The View She So Missed

From high above, perched at the top of the owlery, sat a small girl clad in her house colors. Her feet swung as they dangled, her body perched dangerously on the ledge that was provided inside (assumably that of which provided an opening for owls to fly to and from). She had spent a day here in her first year, mourning the contact of her family and resenting her mother and father. Now, it was that time again. In the cold October air, she shivered, having forgotten her jacket.
She quietly hummed along to a tune, one of which she had possibly pulled from one of the busy American streets, those musicians with their cases open just trying to make ends meet, and she would hear such songs that taught her lessons, sticking with her until the end of times. The songs that taught her of hardship, which reminded her that those she traveled with were fortunate with their connections. It reminded her that it could be worse. And when an icy breeze hit her arms, causing her to shiver harshly, it reminded her that she was still alive.
Small hands clutched a piece of parchment, folded neatly down, held together by a small string, stamped down with a green wax and her house's emblem. She wanted to send a letter to Austin.
Austin was a friend from home. Tall and lanky he stood, his hair an array of colors; a soft wooden brown with honey drizzled over it. He looked like the fall and presented as such. His eyes were dead leaves falling from the largest of trees that they would climb, and his height making up the overgrown grass in the field that they roamed. A wizard, and a bloody good one at that, Austin was resigned to keeping his family safe; his family being from the same storybook as the Helms, which is how they met to begin with.
The letter read how he would surely be envious of her stay at Hogwarts if he could only see it in person. How he had never met people like this. It was much different from home! She chuckled dryly as she looked at it again, soft tears rubbing at the delicate ink, threatening to wash away the words that she wished to convey her pain in. Oh, how she had missed her best friend.
But she was braver than she was last year, and had grown from her naive state. She would send this letter, and an owl would find him, wherever he resided. He would read the letter with joy, and one would reach her soon enough. But until then, she was left to this lonely and empty pain, the one where she remembered that she could not see him in person. Not yet.

Over the year, Cara grew closer to her dorm mate, alexx, and she was now proud to call her friend, something she didn’t have much of back at home. They were so much alike, they were almost twins. So, when Alexx went missing, Cara was immediately worried for Her.
Facing her fears, which she had gotten better at, but not completely over yet, and asked around the school, trying to see if anyone had seen the blonde. Most of the other students didn’t respond, didn’t recognize her, or didn’t know, but Cara pushed through and eventually got a hint from An unknown student about not the whereabouts of her friend.
So, cara followed the directions of the hint, and a few from teachers, and made her way to where alexx supposedly was. She slowly pushed open the door, and sighed in relief when she saw the familiar light hair of her friend.
She smiled and walked over to her, sitting next to her. “Why are you up here?” She chuckled, looking out at the view. “I got so worried I actually talked to people.”
Cara looked over at alexx, and immediately her smile turned into a frown. “Hey, why are you crying?”

"Ah-" Alexx began, sniffling. "I'm just... Reminiscing, I suppose." She said truthfully. Given that she had the opportunity to be alone for the first time in a while, though she was grateful for Cara's appearance, she had been presented with the perfect opportunity to really reflect on her life. It was not often that she would have liked to remember those days, but it was always healthy to reflect on such in any case.
Looking over at her ginger friend, she wiped some tears from her pale cheeks, smiling weakly. "Je suis désolée, I did not mean to worry anyone." Her French accent was prominent, even in her low and quiet voice. In truth, she was willing to tell Cara what was the matter if she so wished to know.
But before that thought occurred, she had been more unsure as to how Cara had found her to begin with. The blonde lass was not a frequent visitor of the owlery, as she didn't have many outgoing or incoming letters in the first place. But these special birds, those of which were loving and calm, kept her company as she mourned the companionship that she had previously never spent a day without.
It was, in truth, hard to live without her closest friend. He was probably the most brilliant person she knew. Desperate to tell him over her friends, her teachers and classes, of the food and of the houses, always on the edge of her seat with excitement, a certain fire in her eyes igniting the passion and wonder that filled her whenever she spoke of school. Seldom had she previously missed such opportunities to confide in Austin the wonders that she had only so dreamed when she was younger, the stories in which Mikey would tell her of his own days at Hogwarts, and the ones in which Tex would joke about given he was in a good mood. But now, living every single day without telling him of these wonders, she felt lost and unsure of herself.
It was not as though she hadn't met people to replace the loneliness with, because she had indeed met people. Friends came and went as they would, and she would forever be on her way down the changing staircases, winding into new paths every chance they got, leading her to new people and on new journeys. Those very staircases were like a metaphor for her experience, one that she would surely note in her next letter.
Though it was sad that she had left her old life behind, she did not mean to come off as ungrateful for this particular chance. Her name had been down since she was born, that was certain. Even under the radar, the day she got her letter, she knew that there was not a soul working for this school who had a doubt in their mind of her place there. She was smart and witty, much like her eldest brother Mikey, but strong and fierce, which she had acquired from her second eldest brother, Tex. It was the same passion that coursed through her veins that her siblings so possessed; that fiery spark that was bursting at the seems of their skin, begging to be set free.
And thus she had sat, her legs still swinging in the cold breeze, and another shiver danced down her spine. However, this one was not from the cold. This one was from all the thoughts and emotions that had burned in her, the ones that caused her to feel everything at once and then nothing all together. She did not know if she was weak or strong because of these, and she wished she had someone to ask. The blue gems that were her eyes had cast down, those that were once the color of a peaceful sky had turned into a dull and faded grey, now glassed over from the tears that only threatened to spill again.

The owlery was a very aesthetic and calming place for a young girl like Talia to find her thoughts.
Which, of course, was definitely a plus when she had a lot to think about, that being the case today.
As she absentmindedly entered the wonderful tower, the stonework beautiful except for the parts where there were, you know, bird droppings. Petting a small owl softly, admiring its fluffy feathers and cute personality, she looked out one of the windows into the bright sky, cloudless on that sunny day, the only thing disturbing the sea of blue the few birds flying overhead. An aesthetic sight, Talia thought, laughing at herself and how much she was a sucker for aesthetics. She quickly attached the letter to her parents, or, well, parent, and sent the adorable owl she had been stroking off with an affectionate but gentle squeeze and a few bites of food.
Climbing the stone steps up to the top of the owlery, Talia noticed the voices too late. She couldn't turn back the way she came without looking pathetic and awkward, though she still was both of those. Instead, the girl gave a shy wave and a sweet smile, hoping she wasn't making anything too weird.
"Uh, hi. I'm Tal. Talia Piper," she stated quietly. "I'm sorry if I'm barging in, I can leave if you'd like."
with love, talia
