And get them Jake would. There was little chance a spectator could have foreseen the turn of events that were about to transpire. There was an even smaller chance that Slytherin could have. It was chaos in its rawest form. Or maybe it was just pure skill from the Badgers.

With the fog fully isolating Jake he was easy pray for the coiled snake. A muffled "flipendo" could be heard from withing the fog, while duo incantations for Ventus would ring out from the Snakes. Yet only one jet of wind would fly towards the fog. Opeila had made a grave mistake while casting, sending the spell's full force on herself. The wind ripped into the poor duelist and trapped her in its vortex. "OUCH! That misfire has to hurt! And wait - " Galton's voice would cut out as he watched Hanako's own Ventus enter the fog, and Jake's flipendo exit.

Flipendo was known for its power, but for something cast while impaired Jake's flipendo seemed to be aimed right at Hanako. Purple light would dash out towards the Viper, before anyone could blink it would crash into them. "What was that! JAKE!?" The next moment Hanako's ventus exited out the fog, Jakeless. "A miss from the other Viper! Jake goes unscathed! Who is the fog helping after all?!"

Admits all the chaos, there was Autumn. As terrifying as being paralyzed was, Autumn would prove that she was even more terrifying. Beyond the fall and a few moments of stillness, she would break her invisible bonds and stand up, joining her fogged up teammate. "Autumn's rejoins the fray! Don't discount the Badger's - proof that you never know what to expect."

Oh this is just precious. If only he had evaded the painful flipendo, he would’ve had a wonderful time laughing at whatever dilemma Winters had found herself in. He had never dueled with Jake before, but he certainly thought more..softer spells suited the boy. Hanako tried to see into a fog to see Jake’s reaction, but alas his sensitivity to his surroundings would not be able allow him to see through thick smoke. Hanako had the bit of an urge to act more wounded than he actually is to cause the Hufflepuff boy distress, if he knew how he felt about it. It only lasted for a few seconds but it was there.

“ Really Winters?” he attempted to find the humour in the situation instead. “ I mean I know I missed, but that's just more embarrassing “. He had hoped she'd able to hear him despite the winds surrounding it. Then again, he wouldn't mind saying it again, but louder.

Wasn't there a saying of some kind? Something among the lines of who soared the highest would fall the furthest? Strangely enough it was this saying that popped up in her head when she attempted her spell, immediately notincing that something was entirely wrong, only to be hit by a strong gust of wind a moment later.

"Really, you want to talk about embarrassing, Tone? Should we unpack some duelling history here? How about you try to hit something."

"Did I hit him?" Jake asked tentatively, trying to peer through the fog. He had heard Galton's shocked reaction but he hadn't seen if his spell had hit its mark. It was all a bit too hazy and he was still darting his head around to try to watch out for any spells. One of them blew right past him - a gust of wind, luckily Jake kept ducking and tried not to stand too still. THAT was something he was getting better at. No freezing, keep moving.

What he DID see was his partner getting up beside him. The petrification jinx couldn't hold Autumn down, and slowly she had managed to struggle to her feet. Jake nodded in appreciation, impressed by her tenacity. Once again he found himself feeling lucky she was on his side of the duel. He breathed a sigh of relief, both because Autumn was ok, and because now he wouldn't have to fight alone.

As Jake readied his wand, he listened with curiosity to the discussion going on at the other side of the platform. Hana and Opeila seemed to be in their own little duel of words still, but he couldn't really tell if they were just joking around like friends do or if they were really fighting. It was hard to tell the difference with some people sometimes. Either way, any time they were focused on each other and not on hitting him, Jake was happy.

Lady Luck was playing an inconsistent, confusing game, but if that meant temporary success for her team, Autumn would take it. She was slightly afraid, she had to admit, that things were only looking up to make her hope, so she could only be more hurt when facing defeat. But the place for cynicism was off the piste, so for the moment, Autumn just watched.

She watched Jake hit Hanako with a well-aimed Flipendo, and for a second her mind wandered back to the confounding question of what Morris believed to be real assault. Lightning and fire were off limits, but somehow this was better? If he weren't such a nuisance Autumn would have considered discussing where he drew the line. For now, she just appreciated his success and toned down the general seething in his direction.

Not that she was doing much seething in her current state, completely motionless and a little terrified out of her wits. But pulling together any bit of strength or willpower left in her, she felt the figurative bonds paralysing her loosen. She stumbled back to her feet and tried not to look too flustered. As she felt her muscles return to their original tightness, now due to stress rather than magic, she also felt the leftover terror fading away. She was fine. She'd have to be.

Of course, Tone's missed spell and Winters's backfire did make it easier to collect herself, and she even let out a small chuckle, and a look towards her teammate. She hated to say it, but now seemed like a good moment as any, and the boy clearly needed any encouragement he could get. "... Good job. I guess." It was a bit of a challenge, figuring out roughly where he was in the fog, and Autumn hoped he could hear her (but also maybe, if he didn't hear, that would be fine too; good for her dignity, or whatever.)

If last bout had chaos in its rawest form, then this round had chaos come alive. It was living and breathing and it was making this piste its home.

The piste would be filled with bountiful, beautiful incantations. The chorus would start with a solid Reparifors from Opeila, followed by eloquent and precise incanting of Jake's Flipendo and Autumn's Incedio Duo. It seemed that the Badgers had some favorite spells. Hanako would not be left out though - he too had a favorite spell, and he too was good at casting spells. This round he would prove in fact to have the best casting abilities, with a textbook perfect Ventus. "OH! Music to my ears - what a cast from Hanako!. Galton would shout before the spells began to fly.

Opeila's healing magic would go to work, surrounding both of the Vipers in purple light as they felt some of the hurt wash away. It was a valiant effort to heal someone who was actively insulting you - it showed maturity. The hurt would not be gone for long though. Jake's Flipendo sailed out of the fog on a confusing path, zigzagging all about. It was hard to follow as the forceful ball wound around. In a last moment turn it would and head strait into Opeila. In a much more strait forward manner, Autumn's fire would find it's mark on Hanako again, replacing the dying flames with new ones.

And then, as Ventus was known to do, the wind would whip itself into two beams, rocketing towards both of the Badgers. Jake would make easy work of evading the torrent, reflectively really, not that many (if any) would be able to tell. But Autumn would find herself the focus of a honed in gust of wind. It would rip into her with hurricane like speed, trapping her in its all too familiar vortex.

"NOW THIS IS A DUEL FOR THE RECORD BOOKS! Peak performance out of all on the piste." Galton didn't even know where to start if he was to comment on the play-by-play for those spells, so he'd settle with a comment to build the energy. If it could go any higher after that display, that is.

Winters was making sense. But did he need to acknowledge that? Psh, n o. All he had to do was live in his comfortable imagination that he hadn’t missed all his spells so far while she was stuck in a mini tornado. He merely rolled his eyes with a mocking grin at her. “ Yeah, I’ll take that seriously from the girl whose having trouble even keeping both of her feet on the ground” says the guy whose robes has been on fire since the 1st round.

But perhaps something did tick him off about her comment.A foggy stage was his stage. It would be too easy to blame it on Jake’s slippery-ness, but he definitely had some sort of blame for it, right? So it was only natural he did a perfect ventus next. The loud praise from the moderator almost made the newly flamed robes. Frankly, if not for them- he surely would’ve been in a better mood. “ Do you maybe not know any other spells, Ivy? “ he hissed, though his tone was in a playful manner, there was obvious irritation. “ If you want my attention that badly, all you had to do was ask, you know. Fire is less romantic than you think, babe” he mocked with a flirty tone she was quite familiar with.

Ah oh yes, Winters healed him. Hmmm… he’s gonna pretend he didn’t notice.

Autumn had a very special relationship with fire, and she really, truly disliked Hanako Tone. Was it such a surprise she'd set him on fire twice already?

Sure, maybe it was predictable or boring, but she was fine with that. If she had, however, had a problem with her own repetitiveness, she was certain the dancing reds and oranges and yellows of her Incendio Duo's flame would have washed her concerns away. It was in this moments she became familiar with the literal interpretation of the phrase "like a moth to the flame".

She didn't have nearly enough time to enjoy it before Tone's spell made contact. She was pretty sure she hadn't even been the intended recipient of the attack, but that didn't matter now. The wind was pushing her back, and the effort it took to not lose her footing made it ridiculously hard to move. Autumn hated Ventus.

She kind of wished he'd set her on fire instead. It was probably best that she didn't voice that thought, though. She'd hate to give either Tone or Winters ideas.

The worst part of it was, of course, the flirting. Every time the boy opened his mouth, Autumn had to try not to gag. It was inconvenient and he was awful.

Still, she and Jake looked generally better than the Slytherins, and ignoring her little trip to paralysed hell, she'd been casting well so far. As well as he was pretending it was no big deal, there were hints of annoyance in his voice, which were wonderfully amusing. All that was to say Autumn was in a good enough mood to indulge him. If only to defend the honour of fire.

"I don't believe you're giving credit where it's due. Fire can be quite romantic indeed. Not in our current context, I'm afraid, where my goal is to burn you to ashes, but... Well, Incendio has a certain charm to it, no?"

Being civil was a little painful, especially when she had to raise her voice to get through the wind. Tone was lucky physical violence was frowned upon in duels. He had a face that was begging to be acquaintaned with her fists.

Wow. That sure was a mundanely violent thought, one which reminded Autumn a little too much of who she was before Hogwarts for comfort. She was just going to take that thought and bury it deep, deep down. Fire was fine.

Jake turned his head as he heard some surprising words from his partner...

"Really?" Jake asked, taken aback. It was probably not the way you were supposed to react when somebody told you you did a good job. He shook his head to shake himself out of it. Captain...right. Even after this much time of being a captain and a prefect, it was STILL hard for him to muster any air of authority. It just wasn't what he was built for. When there were people who might put themselves in danger, or treating others badly, he would find it in him to step up - when people were trying to break the rules or hurt someone, that was when Prefect Jake would show himself - but in a situation like this one, spells flying around, all competition and winning, and having to cast at others? Well, that wasn't really where he shined, and it was hard for him to remember to carry himself like a captain. "Thanks," he said with a nod. They were getting along much better this time, and DOING much better too. Maybe that was why?

Jake blushed a little, his spell intended for Hanako veering wildly off course and hitting into Opeila. He hadn't even been aiming for her. Maybe if he didn't show it though, they'd just think he'd done it on purpose? Hanako seemed to be much better at aiming his spells - his wind jinx split in two! Jake ducked quickly out of the way as it whooshed across the platform, getting out right in time, his reflexes kicking in. He'd had a lifetime of trying to avoid things, and finally it was paying off. Autumn wasn't so lucky. Jake straightened up, holding his wand tightly, wincing at the flames that hit Hanako. He still hated that they used spells like that...but he forced himself not to say anything. He knew that he was different on that one. That others didn't have the same problems with fire that he did. But how could they NOT? No, it turns out they had a different take on fire entirely.

Huh...?

Jake squinted at Autumn and Hanako as they talked about how fire was romantic. Jake knew embarrassingly little about what was romantic and what wasn't (George was more the expert on THAT one, Jake tried to go more quiet on the subject now so people might not realize just how unappealing he found the whole thing - he was pretty sure he wasn't supposed to feel that way anymore) but he was totally one hundred percent sure that fire was NOT romantic. "Fire...? Romantic...? How?" he couldn't help but ask. It wasn't the time probably to have this conversation but he hadn't been able to help himself.

Opeila could barely suppress a chuckle at the sight of Jake's confusion at his teammate's pun. This was alright. She would not complain if they manged to distract each other all on their own.

Hanako however decidedly got on her nerves. She made two steps towards her housemate and lowered her voice. "Don't make me regret keeping your sercrets."
