Natural Enemy... or Friend?
Sonya smiled at the question. "Yes!" She smiled, getting exited, "I love musical theater, mostly singing although I can dance." She was very exited and, although she thought that the uptight girl would probably be puzzled by this, kept her energetic demeanor. "My mother used to be a performer and my aunt loved it as well. Once, when I was younger, my aunt took me to a performance of West Side Story. I loved it so much and I decided to try and preform and have continued doing so ever since. My aunt lives in New York City and takes me to see shows whenever I visit," she rambled passionately. She may seem very over exited about this subject, but it was something that meant a lot to her.
She realized she was rambling a bit and decided to turn the conversation back to Anastasia. She didn't like too much attention or want to seem like she was self obsessed and only talked about herself. She also wanted to get to know her better, as she surprisingly actually seemed like a decent person, so she thought of another question to ask. "So... What's your family like?" she asked, the question being the first thing to pop into her head.

Anastasia didn't understand half of the things that Soyna said, but decided not to question it. She knew what New York was, but she hadn't the faintest what "West Side Story" or most of the other things she was talking about were. "That sounds most lovely. I've taken ballet and singing lessons since I was very young, as well as learning how to play a few instruments, but I've never been much of a performer," Anastasia told the other girl. A few was putting it mildly. She played at least half a dozen including piano and violin, which were her personal favorites. She was technically excellent at them, but she just didn't love music the way this girl seemed to. She preferred singing, but she wasn't passionate about that either. Her real love was Quidditch, despite her father's efforts to squash it out of her.
"My family is rather strict, but if you behave yourself, you generally don't have problems," Anastasia began slowly, careful not to speak badly of her family to this near stranger, no matter how nice she might seem. She didn't mention the fact that her cousin had been disowned for disagreeing with her mother and father, or that her own parents had threatened to do the same when they'd heard about her sorting. She didn't tell Sonya about how her parents ranted about Muggleborns, and how they used the word that Anastasia had quickly discovered was absolutely unacceptable at school. Instead, she kept of her facade of perfection.

Sonya just nodded to Anastasia's description of her family. She sensed that there was some tension in the statement. She knew that lots of pureblood families were rough, often to hard on their children and desperate to hang onto their status. "I see," she bit her lip and looked down. She wondered if Anastasia actually liked her family. If all she could say about them was that they were strict, that was probably very unlikely.
To break any tension, Sonya decided to talk some about her own family. "My family is quite interesting. My father is a wizard and my mother was a muggle, but she died right after giving birth to me. I still keep in touch with her side of the family though. My father is an author and we travel a lot, which is really fun," she said. She grazed over her mothers death, somewhat awkwardly. Of corse she wished it hadn't happened and she could've met her mother, but it had happened long ago and didn't want anyone to feel sorry for her about it. She never got to meet her so she never got the chance to actually miss her. She wanted to meet her, naturally, but it wasn't like she ever actually knew her. The only things she knew were from her father's stories and a few pictures and that was good enough for her.

Anastasia flushed a bit at the girl's reaction to her words. Normally, people didn't ask her questions like that because either her family was there with her, or they already knew the family. Things were quite different at school though. Most of the people hadn't even heard of the Becketts since they were half-bloods or muggle-borns who wouldn't have really had reason to have heard of the family. She felt rather bad for having misrepresented her family to this girl. True, she thought she had been rather generous in her description of her family, but clearly, that wasn't quite enough.
Anastasia listened intently as the other girl described her family. She couldn't imagine losing her mother. They didn't exactly have the warmest relationship, but her mother had been a fixture throughout Anastasia's entire life. The thought of her mother dying, really, either of her parents dying, was like the thought of the Minister of Magic dying. It was a possibility, but everyone knew that it would probably never happen.
She noticed the girl didn't say much about her mother's death, and she didn't blame her. Anastasia was a stranger as of ten minutes ago, and nobody wanted to start off a friendship or anything else for that matter. "Oh, that's most fascinating. My parents are rather protective, so we haven't traveled much. What's your favorite place that you've traveled to?" Anastasia asking, grinning. Protective was one word for it. Another word was muggle hating and not wanting to risk contamination. Again, not something you'd want to tell a near stranger.

Sonya thought about all the places she'd traveled. They were all very nice places and all dear to her. She'd never been asked to choose a favorite. "Well, I of course love New York but I go there lots. So, I guess it's more like a second home to me now," she laughed. That was true, New York was familiar to her so she didn't really count it and one of her grand travel expeditions. She goes a few times a year to see her mother's side of the family. It wasn't like she'd been there once and would love to go back. There were plenty of other places that fit that description.
"I rather enjoyed New Zealand. It was small and peaceful, which made it a good vacation spot, and the people there were quite friendly as well. I also liked Germany, it was interesting. There was a bit of a language barrier, my father tried to get me to learn German but the words are just so hard to pronounce, but overall it was good," she laughed recalling the experiences. Sonya had a few other stories but decided not to ramble on. "Since you don't travel, how do you like where you live? I'm assuming somewhere in England, right?"

"London's alright," Anastasia said after the girl finished speaking. Frankly, she wouldn't have minded if Sonya had kept talking about her travels for another hour! First off, Anastasia liked gathering information about others, but secondly and more importantly, Anastasia longed to travel and hearing about Sonya's travels was almost as good as doing it herself. She'd read about a million books about different countries and places that she wanted to visit, but it was clear that it wasn't at all the same as talking to someone who had actually been there. "It has a surprisingly high population of wizards, all things considered."
She glanced back at the Quidditch Pitch and was again filled with dreams about the amazing game. She really did love Quidditch more than nearly anything else on the planet, and honestly couldn't fathom why her mother stopped playing. She'd been one of the most promising young professional players, and then she'd just quit when she got married. Even now, her mother didn't play, even for fun, which Anastasia found downright baffling. If you loved a sport enough to try to play it professionally, then why would you suddenly stop playing altogether?
She shook herself out of her thoughts and back to the present. She didn't think that zoning out and ignoring someone was the best basis for a friendship.

Sonya listened as Anastasia said she lived in London. "I've been there a few times. There's some pretty nice stuff there. It reminds me of New York a bit," she laughed. When she had gone to London she had a good time, but she had to admit it did have it's not so nice areas. There were lots of tourists, which made it crowded. She bet Anastasia's family hated that, as most tourists were muggles. Last time she went to London she had stayed in a nicer area, so she had mostly good memories. Almost like New York, which was kinda dirty and had it's bad areas but if you looked for the hidden, or not so hidden, gems you could appreciate the lovely city.
She paused for a second before deciding to ask another question. "Speaking of homes, how do you like your house?" she asked, "They're supposed to be our second homes so hopefully you're getting along nicely. You must be brave to be in Gryffindor," she said, hoping for the best. She asked that as she remembered her friend Rorie describing her encounter with Anastasia, which sounded unpleasant, but at the moment Sonya found the girl quite lovely. A bit quiet and closed off, but nice enough. She wondered if the mention of the house would bring up some bad things, as she recalled Anastasia not particularly liking the common room.

Anastasia smiled a bit. Brave wasn't exactly a word she would have used to describe herself a few months ago, but she was trying to be now. It was strange to her since bravery wasn't particularly valued back home, but she was getting used to it.
"Gryffindor's great," she began. She wanted to laugh, since, just a few weeks ago, she'd been furious at her sorting. Also, looking back, maybe cursing at the sorting hat wasn't the best idea she'd ever had. In the past few weeks, as she'd settled into Gryffindor, she'd found herself doing things like chasing down homework while yelling at a bird, or getting detention for hexing her cousin. All of those things would make her mother faint, but somehow, now, they felt normal and right. Either that or she was going crazy. Maybe it was both. Who knew?
"I mean, obviously, having the preteens with the least impulse control all put together may not have been the brightest idea, but it really is great," she continued. "I'd like to think so, but brave might not be the best word to describe me with. Occasionally impulsive and reckless, probably. What about you? You must be hard working to be in Hufflepuff, right?"

"I guess I am," Sonya responded. She was pretty hardworking, but she felt like saying so directly would be bragging. She worked hard for whatever she wanted and didn't give up easily. "I'm also really loyal and kind," she smiled. It was true, those were the Hufflepuff qualities she felt she aligned with the most. She was extremely loyal to those that were good to her and tried her best to be kind to everyone. She loved her house, and ultimately was a Hufflepuff through and through.
Sonya was a bit surprised at how Anastasia had just described herself. She took another look at her proper outfit and never would associate reckless and impulsive with the girl that stood in front of her. She would have better thought of brave first. But who knows? Maybe she would show her recklessness at some point. "It's funny," Sonya began with a smile, "Taking one look at you I would never guess you were impulsive or reckless. You seem so proper and put together."
Anastasia was of high class, yet another reason she was surprised of the description. Her family must be strict, as most rich pureblood families are. To be impulsive and reckless must mean she's a bit of a rebel and Sonya found that quite entering. She had always liked people that tried to break out of their bubble.

"Sounds like Hufflepuff is the perfect place for you then," Anastasia told the girl. That was the first time she'd ever said that and really meant it. Back home, Hufflepuff was something of a joke - what self-respecting house valued loyalty above knowledge or resourcefulness. Since she'd met more Hufflepuff, she was beginning to see that, despite the fact that Hufflepuff definitely wasn't a fit for her, didn't mean that it was useless.
Anastasia laughed a bit when Sonya said that she wouldn't have associated reckless with Anastasia. Few would upon first glance, and while Anastasia wasn't constantly breaking rules or anything like that, when she did, they were colossally stupid and reckless. Cursing at the Sorting Hat sprang to mind. Who in their right mind would curse at the being who would decide where they would be spending the next seven years? Anastasia, apparently. "You'd be surprised how many times I've heard that one," Anastasia said good-naturedly. "I'm hardly a poltergeist, but I'm not exactly the prim and proper girl my mother would like me to be either." That wasn't saying all that much, since, even if she was as obedient as her mother would have liked, she still wouldn't have been proper enough for her. Her mother standards were, frankly, ridiculous and utterly unrealistic. Obviously, Anastasia would never say that to her mother or anyone else, but she thought it quite often.
