Alan grinned back, as he weaved out the way of the red light rushing into his direction. It was almost as if it was too easy for him to know exactly how and where to move. Like a bird weaving through branches and leaves to find a perfect perch. A grin was gracing his features as he returned into the awaiting posture. "I mean there are little things in life that don't require skill," he replied and added in a slightly complacent fashion, "So I figured it would be no necessary mention." Alan was having fun with this and he almost regretted not asking for a duelling partner more often, then again perhaps he wouldn't appreciate this practice as much as he would have then.
"I'm quite enjoying this," he said in a appreciative tone, before trying out a spell he hadn't really tested out in a duelling environment before. The Cracker Jinx, which perhaps he should have made more use of, but had no proper idea of its practical use. Well practice was exactly to find out about such things, wasn't it? The name of it did sound fun enough! Well the incantation was a mouthful however.
There was a little bit of things he wanted to try out now that he was thinking about it, but many of those were possibly too harsh on a first year. Alan was also quite aware that they had wanted to use spells that wouldn't put one into a humiliating position. Alan had every intention of upholding that part of the agreement, after all it was supposed to be a fun way to kill some time and perhaps make a new friend or so. Avery seemed fun enough for that, he felt thus far.

┏ ┓----- S imply inspiring, was Alan’s ability to almost predict the projectiles coming at him.
Their styles were diametrical; one was tense and restrictive; designed for quick leaning and banking on the idea that a smaller profile was harder to hit, and Alan’s was loose and light; perfect for quick decisions and reactions to better jump around the limited space on the piste. Whilst in theory, Avery didn’t like the idea of a duellist bounding around like some overexcited chimp, he now understood the effectiveness of it. Alan zipped around the piste before Avery had even finished casting, as though he knew what was coming and where it would be going; a masterclass.
“Surprisingly, I can tell.” He replied, with a small smirk that spoke of his own enjoyment though then Alan zipped a Cracker Jinx at him at an unforeseen time that didn’t match the rhythm of the ebb and flow of their dance. His leaning would do him no favours here as fire-cracker-like explosives went off like a new-year's festivity an inch from his face; and it was safe to say that that was pretty scary. Subsequently, Avery took some steps back in panic; letting out a small yelp and almost tripping.
What looked worse than a baboon traipsing around an enclosure? A pathetic yelp followed by a retreat.
“Cracking shot, Vanes.” He gave jovially, partly to pay heed to the upperclassman’s skill and partly to cover up his ineffectiveness. “Tell me, what is the scene in your head when duelling? Do you picture yourself in a serene field, a gruelling battle?”
He collected himself and shook his head, not taking it to heart as he tried to change his mindset to look for flaws in his own, or his opponent’s strategy. He would have to adapt if he was to be the best, and if that meant trial and error then so be it. He pulled up his wand and shot another Knockback Jinx at him, slightly offbeat to the rhythm they had previously established due to his flapping, but he had recovered quickly…

Alan learned a fair few things during his so far quite pleasant encounter with Avery. First of all, he seemed to be rather easy to hang out with and they already shared an interest. And secondly, the other boy, whilst still a kid, was very observant and seemingly smart. As a first year, he must also have guts to even wanna practice with a sixth year, or ambition which either way were pretty cool qualities to have and Alan admired that in someone as young as the other. And of course both of them seemed to be enjoying this encounter, which promised perhaps the start of a friendship along their path.
Alan could barely hold back a snicker, though it wasn't in any way, shape or form meant to be condescending but instead simply amused, when the other boy simply could not anticipate where his spell had headed, causing him to almost trip in an attempt to stumble out of the way. Only to get hit by the exploding wizarding crackers to his face anyway. Alan heard the experience could be quite disorienting. "When duelling?" he asked with a tilt of his head, before thinking for a moment, "It's kinda like a dance, isn't it? Or if it goes real crazy a game of tag," he gave a chuckle. "What about you? Your stature seems pretty calm and confident, so I'm curious to know," Alan returned the question, before giving some thought to his next spell to use.
Alan made a quick move and send a Sneezing Hex hurtling the other boy's way. There was some good conversation to be had here and Alan as promised would not just use spells that were too advance or would put the other kid on display. For that reason he assumed a spell like the Tickling charm or the Dancing Feet spell would not be taken kindly by Avery. However he would assume that a spell like the sneezing hex was fair game, though if judged by the name it actually appeared to be darker in nature as it was a hex.
"Are there any spells you despise?" he decided to ask, Alan had a few spells he found himself unwilling to use and also a few spells he hoped he would never need to experience getting hit by ever again. One of those had been the Blasting Curse or any fiery spell truly. They seemed quite volatile. "Or one that you absolutely would love to learn?" He asked like that because he knew as a first year the Slytherin's amount of spells would still be pretty basic.

┏ ┓----- B y the look on his face, Avery was enjoying this. – Of course that was all going to change…
Avery had a way with people, that was sure. It was known that he preferred older company, by way of the duties he carried out at home; and the fact that he had to grow up pretty quickly if he were to meet the expectations of his name and birth; and the aspirations that would upset his brothers. His experience did imbue him with a kind of confidence others might lack in the duelling room, and he would wager that others would shy from a sixth year’s practice request.
For now, he was glad to have accepted. Alan seemed as dedicated as he was, and the pair seemed to share some similarities.
“A dance? - Funnily enough, that’s how my mother says she sees it. My brothers on the other hand, imagine people they want to destroy opposite, but they’re quite— out there.” Avery followed up, as blew a strand of hair from his face and patted the soot off of the front of his sweater. He was still visually struggling with his vision, blinking more than normal as he tried to wet his eyes and allow Alan had taken him by complete surprise, jumping him whilst Avery thought there was enough time to take pause, that they were between the ebbs and flows of their duel; but much like bare feet that dared to tread the renewed sand left by a receding wave, he was caught much quicker than he’d suspected.
He had expected to be thrown back, or set alight, but seemingly nothing happened. Hah! His spell was a dud!
“Hah, well I suppose whichever you just cast would be yours considering it wasn’t eff- effecti…” His eyes rolled, as one would when the itch to sneeze began to creep through his sinuses.
“Ah- ah… ACHOO.” He finally let out, the first of a long fit of sneezes. He had to rush to get out his spell, as he felt another sneeze coming.
“Incendio!” He gave, sneezing just after the bolt of flame left his wand, which was way off mark. “Well- it’s certainly now, mi- mi- mine– ACHOOO!” This was going to become annoying, fast.
“Right now? It would be Bombarda!” He spat, though a grin followed after. It was all in good fun, though the sneezing was indeed starting to get on his nerves. “In truth, I’d like to– ACHOO, know what others think. There is a spell for that– ACHOO, surely?”
Was he revealing too much here? Or perhaps was this moment of weakness inspire Alan to overlook whatever intentions were behind him asking; sinister or otherwise.

"I feel like anger and desperation makes your wand work... sluggish," he replied smoothly, "Seeing it as more of a dance that follows a tact, your opponent as someone you lead a certain way and therefore respond fluidly, well that makes moving along with things easy, as well as dodging; you should try the latter," he bantered with a well meant snicker. Now that lead to one certain follow up question, "What goes on in your mind when you find yourself facing an opponent? Is it different than you would expect it to be if things were more serious?"
Alan had to wonder if Avery had ever found himself facing trouble. It seemed like the boy had enjoyed some amount of luxury in his life, the life of a pureblood truly which Alan would never deny was also the life he had been born into. But even such a life wouldn't mean an easy upbringing.
Soon enough the other fell victim to his spell and it turned out to be quite the ire for the other boy which made Alan grin. "Well if it is your least favorite, you would do well to remember its name, the Sneezing Hex. Though surely you would have been learning it this year? If I am correct though the last years of school are somewhat of a blur," he offered with just enough wit before giving a joyful laugh at the other boy's jab. Bombarda? "Why not go for Maxima? I'd have thought you would have tried for more effectiveness! As for your actual response? I am sure there are spells such as this, but I'd doubt their... legality," he offered. If Avery wanted to learn of such things, he would best pay the library a visit, though the librarian might give him an odd reaction.
Alan had one spell on his mind and with a flick of his wand, cast his signature spell.
