Martha slowly climbed the stone steps that led to the Astronomy Tower. She was trying to be discreet so as not to be caught in the middle of the night. The young Slytherin wiped away a rebellious tear that escaped from her right eye, and stifled a sob. No, don't cry now! she thought, shaking her head and twirling her blond hair.
It was the first time she had bent a rule. It was the first time she had disobeyed her parents. Except she was a real Slytherin now. She had to show herself as such. A question surely crossed your mind while reading this text: why was Martha crying? Well, his parents had sent him a letter recently, as they had been informed about his arrival in Slytherin.
You should know that his parents hated Slytherin more than anything, like their sworn enemy. They wanted their daughter to go to Ravenclaw or Gryffindor. Martha had lied to them about being admitted to Ravenclaw, but the lie hadn't lasted long. Her parents had learned that she was a Slytherin, and had shown their hatred in the letter the blonde had received.
Now you must understand why the young Slytherin went to the Astronomy tower at such an hour, when she was forbidden to do so, like all the other students. She wanted to occupy her mind, do something amusing to think of something other than the tear that had been made between her and her parents.
Martha wiped away another tear, and found herself at the top of the Astronomy tower, before remembering the real reason she was there: she had met a Slytherin named Ava, and the two had given each other meet here.

Ava was the only one up in the astronomy tower for awhile. While she and the girl had agreed to after dark, Ava liked to be prepared. Know what she was getting into. As she knew from an earlier experience pranking a few targets with a club, you could never know what you were getting into. Never, unless you took a look at it first.

The tower was quiet with no one occupying it, and she prayed another class wouldn’t be needing it anytime soon. If they would…well, let’s just say the two new friends would be in trouble.

Ava usually wouldn’t agree to mischief anymore, she was a changed woman. But it was a sacrifice for the greater good, becoming this girls new friend. She often felt friendless in this world, but after an interaction with Clair a day prior, she tried to continue to see the good in the world. Surely a detention would be worth a new friend, hopefully one that would stick by her side through tough and hard.

She could hear the other girl coming before she saw. The tell-tale sound of footsteps coming up the staircase, accompanied by a sniffle. Ava furrowed her brows, and grabbed the door to hold open for the fellow slytherin.

Seeing the red-eyes of the fellow slytherin, she opened her mouth to speak. She had learned from Clair, you could always help someone out just by listening and caring. “What’s wrong?” she asked quietly, slinging an arm over the other girl’s shoulders.

Martha spotted the girl she had arranged to meet with, and gave her a shy smile. She put an arm around her shoulders and asked her what was wrong. At first, the blonde shrugged sadly. She didn't want to appear weak to the other students. Come on, she was a Slytherin after all! She had to be strong. But, nevertheless, she had the right to confide. Especially with Ava, who seemed to be nice.

"I...I'm thinking of my parents," she said, sniffling. "I...I'm sure they abandoned me." Yes, that was his most valid assumption. Because she had been admitted to Slytherin, her parents were pissing her off. A few weeks before he arrived at Hogwarts, his parents had told him that they hated Slytherin, and refused to allow their own daughter to be admitted there. Martha just shrugged her shoulders and mumbled a little "sure." She wanted to make her parents understand that she was old enough to choose her future on her own, but hadn't said anything. She didn't want her parents to get upset.

"My mother was admitted to Ravenclaw, and my father to Gryffindor," she said, looking down at her shoes. "They hate Slytherin more than anything." She began to observe the sky. He was resplendent. Hundreds of stars twinkled and represented several funny characters. Martha remembered that, when she was younger, she and her mother loved to watch the sky before going to sleep.

Martha just shrugged off her question, but Ava knew enough to wait. She held her breath, letting the other girl's mind work through whatever she was going through. It wasn't Ava's place to push, and waiting could bring an answer.

And the answer came with sniffles. Ava leaned more on the girl, although she barely knew her. The leaning was to show that she was there, still listening. When she leaned away, she hoped the girl would follow and lean on her. You had to give to get, nothing came for free. But some prices were more easily paid than others. This one was easy, an ear for an answer.

Ava let the girl finish her thoughts before speaking, choosing her words carefully. "I understand family problems," she said quietly, thinking about her own. "I never knew my mother, she died giving birth to me." She heaved a breath, with more difficulty than there should have been for someone she didn't know. Her voice shook as she continued. "My dad got remarried, and my entire family is muggles. I don't think they like magic." Ava dipped her head, and her words were more unsure than she felt. She didn't think they didn't like magic, she knew they didn't like magic. "Your parents will be there for you know matter what, even if you're a slytherin." What Ava wanted to say was 'at least your family likes magic' but she knew comparing one problem to another would only create more problems. "And you're lucky you are, slytherin is the best house." Her tone took on a more joking manner, and she leaned back so she had the full view of the stars.

Though persuaded not to shed any more tears, Martha saw a veil covering her eyes, and she blinked rapidly. Admittedly, she had never been in a very good relationship with her parents, but they had never made her head, and that disturbed her. She was hoping for at least one owl from them to ask her how she was enjoying the Hogwarts vibe. But, his parents were more stubborn than ever, and the simple stupid betrayal could terribly upset them.

After all, she had nothing to blame herself for, did she? It was the sorting hat that had decided to take her to Slytherin, not her. Well, okay, she hadn't stopped thinking about her future at the snake's lair during her admission. But, that hadn't influenced the choice of the sorting hat, had it? She covered her face with her long blonde curls to hide her tears, even though the darkness was already doing the job. She hadn't even had an owl from her brother, although they had always been inseparable.

Martha turned to Ava when the latter said she knew about the family issues. Curious to know the rest of the story, the young blonde listened. She heard her friend's words as she stared at her shoes. Ava had lost her mother, and her father had remarried. Now his family was overrun with Muggles who didn't like magic. The young blonde felt sorry for her. It must have been complicated being a witch among muggles. Then she smiled without joy. "My parents have always been very strict with me," she said with a sigh. "They never supported me when I was doing badly, or when my grades dropped. On the contrary, I took their anger in the face".

Martha crossed her arms, her eyes staring up at the beautiful, mysterious stars twinkling in the cloudless sky. All the times she had been belittled by her parents still demoralized her. Yet she loved them. But they didn't care about her. Maybe they were even relieved that she left home to go to Hogwarts. They would never have to see her again. "Yes, Slytherin really is the best house!" she exclaimed, smiling.
