to them. As Chiaki came over to them, Tone was glad she seemed decent enough and was relieved she didn't appear to have any lasting damage from competing in the first trial. He couldn't help himself and quickly crossed the short distance between the two of them and wrapped her up in a great big hug. Ah, it was good to see her up! "Chi!!!!!! I'm so glad you're doing well!" Tone only released her when Sara stepped into the room and ran over to try and do the same thing to him. "Sara!!!!!!!!!!!" Tone cried out, almost tackling the taller boy, as he tried to jump up onto Sara and wrap his arms around his neck. He didn't care if Sara allowed him to do so, tried to avoid his 'attack', or punted him. All he wanted was to show how happy he was to see him there! Sara seemed pretty good too, considering what he'd gone through during the trial. It was good to see everyone recovering well, it boded well for the next task to come. All the teen could hope for was that no one would be in true danger this time. He hadn't greeted Yan yet but that was only because Yan had seemed a bit occupied at Kao's bedside. Once he'd finished welcoming the others, he'd 'attack' Yan too. |

Interlude -- Out of the Chessboard
In contrast to his rough mummer, there was a far larger presence that failed to escape his attention. That presence being Hiro Bakugo, his friend. Someone that had been nice to him since the beginning. That being said, most people he knew in Mahou had been nice. If not nice, then at least very polite. Which is still nice. But he knew what it felt like when someone wanted to befriend you, and someone who talked to you because you somehow were in the same area. And he was quite unfamiliar with the first. So whatever Hiro had done, it was that. Or at least Sara hoped so. Who would’ve offered smiling lessons if they didn’t want to befriend you? He accepted the warm hug and gently patted the boy. Though his sudden screeching did surprise him quite a bit. He was not a fan of loud noises, but this one- he will make an exception.
“ It’s nice to see you too, Hiro” he said, giving into the tackle hug before releasing it and patting the younger boy’s shoulders. “ But..uh… maybe.. If it doesn’t bother you.. Maybe.. Perhaps just.. Be a taddd bit quiter? N-no pressure it’s just that we’re…” his suggestion trailed off as gently as he could, he gingerly gestured around the room. He made an exception but the rules certainly did not. Wasn’t it some sort of unspoken rule that you weren’t supposed to be loud in placed where sick and injured people gathered? He looked warily around the room, hoping no one was getting ready to scold his friend. But food was..okay? Maybe? His concern grew and it showed by the angry look on his face as he had a staring contest with the food presented. It was..nice food for the rest of the people. But was that allowed?

Interlude -- Out of the Chessboard
Somehow, he wasn't surprised when he received his Champion's summons to the Hospital Wing to visit Narumi and Midorimori-senpai. Shamsi had seemed quite stricken by the bloody aftermath of the chess board -- something about the look on the Indian boy's face and his more quiet demeanor was very different from the Shamsi that Akira was used to seeing.
Akira rubbed his sore jaw, which was still feeling the impact from that American girl's shield. He'd been grateful to the healers and Hiro-san who had attended to him, but there was still a lightly throbbing pain of- what? resentment? rage? shame? that emanated from the previously bloodied area of his face. Rage that someone had dared hurt him. Shame that he hadn't had the ability to evade it, or do damage to Stanwood of a similar or higher degree. Resentment... here, he was conflicted: To resent his Champion for not performing any helpful actions in line with his status as Champion for their team, or not? Shamsi had paled in comparison to Hitoshi-senpai, who Akira had believed to be a more fitting candidate for Champion, all along.
However, as he entered the Hospital Wing, and the fragrant spices hit his senses, he blinked, stunned to see a feast set up next to Narumi and Midorimori-senpai's beds. Was this Shamsi's doing? Had he actually thought to bring such fine condolences to those who had fallen? The dorayaki boxes he held in his hands seemed to pale in comparison, but he quietly set them next to Narumi's and Midorimori-senpai's bedstands nevertheless.
He hoped Narumi would appreciate them. God knows the boy deserved it after the pain he suffered defending Hitoshi-senpai. "Narumi," he would greet his teammate coolly. "I hope your voracious appetite hasn't returned, because these were quite expensive and I wouldn't want them wasted on you in one bite," he said levelly.
For Midorimori-senpai, he could actually show some empathy. "Thank you for your bravery, Midorimori-senpai," he would say with a bow of his head. "Accidents happen, but the way you continued to fight was admirable. Hopefully we can borrow your strength again in the next round."
The sight of Hiroi-san and Shamsi speaking caught is eye, and he decided he had to approach his Champion one time or another. After speaking with the bed-ridden teammates he would stand up to approach Shasmi. No, he decided, he wasn't going to soften in front of Shamsi's delicious feast, no matter how delicious (or savory, or grand, or tempting, or kind of a gesture) it was. A dark, nagging feeling came up upon him, and he let it eat whatever tiny bit of empathy he had inside of him. Hiroi-san would only get caught in the cross-fire.
"I hope you do not blame yourself for what happened in yesterday's task. While, yes, it was more violent than I had initially imagined, I'm sure everyone knew what they were getting themselves in for," he heard the girl say, and Akira decided to step in. "It was very much more violent than we imagined, but the blows would've hurt less if our Champion could've done more to return them, or at least helped us in some way," he said darkly. Speaking these words only riled him up further, and he dug deeper. "So, was it fun, Shamsi?" he asked, almost mockingly. "I know the point of the game is to protect you, but are you that worth protecting that we end up like this?" he almost spat as he gestured to Narumi and Midorimori-senpai. He felt his signature temper rise out of his chest, but he would keep it down for now by narrowing his eyes to slits.

Interlude -- Out of the Chessboard
Roleplaying as Aryaan Shamsi of Mahoutokoro

@Jack Burnett, @Bubba Mcgarry, @Avery Chen @Pax Zhang @Hunter Agentum @Hanako Tone @Dan Palmer
As people gathered, Ayaan Shamsi could not help but feel a tiny spike of anxiety rushing through his system. It was not the nervous energy he had when facing his parents, nor the spike of pre-match adrenaline. No. It was more like fear.
What was he scared of? That they'd call him a fraud? A fake? Not worthy? Those were things he had heard half a hundred times before. But. It set his nerves on edge now in a way he had never experienced before. He had never felt smaller than he did now, unable to measure up to the titanic task in front of him. Unable to face his friends out of shame and embarrassment.
The Hogwarts champion had done better than him, even as he hid behind his friends. The Koldov champion stood bravely to the end, surrounded and overwhelmed though he may have been. Even Durmstrang and the Beauxbatons--
Aryaan blinked, his smile back on his face as his mind swirled with dark thoughts. He jerked towards one of his guilt sources: Chiaki Hiroi. The gentle little girl with bright eyes full of innocence. And selfishly, he put her in the middle of danger. Could he have placed her as a bishop instead? Would it have mattered in the end? Maybe if he had--"May I talk to you, Shamsi-san?"
She said some kind words to try and make him feel better -- likely she had noticed that he was not being his bombastic self -- and he could not reply. What could he say? That no, they had not signed up for something this brutal? He himself would not have been so gung-ho about this all, had he known. That he was sorry she had to experience that? That she and her plushies deserved better than he gave them?
In the end, he could not say anything. It would not improve anything. So he nodded. A small jerk in his head conveying sorrow, gratitude, and regret. But that didn't do her justice. He gulped, and opened his mouth, not having the first idea what to say in a situation like this.
Fortunately or unfortunately, Akira's arrival saved him from dealing with this situation. For all his supposed superiority, his Navy-robed classmate had a temper larger than this entire school. And he spat venom at Aryaan.
It was so easy for him to turn his own frustrations and doubts like righteous anger upon the other boy. Had he been calmer, Aryaan might have said that he had done his job with Sara in keeping their opposition distracted. That his job was to support the Queen, not fight on the frontline. That the only other Champions who fought did so out of desperation. But he barely held together through guilt and grief and horror. At such times anger was just as much a balm as anything else and Aryaan reached for it eagerly.
"Big talk, coming from you of all people." He sneered at his aggressor, all guilt forgotten. Aryaan would have taken this from @Narumi, or @Ginyami-senpai, or @Sara-senpai, or @Chi-san, or even @Big Blue. But Akira? "Remind me again, Shimizu-kun, what remarkable contribution you made on the chessboard, as Sara-senpai and I danced on the edge of danger, trying to lure attention away from the rest of you?"
He did not wait for the Navy-robe to reply, but spoke over any attempt at an answer. "Nothing, that's what. You had ONE JOB. To protect and heal, and look at where that got us." An angry gesture towards the hospital beds. "Hell, you could not even move out of the way of ONE attack coming your way."
The tiniest pause, as his tone took on a mocking quality. "What did you expect your old friend would ride out into the sunset to protect you? You're supposed to be an ace duelist representing our school. But when it came time to perform. Well. We can all see the results."
Here, he took a step closer to the other boy. "You, of all people here, don't get to comment about anything. Not you. Not about this"
The curtains fell. And the silence was deafening

He had only nodded, slight and short, full of guilt. At least, that's what Chiaki could discern.
As the door opened again, Chiaki turned her head to glance at Kohana-san, the latest arrival, who was looking between the two of them. She took a step back from Shamsi, to turn her attention to the older student.
"No, no, you're fine. As for the food, well, I'm not too sure. I'm sure they wouldn't mind too much if you took a little though."
As she spoke, another student, Hiro-san, entered, sweeping her up in a big hug. With a gracious smile, she reciprocated the embrace.
"It's good to see you too, Hiro."
The door creaked open once more, and Shimizu-san entered. Chiaki watched him carefully, seemingly composed, as he slowly made his way to where the rest of the team had gathered. However, his words would prove otherwise, as he cut into Shamsi.
"Shimizu-san-" Chiaki would try to add, only to be cut off.
As Shamsi-san would retaliate with his own harshness, Chiaki couldn't prevent the slight tremble, beginning at the edge of her fingertips, then soon following through to the rest of her hand. In her ears, her heart started to pound, just as it had the day before in front of all those people watching as she'd helped to fell the American team. Her head had involuntarily bowed, to prevent others from seeing this, as she took a shaky step back from the noise.
"Please," she would say, but her voice sounding no louder than a whisper. "No more. No more fighting. Yesterday was enough."
She wasn't even sure if she could be heard over whatever argument was beginning. Her voice began to choke up as her eyes watered, but she pushed them back. Not here. Not right now. Not in front of her peers. Not in front of those who had already seen their friends and comrades fallen just the day before. They did not need this right now. They did not deserve more weakness.
"We saw what happened yesterday with fighting," she endeavoured to continue, though the success of which could be argued. "People got hurt. And that was nobody's fault, they knew, we all knew this wasn't going to be easy when we signed up. And we wouldn't have done if we weren't prepared for the consequences. But what happens when we fight amongst ourselves? Who knows who could get hurt then?"
Surprised at herself, Chiaki quickly quietened. Gaze dropped and anything else she could want to say caught in her throat, she backed up even further from it all. She wasn't sure if she dared to leave, not yet, as this was supposed to be a team gathering. But all of this continued disagreement, within people who were a team, who were meant to work together, it didn't bode well, and she knew it.
She felt herself reach a wall, where she slowly slid down to the floor, curled up, picking at the edge of her robes. She wanted no more to do with this, not right now. If they continued to fight, so be it.

But he'd already expected her to do so. She was a really nice girl and Tone liked being around her often. Releasing her after a few seconds, when Sara entered the room, Tone flew over to him as well. Sara accepted his hug and even patted him on the back too. The slightly older boy's request made him grin at him. "Mm! Of course! I just got overly excited upon seeing you relatively healthy again!" Tone told him, remembering from Sara's words that they did happen to be in the hospital wing right now. As Sara glanced around, Tone did too. But it seemed as if there was no one around who might chastise him for this 'offense'. Not yet at least. That was when the door opened again and another familiar face entered the room. It was his Akira! Tone quickly zoomed over to him but Akira seemed to be carrying something in his hands. They looked like dorayaki boxes and judging from where Akira was going, it seemed as if he'd brought them as gifts. Tone waited for him to place them down and then made his move. He came up behind Akira and tried to wrap him up into a back-hug, one of the ways Tone showed his affection towards others. Especially Akira. It had been too long a time! "Aki!!" He said, his voice somewhat muffled as he buried his head into the back of Akira's back. Soon after, should the back-hug have happened, Akira made his way over to where Chiaki and Aryaan currently were. Tone would follow him. What followed next was a series of barbs, insults and arguments between the two. A sigh escaped the duo-toned boy's lips. These two were at it again. Back in the past, Tone had always been one of the few who tried to bring peace between them. Some might have called him a mood-maker. But there was only so much Tone could do. These 2 seemed to have always had it out for eachother.... Tone slipped away from the two, while Chiaki tried to get them to stop fighting, and picked up two kebabs from one of the plates. Returning to the scene, he quickly got between the two and attempted to thrust a kebab into the mouth of both Akira and Aryaan at the same time. "Alright you guys! Let's just cool down and eat together! Delicious food, what could go wrong with that?" Tone said with what seemed to be a happy smile on his face. Hopefully, this would calm them down and get them to relax a little. |

Interlude -- Out of the Chessboard

Hadashi was having a delightful time. He, Shimizu-kun, Narumi-kun, and several others were all having a lovely hike through a Japanese forest.
Even Shamsi-kun was there! Narumi and Shamsi kept running ahead, and he had to keep calling them back to the group.
But everyone was friends, the group was having a wonderful time. No one having to worry about exams or grades or robe color. No worries about protocols or rules. Just a fun time.
Then an unfamiliar smell filled the air. One that elicited an overwhelming curiosity, and an intense desire to eat.
It was then that Hadashi's eyes fluttered open, and he found himself in an unfamiliar place.
"What... Where am I?"
He looked around and saw his schoolmates, and everything came flooding back. The Hexwizard Tournament. They, mostly the knights and Queen Hadashi himself, had demolished the Americans of Ilvermorny. He remembered hiw their defenses crumbled before the might of Mahoutokoro, and how effortlessly he had swatted them aside.
Then he remembered that at the end, they had desperately tried to spite him, and actually managed to bring him down just as their king went down. Too little, too late, eh? From this, he deduced he was in the Hospital Wing.
Then on top of that, he remembered how Narumi-kun had taken massive hits defending him. Immediately, he scanned the room for Narumi, and found him, unsurprisingly, asleep.
Hadashi was not yet privy to thr argument unfolding. So he said-
"Is everyone alright? And what is that smell?"
