By the Water, Not in the Water

She'd devised something special for this wayward first year of hers. She'd been truly disappointed when she'd found Cassie Jiang swimming quite cosily in the lake. Never mind that it was Spring, and the mornings in the Scottish Highlands could be quite frosty still, especially the water. The girl was crazy in Bea's opinion, but she wouldn't say it out loud. Bea herself, although likely a swim every now and then, would never dare go into the Great Lake on the school grounds. For one, it was freezing. Two, a giant squid was rumoured to live there. And three, the most important, it was against the school rules!
Crunching an glossy red apple, taken from the Great Hall on her way down after lunch this fine Sunday afternoon, Beatrice had with her some History of Magic homework, and would be doing it while she supervised Cassie. Two birds with one stone, so they say. She'd owled Cassie to meet her down at the boat shed this afternoon for her punishment. The caretaker had kindly offered her use of the boat shed for this afternoon and Bea was delighted. A perverse sense of justice would come down today. Stepping into the boat shed, the prefect put down her things, apple being held in her mouth with her teeth. Once her hands were free, she grabbed it and looked around. A few of the boats were set up bobbing in the dock. One had been set aside for Cassie. She'd asked for it to be. As well the boat, supplies including oil finish and a rag. Hopefully by the end of the day, the poor girls arms would be too tired to go swimming any time soon.
Sitting down on one of the steps inside the shed, Bea waited for Cassie. When the younger girl arrived, Bea smiled cheerily and waved her over. "Welcome to the Boat Shed Cassie! Usually students are not allowed in here, but I got special permission by the Caretaker. Today your task will be to oil this here boat." She gestured to the boat. It wasn't big by any means, only large enough for three to four students. But it would take the girl all afternoon. "You have some equipment here. I'll be over here doing my homework whilst you serve this detention. Come get me when you've finished." Explanation done, she left the girl to it, crunching her apple happily as she set about doing her homework.

By the Water, Not in the Water
After gathering her things and returning to her common room after she was caught by the Ravenclaw prefect, Cassie is much nervous of what will await her. She asks her dorm mates about detention, and some of the punishments is awful indeed, what will her punishment be? Cleaning the owlery? Or something else?
When she received an owl from Beatrice to ask her to meet her at the boat shed this afternoon, she is both nervous and excited. Nervous of course, this is her first detention, but few students have entered the boat shed before! This, can be such a wonderful experience! Meanwhile, she is wondering what she will do...
She gets dressed in her school robes and walks to the boat shed by the great lake. Her heart is pounding fast. When she enters the boat shed, Beatrice is already waiting for her there. She tells her that her punishment will be to polish the boats in the shed.
She is a bit excited actually, this is such a new way of punishment. Her friends have never experienced such a new way of detention. But she is a bit nervous as well, for polishing all these boats can let her work all afternoon. Luckily, she has no club activities or meetings to attend this afternoon. All she is caring about now is that she will have little time to do her homeworks.
She picks up her tools and starts polishing. She picks a boat and starts to clean it. After cleaning the dirt off the boat, she starts to polish it. By now, her arms are tired and starts to ache a bit. She tries to secretly take out her wand to finish her work, but after looking at Beatrice, who is doing her homework nearby, she puts her wand back and starts polishing.
One boat, two boat... finally, when she polishes the last bit of the last boat, she sits on the floor of the boat shed. She is exhausted, she used up every last bit of strength. 'Beatrice,' she says, 'I have finished my work. Can I leave now?' she looks outside, it's already time for dinner, she is very hungry.

Bea kept glancing over at Cassie to make sure she was doing the job properly, and to all her credit, the girl was doing it quite well. Hopefully this would teach her not to go breaking rules any time soon!
As the hours ticked by, grew restless. Struggling on this last paragraph for her essay, Bea furiously scribbled out another sentence as she sat on the floor. Her bum was starting to hurt after all this sitting on a hard surface, and Bea fervently wished Cassie would hurry up with the task. In a way it served Bea right, since she was the one to assign it to the first year.
Finally, after hours, with the light inside the Boat House waning through the windows and across the water, Cassie exclaimed she was finished. Hopping up and stretching out her limbs, Bea headed over to the wooden vessel, casting an appraising eye over it. She didn't dare touch the thing now, sure to get oil all over her hands and clothes if she did so. Nodding once she was finished, she cast a stern look at Cassie. "You've done well. I hope this serves as a reminder to not break any more school rules, accident or no. It's nearly dinner time, so get cleaned up." She pointed her wand at Cassie and cast a quick "Scourgify," with the wand movement of a S. Any oil or dirt she'd gotten on her robes instantly vanished. "You are free to go. Enjoy the rest of your day Cassie."
