Unexpected Snowfall, REALLY Unexpected
backdated 12.15.22
♡─There was no sugarcoating it; Scottish winters were brutal.
Truth be told Maeve always enjoyed the snow, at least most aspects of it. The way it made everything look fresh and new, carefully muffling the sounds of the world to create a sense of peace and quiet instead. God knows Hogwarts needed that every once in a while, practically a madhouse with all the students forced to spend an abundance of time together. It was an experience, being at some magical boarding school; that much was true.
It was ironic, then, now escaping from what she originally yearned for. After being so accustomed to solitary growing up, Hogwarts sounded like her saving grace. Hundreds of students to know and meet? When could she start? Now the only question seemed to be when could she leave. Perhaps not that dramatic, she still relatively enjoyed her studies. Charms had been treating her well, alongside Herbology which would be a shock to little. Her first year just felt out of place, the reason quite obvious but also one she'd continue to ignore. If the next seven years were going to be anything remotely close to bearable, the Slytherin would need to grow up.
Roughly did her shoes trudge through the thick layer of white on the Hogwarts grounds, her breath visible in the crisp winter air. Despite the piercing chill, Maeve had been securely bundled in a thick coat, scarf and gloves. Admittedly a little silly looking, almost like one of those Russian dolls. Her outward appearance was the least of her concerns, though, given the only task at hand was to enjoy the wintery scene before her. However loosely the word 'enjoy' was applicable here, anyway.
The only thing untamed was the golden strands of hair that appeared to blow wildly with each gust of wind. It was sharp, feeling like a dozen small cuts on her porcelain skin. A shudder passed through her body as Maeve pulled her hat farther down past her ears, ones just as red as the blush on her nose. If anything it was torture, being out here willingly. Perhaps even mad! But with each passing second the frigid conditions seemed to get warmer, a sign of growing accustomed or.. hypothermia. She prayed for the former.
Large trees seemed to watch her sadly, their bare branches empty and pitiful. One day would spring come, restoring them of the life they ever so deserved. In the meantime, their leafless bodies would provide support to Maeve as she leaned against one, raising her hands to her mouth in order to blow warm air onto her palms. Instead of her hopes to provide warmth, she was met with anything but. Who ought to tell her that leaning against snow-piled branches would end up in it all falling on her instead?
She let out a scream, considerably loud but far from blood-curdling. The icy slush pierced her skin, clumps of snow melting down her neck when met with the warmth of her body. For a moment, all she could do was sit in the cold, the absence of movement better than moving at all.

On another hand, the young Slytherin was trying her best to ignore the outside world. It was, well, cold, quite obviously, and she much rathered hide under her covers in her bed reading than think about the snow outside. Nevertheless, she was growing restless. She wasn't sure why - she was the complete opposite of an outdoorsy person, and she always loved reading, whatever the occasion. Today was just different. She couldn't concentrate. Her brain was convincing her that the snow looked tempting. Look how white it is! Look how perfect it is! It looks like a fluffy blanket. Don't you want to go jump in it? She was trying to fight back against it, because gods knew she hated being outside (especially in this hyperborean weather), but in the end she relented. She was just itching to do something - anything.
So she put on her winter coat and boots, snowpants, matching frog hat and mittens, rainbow scarf, and set out into the wild, wild Hogwarts grounds. Aside from the temperature, it was actually quite a nice day. The sun was shining, the snow was sparkling, and the trees, however dead-looking, were waving with the wind, as though saying hello. For once in Mahlioz's life, she wanted to run around. It didn't mean she wanted exercise, or to be with others, of course; she just wanted to have fun. In the snow that looked like a giant empty canvas, ready to be filled with color.
There were already a few specks of color, though. Other people seemed to have had the same idea as the first year. Warm-colored coats and faces breathing out clouds of mist contrasted against the stark white everywhere else. Mahlioz kept well away from these. Maybe her brain had gotten frozen enough to forget that she hated being outside, but her introvertedness could not change just because of some stupid temperatures. The day that happened, Mahlioz would just give up on sanity altogether. In the meantime, she decided to make a snow angel.
...Or four. Weirdly enough, she was actually having fun. Outside. On December 15th. She wasn't sure what was wrong with her. But she didn't care, at this point. She was too busy grinning. Just as she was about to make a fifth angel, though, she heard a scream. Jumping up with too much curiosity to ignore it, she looked around. The scream had come from not too far away, but there was no one nearby. Just snow, and trees, and more snow. Mahlioz frowned. She distinctly remembered that there had not been a pile of snow by that tree over there before.
By the time she realized what had happened, she was already running over. Her curiosity had gotten the better of her. Trying to move all the snow, she found the stunned pale face of a girl. Mahlioz couldn't decide whether to laugh (you had to admit, this was only something ever seen in muggle cartoons) or panic because the girl might have gotten frozen to death. "Oh my god, are you okay?" The words spilled out of her mouth before she could stop them as she kept trying to brush the snow off of the poor girl.

| ─── | It was Thursday, December 15th, 2022.
Steadily drawing closer to the time when students would leave for winter break. For the upcoming holiday. Kim sighed to himself, not really wanting to go home. But it wasn't as if he had much of a choice. The annual Sato Yule Ball was taking place and he was required to be there. Bailey had also managed to weasel her way into an invitation. Which in turn had opened up a whole new can of worms. That had made Kim find out who had already been invited to the ball, in an attempt to find someone he knew to distract his family members. From zeroing in on Bailey, his muggle 'date'. They couldn't find out Bailey was a muggle, not yet... He really didn't want to go back home and face all of this stress. As classes had let out for the afternoon, and he didn't have any club meetings today, the green haired teen decided to do his homework now. But doing it inside was not of interest, since there were a lot of people hanging around the common room. Therefore, he decided to go outside and do his work with Puffie by his side. Satchel slung over his shoulder, Kim made his way outside as cold air blasted him in the face. Despite the temperature, he felt refreshed from the coldness. The air was easier to breathe when it was cold too. A sigh escaped his lips as he moved forward, heading over to the grounds, one of his favorite places. Dressed in a warm multi-colored fur jacket, a long-sleeved green pastel dragon-designed dress shirt, a plain white shirt beneath that and a pair of dark jeans, the cold could not get to him. As he moved further forward, a scream was heard a few seconds later, drawing his attention in that direction. Puffie squeaked, startled a little. The scream hadn't been one of pain, nor of fear, so that was good at least. But what could the reason have been and who had it come from? Kim hadn't known someone else was in the near vicinity as him now. But they had to be for him to hear their scream. As he walked around a corner, he faintly saw two figures in the distance. Moving closer, he realized they were two girls, neither of which he recognized at first glimpse. They did look young though, perhaps they were first years. One was leaning over the other one, trying to do something to her and the other one seemed to be leaning up against a snow-covered tree trunk? Kim tilted his head to the side as he watched the two from a short distance away, partially hidden by a few small trees. However, if one looked over in his direction, they would be able to see him. Puffie's bug-eyes fixed upon the two girls, as if he was quite interested in them and he stretched his legs. Kim glanced up at the pink puffball and narrowed his eyes at his beloved pet. "Don't you dare do what I think you're about to do..." He warned Puffie. The green haired teen didn't want to chase after him. |

Unexpected Snowfall, REALLY Unexpected
♡─A voice; just what her humilation needed.
If not for the witness who had rushed over to her, Maeve would have considered dying there altogether. Perhaps the dramatization was a bit stretched, but a student's death on Hogwarts grounds was hardly unheard of as it were.
Now we were just being cynical.
The unfamiliar hands that appeared to help were slowly brought into view, though their identity misplaced. The only information registered was the absurd question that followed, leaving Maeve bemused at the seriousness in their voice. "Do I look okay?" Her tone was noticeably affected by the cold, quickly softened as the words escaped her lips. "Sorry. Just shaken, I guess." Maeve looked upon the girl with curiosity, partially thankful she wasn't the only one crazy enough to spend a day like this outside. If not for her predicament, maybe their chat could've even been pleasant.
Though it appeared indulging in the winter wonderland wasn't nearly as exclusive as she thought; the glimpse of another just barely off in the distance. Had they seen the whole thing too? Much help they were despite just complaining about the aid she did receive. Still, the idea of being a spectacle didn't exactly resonate with Maeve. Had it not been for the pink fur just next to the figure would she have called out to them directly, instead only cocking her head at the sudden sight of the pygmy puff. If there was something the first year was without question, it was confrontational. With whatever strength she still did maintain, Maeve waved feebly at both the creature and its owner. Cute little things.
Her focus returned back to the student before her, one she hadn't known personally but had sworn she'd seen at the Slytherin table. Either way, standing up properly was the least she could do to maintain her dignity. "Looks like I have quite the audience." There was a lightness to her voice, one almost considered playful.@Mahlioz Evethisawe · @Kim SatoReducioNo worries! You're more than welcome to join.

Actually... she took that back. The young Slytherin finally understood why the girl had snapped at her. It was an incredibly embarrassing thing to happen. Of course she didn't want people to help her - she didn't want people to be there at all, witnessing what had happened. Mahlioz now just wanted to go back in time. But it was too late now. And besides, the girl seemed to realize she was putting her humiliation and anger into her tone, and apologized. "Don't worry about it." Honestly. She definitely understood.
The girl whose name Mahlioz did not know - they still hadn't introduced themselves, but that was to be expected, since they were in such a peculiar predicament - seemed to notice something, or rather someone, behind Mahlioz, and waved. Curious, the first year turned to look for herself, but saw nothing. Or - wait... a splash of color. Pink. Was that... Is that a pygmy puff? And its owner, though partially hidden and barely noticeable, stood beside it. Mahlioz frowned, slightly confused, but deciding not to do anything about it for now, turning back to face the girl instead.
She had finally made it out of the snow, thankfully. And regained her good humor, from the looks of it. "I guess so," Mahlioz replied, not sure what else to say. "Are you not frozen to the core? How aren't you running inside to a fire?" That was what Mahlioz would have done. Cursing the cold all the way there. The girl was seemingly immune to extreme temperatures.
Well, she was too far in to back out now. It was about time they introduced themselves. Mahlioz put her frog-mittened hand out to shake. "I'm Mahlioz, she/they." She wasn't really sure whether that was weird, or not the right time, or something else, but... well, none of this encounter seemed normal to her, so she decided to go with the flow. What else was there to do, anyway?

| ─── | Puffie looked up at him and Kim looked down at him.
The two stared at eachother for a few seconds, almost having a telepathic connection between them. Finally, Kim let out a sigh and then started to trudge forward through the snow towards the girls. He'd given in to his beloved pet's desires. It was obvious Puffie wanted to greet the girls in the distance and although Kim would have preferred to not go out of his way to greet them, he didn't have a choice. He didn't want to have to go chasing Puffie through the snow. The pink puffball was quite happy with Kim's decision and bounced on top of his shoulder with excitement. A little dangerous, as such an action could cause him to fall. But of course he'd be excited, the green haired teen thought to himself, Puffie was a social creature. Unlike him. As he drew closer to the girls, he became aware of the fact that both of them had seen him back there. Well, it was good that he'd come over then. If he hadn't, they might have thought he was intentionally avoiding them for some reason. "Yo." Kim said, raising a hand into the air, giving them his trademark greeting that he tended to give everyone. Puffie squeaked out a greeting, bug-eyes gazing at the girls present. "Sorry for interrupting you two." Kim apologized and gestured up at his shoulder and Puffie. "Puffie wanted to see you up close." "I didn't feel like chasing him through the snow if he tried to go to you himself, so I came over." The green haired teen explained to them. He let his blue eyes flicker over them. |
