Carriage

7.00pm
The 5 hour Hogwarts Express ride was tiresome. One of the new professors had instructed non-first years to head towards the carriages. Aurelia didn’t know where they were and had just followed the crowd. While the new first years were used towards the lake to take their boat ride.
The girl didn’t enjoy her ride on the Hogwarts express. She had entered a compartment with mostly first years who kept asking questions. It was like her experience on last year, where she was accompanied with two hufflepuffs. Well, she didn’t know they were hufflepuffs then, but they were nice.
It was about a two minutes walk to the location where the carriages were supposed to be. Aurelia craned her head curiously, to see what was they looked like, she couldn’t see a thing, the queue was too long.
“Name?” a professor holding a clipboard in hand asked.
“Aurelia Bezuidenhout, Second Year. ” she told him. The Professor proceeded to tick her name off and the same was asked for the student behind her.
She wasn’t familiar with the Professor, she had heard there were new ones coming in that year. The Masked Man might have frightened of the old ones away. Speaking of the masked man, there were rumors that she had picked up that the masked man had been unmasked, she would have to find out if that was true. She still was a journalist for the Gryffgazette. It might have gotten rusty in the months of summer.
As the queue got shorter, she got nearer to where the carriages were. There was somesort of creature pulling each one of them, Aurelia couldnt see quite what it was, it was dark, she assumed it was a horse. Each time one past, the queue got four persons shorter, it wasn’t long before she was right at the front.
Aurelia gulped as the carriage was pulled towards her. It wasn’t pulled by a horse but rather, somesort of tall, dark, winged creature with a beak.
“Get on, don’t keep the others waiting behind.” a professor snapped at her.
Aurelia reluctantly climbed on to the carriage, the creature looked menacing and dangerous. Couldn’t they just use normal horses? She was the first on the carriage.

Carriage
The train ride there had been quite pleasant, overall.. what with Scott leaving the car with both his luggage still neatly packed and a new friend. Although just as Scott had done himself, the year before, his compartment company was to travel the rest of the way by boat- leaving Scott alone to navigate for himself in the dark and confusion. Luckily, of course, there was a mob of older students to blindly follow.
The, though already quite tall, twelve year old stretched his neck out to get a better look over some of their heads- only to see the line of first-years tripping away toward the boathouse. They were in for a wonderful time, he remembered that much.. though he, on the other hand, could do nothing but assume he'd be travelling by another one of those carriages parked some metres ahead- similar to that of the one wheeling away at the moment. It was very dark, but Scott could make out the heads of four older students disappearing into the wood..
A carriage is not nearly as cool as a boat.
At least.. Scott took to stand on his toes and left his luggage on the ground as he tried to get a better look.. at least they wouldn't be if they were pulled by something!
"Scott Alexander.." He said distractedly, and reached for his bag as he was ushered forth.
"But professor, aren't there any.." But Scott didn't need an answer, because setting off with another four students was another carriage- pulled by nothing. The boy let out a delighted noise, as clapping wasn't an option, and took to jump up on to the next one, heaving his bag before him.
There was only one student sat there yet, a girl Scott would very likely be able to recognise should he make an effort, but he was too excited to.
"Isn't this amazing? I doubted, you know, that this would be as memorable as the boats. I was wrong! I often am. Not doubting Hogwarts again, though! Scott Alexander."

The girl sat upright, her bag straight and legs together, her hands were on her lap, the way she always sat. A proper way a lady should sit according to her conservative Mother. Her fingers tapped nervously against her knee as if she was typing on a keyboard. Her lips pressed together, she was clearly uneasy about the foreign creature she had never seen before.
For a few minutes, she had never peeled her eyes way from the dark animal not until another student joined her. Aurelia smiled at the Gryffindor politely. He clearly wasn’t fazed by the creature and most likely knew what it was.
She then continued inspecting the animal. It’s skin clung tightly onto intakes and it was as if it had not an ounce of flesh and was made entirely out of bones and a thin layer of skin. The way it looks, it had been starved of perhaps it was so weak and useless that its soul purpose was to pull carriages. Poor creature.
She blinked, snapping out of her deep thought. The boy had spoke a bit to fast. He was clearly excited for a new year in hogwarts. Thankfully, Aurelia managed to register the remaining words. Especially when he introduced himself,
Scott. No wonder he looked familiar, she had most likely interviewed him a few times during her first year for the GryffGazette, she had interviewed many, she can’t possibly remember all her interviewees’ names.
“Y...yeah. Definitely better than the boat ride.” She told him, stuttering a little, her voice with an unintended hint of sarcasm. To be honest, the boat ride sounded better than a carriage pulled by a scary looking creature from a horror movie that could take flight at any moment.
“What is that?” She asked leaning slightly closer to the boy.

The train ride to hogwarts was pure hell. The 5 hours it took felt like it took 5 years instead. Clearly Marissa was not in the best of moods, her eyes were red and puffy from crying. This year going to be especially hard for her. Mari reluctantly came back to Hogwarts for her Second Year, from after what happened during the summer holidays. She wipped away some tear that stained her cheeks, trying her best to make it seem as if she had not been crying.
A professor told Marissa to go to the carriages, so she followed the other students. What was new this year was that she no longer took the boat. Carriages with older years.. possibly. The day just kept getting better and better for Marissa. Another two minutes and they finally were there. A Professor asked her name, in which Mari blankly stared at them for a moment before showing a card with her name on it. Today was not doing to be a talking day for her.
Going off to the carriage that she was assigned to, Marissa realised these dark creatures that were in front of it. Thestrals. They were interesting creatures, Marissa had read about them once. Only people who had seen death could see these creatures. A single tear went down Marissa’s cheek before she wiped it away. Walking ahead for a slight moment, Mari climbed up into the carriage and sat down on an empty seat. There were two other students so far, so she sat in a seat that could be the most possible seat furthest away from them.

She was asking Scott, and not understanding quite what she had meant by it, he peered his eyes at her with a confused grin. "A spell.. I suppose? Probably something very difficult and all that. How does the carriage now where to go, I mean? I wouldn't want it to suddenly start roaming through the forbidden forest. Though I think they've got all that under control, if you're worried.""What is that?"
Scott looked over the Gryffindor girl's shoulder and around the whole thing. "Impressive. What did you say your name was?"
Another girl got on to sit with them next, but this one had blonde hair and wore Hufflepuff robes. Scott didn't recognise her properly, either, and nor did he notice her cautious look.
"Welcome aboard," He said. "This peculiar vehicle. We're unsure of how it operates, but you should feel as safe as we do! I'm Scott Alexander."
He smiled at her as she took a seat, and tapped rhythmically on the bag in front of him as he looked from one of them to the other. They shared a look of unease about them, and Scott wondered what that could be about. Sure, he'd met people uncertain before their arrival- but that would almost always be first years. What did older students have to be uncertain of at all?

Carriage
Oh, she was tired... so, so tired. Her legs could barely drag her over to the horseless carriages, and she hopefully could have the chance to be saddled with boring carriage partners so that she could fall asleep on the way to the school. Of course, with her luck, there would be no such chance to sleep. As the professor directed her to her assigned carriage, she would climb in and sit beside Scott, resting her head against his shoulder wordlessly.
She recognized Aurelia, of course, and smiled emotionlessly at her. The other girl, a Hufflepuff, she didn't recognize, but her face seemed somewhat familiar. She looked as if she were actually about to fall asleep, her eyelids fluttering open and the closing, so much so that she nearly forgot that the carriage was horseless. This would be, of course, her first encounter with the thestrals that pulled the carriage- not that she could see them.
Her mother had warned her of them, saying that she might've been able to see them, but she couldn't. She had, of course, been the cause of death before, but never had she actually seen death before her eyes. The after effects, yes- the corpses, the blood stains, the ghosts that haunted the streets of the city she grew up in, but never had she watched the life leak out of someone.
Thus, she would not see the thestrals. Not this year, at least.

[font=bodoni Monotype]The worry in Aurelia increased with Scott’s answer. Didn’t he see the dark winged creature? His confused look said it all, he also said it was a spell, but it clearly wasn’t, a horse- or whatever it was- was pulling it. Perhaps he was being sacarstic.
“I didn’t,” Aurelia replied, when Scott indirectly asked what her name was. The twelve year old wasn’t in the best of moods, unlike the excited Gryffindor, she guessed it was because another school term was starting. She wouldn’t be able to see her family till December, during the winter break, that was a long wait. At least there were still owls.
Another girl joined them on the carriage, she was Hufflepuff whom Aurelia might have passed along the halls of hogwarts, but she didn’t know her name. The girl didn’t seem fazed by the creature either. How was she the only one who was uncomfortable with such a creature pulling the carriage?
Aurelia returned Ami a smile as the red head stepped up the carriage. Aurelia raised an eyebrow slightly as the girl put her head on Scott’s shoulder. Was there something she had missed the year before? It seems like there was. Aurelia wondered how she could grow so comfortable with another of another gender, Aurelia could never touch a boy. It was ssomething she could posssible write on for the Gryffgazette. Everybody loved gossips.
The carriage began to move or more specifically, the creature. Aurelia shifted uneasily in her seat. The creature could take of in flight at any moment, bring them up with it. How could she be comfortable with that? She looked at Ami and the other Hufflepuff with her eyebrows furrowed worriedly.
“Both of you don’t see it either?” she asked, hoping for the answer she wanted, to tell her she wasn’t crazy.

Carriage

This was her first time back at hogwarts without Claryssa. Everything felt.. wrong. All Marissa wanted to do was crawl out of her skin, feeling as if she did not deserve to do this. She sat as far away as possible from the others, leaning slightly away from them. Being sociable was not on her list, not for a while. The others greeted her with smiles but Mari simply ignored them and stared at the Thestrals. They were interesting to say the least, Marissa could name several facts about them from the top of her head.
Finally, the carriage started to move as the dark creatures slowly began to walk. Marissa stayed staring blankly at them, void of emotion. All she could imagine was Claryssa sitting beside her, talking about the lessons and all the friends she was excited to see. But none of that happened, Mari could hear the others in the background but she did not really pay attention. One of the others asked the rest of the group if they could see the Thestral. Marissa fought the urge to point out the facts, but in the end she stay silent. Thestrals could only be seen by people who have seen death. Really depressing matter, you have to see something horrifying just to see something majestic and mysterious in return.

Scott payed no attention to the reluctant energy of the two girls, but smiled instead greatly down at the firey head suddenly leaning against his shoulder. He’d been meaning to find her once they reached the castle! ..But it didn’t seem she’d have been any more fun there, either, as Ami was apparently half asleep. Were the other two as tired? That would explain some of it, although Scott himself didn’t feel drowsy at all.
“Don’t I see what? Don’t try and scare me, it’s only September! Did you see something in the woods? People tell me all sorts of things about that forest, I don’t know what to believe.. They wouldn’t keep dragons, would they? My brother tends to say, but he’s not very honest.. Oh look! We’re getting a move on!” As the carriage begun to slowly roll over the gravel and grass, Scott shook his shoulder if only the slightest so not to disturb his friend- but only have her acknowledge the question.
He looked curiously to the second Hufflepuff, as well. She didn’t look too well.
“Why what’s with all of you? I bet whatever you saw between the trees won’t come close to the castle, anyway, there’s no need to worry!”
It was the Gryffindor who’d spoken again, and although the question wasn’t directed at him he spoke up as if it had been.“Both if you don’t see it either?”

She smiled back at Scott as her best friend smiled down at her, and sat up afterward, realizing what a couch potato she looked like. Yes, she was tired, but now she had Scott! Nothing could possibly go wrong when you were with Scott. Well, actually, a lot of things could go wrong, but that was entirely beside the point.
Oh, Scott- poor little Scott. Apparently, he didn't know what thestrals were and was laughing it off, like the existence of death-horses was no big deal. Although Aurelia could clearly see them, the other Hufflepuff made no move nor any indication that she was able to see the thestrals, nor did she make any move to indicate that she was even listening into the conversation.
"I don't see anything," Ami offered helpfully with a shrug of her shoulders. "Scott, you're not telling me that you don't actually know what's pulling these carriages, right?"
If she was entirely honest, she had never thought to ask her mother why she knew about the existence of thestrals. Had she seen someone die? Had one of her friends told her about it? A pang of guilt punched her in the stomach, and she cursed herself out mentally as she realized how dumb she had been.
Then again, she was also silently rejoicing. This was one of the rare occasions where she knew something about the wizarding world that Scott didn't know. Normally, she was the one to go to him regarding the wizarding community, but the tables were now turned. She no longer felt stupid, and she felt prepared for the first time in a long time.
Thestrals, she decided, might've been her new favorite animal.
